Thank you very much! Simon O'Neill is, undoubtedly, a great "heldentenor" of our time.

Thank you very much for sharing this vid. I'm German and this "killer-arie" is one of my favorit. It's even much more difficult to sing for a non speaking German tenor beware of that... singing is much more then the right pronounciation... I appreciate every minute. Beside the singing, the body language and face expressions are great! Love it. A great wonderful Tenor! Greetings to New Zealand🥰

Now, that's what I call a decent heldentenor voice! Metal, and effortless power up to the highest notes, even if they're repeated so many times as in this breakneck aria. A bit of wobbling in the vibrato, a bit of tremolo. But all in all a very ringing voice that cuts through anything.

Pedrillo voice. But he made it... Heldentenor is something else!

You obviously haven’t heard him live. His Siegmund is huge.

O'Neill is great, but Barenboim has lots of trouble following the soloist (esp. at 7:40 and following).

What's your problem with his e's? I'm German as well, and I wouldn't pronounce them differently. His ch's and sch's (and also his 'r's in the middle of a work, ie Freiheit) need work though, that's true.
I think that any singer would have great problems singing the stretta NOT open. It's one of the hardest two minutes of operatic music there is.

Just a bit too "heavy" for my taste. I know the subject is dreary. But this interpretation drags unnecessarily. Doesn't sound like Ludwig van Beethoven any more. Sorry - hope you can take the criticism ;o)

Now that we are used to Jonas Kaufmann would you still see this rendition as too heavy? Imagine him singing....And,by the way, how is Beethoven supposed to sound?

@@jenspflug7473 Two wrongs don't make it right. Kaufmann is not a good fit for this role, this tenor is a better fit but still... indeed it should be lighter.
