Really good video and especially the tip on how to remove the connector clips from the coils as I broke one today doing exactly what you said not to do. LOL
I own a 2006 Scion xB bought it new. Great car, but it started the miss. Watched your video and now know that I can do the job. Priced the coils at the local parts store, and they wanted $275 for 4 of them. Went to ebay and found four OEM coils for $75. Got the OEM spark plugs while I was there.
@@saabtech3510 Once again, thanks for the video. I have installed the new plugs, and coils. xB runs like new, smooth and more power. Only question, is there a way to reset the check eng. , VSP, and Traction control warning lights? Can your scanner be able to do that?
@@bobdavis3062 In some cases if you disconnect the battery for a few minutes, it will reset. And sometimes the lights will reset on their own after it self tests the systems over the course of a few days. If not, a scan tool will be needed to clear the codes, also in case something else has triggered a code you can find that out. Not uncommon to have a few things go wrong close together and not always related problems.
Thank you for your time and effort for helping and educating us. I have an 05 Psion TC. I’m getting a random misfire in all four cylinders. Do you know what may cause this? I assume the timing is off, with that be correct?
One thing to check is the spark plugs. Use only OE. (Original equipment) Timing should not be off. It is computer controlled. Also make sure no vacuum hoses are leaking.
No link, but I now recommend only OE parts from a reliable source, like the Toyota Dealer. The internet is now majority counterfeit parts that lead to nothing but problems. Bite the bullet, put in 4 new OE coils, and 4 new OE plugs. In the long run you will be rewarded.
My mom has one same year. Hers has 348,xxx and counting. Replaced all spark plugs and coils and it will intermittently run bad. But I got a catalytic code so we’re gonna try running some 93 octane and drive it like she stole it. Hopefully that’ll help.
I've seen many videos on how to correct a misfire code by replacing the coil or coil pack and plugs as well. What I would like to know is what caused the misfire in the first place? Ignition Timing, oxygen sensor(s) or fuel pump or something else? Any direction would help. I'm working on a 2008 Scion xD 1.8L
@@saabtech3510 that makes sense, but in my case it's repetitive... I've replaced the plugs every 6mos, and I'm on my 3rd set of coils just since 2022... Which leads me to believe there's something causing the misfire. I'm currently checking on TDC alignment and cylinder compression. Not sure how to check the fuel pump other than just replacing it. Lastly I'll see about the injectors. Engine has 193K miles (2ZR-FE)
@@el.handyman It's not likely any of those things. Most likely it is cheap and/or counterfeit parts. The parts are so bad now, that they don't last. I think you will be chasing your tail. My advice is to go to the dealer itself, and purchase the OE parts. (bite the bullet) The OE parts on ebay etc. are almost always counterfeit now. Even the spark plugs. I only buy my parts now directly from the dealer for my Toyota and my Lexus. (Fuel pump, timing, etc. will NOT cause the coils to fail.) Was carefull with the clips but they still broke, very brittle. Easy to replace the connectors though. Thanks for the great video. Now have a bouncing idle in neutral. Air intake gasket leak? Appreciate any ideas.
My 05 Scion tc had a blinking engine light and hesitated on acceleration, but had a steady idle. I changed the plugs and coils with good ones and then it would just die when idling?
Carefully check your work, and for anything loose or detached under the hood. Also, try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes. Sometimes the computer has to "relearn" the proper idle.
Trying to diagnose my 2011 Scion coils, my local shop is struggling and I’m looking into it myself now. They replaced all 4 about two years ago, and one has failed about every 6 months…any ideas? Could this be a control unit problem? Bad connections at the coils?
The aftermarket coils are very prone to failure. In my opinion only OE Denso coils should be used. Also, be sure the clips on the connectors are not broken. Very brittle. Secure with a small wire tie if needed.
I may just go get those and fix myself before it happens again. Usually notice a rough idle when in park or at a stop light, gets worse over time and then a failure occurs…it’s happened 3 times now! Thank you for the quick reply and advice!!
Just ran the scanner on my moms 06. Says misfire in cylinder 3/coil. Checked the plugs and might as well replace them as well. As for the coils does it matter which one goes where when I order the new ones?

You need to change the coil after diagnosis and lookout for breaking Electricial lines to the coil also. Remove and service the injectors.. you are good to go!!!!!!
my 2001 toyota echo had a bad upstream o2 sensor. it made my car misfire like crazy. i was able to isolate the misfiring problem to that o2 sensor by unplugging the wire harness to the o2 sensor. when unplugged, it drove perfect-- no misfiring. i didn't know a bad o2 sensor could make a car run so terrible! i will leave it unplugged until the new one i ordered arrives (permanently leaving it unplugged would permanently affect my MPG...) if you havent sorted your car out yet, unplug the upstream o2 sensor, then take the car for a quick drive. if it runs perfect-- its the o2 sensor. if it doesnt change how it runs, try unplugging the downstream o2 sensor and see if that changes its performance.
Try swapping 2 of the new coils and see if the misfire moves. Maybe a defective part. Check the plug too. Also check the connection to the coil. If all that fails, might need to check cylinder compression.
My cylinders were leaking oil so my coiI packs were full of oil I replaced the valve cover gasket cleaned off the coils and stuck them back in then changed out my spark plugs, still running a little rough so I changed the crank shaft sensor and it’s still idling/misfiring. Parts simply get old and worn and fail. Also, if the plug gaps are allowed to get too large over time, it stresses the coils.
