The problem with the 996 IMS bearing is it's unpredictability. Some have failed at very low milage, based solely on a lack of improper maintenance. Believe it or not, there actually are people out there that - for whatever reason - feel changing your oil is optional, even on expensive cars. IF I buy a used 996, I don't care how many miles it has on it, if the IMS bearing has never been changed I'll deduct that from the purchase price of the car. Otherwise, let someone else can deal with it!

Hello you should mention the year of the car, you only said it was a 996

You might feel good about $6k, but the labor he's charging is no bargain. FW& Clutch kit (Luk & Sachs) plus oil separator (gen Porsche) is $1200 at Rock Auto, the LN (definately not my first choice) bearing is $800, so thats $2k, add another $500 markup & misc for shop towels to be generous and it's $2500 for parts. So, $3500 for 10 hours labor, or 15 hours for a slow mechanic is pretty hefty.
It took me 20 hours to do this exact job myself, but I'm just an old guy taking my time in my garage with a quickjack trying to re-live my youth.😀

I debated doing it myself - but we did a lot of other stuff as well, so in the end I was fine with it - we did the mounts, oil separator (?) some ac lines, as well as the shaft bearing, rear mainseal, and some other things that needed done. I do work on some stuff (see my vids) and there are other things on the horizon that I will do, but this one just seemed like a lot. Charlie is a friend and works on all of my P cars, and I trust his work. Sometimes you need to support a small business, and trust the experts.

I'm going through same upgrades, but including the water pump while in there. My IMS was replaced, but not IMS, and I believe it was with an OEM bearing that Porsche dealership put in for a premium. It's worth the $6k to have piece of mind, and help on sell for my upgrade! Having a trusted indy shop is key!

Porsche could have gained a lot of goodwill by offering these bearing upgrades to buyers....but I suppose it doesn't matter, people are still loyal to the brand.
