Oda has been hospitalized over his pace when it comes to One Piece. And supposedly he's said he's willing to die for One Piece. The man is every bit the machine you say he is.
And then you think about how Aida took the break to make it so that the chapter came came out exactly 2 years after the chapter where the Straw Hats seperated
Oda went to his boss and asked for a two week break and that too he thought might be rejected. His boss said take a month off and relax a bit. Good boss

2 years was chosen for a very specific reason by Oda, in real-world time it had been about 2 years of week-to-week chapters since the crew had been separated. Incredible that as a writer he chose to have Luffy as the only main character we knew really well for a whole 2 years!

I see a lot of people talking about foreshadowing. Here's a fun fact that Daniel probably doesn't know. The current arc of the manga was foreshadowed way back in 2004 around 17 years back.

Fun fact, Sabo was already foreshadowed in the first flashback scenes where Ace and Luffy were shown as kids. In one panel, there was a third cup already peeking out ever so slightly when they were pouring the sake. Plus, Ace's tattoo with S crossed out and has been there since he was introduced, is supposed to represent Sabo being dead. Now, IDK if Oda REALLY planned Sabo that far back, but there you go.
As for perfect positioning, at least in the case of the timeskip, in this case Kuma did deliberately send them to places he thought they'd like. "Where would you want to go?"

I believe the craftmanship is not the plot convenience, but using it to execute it logically as well as tieing up to build up roads for OTHER plot convenience
So I happen to be rewatching the anime and am at the moment Kuma showed up at Thriller Bark. I hadn't noted it before, but Perona talks about wanting to vacation in a dark grimy castle, and Kuma actually opens his bible and flips through it. I had always thought it was an actual Religious Book, but I think its almost more an almanac or something of known islands and locations so kuma knows how to YEET people(or himself) properly to places around the world. One could surmise that when he watched the straw hats fight Moria and fought them himself on Thriller Bark, he got some idea of who each person is and their skills. And when the crisis on the Archipelago happened, he already had figured out where he wanted to YEET them all, and simply executed that plan. Kuma is one of the most fascinating characters to me in the series, cause so far as I know, not much has been explained as far as how he got into the position he's in as a cyborg.
@@Fissiccisst1 Kuma's ties to the revolutionary government also would allow him access to a ton of intel on the Straw Hats since Dragon would take interest in his son and his crew.
One scene I love is garp letting dadan beat him up. Knowing his status, he could've stopped her at any time or even used haki to just protect his face. But instead he let's her go all out because of his guilt over letting ace die. Top tier character writing without using dialog.
Only to add about Sabo's "suddenly" presence in the story. A lot of people agree that he should have been teased more, but Sabo's existence was indeed teased since Ace's introduction: - Alabasta: Ace's tattoo has an unneeded S crossed out in his arm's tattoo. Even though he is called Ace, the tattoo says Asce. - From the very start in the manga, the first time that the "Vow of brotherhood" was shown as a tease of a flashback, there was the shadow of a third cup. The theory of a third brother/sister existed since that moment. - Enies Lobby: When Robin and Spandam try to explain in the rooftop scene what the World Government flag means, Luffy, the same guy that doesn't understand simple structures like Baroque Works, says "I know very well what Robin's enemy is". They already took a brother from him.
Those things don't really tease him though. Nobody would see Ace's tattoo and be like "oh there must be another brother". Those things are just cool little things you can notice on a reread. They don't foreshadow the character at all for first time readers.
@@GoldenMechaTiger with the tattoo thing sure but with the shadow of a third cup that would at least bring up questions to people that are super observant, the luffy thing imo makes sense as well considering we know about robin's past via flashback but luffy himself wouldn't know anything especially not the way he is so it brought into question why he seemed more observant than he usually is.
@@Gyrados9988 The third cup is so tiny though almost nobody notices that on their first read so it doesn't really foreshadow anything. And the luffy thing makes sense but it also doesn't hint at a brother until you already know about him.
I think a lot of people agreed that the third point is a bit of a stretch. The first two actually makes sense though. But the third one, Luffy just understands who's robin enemy is because of her trauma about the buster call.

I feel like Oda did it like this, because having this flashback before his death would maybe telegraph Aces death more, right? I mean, you have an important character, who shall be executed in this arc - bam flashback how important he is for our main character. And now people start thinking about, that Ace could actually die. That's how I feel. How it is now hurts more in retrospect and it also hurts more upon reread, but it's more surprising and shocking right now
I think Oda made the right choice. The pacing of Marineford is fast and perfect the way it is. Such a lengthy flashback would have totally ruined the flow and would have taken the reader out of the heat way too much.
Oda straight up said "I'm gonna make you feel sad about ace's death AGAIN, but now for a different reason. Good luck reliving the trauma". Too cruel man.
It's so satisfying to see someone understand what an utter GENIUS Eiichiro Oda is and why One Piece truly is an Epic in Literature. Tolkien would be proud.

In the ASL flashback we see Sabo's signature is a crossed out S, the same on one the tattoo. It might be a retcon, who knows, but the S in ASCE standing for Sabo is canon.

ASL is quite possibly my favourite flashback. That scene with Luffy and Ace on the cliff contemplating life after Sabo’s death literally solidified their dreams 🥺
the thing I like more about that moment is probably Luffy's dialogue. How it clearly states what he thinks. And he has always thought throughout the series. Actually, if you look back at chapter 387 (the one in which Luffy uses Gear 2nd for the first time), you see that Luffy is actually quoting himself from THAT moment 10 years prior

Can't help but mention Ace's tatoo at this point since you mentioned luffy's "tattoo" with the message. Ace his ASCE(crossed S) is a rememberance towards Sabo whose jolly roger(flag) was a crossed S.
Also cause Sabo is dead. There’s a cover page showing grown up Ace, Sabo, and Luffy, and in that alternate universe Ace’s tattoo doesn’t have the crossed out S.
@@SchrollShepard it's just his name with the Sabo reference As Adam previously commented, the cover of chapter 596 shows Ace, Luffy and Sabo toghether as if Sabo had never died. Ace still has his name tattoed but without the crossed "S"
Thank you for saying that Oda is there with the greats. I get a lot of skepticism when I say One Piece is one of the greatest fantasy fic Epic of our time. Up there or even better than WoT, SA and Dresden Files. But on top of being a great storyteller, Oda is also a top notch artist. His art panels have been getting subtly better, more beautiful and more fluid as the series progresses
I am actually someone who loves the fact that the ace sabo luffy flashback was after the marineford arc. Certain things would've been too obvious imo if the flashback happened before the war. Things hit much harder because the flashback came after and not before but hey, maybe that's just me. I personally wouldn't change the timeline of events.
I cried three times during one piece, and in this arc it's the only time I cried without Luffy being the reason. Dadan beating Garp made me cry so hard.
Love how you perfectly described what makes One Piece so great and why Oda is an exceptional autor. There are still too many people who try their hardest to downplay the series and Odas talent for whatever stupid reason. In the future I will link everyone who starts talking crap to this part of this video!
While I never downplayed the series, I generally stayed away from it due to the art style. Same reason I stayed away from Jojo's until Part 4 was airing. Though his and Merphy's reviews convinced me to read it when I get free time (whenever that'll be -_-)
What do you expect? The anime community is the dumbest community I've ever seen. And besides it's because it's very popular that's why people downplay it. When a series gets famous, it will get tons of haters

I like how you mention Oda's structuring at the end and I think structurally what he did with Luffy and Ace's backstory is so much better than if we had it beforehand. Like you said in your previous video you didn't have an attachment to Ace. You felt for Luffy's loss which was intended. Now, after knowing Luffy for so long having a more thorough fleshing out of his childhood and getting to know Ace on a more intimate level you get to mourn his death a second time and in a different way. It's something I don't think most authors would do, but personally it hits better the way Oda did it.
10:05 onwards really spoke to me. I know so many people that would love One Piece and probably have it as one of their all time favorites if they would just keep reading. You come to appreciate the more “simpler” moments in the beginning when you get deeper into the story.
I'm so glad you hit on how amazing Oda is at world-building and planning. People who don't read One Piece always scoff when I call it a literary epic. It's very validating to have that claim confirmed by someone well-read in the genre. Oh, speaking of Oda planning things you mentioned how convenient it was for the crew to all land in places that would help them grow. It was definitely convenient, but its also widely believed to be intentional. In so much as Kuma sent the crew to the islands best suited for them.
Right? I always thought that was just accepted canon, considering that Kuma sent Perona exactly where she said she wanted to go, so we know he has the necessary control to do that and considering he's a well-travelled sorta fella, no reason he wouldn't know the best places for each crew member.

I know other aspects of Kuma are revealed when they come back but I dont recall them talking about his choice to send them to their islands? One Piece is the second most sold comic world wide, beating out Batman earlier this year. Only Superman has more copies sold and it's been sold since... the 30s, if I remember right?
Also Zoro's humbling of himself draws more interest into Luffy for Mihawk, because he is so surprised at how special Luffy is...specially finding out that Shanks gave his arm up for Luffy also!
I felt like sabo part was added to explain luffy's obsession with freedom, to the point that he would fight other's fight if it's about freedom, as sabo did everything he did to have freedom.
Oda actually did a one month break after the timeskip. Since then Oda fit in more regular breaks, every month he pauses for a week. Otherwise he is the hardest working man like ever. He gets up at 5 am and does One Piece until 2 am with shorts break for family, food and other bodily needs and this is every day since 1997. He is absolutely insane and deserves every break, he takes
Also Hiro Mashima, and one point he was writing and drawing 3 weekly manga (Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest, Eden’s Zero and the crossover between them and Rave Master) People need to learn to respect mangaka and the effort they put in

I like to thank you for doing this. It's feels so validating for us fans when books readers such as yourself and Merphy truly acknowledge the series. Most people brush off One Piece or manga in general because they don't count it in the same level as written novels. "Manga is more casual, it's never gonna be as good as a good book". Hearing your thoughts at the end of the video just fills me with joy.
Luffy counting his fingers while remembering his crew was just precious. Also (i watched the anime on this part) zoro knowing that it wasnt luffy's idea to go back and ring the bell but not being able to see the message straight away was funny
Honestly Oda should be placed among the all time greats in terms of fantasy writing just for the world he has made because it feels like a real breathing world not one just created for the sake of the protagonists. With that said this is afiller arc and there is nothing wrong with that from time to time.
Little connection that shows how Luffy has always been consistent with himself, even from this young age. This moment in this flashback defined why he was so protective of everyone When you see Luffy in chapter 387 (Gear 2nd first appearance), you see Luffy basically quoting himself. Almost same lines he said in chapter 589, which were said basically 10 years prior

Yes, the connective tissue between arcs and the grander world is what truly elevates OP. Individual arcs can range between 6 and 10, but everything contributes to a larger picture. Even arcs I did not care about when I first read them are elevated with time.
SPOILER WARNING TALKING ABOUT MANGA CHAPTERS 1000+ Like how most people used to say skypia was isolated arc with little to no revelence to the whole one piece plot, but now in recent chapters we saw connections between skypia and Sun god and some of the foreshadwings being laid there. Sabo wasn’t really randomly inserted. He was actually teased in another flashback earlier on. During the sake cup flashback in what I think is the middle of the War, there is a 3rd cup on the very left side almost completely chopped off by the panel. But you can still see the tip of the cup and it’s shadow. It’s actually really easy to miss it’s such a small detail. When I saw this online a couple of years ago I had to go back and see it myself and sure enough it was there
@TresspasingToad Ye I never said it wasn't cool. I just don't think Sabo was properly foreshadowed so he feels like he was pulled out of the ass to be a new brother just when ace died.
Malazan and One Piece are my all time favorite series. Very different mediums and writing styles, but both Oda and Erikson are masters in world building and story telling.

I ground to a halt in The Great Hunt with about 2 hours left for over a year. I just am not captivated by the deteriorating world and mostly unlikable characters. I find the characters to be well written but I'm just not invested too see them succeed.
I'm just going to add a bit of praise to Oda here even though it's really late. There's a collectible paper cards in japan about One Piece characters called Vivre Card, basically every major (and minor) characters have their own cards, everything from their name, heights, age, place of birth, and even some minor trivias that Oda couldn't put in the manga due to page limitations. A couple of examples, every single Arabasta's "duck" has names, age, and all other details. Yassop, Ussop's father, one of Shanks crewmate is nicknamed Chaser and feared by many people, and supposed to be mentioned by Garp in Post Enies Lobby, but couldn't due to page limitations. It also revealed shanks seek him out to his hometown due to his reputation as a sharpshooter. There are a lot of trivias like this in Vivre Card, and it's actually cannon because it's from Oda. Some of the little details even made it to the manga. It's literally lores outside of the manga itself. That's how detailed Oda's world is.

So many people disregard anime & manga simply because it "has pictures" (or animation) and is therefore for kids. And I'm definitely 100% on board with the arc reviews instead of saga reviews, even if some might turn out a little short like this one, because I love it if you can talk in more details about the events that happened. I think that if Oda write this in a novel form, he could wrap this story up a lot quicker. There's only so much that he can fit in on the panels and weekly releases.
Now after marineford is over I think it's better to check out the Blackbeard scene in Jaya arc which you kinda brushed off(atleast in the review), it could give more context and meaning to both luffy and Blackbeard. Also ace flashback personally was better post war because I think we were supposed to feel bad for luffy in marineford rather than ace itself. Well that's just how I view it, different people will have different perspectives.....

Daniel you are very lucky, because the next 3 arcs were VERY HARD to read weekly (especially the 3rd one), but on a binge the first 2 become quite enjoyable and the 3rd a masterpiece
I'm so glad you took on this journey! It's been amazing seeing your reviews. And I adore your breakdown of One Piece in that "appeal" section. It truly is a masterful story. I just wanted to throw out some fun tie-ins that I love since the ASL flashback is my personal favorite part of the show. I do love that the expansion on Ace is after his death. Fitting since he found his own life so worthless but loved Luffy so much. It makes that deep bond at the end private and lends to it being more about Luffy and how willing Ace is to die for him. Then, we have the expansion through Luffy's pain on why Ace was so important. He could be the biggest scourge on the world, but, to Luffy, he was the best. For me, I fell for Sabo's inclusion in the group hard. I love the dynamic he brings. And I love his Artful Dodger theme as well as that he'd rather live in the trash with Ace and Luffy than have a comfortable life with his cruel parents. Two foreshadowings of Sabo are the crossed out S is Ace's tattoo(Sabo's pirate mark) and the shadow of a third cup in the sneak peek of the flashback. And the reason for why I love Sabo's existence in the flashback is the extreme ripple effect it's had on the entire show when looking back. 1. The loss of Sabo taught Luffy the consequences of what being a pirate would actually mean. Before, it was all fun and games. Shanks and the crew made the pirate life sound like all fun and parties and doing whatever you want. How could that not appeal to a lonely, bored kid? Sabo became a pirate for freedom. He rushed out too young out of desperation. And his boat was cruelly shot down before everyone. And the Celestial Dragon who did it faced no consequences(of course). Luffy's grandpa, the hero of the marines, couldn't do anything to Sabo's murderer. Ace couldn't do anything. It showed how unfair the world could be. Especially to those who just want to be free. 2. That weight adds so much to Luffy's speech in Drum Island when he protects Dr. Hiriluk's flag for Chopper. When a person raises a pirate flag, they pledge their life to it. They've given up society and safety to forge their own way of life. No one should ever laugh at it. And the pledge you make to it isn't easily destroyed. Sabo died betting his life on his flag, on a better future. No one can laugh or take away what that freedom meant. 3. Luffy's disagreement with Vivi. When she's trying to save everyone and prevent a war, Luffy bluntly and brutally says "People die." Try as you might, you can't save everyone. Luffy thought Sabo was safe when he was fighting alongside Ace for their survival in Grey Terminal. And he was solely worried about Ace surviving/making it back home. As soon as he was happy and relieved Ace was alive and well, he gets the news that Sabo was killed when he wasn't paying attention. You can worry all you like but some things are out of your control. Vivi needed to understand that. And they needed to focus on what they could do to help the most. 4. Luffy declaring war on the world to save Robin. When Spandam talked about the World Government and pointed at their flag, asking Luffy if he understands the enemy he's up against, Luffy says: "I know Robin's enemy very well." Luffy's understood how the world worked because of Sabo's death. If he wants to protect the people he loves, he knows he has to challenge the entire world to a fight. It isn't even just the World Government. It's the entire structure of society and how the world moves forward. He already knew a long time ago that he'd have to face all of that the moment he decided to be a pirate. The moment he wanted to be strong enough to make sure the people he loves aren't taken away from him. It wasn't a hard decision to order Sogeking(Usopp) to burn down the World Government's flag. He'd already decided to declare war on the world a long time ago. If the way of the world could shoot down Sabo's flag and call his desires in life worthless before their imposing figure, Luffy can do the same to their structure and rules and challenge them to try bring him down as easily. 5. Imagine how much better for Luffy it was to finally punch that Celestial Dragon after all those years of never being able to do anything against them for killing Sabo. He knew he was screwed the second he did it, but, dang, it must've felt great. And, lastly, I love that Sabo being the kind one is what made Ace want to change himself for the better. To not be so bitter and mean. After his stubbornness almost got Luffy killed, he knew he needed to be nicer and more patient. So, he modeled his better behavior after Sabo since Luffy always drifted towards the affection and praise Sabo doled out. And it's funny how Ace learned to be more polite and tolerant while Sabo was learning how to be more rude and crass from him. Sorry for the novel, but I adore the added depth so much! I very much look forward to the rest of your journey~!

I gotta say, what makes Zoro's loyalty so powerful is how Oda emphasized Zoro's ambition first so it feels powerful when he casts it aside. Compared to the other strawhats goals, he has a very "do or die" mentality, it was shown in his fight against mihawk. Its not just about putting your life on the line. Its that he'd rather accept death, than lose, than take one step back. This guy is so closely tied to his ambition compared to the other strawhats, that a man such as him doing what he did in thriller bark, and what he does here is just powerful and I appreciate Oda managing convey this duality out of Zoro.

I have always felt the same way about Oda being equal in storytelling to the greats like Robert, Brandon, Tolkien but honestly after the more recent arcs I don’t know if that still holds true. I believe he is on his own level now and it is truly nothing short of awe inspiring and can’t wait to hear more peoples thoughts. Anyone else agree?
Well... Be patient, not yet.... But it will happen.. Cuz wano to me is peak fiction plus all the story beats coming together which was setup in pre time skip.. Truly impressive... Oda said when luffy gets out of wano safely, he's gonna write a story likes of which no one has ever read before and also gonna draw the greastest war in one piece history that'd make Marineford look cute... I believe what ever that last arc is, that's gonna be something that is gonna put him above those fantasy greats to me. Soo let's just wait and seee.....
I wouldn't call oda the best in manga anime. There's some real competition in terms of other manga series. I.E Berserk, Vinland Saga, Monster, etc In terms of world design and fantasy Oda is absolutely the best but those stories i mention have better character and writing overall than One Piece.
Fun fact, between the crew getting seperated and reuniting, two real world years passed. That's how long the Amazon Lily, Impel Down, and Marineford arcs took to publish.
back in Enies Lobby, when Spandam asked Luffy if he had any idea whom he declared war with upon Sogeking shooting the flag, he said something along the lines of "I know Robin's enemies quite well". That was referencing this flashback. As for the new magic system w/ "Haki", I can't remember how much was explained in this arc & how much in the later ones, it's also hard to name them due to different translations, but its like a "spiritual force" that the user has. It's just that 1 "magic", which is more universal compared to the devil fruits. as introduced in the arc, there are 3 ways to actively apply them, 1) physical combat, 2) as a way of "intuition", like an additional sense, & 3) overwhelming the consciousness of others with it, however the latter one is only achievable by a small percentage, & as you've seen from past events, Luffy is 1 of them.
I can't really say if you are reading the cover stories or not cuz this was not the first time we saw what the crew were doing... If your not, you certainly should!!

2 years was chosen for a very specific reason by Oda, in real-world time it had been about 2 years of week-to-week chapters since the crew had been separated. Incredible that as a writer he chose to have Luffy as the only main character we knew really well for a whole 2 years!

I see a lot of people talking about foreshadowing. Here's a fun fact that Daniel probably doesn't know. The current arc of the manga was foreshadowed way back in 2004 around 17 years back.

Plus, Ace's tattoo with S crossed out and has been there since he was introduced, is supposed to represent Sabo being dead. Now, IDK if Oda REALLY planned Sabo that far back, but there you go.

Oda is the King of Foreshadowing
It's really really weak foreshadowing though. No first time reader will notice any of those things and think they mean there is a third brother.
I didnt like Sabo at all when he got introduced.
As for perfect positioning, at least in the case of the timeskip, in this case Kuma did deliberately send them to places he thought they'd like. "Where would you want to go?"
I more meant it kinda consistently happens not just the launching but I did forget that and it justifies it here!

So I happen to be rewatching the anime and am at the moment Kuma showed up at Thriller Bark. I hadn't noted it before, but Perona talks about wanting to vacation in a dark grimy castle, and Kuma actually opens his bible and flips through it. I had always thought it was an actual Religious Book, but I think its almost more an almanac or something of known islands and locations so kuma knows how to YEET people(or himself) properly to places around the world.
One could surmise that when he watched the straw hats fight Moria and fought them himself on Thriller Bark, he got some idea of who each person is and their skills. And when the crisis on the Archipelago happened, he already had figured out where he wanted to YEET them all, and simply executed that plan.
Kuma is one of the most fascinating characters to me in the series, cause so far as I know, not much has been explained as far as how he got into the position he's in as a cyborg.
@@Fissiccisst1 Kuma's ties to the revolutionary government also would allow him access to a ton of intel on the Straw Hats since Dragon would take interest in his son and his crew.
One scene I love is garp letting dadan beat him up. Knowing his status, he could've stopped her at any time or even used haki to just protect his face. But instead he let's her go all out because of his guilt over letting ace die. Top tier character writing without using dialog.
Knowing the Monkey D. family, this was shortly after an offscreen scene, where he beat himself up as an act of self punishment.

Only to add about Sabo's "suddenly" presence in the story. A lot of people agree that he should have been teased more, but Sabo's existence was indeed teased since Ace's introduction:
- Alabasta: Ace's tattoo has an unneeded S crossed out in his arm's tattoo. Even though he is called Ace, the tattoo says Asce.
- From the very start in the manga, the first time that the "Vow of brotherhood" was shown as a tease of a flashback, there was the shadow of a third cup. The theory of a third brother/sister existed since that moment.
- Enies Lobby: When Robin and Spandam try to explain in the rooftop scene what the World Government flag means, Luffy, the same guy that doesn't understand simple structures like Baroque Works, says "I know very well what Robin's enemy is". They already took a brother from him.
Those things don't really tease him though. Nobody would see Ace's tattoo and be like "oh there must be another brother". Those things are just cool little things you can notice on a reread. They don't foreshadow the character at all for first time readers.

@@Gyrados9988 The third cup is so tiny though almost nobody notices that on their first read so it doesn't really foreshadow anything. And the luffy thing makes sense but it also doesn't hint at a brother until you already know about him.
I think a lot of people agreed that the third point is a bit of a stretch. The first two actually makes sense though. But the third one, Luffy just understands who's robin enemy is because of her trauma about the buster call.

I feel like Oda did it like this, because having this flashback before his death would maybe telegraph Aces death more, right? I mean, you have an important character, who shall be executed in this arc - bam flashback how important he is for our main character. And now people start thinking about, that Ace could actually die.
That's how I feel. How it is now hurts more in retrospect and it also hurts more upon reread, but it's more surprising and shocking right now

I think Oda made the right choice. The pacing of Marineford is fast and perfect the way it is. Such a lengthy flashback would have totally ruined the flow and would have taken the reader out of the heat way too much.

In the ASL flashback we see Sabo's signature is a crossed out S, the same on one the tattoo. It might be a retcon, who knows, but the S in ASCE standing for Sabo is canon.

ASL is quite possibly my favourite flashback. That scene with Luffy and Ace on the cliff contemplating life after Sabo’s death literally solidified their dreams 🥺
the thing I like more about that moment is probably Luffy's dialogue. How it clearly states what he thinks. And he has always thought throughout the series.
Actually, if you look back at chapter 387 (the one in which Luffy uses Gear 2nd for the first time), you see that Luffy is actually quoting himself from THAT moment 10 years prior

Can't help but mention Ace's tatoo at this point since you mentioned luffy's "tattoo" with the message. Ace his ASCE(crossed S) is a rememberance towards Sabo whose jolly roger(flag) was a crossed S.
Also cause Sabo is dead. There’s a cover page showing grown up Ace, Sabo, and Luffy, and in that alternate universe Ace’s tattoo doesn’t have the crossed out S.

Thank you for saying that Oda is there with the greats. I get a lot of skepticism when I say One Piece is one of the greatest fantasy fic Epic of our time. Up there or even better than WoT, SA and Dresden Files. But on top of being a great storyteller, Oda is also a top notch artist. His art panels have been getting subtly better, more beautiful and more fluid as the series progresses
I always say that reading One Piece is probably what the ancient greeks felt like living through the development of the Illiad or the Odyssey
I am actually someone who loves the fact that the ace sabo luffy flashback was after the marineford arc. Certain things would've been too obvious imo if the flashback happened before the war. Things hit much harder because the flashback came after and not before but hey, maybe that's just me. I personally wouldn't change the timeline of events.
I cried three times during one piece, and in this arc it's the only time I cried without Luffy being the reason. Dadan beating Garp made me cry so hard.
I cry every time I read/watch that scene.
Love how you perfectly described what makes One Piece so great and why Oda is an exceptional autor. There are still too many people who try their hardest to downplay the series and Odas talent for whatever stupid reason. While I never downplayed the series, I generally stayed away from it due to the art style. Same reason I stayed away from Jojo's until Part 4 was airing. Though his and Merphy's reviews convinced me to read it when I get free time (whenever that'll be -_-)

I like how you mention Oda's structuring at the end and I think structurally what he did with Luffy and Ace's backstory is so much better than if we had it beforehand. Like you said in your previous video you didn't have an attachment to Ace. You felt for Luffy's loss which was intended. Now, after knowing Luffy for so long having a more thorough fleshing out of his childhood and getting to know Ace on a more intimate level you get to mourn his death a second time and in a different way. It's something I don't think most authors would do, but personally it hits better the way Oda did it.

I'm so glad you hit on how amazing Oda is at world-building and planning. People who don't read One Piece always scoff when I call it a literary epic. It's very validating to have that claim confirmed by someone well-read in the genre.
Oh, speaking of Oda planning things you mentioned how convenient it was for the crew to all land in places that would help them grow. It was definitely convenient, but its also widely believed to be intentional. In so much as Kuma sent the crew to the islands best suited for them.
Right? I always thought that was just accepted canon, considering that Kuma sent Perona exactly where she said she wanted to go, so we know he has the necessary control to do that and considering he's a well-travelled sorta fella, no reason he wouldn't know the best places for each crew member.

Oda actually did a one month break after the timeskip. Since then Oda fit in more regular breaks, every month he pauses for a week.
Otherwise he is the hardest working man like ever. He gets up at 5 am and does One Piece until 2 am with shorts break for family, food and other bodily needs and this is every day since 1997.
He is absolutely insane and deserves every break, he takes

I like to thank you for doing this. It's feels so validating for us fans when books readers such as yourself and Merphy truly acknowledge the series. Most people brush off One Piece or manga in general because they don't count it in the same level as written novels. "Manga is more casual, it's never gonna be as good as a good book".

Luffy counting his fingers while remembering his crew was just precious. Also (i watched the anime on this part) zoro knowing that it wasnt luffy's idea to go back and ring the bell but not being able to see the message straight away was funny
Honestly Oda should be placed among the all time greats in terms of fantasy writing just for the world he has made because it feels like a real breathing world not one just created for the sake of the protagonists. With that said this is afiller arc and there is nothing wrong with that from time to time.

When you see Luffy in chapter 387 (Gear 2nd first appearance), you see Luffy basically quoting himself. Almost same lines he said in chapter 589, which were said basically 10 years prior
I loved your explanation of the "Appeal of One Piece". It was the greatest thing I've heard and praise I've heard for One Piece and it made me really god damn happy. Thank you for stating that Oda's name and writing, is in the same league as Tolkien, RJ, Sanderson, and will be spoken in the same breath as them. Also, I love your understanding on how he is in the "MANGA" medium, so his name isn't even shown to the "greatest authors of all time". I am grateful that you understood that, your comprehension of One Piece is just growing and growing!
Yes, the connective tissue between arcs and the grander world is what truly elevates OP. Individual arcs can range between 6 and 10, but everything contributes to a larger picture. Even arcs I did not care about when I first read them are elevated with time.

Sabo wasn’t really randomly inserted. He was actually teased in another flashback earlier on. During the sake cup flashback in what I think is the middle of the War, there is a 3rd cup on the very left side almost completely chopped off by the panel. But you can still see the tip of the cup and it’s shadow. It’s actually really easy to miss it’s such a small detail. When I saw this online a couple of years ago I had to go back and see it myself and sure enough it was there

Malazan and One Piece are my all time favorite series. Very different mediums and writing styles, but both Oda and Erikson are masters in world building and story telling.

I ground to a halt in The Great Hunt with about 2 hours left for over a year. I just am not captivated by the deteriorating world and mostly unlikable characters. I find the characters to be well written but I'm just not invested too see them succeed.
I love how plainly you summarized how fun it is to read one piece on just a story level. YES.
I'm just going to add a bit of praise to Oda here even though it's really late.
There's a collectible paper cards in japan about One Piece characters called Vivre Card, basically every major (and minor) characters have their own cards, everything from their name, heights, age, place of birth, and even some minor trivias that Oda couldn't put in the manga due to page limitations.
A couple of examples, every single Arabasta's "duck" has names, age, and all other details.
Yassop, Ussop's father, one of Shanks crewmate is nicknamed Chaser and feared by many people, and supposed to be mentioned by Garp in Post Enies Lobby, but couldn't due to page limitations. It also revealed shanks seek him out to his hometown due to his reputation as a sharpshooter.
There are a lot of trivias like this in Vivre Card, and it's actually cannon because it's from Oda. Some of the little details even made it to the manga.
It's literally lores outside of the manga itself. That's how detailed Oda's world is.

So many people disregard anime & manga simply because it "has pictures" (or animation) and is therefore for kids.
And I'm definitely 100% on board with the arc reviews instead of saga reviews, even if some might turn out a little short like this one, because I love it if you can talk in more details about the events that happened.
And sidenote: in-depth character reviews/analyses are also something I'd love to see from you! keep it up!

I think that if Oda write this in a novel form, he could wrap this story up a lot quicker. There's only so much that he can fit in on the panels and weekly releases.

Now after marineford is over I think it's better to check out the Blackbeard scene in Jaya arc which you kinda brushed off(atleast in the review), it could give more context and meaning to both luffy and Blackbeard.
Also ace flashback personally was better post war because I think we were supposed to feel bad for luffy in marineford rather than ace itself. Well that's just how I view it, different people will have different perspectives.....

Daniel you are very lucky, because the next 3 arcs were VERY HARD to read weekly (especially the 3rd one), but on a binge the first 2 become quite enjoyable and the 3rd a masterpiece

I'm so glad you took on this journey! It's been amazing seeing your reviews. And I adore your breakdown of One Piece in that "appeal" section. It truly is a masterful story.
I just wanted to throw out some fun tie-ins that I love since the ASL flashback is my personal favorite part of the show. I do love that the expansion on Ace is after his death. Fitting since he found his own life so worthless but loved Luffy so much. It makes that deep bond at the end private and lends to it being more about Luffy and how willing Ace is to die for him. Then, we have the expansion through Luffy's pain on why Ace was so important. He could be the biggest scourge on the world, but, to Luffy, he was the best.
For me, I fell for Sabo's inclusion in the group hard. I love the dynamic he brings. And I love his Artful Dodger theme as well as that he'd rather live in the trash with Ace and Luffy than have a comfortable life with his cruel parents.
Two foreshadowings of Sabo are the crossed out S is Ace's tattoo(Sabo's pirate mark) and the shadow of a third cup in the sneak peek of the flashback.
And the reason for why I love Sabo's existence in the flashback is the extreme ripple effect it's had on the entire show when looking back.
1. The loss of Sabo taught Luffy the consequences of what being a pirate would actually mean. Before, it was all fun and games. Shanks and the crew made the pirate life sound like all fun and parties and doing whatever you want. How could that not appeal to a lonely, bored kid? Sabo became a pirate for freedom. He rushed out too young out of desperation. And his boat was cruelly shot down before everyone. And the Celestial Dragon who did it faced no consequences(of course). Luffy's grandpa, the hero of the marines, couldn't do anything to Sabo's murderer. Ace couldn't do anything. It showed how unfair the world could be. Especially to those who just want to be free.
2. That weight adds so much to Luffy's speech in Drum Island when he protects Dr. Hiriluk's flag for Chopper. When a person raises a pirate flag, they pledge their life to it. They've given up society and safety to forge their own way of life. No one should ever laugh at it. And the pledge you make to it isn't easily destroyed. Sabo died betting his life on his flag, on a better future. No one can laugh or take away what that freedom meant.
3. Luffy's disagreement with Vivi. When she's trying to save everyone and prevent a war, Luffy bluntly and brutally says "People die." Try as you might, you can't save everyone. Luffy thought Sabo was safe when he was fighting alongside Ace for their survival in Grey Terminal. And he was solely worried about Ace surviving/making it back home. As soon as he was happy and relieved Ace was alive and well, he gets the news that Sabo was killed when he wasn't paying attention. You can worry all you like but some things are out of your control. Vivi needed to understand that. And they needed to focus on what they could do to help the most.
4. Luffy declaring war on the world to save Robin. When Spandam talked about the World Government and pointed at their flag, asking Luffy if he understands the enemy he's up against, Luffy says: "I know Robin's enemy very well." Luffy's understood how the world worked because of Sabo's death. If he wants to protect the people he loves, he knows he has to challenge the entire world to a fight. It isn't even just the World Government. It's the entire structure of society and how the world moves forward. He already knew a long time ago that he'd have to face all of that the moment he decided to be a pirate. The moment he wanted to be strong enough to make sure the people he loves aren't taken away from him. It wasn't a hard decision to order Sogeking(Usopp) to burn down the World Government's flag. He'd already decided to declare war on the world a long time ago. If the way of the world could shoot down Sabo's flag and call his desires in life worthless before their imposing figure, Luffy can do the same to their structure and rules and challenge them to try bring him down as easily.
5. Imagine how much better for Luffy it was to finally punch that Celestial Dragon after all those years of never being able to do anything against them for killing Sabo. He knew he was screwed the second he did it, but, dang, it must've felt great.
And, lastly, I love that Sabo being the kind one is what made Ace want to change himself for the better. To not be so bitter and mean. After his stubbornness almost got Luffy killed, he knew he needed to be nicer and more patient. So, he modeled his better behavior after Sabo since Luffy always drifted towards the affection and praise Sabo doled out. And it's funny how Ace learned to be more polite and tolerant while Sabo was learning how to be more rude and crass from him.

And yeah there's some growing pains in this arc, it's a transition between two eras of narrative history.
I gotta say, what makes Zoro's loyalty so powerful is how Oda emphasized Zoro's ambition first so it feels powerful when he casts it aside. Compared to the other strawhats goals, he has a very "do or die" mentality, it was shown in his fight against mihawk. Its not just about putting your life on the line. Its that he'd rather accept death, than lose, than take one step back. This guy is so closely tied to his ambition compared to the other strawhats, that a man such as him doing what he did in thriller bark, and what he does here is just powerful and I appreciate Oda managing convey this duality out of Zoro.

A lot of people don't pick up on the story structure but I'm so glad you did because it's sooo cool and unique and makes the series so good, this is especially stressed in the second half of one piece so I think you'll really like that alot, even though it's not done

I have always felt the same way about Oda being equal in storytelling to the greats like Robert, Brandon, Tolkien but honestly after the more recent arcs I don’t know if that still holds true. I believe he is on his own level now and it is truly nothing short of awe inspiring and can’t wait to hear more peoples thoughts. Anyone else agree?
Well... Be patient, not yet.... But it will happen.. Cuz wano to me is peak fiction plus all the story beats coming together which was setup in pre time skip.. Truly impressive... Oda said when luffy gets out of wano safely, he's gonna write a story likes of which no one has ever read before and also gonna draw the greastest war in one piece history that'd make Marineford look cute... I believe what ever that last arc is, that's gonna be something that is gonna put him above those fantasy greats to me. Soo let's just wait and seee.....

I wouldn't call oda the best in manga anime. There's some real competition in terms of other manga series. I.E Berserk, Vinland Saga, Monster, etc In terms of world design and fantasy Oda is absolutely the best but those stories i mention have better character and writing overall than One Piece.

It's my headcanon, but I think he gives every single cathegory a 10, but with Pacing a 9 or an 8. I don't think he sways too much from it.
Fun fact, between the crew getting seperated and reuniting, two real world years passed. That's how long the Amazon Lily, Impel Down, and Marineford arcs took to publish.
back in Enies Lobby, when Spandam asked Luffy if he had any idea whom he declared war with upon Sogeking shooting the flag, he said something along the lines of "I know Robin's enemies quite well". That was referencing this flashback.
As for the new magic system w/ "Haki", I can't remember how much was explained in this arc & how much in the later ones, it's also hard to name them due to different translations, but its like a "spiritual force" that the user has. It's just that 1 "magic", which is more universal compared to the devil fruits. as introduced in the arc, there are 3 ways to actively apply them, 1) physical combat, 2) as a way of "intuition", like an additional sense, & 3) overwhelming the consciousness of others with it, however the latter one is only achievable by a small percentage, & as you've seen from past events, Luffy is 1 of them.
I can't really say if you are reading the cover stories or not cuz this was not the first time we saw what the crew were doing... If your not, you certainly should!!

I LOVED your explanation of the appeal of One Piece and of Oda as a fantasy master. I’ve felt the exact same way and tried to explain this a few times, but not as well as you just did.
Erikson and Tolkien are great examples of similar works of world and story building that I’ve experienced too, and it’s a great parallel.
