I have come to the conclusion after taking many Anti Gun libs to the range. Once they shoot a few rounds of an AR or 9mm pistol they suddenly want to buy a gun. They all think its just like in the movies. But once they realize that going to the range is a very refine process thats very safe and methodical. They want to own one.

As an instructor I have done this many times. Nearly always the end is smiles and an appreciation of what we do and why. Many are at first over awed by the power in their hands, and so they should be. To hold instant death is not a small thing, and nearly everyone I have trained ends up more thoughtful, sober of mien and self possessed for the experience. Handling weapons, and especially firearms, is a sobering experience; it changes people, and for the better, whether or not they continue into shooting sports, hunting or whatever.

Coming from a gun enthusiast, if someone has never fired a gun, don't bombard them with "watch your stance", "slow steady squeeze", "your posture is all wrong", etc. It makes firing a gun so much more intimidating than it already is. Obviously, give them pointers etc., but they're firing a darn glock here. It isn't going to blow them back to the wall behind them. Teaching my family members to handle a pistol was a very personal thing for me. The instruction of "safety first at all times" and stressing that point is the most important factor and after that sinks in it's all down hill. Fundamentals are a little different with each type of pistol/revolver but the safety rules remain constant. I felt that the children were the easiest to teach since they were used to listening to what I was telling them as a teacher and was able to perform step by step as shown. Adults seemed to want to jump forward through some steps that I immediately made sure they followed a more procedure type approach for safety.

It would be good to show the targets afterwards because it's dangerous for people to have no training with a gun and put all their cards on figuring it out in the spur of the moment they find themselves in the position to need to use it thinking it'll be a perfect bullseye. But I’ve only ever shot two mags worth of a 9mm glock something (I dunno it was with my dad’s friend) and the only shot I missed was the first shot. So as a first timer, if I were to show everyone “how great my aim was” it might send the opposite message ya know. In this situation, it’s a controlled environment with an instructor, taking his time, they probably hit their shots too good, and didn’t want to show that so it wouldn’t seem like anyone can just pick up a gun and hit every shot (maybe I dunno, just some shared experience).

As a retired Firearms Instructor, I can say with all confidence that almost all people who were anti-gun, were simply afraid of guns. When they went to the range and actually got some familiarization and were able to shoot for a while, they enjoyed it and had fun. It totally changed their opinion. Many of them purchased guns and got further training for self defense and home protection. The few that did not seek to buy a gun, at least understood why other people owned guns. I find Anti-Gun People are generally ignorant of guns and safety.

I like this instructor. He was on top of range safety big time. He jumped in immediately and constantly with trigger safety and muzzle awareness, reinforcing them verbally at every opportunity. I also like that he started them off each with one round only. I'll have to steal that idea. It makes a lot of sense. The only thing I'd recommend is starting newbies off with a .22 caliber (but that doesn't make for an impressive video).
