    I feel like CO was supposed to be sort of an "endless mode", to let people continue playing if they feel like it. But the Spelunky community is so masochistic that it decided to make it into a goal. Not just a goal, but something to be discontent with, if you fail get it. I got all the achievements in Spelunky 2, but I never even considered going for 7-99. This is madness and I refuse to take part in it.

      After I got all the achievements I felt emptiness in my heart, like I knew that I didn't finish the game yet
      Well, I got my 7-99 completion yesterday and I couldn't happier

      ​@@lumzyhere i sit in the middle, I could care less about 100% I got it in HD and that was fun, and I did a couple hel runs successfully but usually when I played I just played to beat olmec unless I had too good a run not to try hel, until I discovered whip jumps on the shopkeep, then id usually go chaotic final runs. I'm taking the same approach with 2 as I did HD, beat the game the easy route a few times while training and learning, then go for the ultimate challenges next, beating final boss, and after my final boss clear, l at least want to attempt to reach the CO and make it past one jelly, if I do that much I'll be extremely happy, clearing 99 is daunting and I'm not keeping it out of the question, but I'm not going to obsess over it like I did hel and 100% of HD, as i already am aware that this game is a way bigger task than the first. I kept up with the discovery of the quest line and the data mining at the time, and have since researched it all again, and that's why I'll be happy if I manage to clear the final boss let alone reach CO. I don't want to go crazy trying, and as far as ik NL didn't clear, which is what gave me hope to clear the final boss in the HD game was seeing someone that doesn't consider themselves great at it doing it.

    the cosmic ocean should've 100% been endless, its entire design philosophy leads it to working much better as the reward for your adventure rather than just another part of it, a fun waterslide where you get to see the most ridiculous entertaining deaths the engine can possibly allow and see how far you can get in the process, but the existence of an ending made it a goal for most of the people who got there
    and yes, it should not be accessible in the dailies, would add so much variety, accessibility and longevity to the dailies

      I understand why so many people have issues with the cosmic ocean, as my first and only win as of yet, which I got recently, I spent 3 hours and 12 minutes on. Spelunky hd: if you have a couple minutes to try for a PB the regular ending, you could go for it; if you had all night, you could grind the hardest challenges such as eggplant% or basic hell or chain low hell… the basics. With spelunky 2, like you said, having an ending makes the players desire to reach that goal. While the feeling of getting there is incredible, the process is mentally destructive. Spelunky hd and spelunky 2 are my favorite games, but sometimes I don’t have enough time for a true cosmic ocean run because it takes so long. I have started speedrunning it and I’ve gotten to 7-39 at 1:02:-, which died due to an off screen spikeball trap. My least favorite thing about the CO is that you can die by no fault of your own. I want to make a mod as well that makes the CO never ending. I feel it would pose a crazy challenge to the best players, to see how far they could get.

      my idea is that it works like how blargh speculated in the video in standard runs, and there's a separate endless version once you beat it that allows you to go for as long as you want with saves between levels
      and maybe add a rare chance to use a biome from hd for the funnies

    I would love that CO was a special daily challenge mode, starting at 7-5, ranked primarily by distance but taking faster time into consideration for people in the same level. Then, with that done, just make the base levels into the old spelunky hd ranking system.
    There you go, two different daily challenges for everyone to go suck at the game *twice* a day.

    The optimal Spelunky 2 experience isn't the Tiamat win, Hundun win, or the Cosmic Ocean 7-99 win. It's the Randomizer.

    glad to see someone else who holds this opinion. when i first heard of a mystical place called the cosmic ocean i expected something new and utterly terrifying, but was instead disappointed by the same recycled levels with only a cosmic jelly and loop mechanics added.
    I've also always thought that the daily challenged should have stayed score-based, because as you put it there's no reason to ever go into a vault.

    As a person that actually finished CO runs so many times, many of them playing daily, I always loved this being the "master challenge". Even in my "better days", I could die for some bullshit in 1-2 and this is exactly what made this game fun for me. Like, it doesn't matter how many times I beat the "special ending" because this game is so freaking difficult that I can still die early with a simple finger slippery. It's not like City of Brass that you dominate the game and you'll beat it every run.
    So I used to think this was really awesome... until I become a full-time worker.
    Every time I start to play Spelunky 2 now, especially daily, that you can't even go to sleep mode or your run would not register, I do some calculations to see if I actually have some time to spare to a full daily. I'm so rusted right now that my chances to actually do a 99 are really slim, but I don't even want to start if I'm not going to have time to finish it. After trying to manage my time and basically sleeping less because I was always miscalculating, I kinda decided to "stop tryharding". I still do some fast adventure mode runs, but that's about it. Daily? I was doing in my off days, but now even that seems a struggle. I keep thinking that I could use my time better doing something else, like playing another game that doesn't require my full attention for 2 to 3 hours.
    So yeah, I still love Spelunky 2, it's a great game and it was pretty fun struggling for months until finally getting my first constellation, but I kinda agree with you, Israel. The special ending is just not that special anymore and the reason is not because many people got there already. It's just not compatible with an adult life.

    Honestly, I resonate with the bulk of this video. Spelunky 2 changed a lot of things; like how certain items function, introducing new items for better QoL, and the physics took me a long while to adapt to but I did have fun with it.
    But when it comes down to the idea of finishing the game or performing the daily challenge, it has become more like a chore you have to actually make time for. I shouldn't have to look at my schedule and think "Hmmm.... do I have time to try a successful Spelunky 2 challenge today?" when I could do several runs in Dead Cells in the same time frame and still have the feeling of adrenaline when I shut off the title and go do something else.
    There is a difference between "Difficulty" and "Unnecessary Grind" and Spelunky 2 definitely dances on that boarder. I still come here to watch your videos because I enjoy you and your humor; but I cannot bring myself to actually play Spelunky 2 anymore even as a streamer.
    Because it's just not fun.
    If I were to put a Spelunky on the lineup again, it'd be Spelunky HD. Because there's something so much more fulfilling to getting that high score of cash and trying to improve your personal best; rather than aiming for a score based on level progression after a long chain. And at the end of all that, sometimes it's not your lack of skill that kills you.
    Sometimes it's a cursed cat and a croc man waiting for you right at the start of 7-22.
    If a Spelunky 3 ever comes into the works, I hope there's a lot more focus on skill and clever thinking your way to a high score in order to feel like your time spent was worth it, rather than it being another endurance run that can die because of a combination of fatigue and RNG.

      I suspect you'd get more enjoyment out of a turn-based roguelike.
      Also, really not sure how you can deem the insanely grindy Dead Cells to be less grindy than Spelunky 2, which has almost no progression-gated content whatsoever. It's literally all about your skill and cleverness as a player... the grind is self-improvement, not punching an imaginary clock for some meager digital progression driblets over, and over, and over again as you watch your friends and family grow old and die around you.

      @@Luckster Life is finite, is all I'm saying. Why let some random game designer decide for you how to use your limited time? It's not an abstract question in an industry where you might spend thousands of hours on one game.
      Spelunky doesn't decide for you how much content you need to churn through before you have the opportunity to win. There's literally no incentive to play if you're bored with the game, except maybe leaderboards.

    I think cosmic ocean could be fixed if they let tunnel mama make a shortcut for it. Becaus then it feels more like an endless mode, but since getting there takes like 25 minutes, there’s so much pressure to not fail and aim for 99

      Actually can’t be tunnel mama because it would make that one achievement stupidly hard, maybe just something like when you go into cosmic ocean with more than one million dollars (or maybe since millionaire without the final treasure is rly hard, it could just add money to a total that compounds until it reaches $1m), it says something like “the cosmos have delighted in your wealth, but they hunger for flesh” then you have to get to cosmic ocean with a hired hand in tow, which gives u another message, then you get there while cursed for the final challenge and that would unlock a portal to CO from the camp (I’m thinking up where the telescope is)

    I mean I like it a lot. It makes the game even more replay able and they didn't actually make beating it required for achievements (there's an achievement for getting there but not one for beating it). I think it's there more for just messing around in some sort of postgame area than something that was actually meant to be beaten. The ending cutscene of it is more of an easteregg than anything. If you just like trying to survive for as long as possible but started to not have trouble with Hundun, this is perfect. Even then, I still wish damsels and structures (like shops and alters) could spawn there.

    I'd keep in mind that we were never really *meant* to be beating CO consistently, just entering it already lights up the third orb at the entrance even if you die at 7-1, it's was likely meant as a sort of a secret endless gamemode if you didn't find the base game to be enough considering the devs "no DLC" philosophy, and how the reward for beating it is a very subtle easter egg

    i've actually thought about this before. that's why i wanted all my cosmic runs to be unique from eachother. solo, online co-op, taking specific items, missing specific items, online with randoms, scepter, different things like that.

    I agree with everything you said. The great thing about Spelunky HD is that it was such a chill time. Even when you get "a run" going, with early jetpack and tons of bombs, it becomes a pretty laid back, relaxing affair to ghost a good run. Compare that to Spelunky 2, where quest chains are just a little bit too much of a pain in the ass, the ghost is impossible, and the run is more intense because the length comes not from calmly ghosting things, but from going through Cosmic Ocean for 99 levels, and you get a much LESS relaxing and chill time.
    I used to go back to HD a lot because it was a great way to unwind for an hour or two here and there. But S2 is NOT a great way to unwind! It makes me rarely go back to the game, tbh. Spelunky 2 was a very cool experience going through the first time, but I've found it to have a lot less replay value for me, despite the added length and variety.

    I think the solution in regards to the daily challenge is to split the leaderboard by ending, if you stop at Tiamat you only get put up against people who also stop at Tiamat (or died before then), and so on with Hundun and CO. As far as the CO slog goes, fortunately it's not a problem I have yet to face because I suck too much to make it very far, but I can definitely see it as an issue if I keep playing for long enough. It's not just a time problem either, the CO can get stale. Dunkey's video about Elden Ring has made me realize how limiting hard games can be, I want to try using the teleporter/telepack, or bring the plasma cannon to space, but it feels like throwing the run away, because I know I need to use the same items I always use to give myself a fighting chance. It's the same situation with the alternate paths, if I were just going to Tiamat or Hundun I'd be fine going to Duat for the fun of it, but not if I'm going to the CO. The fact that by the time you reach the CO, you already have all the gear you're likely to have for the rest of the run doesn't help things, it just makes all those levels feel the same. I certainly wouldn't object to the CO being shortened, although 8 levels might be a bit much. Maybe 16?

    My biggest problem with the cosmic ocean is having to bring the stupid bow and arrow to hundun, it stops from experementing with held items like the ancient scepter or plasma cannon unless you are a god who can bring hired hands all the way to hundun and have them survive the climb at the top

    I can't reliably reach Olmec, much less play the CO, but that's me.
    However, I agree that it's boring seeing the daily challenge leaderboards, because the top spot is always the same score: 7-99. In HD you could check the leaderboards and the winner had a different score every time. Sometimes several million, other times just a few hundred thousand. It actually changed from day to day what was achievable.
    In Spelunky 2 picking up money in the daily challenge just depletes your resources and gives the game more opportunities to kill you. I think your idea of disabling the CO in the daily challenge is a good one.

    I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it’s not the difficulty that’s the problem it’s the monotony. In my opinion a lot of boring challenges were added. Boring star and moon challenges, boring getting the bow, boring Olmec fight, boring Kingu fight, boring dice games, boring CO. And to be clear I love Spelunky 1 and 2. I just think there’s too many mini games and mini bosses. I would’ve wanted more biomes and less mini games.

    My stance has always been to disable to CO in dailies as well. It's a slog to do every time, and most players that make it to end have a "I beat the game, good enough" mentality which does not lend itself to competition like the old system based on score.

    as i see it, i think that the cosmic ocean should be a separate mode with an endless and 7-99 variant, so you can run the gauntlet if you want but if you just want to go as long as you can (with some alterations, of course) then you can do that too

    Couldn't the Daily Challenge just have different categories for different playstyles. Like for example, entering cosmic ocean would remove you from the non-cosmic ocean leaderboard. And there are score and time leaderboards for both categories (with distance contributing to both so a 7-4 win would still always beat any run that does not win there and cosmic ocean is mostly distance based until 7-99). Maybe having a third category for 6-4 wins too. Maybe cosmic ocean could also somehow have a leaderboard based on constellations.

    If they fixed stunlocks and gave things like Kali altars or needs based crates in the cosmic ocean, it would be more fun to play.
    The way poison and curse work and how easy it is to be poisoned or cursed makes the game unfun. Especially in the cosmic ocean.

    I think it definitely is the most grueling challenge in roguelikes, if not the most challenging. And this is coming from a man who plays the hardest NetHack variant for fun. Key word: fun. Cosmic ocean gets SO SO SO boring and it makes the rest of the run feel insignificant.

    To be honest one of the main reason i never bought the game was because whereas in Spelunky 1 i felt that if i got good enough i could beat hell, even though i never did (i only got to it twice and then i burnt out on the game) with Spelunky 2, knowing i will never get to the real ending of the game makes me not want to buy it at all.

    In all seriousness though, Spelunky's CO is... fun for me. I find ways to make the run more challenging every now and then, by robbing every shopkeeper or ocasionally ghosting some levels, all while trying to stay alive and not lose my bow or keeping Qilin alive etc etc. I think it's vital for the game, but I see what you mean about the daily challenges. Imo there could be 2 categories for the daily, one for highest score and another for longest run.

    Echoing 6:30: the complaints are valid, definitely, and it's an engaging rant. I don't think it bears real scrutiny, though.
    1. False endings are a staple of the roguelike genre. They let you have that moment of exultation when you first win, repeatedly, while continuing to dangle more difficult ojectives to keep you playing. More important, though: CO (usually) eliminates the feeling of deflation when you reach the end and lose the sick build you just finished creating before you could even put it to a proper test. In most games, having 99 of every resource is synonymous with cheating, but in Spelunky 2 it's a good start. Removing that from the daily would just make the daily irrelevant. If anything, the daily should have *more* content than regular play, because it's the workhorse without which the Spelunky community would surely wither up and die.
    2. Speaking of the daily: CO is ideal because it provides an objective leaderboard measure that can't be cheesed by running 50 laps around every level. You breezed past the objection that ghosting is tedious without really addressing it _(CO != ghosting, holy shit is ghosting boring)_, and you continue to point to score as a better measure, but... it's not. There's a reason most modern games don't present score as a primary objective: it's arbitrary and therefore boring. An objective like "collect the shiny things" appeals to people who like shiny things, but "don't die" can appeal to pretty much anyone.
    I'm glad Spelunky 2 took the focus off ghosting and put it on actually playing the game. This rant comes off more like "give me back my nostalgia!" than "here's a suggestion to improve the game"... for most players who care about the daily, this would not be an improvement. Hundun is just not a satisfying ending once you've tasted 7-5.

    As someone who's only made it to the Sunken City 3 times, to Hun Dun twice, and beaten Hun Dun once, the Cosmic Ocean is daunting. Making it to the Sunken City is fun, but the whole idea of the bow quest just isn't. There's no cheesing your way out of the moon and sun challenges either. I would be much more interested in the CO if any old crossbow would work with the golden arrow (and yes, I know that would only require throwing the arrow at Tun after the sun challenge to get her crossbow).
    Plus, there are so many dumb things that can kill you instantly in the CO, beyond the instakill risks of the game leading up to it. All you need is a skeleton falling through the void or an arrow trap on the edge of the map to send you plummeting to the ground at terminal velocity. There are many other examples you could create too.

    Blargho, I don't really think the CO is supposed to be fun, I really think it's just a test on endurance and patience and just """"skill""""" even though half my runs in CO I die to a UFO coming out of no where. Nearly 700 hours and I haven't made it past 7-52. I agree with you, thinking about doing the CO and it doesn't make me want to do it honestly. I sorta feel obligated to beat the CO because I have yet to beat it and it burns me out really quick

    I've been around since the Spelunky 1 days but I never ran daily challenge because I never cared about score. For me, I still play the daily challenge in 2 because I'm chasing the elusive constellation. I enjoy continuing to get better at the game this way. One try every day, and that's it. Then I put my switch away. I've been doing it this way for a couple weeks now and while I'm not getting to the CO on every run, I've consistently cut my time down from 2020 where it took my 1+ hour to get to the CO, to now ive gotten to it in under 40 minutes more than a handful of times. I suppose I only feel this way because the journey to 7-99 is so exciting, and keeps me coming back again and again.

    they could make three seperate leaderboards for the same challenge or three different challenges for speed, high score and endurance
    speed: defeat hundun (or tiamat) as fast as you can
    High score: get as much money as you can until hundun
    Endurance: get as far as you can in the cosmic ocean

    Well, this is a very interesting discussion, but in my opinion, cosmic ocean was a very nice addition for players that can easily complete the game. And a nice addition to players who completed the game and want to go further

    CO should not run to 99: Spawn +1 cat every 5 levels.
    CO should run to 99 but not take so long: Spawn 6 bubbles per level. Pop 3 to exit, pop 6 to skip a level.
    CO should run to 99 but only for speedrunners: Permaghost daily challenges at 90 minutes.
    CO should run beyond 99: Fine!, but you have to do all the extra levels naked.

    Wait, the dailies in Spelunky 2 aren't ranked by score? That sucks... Then why did Derek change Ghost's behavior if there's no reason, other than proving yourself to yourself, to get high HS and thus do ghosting? Making all of that seems like a waste of development time now...

    To me honestly the problem in general is Spelunky 2 itself, the game just doesn't incentivize doing really anything but getting to the exit and not in the way that Spelunky hd does it, it's just run kill enemies find or make path and press spacebar / rb/ r2. No point in going for idols since money is never an issue, no point in exploring since pivoting away from the exit just increases the likelihood of a "gotcha" death along unexplored areas usually having 0 items in them only money, and every "boss" seems like a forced rouge like boss that doesn't work in spelunky since the point of going into the mines/dwelling is for cash not fighting monsters

    Just pointing out that if you do want to be that much of a tryhard, you need to complete the Cosmic Ocean multiple times... And that's just to see all the different constellation names.
    And with multiple factors too. Your remaining health, what you did along the way (like killing enough stuff, rescuing enough damsels, getting true crown, etc), what character you used, it all affects the constellation you get.
    Just imagine trying to do EVERYTHING possible then ending Cosmic Ocean with 99 health. Devs tossed so much replay value into just doing all the stuff in the base game, let alone the Cosmic Ocean to where it kinda feels like they don't plan on a Spelunky 3.

    While I agree with your points (maybe not with 5, at least not entirely), in the end I think it's pretty much the same. I think both ghosting for 2 hours in Spelunky HD and going through the entire cosmic ocean for 2 hours in Spelunky 2 are equally boring tasks. xD

    I can understand why you have frustrations about the Spelunky 2 daily challenges, Blargho. I agree that the Spelunky 2 daily challenge should not include the cosmic ocean and just be score based, even though I don’t have any issue with how the Daily Challenge is. I personally enjoy the 7-99 journey as it provides the longer runs I like and supplies with a ton of replayability. I have gotten 3 7-99s, 1 being in the Daily Challenge. I can say that because of how the daily challenge ranking system works, the only way you can compete with others is getting a high score (2 million for example) and then reaching 7-99. Again, while I’m fine with this personally, it is still rather silly and should be changed to what you have suggested, or just have a daily challenge that includes the Cosmic Ocean, and a daily challenge that does not. Of course, still being ranked on score for both.

    Honestly, beat the CO once, but ain't no normal human gonna do it all the time for consistent daily challenges. It is part of the reason I stopped playing Spelunky 2, I'd rather watch uncle blargho suffer rather than sniffing pure tedium.

    i think cosmic ocean wouldve been great as another gamemode once you beat the true ending, id love to try it but i reached it once and died and i dont want to do the normal run again just to try cosmic ocean again, why cant i start there?

    Tbh the only challenge I can think is harder in a roguelike is a mod, in particular the final final FINAL secret boss of FTL Multiverse. Arguably the boss before it is harder, but the sheer difficulty of getting a run to snowball that hard makes it a comparable challenge. The runs even take a similar time (although ftl lets you save and quit bc runs take forever)

    I haven't yet beaten 7-99 (PB 7-68) and the reason is almost certainly fatigue. At some point, I just can't keep my concentration on the game. That said, I like CO and I like that the leaderboards are set up exactly the way they are. Ghosting every last gem and going for super long score runs seems so incredibly mind-numbingly dull this is far preferable.

    Spelunky 2 is screaming for DLC. Getting the news there will be none was a huge disappointment. I think one solution to the Cosmic Ocean would just be to add a shortcut to it, like the other levels.

    I am all with you on this. Would love to see your suggested change to the daily challenge becoming reality! I haven't even bothered trying to get to the CO, just seems way too time consuming and honestly a bit dull. Also my butt has never felt smoother!!

    Agreed. Dailies got really boring really fast. I did a handful of Daily CO wins and it's not worth it. Also thanks for mentioning me! Can I buy your book?

    Blargho, what would you say if there was a specific daily challenge based on score. Should it still involve access to the cosmic ocean? Or maybe level 7 jewels are worth too much for a whole 100 levels worth.
    Maybe there could be multiple daily challenges. Hundun score based. And then the cosmic ocean based one, like it is now. I really don't see why they can't just add that.

    Aside from that, I also miss the score challenge from Spelunky HD. Bring it back Derek Yu. The cosmic ocean is not the answer to the daily challenge.

    i like the idea but i seen crazy scoreruns and they are quite boring since u always have to have the chaos crown by 1/3 and from there all levels are kinda the same, u bomb them u ghost the floor

    I have gotten to the cosmic ocean 5 times. Longest was 10 levels in. Prefer to just get the win tbh as I don’t have hours to spend trying to do it. Not when my first hour is spent dying all the time

    Cosmic Ocean is for those people who want to suffer. I don't want that but the game makes me feel like I have to do it or I feel like a bitch. ALSO, ghosting was very fun in spelunky and I want to bring it back. Getting a lot of gems and turning them into diamonds and picking everything up... oh man oh man, that felt so fucking good. I WANT GHOSTING TO BE A THING AGAIN. Who cares about the stupid random ass cosmic kiddy pool. LET ME SHOW PEOPPE HOW FILTHY RITCH I CAN BECOME!!

    I think you could use the daily challenge to limit yourself to just do one try a day when you haven’t gotten your 7-99 yet. It could have been fun If you couldn’t get there any other way. Regular game should end when you kill lizard/chicken.

    i have never cared for the daily challenge. thus, the cosnic ocean has never bothered me. im in no rush to beat 7-99, so it dont mind its inclusion all that much. that being said i do agree with your thoughts on the daily challenge to an extent. it should be based on score but i think the comic ocean should still be there. not all 94 levels, but just an extra 4 levels as if its another world

    I would think it is a "once it's done, it's done" challenge. Do it and know that you have succeeded in beating the hardest, most challenging aspect of the game. Therefore, never to be done again. That type of game is a slap to the face of all gamers who want to enjoy playing a satisfying game. Run through the basic, run of the mill, let's do this x times again and enjoy the challenge game experience. A game, for me at least, is a game I can play time after time, no matter the difficulty that provides me with a challenge I can endure and ultimately conquer. But 99 levels? 3+ hours??? Naw...... Uncle Blargho is competent, able, and quite skilled in Spelunky, and if he struggles to accept this garbage gameplay, well you can pretty much judge the book by its cover.

    I really agree with him, I kinda quit playing spelunky 2 because I found myself just getting angry playing it because I die to some bs that was the size of a pixel and was moving at mach 10, exploding me and my jetpack , and then sending me into the void, or getting infinitely stunlocked.
