I'll always have a soft spot for Eve of the Daleks. In fact, all three of Chibnall's Dalek episodes are great as far as I'm concerned. They're easily the highlight of his era. Resolution and Revolution of the Daleks make a great action-packed double-feature, and Eve of the Daleks is always a fun watch

It's kind of a trilogy too, which is a pretty cool idea if you ask me (though Eve is more part of it thematically)

i don’t necessarily mind when he ducks and the daleks shoot each other, because that’s at least somewhat creative, it’s all the other times that they dodge the daleks in this enclosed corridors just by… running? that annoys me.

Thank you for the video, Vera!
As a self-contained episode, it is fine for the most part. However, Nick and Sarah's relationship is a problem. As you mentioned, being aware about neurodiversity, it could explain Nick's behavior of storing and cataloguing the objects left by his exes. But he visiting the storage facility every New Year's Eve during the last three years in order to see Sarah just comes out as creepy. She lashing out on him, and Nick feeling shame and deciding to face the Dalek to be killed was also too much! Sarah has every right of being mad for having to do an ungrateful job shift during holidays, but come on! And both of them deciding to become a couple (implicitly) soon after the main events of the episode is very bizarre. If that happened at least some time later, after they had become initially just friends, would be better.
And the mentions about Jeff during the episode felt like "Chekhov's guns". Except for the combustive materials and fireworks used to destroy the facility, the character storing prohibited items and apparently living there seems to be building the plot for something and ends in nothing. Seriously, Jeff being revealed and finally appearing at the end during the explosion scene would make a lot more sense than Karl, the crane operator from the episode "The Woman Who Fell To Earth".

Yeah, the Sarah and Nick relationship is just trauma-bonding to the Nth degree. I just really don't see them as a 'good' pairing and can only imagine what a train wreck their relationship will probably end up as. They are just so ill-suited.

I remember being confused why the Daleks know they're in a time loop and remembering the previous. But yeah, this is a good and fun episode, especially considering it's Chibnal
A shortening time loop was also done in the last season of Agents of Shield in a fantastic episode.

Appreciated they acknowledged that Yaz and Dan had recently spent FOUR YEARS traveling without the Doctor and touched on how that might change/grow the characters. (Apparently not enough that they've changed their "standard" Street Clothes/Outfits and/or maybe fall into some "old time" solution or banter, only to realize there is a modern (easier) solution or people are confused by their slang... maybe bewildered how thier adventures across the world took so long... Not realizing the Panama Canal and Airplanes weren't yet available options yet.

I thought this episode was difficult to enjoy for a lot of reasons, but specifically on the topic of Nick, immediately before Sarah calls Nick weird, doesn't Yaz ask, to his face, if his ex-girlfriends are still alive, implying that his behaviour is in line with a serial killer? I don't mind Sarah calling him weird, honestly, because he kind of is, especially from her perspective, but for Yaz and Dan to then get on her case for saying something way less harsh than what Yaz said was wiiiiiild.

It's a weird recurring trend with this era, going all the way back to the first episode, where the Doctor subjected "Tim Shaw" to the horrific fate of having his DNA melted, only to then have a go at Karl for kicking him off the crane. Supporting characters will be criticised and shamed for doing something questionable, while the main characters get no criticism for doing the exact same thing, or something even more dubious ("protagonist-centred morality", as TV tropes calls it)

Agent's of SH|ELD had a similar time loop although in their episode only 2 people remembered they were in a time loop. Here it's interesting that the only person not knowing they are in a time loop is Sarah's mum Mary. Some bits are weird like Mary would never call at Midnight and then suddenly she does. They make comments about Nick being a bit weird and then suddenly he and Sarah are off traveling after the storage units are all destroyed. Yasmin discussing her feelings for The Doctor are slightly forced from a semi-last minute decision but is still written well. I get confused as to why Karl from The Woman Who Fell to Earth suddenly shows up at the end?

Going from the decline of Flux, to the decent fun of Eve, to the sloppy editing of Sea Devils, to the ... great but hollow finale, is such a whiplash. Good luck Vera, I feel like Legend Of The Sea Devils will frustrate you and the finale will be mixed depending on whether you focus on the master dancing and the companions, or focus on all the stuff that got dropped and how it represents Chibnalls run overall.

Totally agree with you on the analysis and my opinion is that this gets more negatively viewed due to it's proximity to flux. If this was a mid-season Matt Smith episode from like season 5 or 6 I feel people would cut it more slack.
Oh dear though.....now the Sea Devils. I have never been able to get over that episode since I could never work out the point of it. Why does the woman need to cut the stone from the statue? Why is it never brought up again? When it turns out there is a mystical object why is it another stone and not THAT stone???? More casual sacrificing of characters! Terrible Thasmin content!!! I legit think it's the worst episode of all of Chibnall. Interested to see what good you can find in it because you are a stronger person that me to re-watch it!

  • @DigiRangerScott
    @DigiRangerScott Рік тому +5

I mean, Eve of the Daleks is fine. Time loop stories tend to be. They made some of the best episodes of Legends of Tomorrow and Agents of SHIELD. But Legend of the Sea Devils needed to show that the show can have other holiday specials if need be. Not that Planet of the Dead held such great ties, or was that much of a standout but Sea Devils needed to be on par with it quality-wise and it just didn’t. I think I tried at least a second or third time but noooooope.
Power of the Doctor delivered greatly as a story on its own, an exit story, and an anniversary special even if not its own. As a post-Flux story and having such proximity to Timeless Child I think being part of that fallout is just too heavy a burden that Chibnall couldn’t even handle the mess of his own making so he brushed it aside.

It’s a good conceit, the reducing time loop, but Agents of Shield did it in season (I think) 7. However, while I preferred the AOS episode, I think this explained the conceit better.

I guess I just don't like it when Daleks are used for comedy when they're usually used to be threatening. I would genuinely much rather have a dumb one-off villain like the Abzorbaloff rather than abusing an existing villain for it. idk, maybe I'd appreciate Eve of the Daleks more on a rewatch.

It’s well done for the most part and it’s a clever way around the pandemic restrictions that were still in place at the time by making it like a bottle episode only having one location to shoot in instead of having to worry about the safety of actors and crew going from location to location

  • @NicoleM_radiantbaby

While I like this one pretty well as a self-contained story, it still irks me that the ramifications of the Flux seemed to have...just disappeared from the narrative? Like what happened to most of the universe being eaten away? Does the Doctor (and her 'fam') even care about all that death and destruction?
And finally, as much as I loved the idea of Thasmin, this episode only reminds me of the upcoming queer bait and switch. They just dangled it right in our faces...only to drop the ball. Which, I guess, in the end, is what Chibnall does best: clumsily drops the ball on story beats, leaving many unsatisfied. 😒

I’d give Chibnall’s best script to Power of the Doctor, but this is a close second IMO. To be honest his dalek trilogy is his strongest work at least in his era of who

10:56 This was my problem with the entire episode. Not just for pacing, but the plausibility of the characters having long and drawn-out discussions when they're in a life or death situation. Frankly, it even bothered me that they were making quips at a time like this. The tone was just too silly for my liking. Had it been a story involving characters that I like, *maybe* I could have enjoyed the "fun" aspects of it. But I was just so burned out with Thirteen and the Fam at this point, it was hard to enjoy a single story they were in. That being said, I did come up with a plan to save it and still keep Thasmin in the episode:
Cut out the confession scene with Yaz and Dan. Add a new scene where the Doctor is killed in the time loop but has time to regenerate. Yaz is visibly distressed by this, but this will be explained later. Cast the most amazing guest star you can find to play the 14th Doctor and when the time loop resets she is back to being Whittaker again. Then at the end of the episode, she asks what was wrong. Yaz has, of course, never seen regeneration before, but there has to be more to it than that? Then she confesses her feelings for the Doctor, saying that she didn't just want to travel with any old Doctor - she wanted *this one* in particular, and seeing the Doctor become someone else was too much for her to bear (and maybe have her accidentally use the word "love").
As a bonus, this would explain why she had to leave so suddenly at the end of _Power of._

I think it's fair to use the word fun as much as you did. I don't think it's Chibnall's best but it's probably the most fun of his own scrips since Dinosaurs on a Space Ship, and the most fun of his era. So I say go and use that word to your hearts content, because this episode is fun.
