when i played this game as a kid on snes it was shortly after i had been playing at the arcade and taking computer programming classes. What i thought at the time was that code and sprites were removed from the game. It was depressing. 'Cause i could "see" the code that was missing.

Lemme give you guys the scoop on what happened with this game. See, Takara at the time was basically the Japanese equivalent to like a LJN here in the US. They were a toy company that jumped into gaming to use their name to promote their likeness and toys by publishing video games and as far as I know didn't code or produce anything. They would contract other smaller game companies to make games for them often without giving them any credit. This was actually done by Nova who were like coding mercenaries and took on work from others like Namco, Taito, NEC Avenue, Tomy, Banpresto, Takara etc. I won't completely throw them under the bus or disparage them because some of their other ports like Burning Force on Megadrive or Thunder Blade for PC Engine were respectable ports. I just think in the case of this game that at the time they didn't have experience with fighting games and it shows by how the game feels and how much went into it. If anyone else knows more by all means jump in because I love video game history.

SNK was trying to stand out by doing some things differently from Capcom, so it seems they were aiming for a much more engaging arcade mode than SF, a style that burrowed a vibe from the standard (single player) arcade experiences of that period.
Like the story direction, as even the smaller scale of the plot (as opposed to traveling over the whole world) helps to make the story easier to grasp and feel more palpable. That progression over the map of a single city feels closer to the transition between areas of beat em ups like Final Fight.

a painful memory is seeing this on the genesis at a mom's and pop store for $20 and deciding not to get it, then got regret after a couple days, went back and it was gone....i kept saying to myself when i first saw it that it was only a butchered port of the arcade and not worth my time and money, but man, did i regret not getting it.

Makes sense since the Genesis was closer to arcade architecture, so early ports from the arcade were better there before they figured out how to get more from the SNES.

By the time Art of Fighting for SNES came around Takara had a much better grasp of the hardware. I remember how impressive the saling was. I thought the controls were fine too.
I also really dug the soundtrack. In particular Stage 4 (the restaurant) fighting King. That track is still impressive to this day. It really felt like the arcade came home for a young me.

I have no idea of the story of that Takara company, but it just seems like the devs were inexperienced either with the Snes, or with the Neogeo, or both. At least they got better with time... though it just was a rockier evolution than other companies making ports on the Snes.

My brother and I were grade school kids when this came out, and we LOVED Fatal Fury in the arcades, but were SO disappointed with the SNES port. TBH, we were pretty disappointed with most of the Takara home ports, except for the GB games which were shockingly well done. (Samurai Shodown GB is still one of my favorite games on the Super Game Boy, along with Mega Man V and Donkey Kong '94)

I used to credit Takara with making great ports of fighting games for other, less powerful systems too, eventually I came to learn that they just dished out money to companies like Be Bop, Gaibrain and AI.
That doesn't diminish Takara's involvement though, there's some influence they have with management that causes these disparate companies to really nail the ports even on the least likely of hardware. There must be some unifying thread there.

I think it's a good detail that they kept the different animations of the characters when moving forward and backward...
In most games that was the first thing they did not include, I imagine that in this game it was possible because there were only 3 selectable characters,The conversion of this game for Sharp X68000 is incredible, it even preserves the 2 player Vs CPU.

There's also region background differences between the Japanese and US version version like Duck King stage with the poster of the beer bottle on the right hand of his stage is replaced with 3 singing ladies.

I really dug snk's fighters in the early days in the arcade, art of fightings gfx were just so amazing and world heroes character variation was so imaginative! But the multi lane gimmick of fatal fury never appealed to me.
And when the reviews came in for the snes ports almost universally they were seen as very pale imitation of the neo geo versions so definitely mostly skipped them, save a very occasional rental which did not convice me to buy.
in the end i ended up with (all on snes) sf2 which i played to death, mk2 which i did play a bit but the cpu drove me crazy, and killer instict were again the cpu was annoying to me and i also was not a fan of the crazy combo system, also picked up super sf2 with a 50% or so discount but very late in my snes ownership, i almost bought my saturn or maybe even already had it. And on the saturn i got kof95 and yes that game i loved even though that ai was also quite tough! And a zillion capcom fighers.....obviously :D

Once I got a Neo Geo and a copy of FF, the experience was so positive I don't think I ever associated it with the previously poor experience I had on the SNES. Yeah those two games in their first versions were made with a strong correlation to SF1, in many aspects. And AOF, because of parallels like the Ryo x Robert duo, who are rivals using the same fighting style, could be called an "alternative timeline sequel to SF1", in the sense of feeling like a direct progression of the gameplay ideas of SF1. I remember starting with FF2 and then played FF1 later and found it rough to play.

I always like Samurai Spirits/Samurai Shodown for the SNES. To me, it’s a pretty impressive port.
I remember when I rented Fatal Fury for the SNES back in the 90s. I was so put off by it, that I wrote off the entire Fatal Fury series until I imported a Fatal Fury collection for my Sega Saturn in 1999. It took me that long to give the series another try. I’ve come to enjoy it quite a bit, since realizing the SNES Fatal Fury was just an awful port.
Still, it definitely has its place in gaming history.

Fatal Fury 1 and Art of Fighting 1 were made after SF2 but they had perhaps a stronger reference on SF1. The two games were made by the maker of SF1, who left Capcom and went to SNK. There are also strong SF1 references in the way the arcade mode works, like not open to the whole roster but focused on the "heroes". And the minigame style of both games reminds more of the SF1 style than the SF2 style. And sure, the button layout is just another example.

Grew up with the Mega Drive / Genesis Fatal Fury 1 love and enjoyed the MD/GEN version even tho it’s missing stuff and with the SNES Fatal Fury 1 i only got yo try it year 2000 not good but enjoyed it for what it is now that I’m older both had stuff cut for back then the Devs had to work with the limited cartridge size rom so they did what they could.
Man have any of you guys seen Real Bout Fatal Fury for Genesis / Mega Drive some talented people from Brazil made there own port which looks amazing great man I wished theses guys if there were allowed to get the rights to release it on original cartridge as I definitely would love to buy for my console and collection and also I would love for the same with the guys who are working on Final Fight Mega which awesome

Fayetteville highway was such a sweet game I used to have that game on the super NES and I used to play the crap out of it. And by Fayetteville highway I meant to say fatal fury. Sorry guys I love you know I'm actually a brain in a jar of the communicate with the world through thought process and sometimes our process get wrong they confuse my thought with another word that I'm thinking of but I'm not thinking of it but they just confuse it for some reason I guess I speak too fast in my thoughts for the program to recognize the words. I found that pretending to speak with an accent sometimes helps for some reason the program probably was programmed by someone who spoke with an accent.

This was my first snk game i played. I didn't know the difference until i played the arcade version on the ps2 collection. I was like holy cow 😮 by the way...i knew no one who played the 2 player mode in the snes one. Because it was so broken 😂 we just put the game on the highest differently and take turns when we lost.

Goddamn I wish I kept my games and systems. Really wish I didn’t sell my 3DO or give away my Sega CD. EDIT; I definitely would have had the Art of Fighting snes game I just can’t remember it much.

Oh you started with the SEGA Mega Drive version, aka the superior home console port, too? I like wha it brought to the table with not only the versus mode but also being able to play as Geese Howard by holding left on the player who wants to play as him (goes for both players fyi) but also to play as mirror versions of the characters you fight against which not only had different colourations (Blue haired Terry Bogard rules and "Coca Cola" coloured Andy Bogard still looks funny next to Gold Dandy Richard Meyer, Red garned Tung Fu Rue or Shadow the Hedgehog looking Duck King, kinda ironic in hindsight) for their clothes but also DIFFERENT COLOURED SPECIAL MOVES like for example a BLUE POWER WAVE for Terry or a red projectile attack for Tung Fu Rue instead of his regular green one!
Oh and it took me until 2022 to find out what the weird final voice take was in the sound test of the mega drive version... that was leftover data that wasn't saying like "hello Vincent" but the japanese version's title screen Garou Densetsu announcer saying that which was removed in the international/non japanese versions.

I Always Remember this game. It was my First Arcade game not to mention My Frist Neo▪Geo Game well the SNES version. So I couldn't be Mad, it felt kool😎 But in all honesty it was such a let down, it Felt un-Finish, The 2 player Battle Suck, Hard Punch and Hard Kick didn't react the way you wanted too, Stages seem different, certain Fighters Missing, Everything was Wrong with game. But I Still Played the Hell out of It👊 ps: Fatal Fury Special was the Way to go in My Opinon #Mia❤

Aside from great music, I thought the SNES port was terrible. No jumping in and out of backgrounds, bad controls (like the arcade), and the two player game could've been better are what ruined it. I was still naive and excited about it as a kid, though.
    EDIT: Gameboy's KOF'96 was 100× better than '95!

I prefer Fatal Fury 2/Special on the SNES over the Arcade versions because it ditched the whole plane switching but that first game is a dud. I hate how the characters sound like clowns when they're KO'd.

It's so strange to me that the guy who made Fatal Fury also made SF1, but they don't feel anything alike. Street Fighter 1 felt more original, and when moves connected, they felt more brutal, I didn't feel the impact of the hits in Fatal Fury like in SF1.

Fatal Fury 2 on the Genesis is also much better than the SNES counterpart.

One thing you didnt mention dude. The god damn load time on a cartridge! Back then. Never forgot WAITING...
"Street fighter Alpha 2 was the first SNES cartridge with load time. " Hard no.

Regarding Alpha 2 on the snes, it was discovered those long pauses between rounds were solely due to the music loads itself. There's now a patch for the game that fixes this & the matches now start almost immediately.

That was one example of real issues with those early ports. The first time consoles started getting ports of more consistent nice quality was on the Saturn... and there were those few cases of miraculous well done ports (like Snes KI). Of course, in most cases it felt better than nothing. It was the game making conditions and the console technology conditions of that time.

Takara's SNES port of Fatal Fury Special is REALLY good. Controls are tight, has all characters + stages from Neo-Geo, and has pretty cool music. I always preferred it over the SNES Super Street Fighter 2 port, which was out around the same time. There's even a code to unlock Ryo, right outta the gate 😎👍

  • @lookitskazzy

There's probably two reasons for this.
One, the SNES has a slower CPU. The cartridge is probably also using LoROM.
Two, the Genesis and the Neo Geo share a 68K CPU. More than likely, Takara had access to the source and was able to reference it during development. In the case of Genesis, this results in something that feels closer to the arcade, while for SNES, it's just used as a reference and needs to be completely rewritten for the 6502 based CPU in the SNES. This also happened with SF2 where the Genesis version felt closer to the Arcade, even retaining the CPS1 chain combos from the arcade.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 4 місяці тому +1

There's also the factor of the developer's ability. Like, the company actually made better ports after this one. Every single project means experience that goes to possibly improve the next project. This just reminds me of the difference between early Snes projects and late Snes projects... like in the early 90s, if we used the references of those early ports, we would have trouble imagining the Snes handling things like SFA2 and Megaman & Bass (that is a brand new game but uses a lot of assets from MM8). The devs keep pushing and learning better how to use the hardware.

There was a donut shop right across the street from my high school that had Fatal Fury, World Heroes, and Art of Fighting in late 1992. That's when I fell in love with SNK. Long story short my Mom bought me the SNES version of Fatal Fury 1 at the end of the semester in 1993 right before summer started, and I cannot put into words how heart broken, dissatisfied/disappointed, ripped off I felt with that crap after playing the original the year before. That port really pissed me off back then. The next year I just convinced her to buy me the Neo-Geo AES, and just stopped messing with ports all together. My Mom loved to make me happy when I was a kid, and I'm very grateful for her even to this day.
