Yea, but you win game jams by being as little creative as possible. Copy existing game ideas, change the character a little, and there you go. I think you deserved the win, and you deserve way more subscribers. I've just discovered your channel but to say that I'm proud and utterly inspired by you would be an understatement. It's crazy, at 7:00 you're explaining that you needed to trust the process and that it still wasn't really together yet, and then at 7:30 it's a crazy cool game killing enemies, dashing over platforms, etc. Really brought together the entire game, exactly as the narrative wanted.
i seriously dont understand how you make your games look so great so easily, id spend weeks trying to make something look half decent and still fail. You're one of my biggest inspirations for improving my game art, you, hyper light drifter, hollow knight, and another niche artist of whom i always forget their name. Also i get enjoyment out of seeing you suffer through game jams :D
@@mz_eth you're already there, the reason Hyper Light Drifter and Hollow Knight look so good and get praised so much is because of how everything comes together and looks like it's meant to be together. It's less about the individual pixels and more about the whole canvas, it's everything, the final product, it's nice to look at and above all, it's a world to be immersed in, isn't that what video games are about?
I burst out laughing when you said you won the game jam. You said that so casually after all those negative points The art and lighting are so polished, you may have been unhappy with other parts but this looks like it could be turned into a full game
This was very interesting to watch somone else's perspective on the game jam and their work flow. I was the programming side of the runner up game Beacon, really enjoyed playing through your game and the other submissions.
Lived the video. I've been waiting for it since last stream and it was absolutely great. I don't know how you do it but the videos are always so fluid and entertaining
I love your video, just goes to show how much folks care about graphics, especially devs where most of the time it's potato "borrowed" assets. To the point where even if the game is half-empty it's still feels decent and nice to play around with. Please make more of these devlogs. Also maybe experiment with separating gameplay and art to better focus on polishing these, i.e. use placeholder assets and bounding boxes and all for gameplay and levels, make up a board for story, aesthetic and visual design etc. Again everything you shown in this video is great just a bit all over the place, I'd love to see you grow as a creator :). Cheers
Congratulations on getting 1rst place! I love your artwork and the gameplay looks really cool in this game as well! I watch your videos every time they come out, they're really good and are the type of inspiration I need to think really hard about finally making a game and then not do it because I'm lazy. lights on keeps dog from freezing (rather than enemies). lights on timer to turn off, not only proximity, but quantity makes room warm. killing enemies unlocks door (rather than light combination). every room is cold except rest stops. story could be finding lost owner or dead dog parents from Dark Souls. combat could be more complex to make juggling lights and fighting difficult, and dodging into lights accidentally more likely.
Love your this style of video and espcially love what you put together. You won by all metrics fair and square and how you will do so again in the near future. Sidenote: Cut the nice person running this channel some slack. They don't have to know everything. Part of learning is (and I know this sounds dumb) improving. Look back at his project in one year and see how much you improved, but don't forget where you were one year ago. You already make good stuff. Now just keep at it and improve little by little

Your enemies don't have to move, the presence of snow is challenging enough. It's like they're all having map wide attack. But, even the first couple minute in this video, I know the game is brilliant. The feel should fit puzzle game too.
I wonder how it would feel if instead of clicking to turn torches on, all the torches are already lit and you have to click them to absorb the light from them. Then you could design the majority of each map as dark and the player can click to light up the curser. This light source would be limited depending on how much of the lights you have absorbed -- like a fuel.
The tricky part there I would worry about is the player running out of fuel. I’m not sure how you’re imagining it, but sometimes in experience like that the player can recognize that they’ve messed up or the game is over before they actually lose. But it all depends on what you need this limit fuel for and how the loop plays out.
@@mz_eth the fuel source could be unlimited by either having the torches slowly refuel themselves, or in a more wacky approach you could have an NPC whose job it is to start the level traveling from beginning to end lighting the torches. As a backup, you might have several NPCs throughout the level who the player could hire or ask to light torches. This could even be trees with flaming crows and when the player dashes into the tree, it scatters the crows who then light the nearby torches. As for the second issue, let me think...

Sif is not even close to the first appearance of a dog holding a sword in its mouth. That's like an ancient mythological creature design, not a Dark Souls thing.
I love your wheel of game design ideas. You know what I use to decide which game I was gonna make next. I asked my wife who has zero interests in games. Random questions. I asked her to tell me the first thing that pops in her head. Like, what type of character, Male / woman /animal or creature and discribe it. What Ability or weapon. What Setting or place. Then I just try to make something out of that. I find it to be a nice challenge.
I think making two novel mechanics and figuring out how they work together is a smart way to force creativity. I don’t think it was helped by zero planning, but I do think if you intentionally did it this way it would’ve worked fine as long as you knew thats what you were doing.

Idk why, (and this idea will probably get lost in the sea of comments) but my first idea for illuminate was a literal shot in the dark. As in it's dark and the old source of light you have is a gun. The flash from firing the gun briefly illuminates the area in front of you and costs a bullet. The issue is that your ammo is limited, and you're not alone.
