Hi i have a 97 grand prix gtp it runs i drive all of a sudden no trans wont move shut of wait a few it will move again but after a bit no trans again please do you have any ideas otherwise the trans works great
Found a clean 140 k GTP coupe. If trans fluid has not been changed should I or leave it be? did this on 97 cadillac deville base and then it developed a tcc failure code ses code. these cars have stronger motors but are transmissions same and is a tcc fail point on this car also.it has same set of tires for last 5 years with good tread just age cracking so it seems well cared for. same owner 20 years since new before me from new until pandemic... what about the foggy head and side lights and sun cracked taillights- replaced or upgrade?new bulbs fixed it but took an hour cleaning rust /sediment from the bad bulb sockets, most used parts cars are in same condition. Love the car, really comfortable, great with gas and can idle in 90-110 summer heat and never overheat in traffic, motor feels stronger than newer cars and easier to service. Is there an auto diagnose mode with obd by pushing ac control buttons to see the codes?
@@SalemDoyle I live in NY and bought my Car in North Carolina. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with 250,000 miles on it ( bought it with 180,000) and it's a Money Pit . There's always something breaking down with it , engine lights coming on all the time, leaks everywhere. I'm getting kinda tired of putting more Money into it . I have Spent more than Double what I paid for but right now with The Car Crisis and Used car prices don't know what to do ☹️. My Previous Car was a Mazda and it was less problems than this one.
Spoiler gaskets shrink with age, cut out roofing tile, works perfect. Lower front control arm make a popping noise when driven over small bumps. Check for rusty rocker panels above Mason Dixon Line.
Just came across this video after owning a 08 GT that has 118xxxkm but sat for 5-6 years without driving. It’s currently 4 am but will be checking her out thoroughly tomorrow(in 5 hrs…)Thanks!
Thanks for the videos. Mine's a 2003 GTP bought new and garaged all this time. In the fall of '17 it started dying in traffic. Engine would be warmed up and everything is working fine and then it would just die. No codes. No stutter. Just dead. Sit and let it cool for a few minutes and it would start right up and run like a top. The CPS was the culprit, had heat issues. Had that replaced and it's been running great ever since.
I've had a GTP since '02. I would also add that you should fill the supercharger oil at each oil change. Mine was almost bone dry when I bought it with 14k.
Wait, there's separate oil for the Supercharger???? I did NOT know that! I have an '02 GTP as well, one of those NASCAR Limited Edition Grand Prixs. It's an '02, but I've only had it since 2019. Before that I drove a super rusty '03 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, so I've never owned a car with a supercharger before. This is good to know! Thanks SO MUCH for bringing it up!! Off to my owner's manual to find out what this is all about.
I agree. If you baby it, and keep up on the frequent maintainence, they are beautiful cars which are really fun ti drive. They are great cars for modding, and the 3800 is pretty novice friendly.
Don't I know it. I'm in New England, and say the rockers are highly over-rated. None of my cars in the past 10-20 years have been able to keep rockers on them, yet they still go....(for a while)
Drill holes and shoot any kind of oil into the rockers ,under chassis rails a frame front rails doors trunk, inner quarters rear coil towers rear bumper and supports hood coil towers battery mount fenders wheel arches ,if you want get crazy pull out seats and carpet and do floors and floor pan install plastic put down carpet and reinstall seats do it annually if you want the car to survive winter salt
I just got an 08 Grand Prix base model this year that had 48k miles and the body was in near perfect shape. The previous owner was an elderly man who took decent care of it and didn't beat on it. So far other than the water pump impeller bearing going out and the belt nearly flying off it's been very reliable and is incredibly fun to drive.
I have a 2002 GTP 40th anniversary still going strong with 244,500 miles on it. Out of the 5 thing u listed I only had the lower intake problem. I love this car, to bad they don't make Pontiacs anymore
Just got a 07 gtp with 222,000. First gear is slipping. Prolly will have transmission rebuilt soon. But i drained and refilled the supercharger oil and now only use 93 for gas. Runs so much better now.
Thanks for the info. Just bought a red 97 GTP with no tranny motion. Just got a used one with 102k which is going In this week. Then new rotors, break pads, new fuel, spark plugs, wires, and tires. Definitely fun cars
Owned several 1999 gt, 2004gt and 2006gxp . Several, things I recommend change all fluids annually except oil every 4500 -5000 using quality synthetic and filter . Also oil undercoat entire car drill 1/2 holes and get undercoating plugs at local car part supplier . If you have the 5.3 gxp install a large transmission cooler in line with the rad cooler and change transmission fluid to full synthetic like MAXlife make sure it dextron 6 compatible while doing that install header heat rap to the exhaust running over the starter and transmission . If you have any tic tic on start up run some wynns engine tune up in the oil to clean lifters gradually and it not to aggressive . My gxp runs 5-40 synthetic and some rislone engine oil leak stopper for oil leaks and few 0z motorkote.I did change my valve cover gaskets and rubber grommets but had a few other minor leaks from pan the rislone completely dried up the leaks by swelling them slightly, also in Ontario Canada any dripping will cause you to fail the safety check so this was a lot easier than pulling the engine lolo. My gxp I purchased very cheaply because transmission was burned and it had a tic needed some minor body work on rear wheel arches brakes , repaired heads up display , CD player , redyed front seats rockers ,new battery ,fix a/c , installed new rad , new filter for lifters and oil pressure sensor ,repainted calipers , repaired rockers, drilled and oil undercoated every thing . Touched up paint and paint restoration it black and looks new now all in $ 4300.00 Canadian minus my 200 hours of labour lolol. The gxp gets great gas milage on 402 highway at 110km or 70 mph get 32 with cruse on . So to keep Transmission going on the v8 5.3 reduce heat with a big cooler change fluid to synthetic dextron 6 compatible fluid ,wrap exhaust going over transmission and do fluid changes annually
Hey thanks a lot for the heads up on things that could go wrong with my GTP! I've had mine for about 5 years with minimal issues with this car even after almost a hundred sixty-three thousand miles! It is a great GTP🚗🚗🚗!
Another thing to look for when buying one is ignition and electrical issues most people scrap them when they turn the heat or other accessories on and lose their headlights and computer or the obd port doesn't work it's just a $30 ignition switch and a 10 minute fix
W-body biggest issue is rust GM ingenious idea to put foam sealer between every body panel that wick's and holds moisture. I have three of these cars and currently making one RWD so believe me I know these cars extremely well.
Yup. If you live anywhere where they salt the roads, rust is by far the biggest issue imho. Even bigger than a bad trans or popped piston. Used trannies and engines are cheap and plentiful. But most 2-gen w-bodies around me have horribly rusted rocker panels and pinch welds. And older w-bodies (including older 2-gens) had issues with the rear strut towers completely rusting out and separating from the body. Owned one that was 75% of the way there before I junked it. lol. It's really too bad because the drivetrains are stout (even the trans with proper routine maintenance and not abusing it) and the cars are probably one of the easiest and cheapest to work on.
I currently have 3 w bodies 00 ls monty w/425000 miles on the original 3.4 but 2nd 4t65, 04 ss sc monty- thats my modder, and an 04 grand prix gt. You're absolutely right about maintenance is key, thats why my 2000 has lasted so long and very dependable. One other thing ive noticed thats pretty common is the fuel gauge gets lazyafter about 150,000. Thanks for the info you put out here
Can you define lazy?.. regarding the fuel gauge.,. Mine is lazy but not sure if thats the word.. When i fill it up all the way, 17 gallons, the gauge shows less than and the obd scanner tool I use shows 87% full.. sometimes that number changes.. up and down.. sometimes its accurate to 100% 2008 GP with the v6 3.8l.. nothing special. 320K.. New radiator.. water pump.. alt.. crankshaft pully and seal Power Steering pump has a mild whine to it.. even tho it has plenty of fluid it it. replaced accel pedal because of lean mode issue.. didn't solve.. Still goes into lean mode.. low power mode.. so it has to be the tps thats attached to the throttle body.. idle relearn scares me tho when i remove and replace.. however the replacement won't be new. Sorry.. that was a mouthful... any ideas? suggestions regarding the gas issue or the idle relearn? in your experience, any throttle body/TPS issues?
I have a 2000 Grand Prix GT and the trunk and the driver's side door leaks. It has 270,000 miles on it and it leaks power steering fluid and oil but I still have the confidence to take it on long trips.
@@shawndamccormick278 Not a whole lot besides a significant facelift of the coke bottle styling for the 2004 model year, and a 20 hp bump to the GTP model and the addition of the Comp G package for the GT. Also, all 04 GP's got a Series III version of the 3800 V6.
They are good cars with 3.8 I have owned 3 . The 3.8 normally aspirated is best for a daily driver . There are 2 plastic elbows on the water pump that can crack with age check . If the water pump goes it’s cheap and easy to replace the 2 plastic elbows can be replaced with aluminum ones that last forever I paid $19.95 here in Canada for elbows the pump cost $57 . Actually these car are easy to repair . I did purchase a gxp Grand Prix 2006 it harder to work on than the 3.8 because it’s larger and takes more room . I bought the gxp for $1200 from a used dealer as-is I had to do quite a few repairs including the transmission repaired heads up display brakes rockers minor body work paint touch up then dyed front leather seats oil undercoated every nook and cranny of the cars metal unibody lines trunk doors . The gxp is all original unmolested except original owner replace the mufflers with stainless aftermarket ones no clue what brand they sound nice . The cars black on black and I touched it up polished the car applied carnauba wax the Alcoa rims were mint and the car look better than new so for just under $3990 it’s was great deal but I don’t count my labour lolol
Hey there! I just recently bought my own GTP, a 99' with 123k miles on it. Runs like new, but it's got a few issues. Tensioner pulley is bad, I can hear it rattle occasionally, leak under the glovebox when it rains like a monsoon outside, needs new headlights (the old ones are oxidized) and some very, very minor rust spots (about .5mm in diameter) on random places on the body. Door drop on the driver side (no idea where to start with that one haha, figured just changing the hinges would help) but other than that, she is mint!
I can vouch for this being the problem on my Buick because I actually saw water dripping under the glovebox from where the blower motor was and I felt that the cabin air filter was wet when I check it. The cabin air filter is where water will spill onto it and get down into the blower motor area and finally ca.r
Have a Grand Am and my tips is clean out the drain holes from time to time. So that includes the doors the rocker panels the sunroof and the hood where the water runs off your window and down to the wheel wells. Big area to either leak or rust so just clean them out
yes, I had a leak from under my glove box onto the floor and then happen to get my windshield cracked and replace soon after. The guy my insurance company sent out to replace the windshield showed me all the crud that was built up when he removed a cover below the windshield beneath the hood. a straight piece of rubber seal had shifted too, and just needed to be re-attached. Worked perfectly. no more leak even in heavy rain. The crud enters at the bottom corners of the windshield. keep these areas clear of leaves and pine needles. 2003 Grand Prix SE owner since 2005. I had replaced the catalytic converter and the 2 of the 3 Ignition coils were arcing so I replaced all three and this thing has a lot of power for just an SE. 2003 was the last W-body a believe.
I just pulled out a 1998 pontiac grand prix out off my brother's property that has been sitting outside for 3 or 4 years. The previous owner (my bros friend) are horrible with their cars, but i figured if its free, ill get it running. New radiator, thermostat, water pump, motor mount on bottom it runs, but having a cylinder 4 misfire. Gonna check on that next
Thanks for the info. Just bought a 98 GTP for $1000. 256,000 miles. And drove it from NC to NJ. And i have ALL the service records. Needs minor work. Mainly motor mounts.
I love my 04 grand prix gtp, she screams so loud!!!!! muffler delete 2 stage tune, bigger injectors, to the wheel 386hp, love the channel bro keep it up🤝🏾💯
i work at Autozone and it said you lived in NC, if so what part? i would be happy to meet up with you and talk to you about my 2002 Pontiac Grand prix GT and i could get you discounts any time you’d need it
I recently picked up a cherry 00 GTP. Previous owner built the transmission too. I did the intake gaskets & transmission fluid day 1. I feel these transmission get a bad rep because people don't take care of them & do not use DEX3. In 20 years of always owning a 3800 i've only had 1 trans failure but have always used dex 3 not dex 6 in the older models.
maintenance is an issue, the other is that they just don't hold much more power than stock. if you get much over 300hp you will break them pretty easy.
Yea so those rear strut towers I've got a couple that need repair is there a simple brace kit I can install from inside the trunk to go over the rusted through spots around the top of the strut
My spoiler leaks. I don't have any seal on the nuts. I'll have to try the RTV sealant. You should also check the rubber hose coming off the sunroof for water to drain. I've had one that was dry rotted and leaked water.
I just bought a 2003 GT with 122000 miles for $700. Only thing wrong was wheel bearings. I had to replace all of them. Changed all fluids, thing runs great! Really fun car to drive. Gonna try to get ten years out of her. Great video!
Just bought a 01 regal last week,83k mileage. I'm good on all these but no high beams, fuses good. looks like I'm changing the multi function turn indicator. good video, will keep eyes out on those.
Awesome video Brother!! I just recently picked up a 97 grad prix gt 3800. 130k mi. I am having a tire pressure light (there's only one)on the dash that won't go off. To your knowledge, does my car have tps sensors??? Talked to a guy at Firestone and he said they did not. Got any advice for me ?? I would appreciate it.
If you are replacing control arm bushings, consider these. I got the upgraded Moog bushings on 2 of my GP's and I really like them www.grandprixforums.com/brakes-suspension-chassis/95611-massive-inprovement-in-front-end-feel-for-50-a.html?highlight=control+bushings
We have a ‘99 GTP. We love it. Great car, fast as hell. We keep it well maintained and fix everything that needs tending to. Keep the oil clean and it’ll treat you good. Crummy that the recall took away the beauty cover on the valve head.
I have a W platform/body 1995 grand prix / took the craddle down with engine. changed transmission seal and put in new head gaskets lower and upper intake . I'm raising the cradle and engine up , to line up steering shaft do i center the steering wheel and then center the tie rods then reach in, wait a minute, how do i jack, & line the steering ujoint shaft up . from above or below I don't have a garage type hoist , just cherry picker / floor jack and have the rear tires sitting on the laid down front tires. and jack stands in the front . Thks for doing video on G.M. w body. you got the 6 th gen grand prix 1997-200? 2003 maybe I like W body video's as I picked one to use to learn front wheel drive repair.
@@SalemDoyle the brake boster covers it up and I had to do it all by feel, it wasn't working with the boot on so left it off .95 grand prix 3100 sub frame back bolted up steers with out binding normal but I'm going to have to slit the boot and make an over lap and glue it maybe with shoe repair glue oe equivilant. found out the craddle bolts don't give you much extra to get started so it has to be butted up there with the tranny jack real firm to get them started with the threads, and my tapppered bar to line them up didn't do the threads any good but still threaded. Now that I done one with the ujoint I see next one up is a pt cruiser and according to video's replacing the rack & pinion steering unit there's no ujoint," but", then they use a drive in pin . I took for ever to get my first sub frame up and steerig line up glad that's behind me I did find i put the front two bolt's in the craddle first to keep the steering ujoint spaced right don't think it hurt the cradle rubber mount as ir would still lower in back to whay i needed to start steering shft over one another and had to swith to a tranny jack, from my heavy 4 wheel cart I slide the engine under the car on MY istake was not putting the car back on jack stands, as I still had the cherry picker hooked to the dog bones raditor brace. and those combo's were working as my heavy cart was to hard to move around under the craddle and engine as it did't have all 4 swivals. never will I take this long again and skin up my hand reacin for ever under the brake boster but had to learn I guess the hard way
I purchased an '08 GP new. Changed oil (full synthetic) every 3500k miles. Flushed tranny every 50k miles. 15 yrs later, and 230k miles both run like new. 75% of the rest of the car, upgraded. Compatible Japanese cars only replaced 1/3 of the components. I will not waste the same time and effort on another GM product except the trucks, not SUVs. GM seems to make the effort to make their trucks more reliable.
Seems like my Impala is fine in all but the transmission. It was fine when I got it, but then I got the fluid changed without getting it flushed or a new filter installed. Now it bucks under acceleration from a complete stop sometimes and has rough shifts. Hopefully the stuff I’m doing next week will fix it. $1000 car is a good car regardless
I Want Another W Body Preferably A Grand Prix Coupe From 97-2003 GTP Or A 2004-2005 Monte Carlo Supercharged SS Both Only With A Sunroof These Cars Are Still My Favorite From GM
I just bought my second one! First one got up to 345,000 and only than was I having oil pressure issues when I was idling. Otherwise ran great for 3 years 260 to 345. Daily driving pizza delivery. Take care of yours, it may just run forever haha. My new ones only got 98K haha
Got an 02 with the 3100 238000 check engine light flashes. Did 2 transmission filters within the 10k miles I've had it. ( just because I wanted to know I had all the old guild out) I think it should last the yr.
@@SalemDoyle random misfire. It's an issue that I know the only way to solve it is to rebuild the engine and the engine don't need rebuilt about 350000 miles and I doubt the trainee's going to last that long.
I JUST BOUGHT ONE , I LOVE THE CAR, I ONLY PAID 2000.00 FOR AN 06 SUPERCHARGED, SHE RUNS GREAT BUT THE SUPERCHARGER BYPASS SOL VALVE IS BAD AND THATS THE ONLY CODE I GOT BUT THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO BRO
So that top glass on the sunroof can open on my 2003 Grand Prix GT 4 door? I know about the plastic slider that pulls back. Just wasn't aware of the glass being able to open. I didn't realize that it could. lol
I drove my car All day yesterday to work and back... Well I decide to start my car and go to the store and it wouldn't move forward or backwards... I don't understand it was just driving fine... I'm thinking it could maybe be my axles
I just bought an 05 Gt1 and haven't a clue about it other than it only has 140,000 miles and I paid $1000. It's in really good shape and the guy I bought it from fixed the front passenger window and bought me the window regulator assembly for the rear passenger window. So I think im vey pleased. The tracking system says it needs serviced and I think the seller said it's a sensor. What ever is wrong I know he will help me fix. My question for you tho is, the engine is missing its "cover". The top piece over three engine that says either series II OR series III. Is that a big deal or not so much? Ive owned a few late 80s crown vic's and a few early 90s escort wagons with an early 90s grand am in between. Im a 42 year old woman that don't know very much about cars but I do purchase a Chilton's manual for EVERY car I buy so I can figure out what's going on and how to fix. I can usually do my own tune ups and front brakes but this 05 GP seems like it's going to be an entirely new experience. I really wanna keep it nice and maybe even make it ALOT nicer. I really appreciate the videos you've posted And look forward to seeing more. Im starting with something easy tho. I noticed this a.m. that that cover thingy is missing from the engine. I looked for a supercharger oil fill hole to see if it is a series 2 or 3. I see no hole so I assume series 2.
That cover was removed as part of a recall. You can get them from junk yards if you want but its perfectly ok not to run one if you dont want to. All of the 04 + cars are series 3. But there is a supercharged and a non supercharged version. With yours being an 05 gt. It should be non supercharged.
@@SalemDoyle I know I can simply look this up but maybe you know a quick, easy way to explain. What is the difference between the supercharged and non-supercharged? Or is it just something that I need to read for myself and learn. Hell, you might have a video posted about it. I'll look thru your content before I bother ya anymore. Thanks, hon!
(Grand Prix) Stock Cat Converter will block. Turn signal/cruise/hazard Stock will need to be replaced-hazards will eventually stay on. Shift interlock will need to be fixed/replaced(bad design, rips the wires). Key will get stuck in ignition-guaranteed it will. Rockers will disintegrate. Other than that.... nice car.
Mine doesn’t drain/leak, check. Spoiler doesn’t leak, check, gaskets are good, check. Control arm a wearing I do need a alignment. Transmission condition is great, check.
I hear that. I used to be nostalgic for the 80s but now that they're so far back, I'll take the 90s-2000s any day. Bought an 05 Impala SS back in 2009 and still have it. That old 4t65e is still going at 126,000 miles and now with a 3" DP and 3.5 pulley plus all the other crap. Other than a little rust behind the right side rocker (parked it in the winter the past 5 years (MIchigan)it's still in decent shape. No doubt these cars arent as bad as people make them out to be. For a FWD, it's been low maint and a good car.
I've had the sunroof drain issue in my Caddy. Wish I would have blown them out with air long before I did. Ended up getting pissed and breaking my headliner during a downpour when I was already having a bad day.
Just bought a 2000 Regal GS with 160k. Newly rebuilt supercharger (ported and polished), larger throttle body, headers, phenolic spacer, slightly smaller pulley, ZZP tune, cat and EGR delete, cooler thermostat, upgraded intake gaskets, etc. I'm not having any of these issues (only tires wearing more on outside- is that what you were talking about?) Burns tires like it burns premium fuel! Car runs great and is an even better 'sleeper' than the Pontiac (Buick 😴styling), but I'm not a fan of the auto transmission or Fwd. I just added a cone-style intake modified to be a true Cold Air Intake, and deleted muffler (massive resonator in Buick functions and sounds like a Magnaflow, so it sounds surprisingly good with just the resonator). With headers, no cat, no muffler, only resonator, it has a bit of deep V8-like burble, but still civilized and stealthy. A hint of supercharger whine with intake and pulley, but still sleep-tastic.
Thanks! It's pretty quick (probably high 12s 1/4?), but you don't really 'feel' the sensation of speed. I guess I've been spoiled with Corvettes, a modified (1000lb/ft. tq.) Duramax, sportbikes and other sleeper GMs- so maybe my expectations were too much... Even quickly accelerating from 70-140 and blowing ricers away like they're shooting backwards is perhaps too serene. The funnest part is imagining the thoughts racing in the 'victims' head, when they see this white/tan Buick (same body as 175HP Century haha!) surely driven by 'Gramps'! The shock/confusion factor is more hilarious than the actual driving experience.🙃 Now, if they only knew I paid $1600 for this reliable/comfy car with 325-350hp... 🤣
@@SalemDoyle thanks, man! I forgot to mention the previous owner even added brand new slotted and drilled brakes with carbon ceramic pads, behind light weight Raceline wheels! A bit crazy how he spent more money on perf. parts than the car is worth, but I'm just FINE with that! Now about them tires...
just found this channel. I have a 152k 02 grand prix. I know i'm good for another 50k on the engine but what should I expect for the next 3 years? I've had all struts replaced, cheaply/clunkly, and my transmission HATES cold.
I got a 2003 grand prix. It's a great car but it takes $88 to fill one tank of gas. Is there anyway for the car to run on regular gas. I'm sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but it's my first car and I really only use it to get to highschool and back
I drove a 2000 grand Prix gt for 12 years and everything you mentioned is what I needed fixed minus the sunroof, I didn't have a sunroof. Are these Grand Prix worth anything these days at all for nostalgia sake or are they scrap feed?
I had a 1996 Grand Prix Special Edition with 3.1L and a 4t60e. Did a swap from a 1997 Grand Prix GTP with a 3.8L S/C L67 and a 4t65 with the HD upgrade. This thing was hell on wheels. Had a bad bout of tire issues until the axels were trimmed. But when I did the mod back in 2003, it was out running most of the GT Mustangs. But how times have changed. I loved the car and will miss it terribly, it just wasn't the beast that I remembered it being. I own a 2008 Dodge Charger and it feels better to me. And when I rented a 2018 Ford mustang with the T/C 4cyl... it really destroyed my teenage years. That car was fast as hell and it was the base car. Want a fast fun car for under 4k... get a GP GTP... but know what you are getting. Parts aren't made anymore and the smallest of issues could break the bank...
I can definitely vouch for the 60 degree V6 models having lower intake manifold gasket leaks. As for the spoiler, I fixed mine with fiber washers on both sides of the trunk. If you get them by the pack and not at an auto parts store, they are super cheap!
Salem-quick question 01 gtp, rear engine mount was rocky/ LOOSE/ FAILED-- had it replaced and the steering column u joint broke - where to get good parts and does subframe cradle need to come down and was it the engine mount that that caused this or did control arm bushing and front suspension fail and contribute- to this? What should be fixed at this point and does it need a new steering column with the joint or new rack. I brought in for service because the steering wheel was binding.. I love the car and body is clean and it runs like top but has 141k and was one owner car- Any advice for this and future parts.... Thanks for posting by the way, it has been a life saver for for supercharger spleen gears....
Sounds like it probably needs the part of the shaft between the inside and the rack. Should be able to get one from gm or a junk yard. Thats probably why your steering was binding
I really like the grand prix they grew on me when I seen them on a nice set of cobra style wheels, I kinda want to buy one for a daily around town car, any thoughts?
Just bought an 01 Grand Prix yesterday glad I came across this video thank you so much for posting it I'm gonna check it all out tomorrow *

I heard it could be a sensor that went bad I just read a article on that issue
Can you share please about how to change /top up the supercharger oil?
Garden hose seals under the spoiler fixes the trunk leak usually. Dexron 6 is a good upgrade for the trans with a filter change. 😉
I have a 2002 grand prix se 3100 still runs like a charm, I took best care of it. i see it a decent car to me. I enjoyed the video.
I agree. If you baby it, and keep up on the frequent maintainence, they are beautiful cars which are really fun ti drive. They are great cars for modding, and the 3800 is pretty novice friendly.
Absolutely.
Great video, very informative. Also I'd like to add rear rocker rust if the car is from the north.
Yes, that too.
Good video bro I want to start stockpiling the motors and transmissions if I can get a big enough yard
Looking at a 99 Grand Prix, thank you SO much!!
Nice, my 05 has been pretty good to me so far too.
I have a 2002 GTP 40th anniversary still going strong with 244,500 miles on it. Out of the 5 thing u listed I only had the lower intake problem. I love this car, to bad they don't make Pontiacs anymore
Sounds like you have a good one, and i agree, i think pontiac was one of gm's best brands
Thus makes me happy
Just got a 07 gtp with 222,000. First gear is slipping. Prolly will have transmission rebuilt soon. But i drained and refilled the supercharger oil and now only use 93 for gas. Runs so much better now.
268 miles on mine ,03 gt, still going strong. These are fantastic cars.your list is spot on.plus rocker and towers.
Yes, they are tanks
Thanks for the info. Just bought a red 97 GTP with no tranny motion. Just got a used one with 102k which is going In this week. Then new rotors, break pads, new fuel, spark plugs, wires, and tires. Definitely fun cars
Nice. Good luck with the project!
Sounds like my 99
Nice work! I literally know NOTHING about this, so it was probably even more informative for me!! Keep up the great content!
Another thing to look for when buying one is ignition and electrical issues most people scrap them when they turn the heat or other accessories on and lose their headlights and computer or the obd port doesn't work it's just a $30 ignition switch and a 10 minute fix
True
Just bought a 03 grand prix... good stuff to know especially if its gonna be a dedicated drag sleeper
I live in Michigan and mine was spraying so much trans fluid from the trans cooler lines so bad it'll never rust! 😂🤣
I just got an 06 grand prix, its the first car ive ever had and i love it!
Nice
Got one about a month ago its great I've never really had a reliable vehicle but this things been on 400 mile trips and its been fine
Really helpful info. Much appreciated. I've had the 2000 GTP and the 05 GT. They do need to be looked after carefully.
Thanks for watching!
@@SalemDoyle I wish I had you here to check out my 98 gtp and help me fix it up put bass in it
I currently have 3 w bodies 00 ls monty w/425000 miles on the original 3.4 but 2nd 4t65, 04 ss sc monty- thats my modder, and an 04 grand prix gt.
When i fill it up all the way, 17 gallons, the gauge shows less than and the obd scanner tool I use shows 87% full.. sometimes that number changes.. up and down.. sometimes its accurate to 100%
2008 GP with the v6 3.8l.. nothing special.
320K.. New radiator.. water pump.. alt.. crankshaft pully and seal
Power Steering pump has a mild whine to it.. even tho it has plenty of fluid it it.
replaced accel pedal because of lean mode issue.. didn't solve..
That's all fairly easily fixed also, most of the major stuff in these cars holds up pretty good
Thank YOU! ! ! ! :-)
1:57 I see and feel what you mean.
4:08 You have to Love your car to one one of these!
4:24 Awsome!
I had a 97 gtp. Wish it didn't rust out on me. I love the 97-03 body style grand prix's
My rear shock towers are starting to get crunchy. I tried grinding it down and using rust encapsulator to help
What's difference between the 03-04? Im about to buy an 04. Didn't realize it changed from 03-04.
I'm getting ready to roll over at 250k on my 02 . Hopfully a handful more to come
Just got one 3 days ago, I like it so far. Very useful information boss man
Thanks
Sounds nice. I have videos on some of that stuff, but i make grand prix stuff all the time. Thanks for watching!
Though it's been a while, this might be your water leak problem! ua-cam.com/video/CJ4TTUqI-w4/v-deo.html
Big area to either leak or rust so just clean them out
Very good tip. Especially if you park inder trees like me.
yes, I had a leak from under my glove box onto the floor and then happen to get my windshield cracked and replace soon after.
W bodys were produced in the 04+generation also, just slightly changed
@@SalemDoyle good to know, thanks.
Nice
I had a 2003 pontiac Grand Prix. Great reliable car. I did get a leak in the sun roof but I just put silicone to stop the leak.
Thanks for the info. Just bought a 98 GTP for $1000. 256,000 miles. And drove it from NC to NJ. And i have ALL the service records. Needs minor work. Mainly motor mounts.

I live between winston salem and statesville area
I recently picked up a cherry 00 GTP. Previous owner built the transmission too. I did the intake gaskets & transmission fluid day 1. I feel these transmission get a bad rep because people don't take care of them & do not use DEX3. In 20 years of always owning a 3800 i've only had 1 trans failure but have always used dex 3 not dex 6 in the older models.
maintenance is an issue, the other is that they just don't hold much more power than stock. if you get much over 300hp you will break them pretty easy.
How many miles in 20 years tho?
And was it new when you bought it 20 years ago?
@@thisguyfromyoutubesaid1537 I've had 1 failure and 1 get wore out. I've owned too many to count. No never bought one new.
I bought an 00' GTP that needs some work but stole on the low. Got that rocking sound in the supercharger, so thank you!
Yea so those rear strut towers I've got a couple that need repair is there a simple brace kit I can install from inside the trunk to go over the rusted through spots around the top of the strut
Not that i am aware of, just weld in patch panels
Rear strut towers and front and rockers ...cheers

My spoiler leaks. I don't have any seal on the nuts. I'll have to try the RTV sealant. You should also check the rubber hose coming off the sunroof for water to drain. I've had one that was dry rotted and leaked water.
Good point
I just bought a 2003 GT with 122000 miles for $700. Only thing wrong was wheel bearings. I had to replace all of them. Changed all fluids, thing runs great! Really fun car to drive. Gonna try to get ten years out of her. Great video!

Bought an 03 Impala LS with the 3.8 2 months ago so this will be interesting lol
Seems like my Impala is fine in all but the transmission. It was fine when I got it, but then I got the fluid changed without getting it flushed or a new filter installed.

(Grand Prix) Stock Cat Converter will block. Turn signal/cruise/hazard Stock will need to

Sounds awesome. That car has deff. Been taken care of. Sounds quick too.
@@jeladsnikpoh1289 you got an awesome deal
@@SalemDoyle thanks, man! I forgot to mention the previous owner even added brand new slotted and drilled brakes with carbon ceramic pads, behind light weight Raceline wheels! A bit crazy how he spent more money on perf. parts than the car is worth, but I'm just FINE with that! Now about them tires...
@@jeladsnikpoh1289 sounds like one of my builds. $100 car, $10k parts.. lol
just found this channel. I have a 152k 02 grand prix. I know i'm good for another 50k on the engine but what should I expect for the next 3 years? I've had all struts replaced, cheaply/clunkly, and my transmission HATES cold.
I would deff. Plan to do the trans then. Other than that probably nothing major. My project car has 230k and still kicking
Also subframe rust and subframe bushings
I had to replace the subframe on my 98 Riviera cracked and rusted out
Don't forget the cheap crappy plastic coolant elbows that need to replaced w metal ones..
I got a 2003 grand prix. It's a great car but it takes $88 to fill one tank of gas. Is there anyway for the car to run on regular gas. I'm sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but it's my first car and I really only use it to get to highschool and back
If you stay out of boost yeah
My mileage and trip quit working. All the other lights and gauges work. Is there a gear in the back of the cluster that just be replaced?
I drove a 2000 grand Prix gt for 12 years and everything you mentioned is what I needed fixed minus the sunroof, I didn't have a sunroof. Are these Grand Prix worth anything these days at all for nostalgia sake or are they scrap feed?
They are worth something to some of us, but they dont bring much in terms of resale
what the best thing to use when cleaning out the weep holes for the sunroof
Compressed air
I replaced the coupler in the supercharger snout. It sounded like bolts rattling in a can
my 99 had that problem when i got it
I had a 1996 Grand Prix Special Edition with 3.1L and a 4t60e.
There are still a lot of parts around though, and they are so cheap now that it makes them easy to get into.
I can definitely vouch for the 60 degree V6 models having lower intake manifold gasket leaks.
As for the spoiler, I fixed mine with fiber washers on both sides of the trunk. If you get them by the pack and not at an auto parts store, they are super cheap!
i actually need to remove mine to clean under it. also headed to the junk yard today to snag a lot of parts for my car. assuming they match.
One great thing about these cars is how many cars they share parts with in the GM line
I remember the first time I cleaned under the spoiler... Ew.
Yeah, parts availability and pricing is very forgiving on these.
these are 90 degree engines
Thanks for your good advices Sir, we keep in touch. M.Kourdellah Naoufel.
on mine i couldnt find the rear drains by the rear wheels
Lower intake gaskets were the problem I had.
+Scott Ketchum very common on these.
@@SalemDoyle thanks man, found a shaft with joint. Does craddle frame need to come down for this?
@@scottpeterson4873 a little
I really like the grand prix they grew on me when I seen them on a nice set of cobra style wheels, I kinda want to buy one for a daily around town car, any thoughts?
I daily a regal and a grand prix right now. Works out hreat
