When I was small and occasionally even now, I find it very satisfying to smush milk chocolate M&M’s between my thumb and index finger before eating them. I deliberately let the chocolate warm up a just a tad bit by say for example, leaving an unopened bag in my pocket for a minute or two… There’s just something about the compression and rupturing of the candy shell that is satisfying in much the same way people find it satisfying to pop bubble wrap…

You should see if the chocolate in M&M’s hardens back up. And that might be the point of military shipment. It melts but stays in cased in the sugar shell to later be hardened after shipment. As if nothing happened in the bag, unlike their chocolate bar counterparts.

Matpat,I would actually like to say a food theory idea I had! How exactly does certain colors of food, also effect the taste of foods? I feel like it's a way to help understand the psychology behind how color effect taste, even when not flavored.
Ohhh yeah, like how blue makes it look less appetizing, hence why blue glasses used to be a diet fad, cause it made the food look less appealing. Meanwhile, warm colors like red are more appetizing, hence why a lot of food related businesses use red or warm colors (KFC, Burger King, McDonald’s, you name it. The more blue ones are grocery stores or ice cream places).
@@monroerobbins7551 exactly,it also helps understand why certain shells with candies, let's take the m&m's for example (I actually don't know if they're flavored, but let's go with they're not) that it makes the red colors have a different taste then the green colors,or that the yellow tastes somewhat let appetizing then blue. The psychological reason behind certain brands using colors and other textures would help explain why some food is seen much more appealing when it's colors are different, though the food alone would be something seen as gross.
I absolutely adore the fact that the goal of food theory, game theory, etc is to ruin childhoods in the most unnecessary yet awesome scientific way possible. lol
I don't remember ever hearing "the milk chocolate..." part before, I just always took it to mean the chocolate doesn't get all over your hand, but once you bite it, it would be all creamy and melty
The extended slogan definitely uses the word "chocolate" as the entire snack. A "box of chocolates" doesn't just refer to the solid mix of cocoa and sugar, it's any filling and coating too.
I can feel Austin in this episode Also the, "...meters times K..." physically hurts me as a former physics and chemistry student who studied this stuff. It's Watts per meter - Kelvin!

That’s because you didn’t grow up with it. Multiple generations have passed, I’m sure it was extremely popular around the WWII era where they were exclusively shipped to soldiers
still cool that they bothered to find a way to keep it from turning into a giant pile of sticky gross mess while being shipped back in the day. And no where near as weird as the M&M mascot monsters.
Matpat, I think you should reach out to Linda Bartoshuk. She’s one of the most phenomenal taste scientists out there, and she might be able to greatly benefit you when it comes to the science in your videos, especially behind taste. She has some really good evidence on some really cool taste stuff, that’s super interesting. Since some philosophers greatly messed up the ideas around taste, and she has some super out there theories (she’s currently writing a book about it). I would love to see this, and I’m sure most of your viewers would too, so just consider it.
@@morrigankasa570 I think that adds to the video's script though. Food Theory has done a bunch of episodes on food classification (hot dogs = sandwiches, is Subway Tuna actually Tuna, etc.) and I think it would be fun to tackle both the questioin of "what is a potato chip" as well as "why use tubes to transport chips"
I always assumed the slogan implies that you will be eating them so fast that they won't have the chance to melt in your hand. That just doesn't have quite the ring to it. Lol
"Leaves a mess in your mouth, but not your hand." I am also loving the idea of Mat being the next Jeopardy host, I feel as though that would be a revolutionary moment for everyone who watches him.
I've already done this before when I was a kid living in a restaurant. I still remember that it takes about 250 seconds for the M&Ms to become super squishy.
To be totally fair, this is generally taking the slogan a bit too literally. The candies accomplish their task of not melting "in" your hand by simply not covering your hand in chocolate while you're trying to eat them. it doesn't mater that the chocolate is already melted inside the shell, it's meant to keep that chocolate from melting "onto" anything other than the inside of your mouth. which is referring to the phrase of "melting onto" something. regardless of if the chocolate is already molten by the time it gets to your mouth, the only place the chocolate is actually being released from it's candy shell, is in your mouth. that's why it was successful as a candy for sending to troops, because open bars of chocolate became a nightmarish mess to handle, but the M&Ms were still solid pieces of candy. even if they were just a little softer than usual.
I totally agree, in my eyes the slogan still definitely stands up, since at no point does the chocolate get to your hands and coats them, it coats your mouth and taste buds - which is exactly what the slogan is trying to accomplish 🤷🏻♂️ So in my opinion this theory doesn’t really hold any water… (unlike the shells holding in the chocolate! Ayyyyy 😂)
THANK YOU!!!! This is exactly what was irking me off about this theory. Because sure from an unnecessarily over analytical and scientific standpoint, the M&M slogan is wrong about the chocolate melting in your mouth and not your hand. But from a common sense standpoint the slogan is fine because no one, literally absolutely no one in their right fucking mind is going to intentionally hold a bunch of m&m in their hand for upwards of four minutes.
In Canada, we have similar candy coated chocolates called Smarties (the USA has a different candy with the same name) Smarties have slightly less milk chocolate and a slightly thicker candy layer. I wonder if they'd last better.
I can safely say they wouldn't, had them all the time as a kid and they'd often be melted inside the cardboard tube they came in if I'd left them in my pocket for too long. We've got both Smarties and M&M's here in the UK, for me personally Smarties taste nicer but M&M's don't cause as much mess when they melt. :D

the candy coating allows it to retain its shape when it cools down again, so its still great to send over seas to the military. as long as it is kept dry, and is brought back down to room temperature. Its melt resistant, well enough to provide its function.

kudos to whoever creates your graphics. Simply amazing! “The milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not _on_ your hands.” is our suggested edit for the slogan based upon your research results.
You've actually convinced me that the slogan isn't as false as I thought it was. I've always just thought of the reaction that leaves the coloring on your hand as being a result of melting, but, as you've shown here, that was wrong. Focusing on the milk chocolate, though, the slogan rings absolutely true. The chocolate isn't melting in your hand because the chocolate isn't IN your hand. It is in the candy coating. You held it for 4 minutes and that coating wasn't even close to dissolving enough to let the chocolate melt into your hand. In your mouth, however, the candy coating will dissolve fast enough that the chocolate will indeed melt in your actual mouth. Conclusion: Mars nailed that slogan.
@@alalalala57 yeah, I feel like the only way you can really enjoy M&Ms is stuff them in the freezer for a bit, let them thaw for like 5 minutes (maybe even less) and scarf them down like a starving coyote before they get back to room temperature. I wish there was a more versatile chocolate candy

It’s about how you interpret the slogan. It could mean the chocolate won’t melt in or “into” your hand thus making a mess. So I doubt you will be winning any false advertising lawsuits.
he's not trying to win any false advertising lawsuits.....it's just a video about if the chocolate melts in your hand or the shell....sounds to me like you take things too seriously
When I was a kid, I remember eating a bunch of M&Ms one night and my dad pointed out that I was so messy, I was able to get chocolate around my mouth from eating M&Ms. As a kid, I was proud of that. As an adult, I realize that it was probably just from saliva. 🤷
While the slogan is false, it's actually a pretty ingenious way to keep the chocolate intact for the military. The problem with it melting was that it would lose its structural integrity, but M&Ms' sugar coating keeps the shape even when the chocolate is completely melted.
"It's not liquid, but it certainly is melted." Melted: adjective - having become liquefied by heating. I don't know, not liquid? Sounds like not melted to me.
Well liquid just means the molecules can slide past each other, which I say they did pretty well just then, so maybe it *is* a liquid just a very viscous one
@@ultimus616 A liquid is defined as a material that deforms continuously under shear stress. Mat applied a bit of a normal stress to the M&M's, but he also seemed to slide a few of them (adding shear). The chocolate did not deform continuously, and is thus not a liquid. More accurately, if he were to raise the plate 180 degrees (vertical orientation), the M&M's would also not deform continuously under gravitational shear. If you had a drop of oil, it would "slide down" (continuous deformation) [actually it leaves material behind... the droplet deforms continuously under gravitational shear]. The M&M's would, assuming the face in contact with the plate was made fixed, not behave this way while having the state of material depicted within the video.
@@danese1636 While I'm not familiar with that exact definition, and it might help to frame it less.. pedantically.. I gather that you mean it doesn't flow like a liquid does. Regardless of explanations, you are correct, and the above comment saying that "melting" would be more correct would be my revised response here
If cheese is melted, is it a liquid? If so, then only cheese sauces count as melted cheese, and then what would you call cheese heated on a pizza that's still semi-solid?
“M&M, the less mess melting chocolate! “ Honestly their slogan is fine if you ask me. The point was it wouldn’t melt and get all over your sh*t when out in about, especially when y’all keep it in the bag. “M&M, keep it wrapped, eat a snack, it’s a non-messy snap!”
Looking at this again, I'm wondering if it's theoretically possible to hold M&Ms in your hand long enough to fully dissolve the shell. At that point, the chocolate should have long melted as well.
I wish a video like this existed, back when I was in high school; my AP Chemistry class -- which was already fun for me -- would have been a lot more fun.
When I was a kid in the summer at the pool I used to buy M and Ms during the break time at the pool, put them out on the darker tiles in the sun and wait for a few minutes until they were melted inside. I still like M and Ms most when they're mostly melted. This theory reminded me of those happy memories eating melted M and Ms! 😊
Usually though, most adults don't closed fist hold mnm's. Since they were originally marketed towards military, we can disregard the children and say that since the mnm's usually sit in the hand rather than being held all around, the area of contact is usually only the bottom. Since you've doubled the surface area of contact during the matpat holds mnm's test, you are transferring in more heat, aren't you?
I specifically don't hold M&M's for more than a few seconds because I got tired of them melting. I hate having messy hands. This is the first I've heard of their slogan but it sounds like a dumb one based on my experience.

@@lenne_langenberg and by clown, they meant whoever believed it
HMMM? the actual slogan is the milk chocolate. You are definitely BING CHLLING
I totally agree, in my eyes the slogan still definitely stands up, since at no point does the chocolate get to your hands and coats them, it coats your mouth and taste buds - which is exactly what the slogan is trying to accomplish 🤷🏻♂️
So in my opinion this theory doesn’t really hold any water… (unlike the shells holding in the chocolate! Ayyyyy 😂)
Exactly. Who cares if the inside is melted as long as the outside is intact and allows you to eat them without the chocolate getting everywhere
THANK YOU!!!! This is exactly what was irking me off about this theory.
Because sure from an unnecessarily over analytical and scientific standpoint, the M&M slogan is wrong about the chocolate melting in your mouth and not your hand.
But from a common sense standpoint the slogan is fine because no one, literally absolutely no one in their right fucking mind is going to intentionally hold a bunch of m&m in their hand for upwards of four minutes.

kudos to whoever creates your graphics. Simply amazing! “The milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not _on_ your hands.” is our suggested edit for the slogan based upon your research results.
How about: "The milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hand unless you hold it clenched in your fist for more than 4 minutes."

"It's not liquid, but it certainly is melted."
Melted: adjective - having become liquefied by heating.
I don't know, not liquid? Sounds like not melted to me.
Should be melting instead of melted, then
Well liquid just means the molecules can slide past each other, which I say they did pretty well just then, so maybe it *is* a liquid just a very viscous one
