But as it could not distinguish between a toy and a real weapon, could it also be fooled by say a workman holding a drill, or a VR weapon for example?
Similar size and shape of a pistol, uzi etc. How tuned in is it?
I would assume it alerts security before police for a human to assess the situation as a failsafe.
The sad thing is that you need to have security detection like that in the first place to be honest.
I agree, this should be everywhere. I only wonder about false alarms, or the rate at which they occur, in real life. Still, it's worth it if it stops 1 mass shooting.
Great question. As the AI needs to see both a human and a weapon in hand the likelihood of false positives are low. However it's not perfect (eg a gun phone case can be seen as a weapon). So the security team gets a notification first and a video clip before activating their procedures
In the case of SDS, there needs to be both sound from a gun and a muzzle flash. So a falling book for example won't set it off
False alarms are better than no alarm.
Treat it like the software that it is: get it out there, then update it as the feedback comes in.
Many of these events are end-of-life moments for these shooters. That's why many are found to stage their weapons in the open and brazenly walk up and into buildings in full view.

I agree. There might be ways around the system but it is better than nothing. Technology saving and improving lives is what it should be all about.
security cameras cant stop active shooters... armed security guards can. why do we send billions to trillions of dollars overseas when we should be spending a fraction of a percentage of that on our own countries security.
a camera is fine, but as the saying goes, when second counts, help is minutes away. If you do not already have the help you need on scene, then you have already failed
They won't spend the money here to prevent school shooting because that wouldn't help their agenda to disarm citizens nor can they get money back under the table like they do on overseas deals.
Armed security won't do anything except cower behind cover as the shooter does whatever they want. Look at Uvalde. The issue isn't with security, it's with the sheer proliferation and availability of guns in everyone's hands.

Ideally it is best to keep the shooter outside of the building. Once the person or persons are inside the chance of them shooting even one person goes up. If they have the weapon(s) hidden under a coat this is not going to detect it. Only when they expose the gun do these detectors help.
Some great tech out there Liron. Thank you for sharing them. I totally agree that these types of detection tech should be out there everywhere, from homes to hotels/motels, hospitals to airports, train stations to taxi ranks, schools to colleges and universities. Also government should make it hard to obtain guns. Sadly here in the UK we have knive crime increasing, and maybe the odd gun crime. But In the US its big crime. Thank you for sharing.

I wonder how robust their system is. It's been known for years that we can fool neural network-based object detection models using things like adversarial stickers and patterns.

A gun is not a gun when it is in a duffle bag. The tech is great, but can easily be defeated. Let's focus on the psychopath and mental health.
so basically, lets do nothing and reduce the odds for these active shooters because of an odd situation? That makes zero sense. And in most of the shooting incidents the attackers where already armed with vests and walked across a parking lot before entering the building. I would rather have that detection that not have any in case someone tried to sneak into the building with a bag.
And don't divert the conversation into mental health. There is a problem right now, I want a solution right now while they work out the "bigger issue".
If you get get injured, you want a bandage before you bleed out. You don't really want a lecture about hiking and you certainly don't want to wait for a machince to be invented that will patch you up in the futrure.
I am not even saying you need to use a very rare type of gun for it to work, you could just cover the gun with a towel or a bag or something and it would not get detected.

It should automatically go in lockdown when it sees a shooter approaching the building. If the shooter makes it inside, the building should have smart locks to keep the shooter locked in an enclosed area. Not too hard to do with todays technology, paying for it is another story though.
That could happen if they choose too. You could unlock doors within seconds if you see it's a not a threat.
Man, this would be great for law enforcement body cameras to better identify threats and justify deadly force encounters.
The issue I have is that it doesn't distinguish between toy guns and real guns. Would you enjoy being shot by police for having a toy gun on you and carrying it around?
@rispatha Well, I wouldn't enjoy being shot at all but that being said, if you are encountering police with a toy gun and are doing things with it like pointing it at police, I think this is an example of Darwinism at work. The law still considers it an act of "armed robbery" if you robbed a bank with a toy gun so it it stands to reason that in situations where the authenticity of the firearm is unknown, it behooves one to error on the side of caution.
To be clear, I'm not saying that just because the camera might indicate the presence of a weapon that cops should automatically open fire. There are many cases where police have interacted with people holding firearms at their side and cops take the time to descalate the situation. Where I see value in my suggestion, is where the public and politicians are ready to execute a cop for a shooting when they know nothing about law enforcement, use of force law, and rely on two frames of video footage to form an opinion. It could even help in these circumstances to identify threats the officer may not see.
You really think this will improve law enforcement outcomes? They'll still shoot you regardless, because they "feared for their life".
@@Sartre_Existentialist ... The only guns that can be looked at as not toy guns outside of real guns are BB and Pellet guns. They can and do look like the real deal. All other toy guns that have not been altered from the original factory specs can easily be seen as toy guns. Even the Airsoft guns have that nice bright orange tip on them to show they are toy guns.
While I will agree this type of technology would be very useful and a great aide the next issue is how the police are trained. Hell some of them can't even tell a phone or camera from a gun and shoot first and to hell with the questions. How many people have been murdered by police and they claimed the person had a gun and found none?
Even if police had this technology they would need to be wearing some sort of augmented reality glasses so that indication would show up in their vision. Do you now propose that every cop be outfitted with what will be charged as $10,000 per officer to outfit them with it all? They can barely operate the body cams now and you think they would deal with the augmented reality glasses any better?
@@rispatha Cops see toy guns, flashlights, cellphones, even tree branches and misidentify them as guns then start blasting. Happens way to often. This kind of tech won't stop the trigger happy cops out there.

My only concern is for false positives the first system could generate, depending on how well the algorithm is tweaked. That could cause everything from paranoia to disregard(apathy).
As to why its not in every school.. that's a multi-factor issue. Cost is probably the big one. Personally though I think there are far darker connotations than just cost alone.
There’s always a human in the loop with these types of solutions, which can be our professional monitoring centers or the customer’s security teams if they choose. The AI is always learning and keeps getting better. For Omnilert, false positives have not been a problem.

Wonderful to be able to detect weapons quickly. However, this helps only if someone is continually monitoring the screen. Humans being humans, that won't happen
not sure what you mean as there are literally security rooms on campuses who do nothing else but monitor cameras. Also if the system AI detects the weapon, it send the alert so the human can confirm and activate the processes.
Nobody needs to watch a screen for this. Alerts are sent via text, app and other means for instant review and verification, from anywhere.
@@LironSegev although the people in those rooms are doing their best, it seems impossible to watch a screen (or anything for that matter) consistently. From the many times I see people who should be paying attention while driving, in class, at their job, and instead are on their cellphone, I don't have much confidence. People do react to distractions. But if an alert is available, that may alleviate my concern

I agree. I'm thankful that in Australia we have next to no mass shootings and would like to see the technology implimented here to (hopefully) keep it that way.

I think it needs human confirmation like from security monitoring the cameras. If no confirmation is made then alert authorities (to minimize false alarms) The drill team practiced right outside the school with toy rifles.

I somewhat agree. I give you an example with that shot detector. So I have these installed in my home. A robber breaks in while we sleep. He see me in the basement and shoots me, so there your shot that will be detected. Now I will lowball the number. Let say it takes the police to get to my house is 2 minutes. This shoot still has 2 minutes to get the rest of my family. I see how the tech wants to save us all, but it can't. Someone will still get killed with these techs. Only way to take out a shooter in my house is when we are all armed.with knowledge on how to use it safely. Many may not agree with me, which is fine and I have no issue with those who want to have the shot detector in their homes. I have no say about anyone homes, only mine. I just hope these folks with shot detectors don't depend on legal gun owners to save the day if they are neighbours. I know for sure I won't be stick my neck out for my neighbours with shot detectors. Once I hear a shot I get prepped. ANd that school surveillance one i forget the name of it. It should be placed in all schools. But safety for the common folks is expensive and the governments can afford it but play the game they can't because they have wars so they can wash taxpayer money and keep it. They will never install these things in poor and working class schools. Now schools where elite kids go, they most likily had this kind of tech even before this video came out, but its all new to us poor and working class.
and I agree with you. The tech isn't for home use but for large installations where an active shooter could be anywhere on the campus. When there is an incident, the more info you can get in the shortest amount of time will results in a better outcome. So if ther is a shooter on a college campus and they let out the first shot, you have one position. Now they move and shoot again, you have another position. This tech isn't meant to prevent the shooting from taking place, but it is meant to deal with the threat as quickly as possilbe.

What we need to do is start a petition for the government to subsidize such technologies to help us safeguard our lives! I highly doubt this would stop an incident. Fire alarms don't stop fires, they merely warn tgat that a fire is occurring. On that, 98% of all alarms are false. So, will this just muddy the waters and create unnecessary panic situations and draws resources into nonthreat situations? What if tge alarm sounds and there isn't anyone armed or trained to counter that threat? We've seen it. The police arrive and dont take appropriate action. Mass shooters need to be afraid, and that's definitely not one of their attributes.

Also, imagine a firealarm had the ability to send a warning to the house owner when it detected that something is getting warmer than it should. It would send a video clip of the location of where the heat is starting to get above normal. The house owner could then take action.

After Columbine, I expected all kinds of safety devices would be installed in schools,......not that there were many available at that time. Even lock all the doors, open during school hours, even a metal detector.......You have to start somewhere! I have worked for governments, hospitals, nursing homes. We always had to have a code to enter in keypad, a card to slide in the slot; a button to push and wait for employee; or a speaker;, cameras. One place we had to call ahead and they put your name on a list and you used your card on the "incoming slot". On your device that only triggers if you have your hand on the weapon; ummm, you can stuff a lot of guns in backpacks, boots, belts, pockets, sleeves; I just don't get that one, but nothing is fool-proof. Thanks.

How long till someone works out how to change the outline of a gun so the shape won't trigger the system? A jury rigged cardboard shroud or 3D printer plans posted online for changing the profile of a AR-15, Glock and other popular firearms because.."Freedom."
The shooter detector wouldn't pick up a gun with a silence/suppressor.
Mass shooters usually plan their attacks out for days to weeks beforehand.
And once the guns are detected? (usually by the first few victims being shot - so tough luck for them).
I can destroy the argument for these systems being able to keep people safe with one word; *Uvalde.*

Actually it depends on the type of suppressor and the room that its in. Either way, not a single case as far as I know, in any of these mass shooting was with a silencer.
Mass shooters plan their attack ahead of time - I agree. I don't see how that is relevenant to a system that detects the weapon though.
Yes, the SDS system is not preventative. But wouldn't you like to have intellgence on where a shooter is? The sooner you can identify the location, the sooner you can deal with the threat. Especially on a large campus such as a college or a factory where the shooter isn't in one location. Rather than looking eveywhere, the system allows for identification of where the person is along with camera footage so can identify the threat. Wouldn't you want that?

@LironSegev Actually, having slept on it, I can see some merits to your points _if_ they were part of a wider attempt to limit gun violence in America.
Tying in _all_ security cameras to this system could be part of the way to enforce a blanket ban on all open carrying of firearms, a first step in reducing public anxiety about being shot and a occasional cover that mass shooters use on their way to commit their crimes.
With saner gun laws nationwide (federal, not state) and all firearms databases linked, it could make it more difficult for crazies to get guns, especially if every private sale has to be reported.
But until there's a major cultural shift and the majority who want stricter gun laws actually get them, America has just got to accept that they'll have regular massacres, and stop being in denial as to why.
@@casbot71 think you nailed it there. Security needs a layered response, whether its cyber security or physical security. Having AI provide early alerts on CCTV cameras that are otherwise unwatched could provide a huge advantage, if the response (verifying the threat, calling emergency services, etc) is then well coordinated as well. One piece of the puzzle.

Maybe. Its a double-edged sword because maybe it works well and we roll it out to malls, airports, and streets. Maybe we ca detect shoplifting, jaywalking, and spitting. Soon, we'll detect the people's commenta about those in power and maybe we can bring them in to have chat. I like AI but am scared of what corporations will rebadge this as.
I disagree, with an ineffective police force (over 90% of school shooting end when the gunman commits' suicide) these are just another useless expense for schools etc. Police literally wait outside until nothing happens. This is soooo common, making this system of alert redundant. Your countries problems are way more invasive than what this solution is supposed to be for. Having said that I can't knock people for trying.

I disagree...and it's hard not to get into politics here. Think about what has helped to drive up school shootings in the first place. Two major items--the huge amount of weapons that are easy to obtain, and the near instant reporting and covering of these shootings which helps to inspire future acts.
The solutions in the video are purely reactive. Image classification--great if it always finds a gun drawn, but missed positives and false positives could be a huge problem given the stakes. Sound and IR detection--again, false positives would be really bad, and I also think even if it works: the barn door is already open, the amount of information coming in as the shooter moves will likely overwhelm. It might be useful for responding police, but only if they have easy access to it.
Arming school personnel--holy crap, just don't. Adding more weapons to the mix is definitely the wrong move. Think about the following: access to a gun drastically raises suicide risks, plus having guns in that environment that could end up in a troubled studently hands is not a recipe for success.
I'm much more interested in making guns harder to acquire, but the political will of the country is not there. So here we are, making schools into warzones. What a time to be alive.
So essentially you are saying that we should ignore a solution that is available today in the hope that one day in the future someone would figure out a better solution?
I don't care about any politics. Right now there is a problem. Right now there is a tech solution for early detection. Can literally install it tomorrow. But we don't because the conversation always gets diverted into something "bigger" so we do nothing today in the hope that "they" figure it out some day in the future.
In other words, let's not put a bandage on a wound and let the patient bleed out because in the future we would have a machine that will instantly patch the wound.

Add tech that flags a firearm today.
Identify threat before it gets into your building today.

Here in the US we are not working on any of those issues, instead relying on solutions like these, hoping like mad a tech solution will solve this dilemma. The more time we spend on this, the less focus goes to the larger issues. We've been doing this ridiculous dance for decades now.
At the end of the day, we're not going to end up on the same page on this issue, and that's ok. But I encourage you to at least take a skeptical eye towards this kind of tech, much like I've seen you do in most of your other videos. It's one of the things I've really enjoyed about your channel, and why I plan to stick around.

@@LironSegev it's easy to explain, even if they didn't. People not afraid of getting shot or imprisoned - like revenge driven school shooters - don't Care about this tech. There's no prevention with it. You know what works? Banning guns and a society that cares about the social and psychological problems. Our Last school shooting in Germany was years ago (2008 I believe) in my city and we don't have any of this tech. Politics isn't BS, it helps solving problems, but you have to be willing to do so.
When I was a teenager, say about 50 years ago, a policeman used to drive up through the town at 5 mph. We boys only had to be walking, talking, minding our own business and he would stop us and say : What's your name, Where you going, What you got in your pockets? In this way he knew all the local lads and could easily see which ones might be troublemakers. The school teachers knew them all too. I remember the day about (1967-68) when the headmaster announced he was going out to pay a visit to the parents of one of the pupils. I was once in his office when another boy was getting the cane. Not the old "six of the best" WHACK! - Just a gentle tap tap tap on the hand. Until the boy, in tears, decided to tell the truth of the matter. We lived in a town virtually free of crime. (When did they decide to take the cane away from headmasters? Was it about the same time teachers had to become entertainers to keep children's attention - because of television!)
Or just move to a country that doesn't have a gun fetish so strong that it's more important than your kids' safety.
