I want to emphasize Just how impressive law is. This character has an arc far better than many main protagonists. That’s incredible for a side character.
Edit: I really thought Zoro was going to get Aces DEVIL FRUIT. I’m sad he didn’t :/

Hey Daniel, have you read Don Quixote? Because you know Don Quixote and Rocinante. Corazon being the name bearer of DonQuixote Roshinante. Coincidence? I think not!
P.S. Law is definitely my top 5 characters of all time.

Daniel Greene Yeah. He’s the highlight of the arc and I’m not that big of a fan of his. But I get why people loved him after the flashback. Still I argue the arc had too many moving parts and would have been better split. It seems like Oda solved this issue with the current arc which I won’t spoil Daniel but makes Dressrosa seem like a warmup in terms of peak fiction.

Oda is rightfully praised for his world building and characters, but I feel like his handling of themes is very often overlooked. It most often pops up when talking about Fishman Island as the themes of discrimination and prejudice are so clear. However his handling of ideas like justice, freedom, and anarchy are honestly far more subtle and far more interesting.

About the Sabo thing. 1) Luffy and Ace are not really types of characters who read newspapers - it's a gag/ absurdist thing, that stayed consistent. 2) World Government only really knows about Revolutionaries (except for Dragon, of course). It's not a public knowledge of who is in command where, like you have with bounty posters of pirates. 3) Sabo is young and we don't know when exactly he rose in the ranks.

    • @titan2k928
      @titan2k928 2 роки тому +106

Exactly, Luffy didn’t even know about the revolutionary army until Garp told him after Eneis Lobby and they never said when Sabo became second. Due to page restrictions, composition difficulties etc., there’s a lot of stories that Oda finishes up in his head but isn’t able to put out in the manga according to his editor. He said that if he were to put everything he wants in the story, it’ll never end. Señor Pink’s short 6 page backstory (which I loved) was also one such instance but Oda ended up putting it in the story.
A certain fan once asked Oda during an SBS as to why Viola and Doflamingo called each other "Violet” and "Doffy". Oda replied that it was a deep secret, which couldn't be told because it belonged to a really adult part of the story. It’s clear what Oda was trying to imply here but I wonder how different the story would be if Oda could put everything in it that he wanted to.

    This arc's themes are incredible.
You have Doffy, who is a heartless monster, "Heavenly demon", who literally misses "hearts" leader in his desk. Not only that, he actually killed his brother, Korazon ("heart" on spanish, very clever, Oda), who previously was in that place (others as Pika, Trebol and Diamante). And we have Law - the younger version of Doffy, who didn't become a monster because of love that Korazon ("heart") gave to him. But being a human means to have a heart, so who then does he want to be? He wants to be king - simply born superior to all others. Doffy is full of hatred, but he is also a manipulator, he knows how to control himself and other people through this feeling. He rules his country through power and violence. On the contrast, Riku rules for the sake of his people and tries to make DR peaceful country. For him being human means more than being king. And Doffy is the opposite- in his mind he is born superior, not human but God, never bowing to anything. Ironically, this is the world of One piece in miniature - celestial dragons (which he is one of, very clever, Oda) on top, with humans below and slaves even below that. When everything seems charming and nice on the surface, but only hides the true cruel nature of this world, when people who know too much get silenced and erased from history.
And speaking of slaves, we also have all the toy stuff - they couldn't feel pain, couldn't feel touch of a person, and yet - Kyros still had his heart, his love to his daughter, so in a way he was more human than Doffy ever was.
And on top of that we have the strawhats, who fell directly into Doffy's plan, but the only reason they didn't lose was Viola's betrayal. She looked into Sanji's heart (VERY clever, Oda) and saw how good person he was, and wanted to help him - this is the single biggest reason Doffy's plan went to shit - he didn't understand why would someone help others just because of their nature as good person. Basically, he doesn't understand love. This is the reason he asked why Law kept Korazon's logo on his back. This is also a lesson that Law had to learn - Korazon didn't save him for this grand scheme to destroy Doflamingo, but simply out of love. This is also a reason, why Law couldn't defeat Doffy - because he hated Doflamingo, and it made him predictable, made him one of those hateful people who Doffy learned to control, himself first and foremost.
There are million other things to notice in this arc, but I just wanted to mention this specific flaw of ideas - how smoothly one theme leads to another and then comes full circle.

Having Trebol and the rest of the family around him from this young age forward didn't help either as Trebol used Doffy to amplify his worst even more to gain power.

As Iogic hakari said, that can be SOMEWHAT excused
One thing might justify it when we talk about random people: we often assume that every information readily available is well understood and should be known by every person in the OP world.
We have always given as granted, for example (in Wano), that everyone should have known about the 4 emperor's bounties, meanwhile we see highly ranked Marines react to them when they were told us
That's why I think that most people just dont care about the bounties, especially when they are not really involved in any way, which excludes most of the population, especially those in a sea as peaceful as East Blue, meaning that they could very well just ignore even the idea of Sabo's survival.
We also have to consider the consistency in which the bounties are displayed in the newspapers. When talking about a specific person, we don't really have to assume that said bounty would be kept there when said character is not prominent at that specific moment: that would make no journalistic sense especially with someone like Morgan who takes care of it
Thus remain in my opinion 4 characters that need to be in world justfied (be they decent or not, this is how it could make sense, not how it would be satisfying)
      - LUffy not knowing is obvious, for he is oblivious
      - Robin can be seen as keeping that info away from Luffy because of Sabo's request
      - Garp can be excused by simply not caring and not remembering Sabo (with that being the reason as to why he didn't tell Luffy), as he might simply have seen him for a pretty short amount of time and that's about it
      - Ace not knowing. This is more tricky, as we don't know his habbits, however we can assume that he might have been like Luffy + there is the first notion: he could very well just not have known

It’s details like that which make it enriching to not rush through a story or read weekly just because reading in bulk makes it understandably easy to overlook these things.
On a slightly bigger scale, it’s interesting to see what people think are relevant or not once everything is read through in it’s entirety. I noticed the Kingdom’s struggle itself wasn’t brought up in the review, more just the gladiator aspect of the story. Bellamy and his plot wasn’t brought up either. In an arc where despite half the crew leaving early in the arc, the story in stuffed full of characters and storylines, it’s cool to see what people think is worthwhile or not.

@@padrenuestre it's definitely a competition. The word "favourite" made it explicitly a competition. But here's my logic why screen time matters. I'm confident that if you asked 1000 people who their favourite One Piece characters were, there would be an extremely high correlation between screen times and favourites. I'm confident that most of the straw hats will be taking the top 10 spots, with Luffy right on top. Another thing is recency bias. Your favourite mightve been Dr. Hiriluk, but the drum island arc happened like ages ago whereas the straw hats are always present in the storyline. It's basically the same reason why you have to distinguish between Luffy, the main character and the rest of the straw hats.

Agreed, Zoro is obviously one of Oda’s favs. Other Straw Hats are definitely getting “done dirty” though (Brook and Usopp). Usopp especially has me worried for the future. Oda has dropped/skipped over A LOT of planned content for him, like how he left out the Daddy Masterson part in the manga to make chapter 100 about getting to the grand line, Usopp’s talk with Garp getting cut for page limits/time. Now it’s starting to look like Elbaf is gonna get cut too (especially since it’s foreshadowed that a Straw Hat might die in Wano and with the recent parallels with Enies Lobby... it’s not looking good for Usopp :(

Since Oda has soooo many ideas for his story and can't get all of them to the pages, in recent years he started giving bites to the animation team so they can flesh things out in the anime he didn't have time to do. The anime arc for Dressrosa was painfully stretched out, adapting less than a chapter an episode, but they did a special episode for Sabo outlining what he was up to and why he wasn't in the story till now. It's on Crunchyroll and very much worth watching to fill in a few missing pieces there.

You’re kinda right about it being “2 arcs”. Green bit was actually supposed be it’s own arc, but Oda needed to combine both due to some restrictions. This is one arc where Oda wanted to do so much and he accomplished most of it! Almost every villain had a backstory and the themes are incredibly strong. Luffy and Law are forever goated 🔥

Villain that can combine his subordinates together, a winter setting, and a doctor that experiments with devil fruits (Drum Island).

10:55 There is a One piece novel call "One Piece Novel Heroines" talk about 5 characters during timeskip Nami, Robin, Vivi, Perona & Hancock. It explain why Robin doesn't tell Luffy about Sabo. Sabo is the one who brought Robin to Sabaody, but decided not to meet luffy and ask robin to hide the matter. Here the summary of Robin Novel :
Robin has a meal with the Revolutionary Army before her arrival at the Sabaody Archipelago. The meal is a recipe from the Yukali Kingdom. The kingdom had existed during the World Government's establishment and was under its rule, but after being destroyed by another great country, the only surviving record of it was the recipe. It takes the group 2 weeks to sail from Baltigo to the Sabaody Archipelago. After arriving to Sabaody, Robin thinks that Sabo will ask her about Luffy. However, he decides to leave and not to meet his brother yet, asking her to take care of Luffy for him.

Zoro and Sanji are like the go-to hammer snatchers on the crew and I wouldn't be surprised if zoro turned down a fruit because he sees this as a duty of his. That plus the fact that he has vowed to become the "greatest swordsman in the world", not "strongest person" but "greatest swordsman". Getting a mystical power to give him an advantage is antithetical to his goal in life.

The best thing about corazon's inclusion in the story is that he went through all the same bullshit as doffy, but didn't end up evil like his brother. Part of this might be that Doffy has always been crazy, but I like to think it has more to do with who they were surrounded by after the fact. In their vulnerable states, broken down by the world, corazon was built up again by sengoku (not a perfect man, but a good one) and Doffy was built up by Trebol (🤢). Ultimately, someone showing him love and being a guidepost in his time of despair is what helped corazon heal after his tradjety, and is exactly what he knew law needed during his time of despair.
