  • Since I have a old video that explains about subnetting "IP Addressing & Subnetting" in the channel, I wanted to update the subnetting part and give you guys a quick review with a modern feel.
    You can watch the old and the new videos to get a better understanding of this.

    Hello Sir, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for teaching me how to subnet. I looked at numerous of videos and it seemed like all of these instructors that was teaching subnetting on youtube was making it confusing for me.     His class B showed a /21 (255.255.224.0 - increments of 8) but midway he switches over to a 255.255.240.0 which is /20, working with increments of 16. I do not know how he missed that.

      he did notice something was wrong... but continued. the core explanation still works but he should redo this problem.

      class B = /16 or 255.255. or 11111111.11111111 /21 = 16 + 5 or 11111 network side counts Left to Right 256-1, 128-1 ,64-1, 32-1 or 224 subnet or /20
      for /21 the next bit borrowed = 16 so the subnet becomes 224 + 16 = 240

    Really enjoyed this and your old video on subnetting. Should mention though that on the class B example, you started with a /21 and finished with a /20 somehow. Am I missing something? Thank you for the seed you are sowing into so many lives.

    I can subnet when I write it all out, but trying to do it in my head beyond 3 subnets seems to be beyond my ancient brain ;)
    Serious props to anyone who can do this in their head under pressure. We have a set time to do the Cisco practical exam, and I'm eternally grateful that my income doesn't depend on my ability to spit out subnets given 'x' hosts on a given network : I find myself second-guessing even the simplest arithmetic.

    You moved your line right at around 19 minutes and 20 seconds changing your increments. Which increment is right? I imagine it is 8 before you changed it back to 16.

    Thanks man, Best subnetting videos i have seen. Totally get it using the methods he uses for doing the math. I get it better without using the formula and working it all out and seeing it. Now that I can picture in my head the way the numbers move, the patterns etc. Then the formula makes sense.

      The Networking Doctors I was sitting in college and was like "Huh? What? Where? WHY?" and didn't get it but as soon as I watched your video twice and did some calculation (if you can even call it calculation) I felt like cheating because it was sooo easy! :D I really, really appreciate the work you've put into it!

    thanks pal, for any tutorial video that i have been searched for ip subneting on youtube this was the best clear and well explanation method .It help me much, for my respect I will give you +1 like and subscribe, again thanks and( btw on 19:27) you accidentally removed the vertical line than by mistake you shifting it (from8 to 16) left but never mind I know it was technical mistake and the cool is I still understand what you talking on. keep doing this pal you help a lot people awesome

    LAZ, I am asking this for my understanding, I know I could be wrong here but you want us to ask questions and gain understanding. On the class B example, I think you moved your line from 5 bits on to 4 bits on making it ultimately a /20. Because based on /21 wouldn't it have incremented by 8 instead of 16. I am asking for my understanding and if I need a digital slap, I am OK with that. Thank you. By the way, I am going to do your updated CCNA course once I get home. Currently, I am re-reading your book, The only IP Book You Will Ever Need! Subnet masking is where I have to keep practicing and get that clear.

    I can not remember where I've already seen this man, but this way of explaining, that tired and drunk face is familiar to me.

      @@thenetworkingdoctors It worked out! The test did not have much subnetting but will be a whole lot of it upcoming practical.. I still need a little more practise before I see the subnet solutions on given assignments, making out the Right CIDR to hosts needed etc.

      Hey Warren....I'll take it as a compliment.
      Learning isn't easy for most people...but teaching is also hard.
      I've applied my past experiences, being in the military, and used it to train people.
      It seems to be working so far.

    and 192.168.1.234 is in the same network?
    by using class B 255.255.0.0?

    how can you borrow 4 bits from the network side and have a /21? if 2^4=16 to give an increment of "16," it should be /20 (8+8+1111) for the 172.16.0.0. verify that please

    Question for anyone . For the ranges you have 192.168.100.32. 33-62 are usable and 63 is the broadcast where does 192.16.100.1-31 fit at? Wouldn't that be the first network and host?

    what exactly happens when a range is full from hosts on the network....is it the next host that attempts to connect..say into a wifi network simply cannot connect? Is there something tells them they are out of the range ?

    Hi There. I dont understand this. My private IP 4 is 10.204.1.76 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0..i thought ip 10.204.1.76 is class A. how is my subnet mask 255.255.255.0 that should be class C? Please give me some help on this...

    why sometimes the start of counting number changes? 1,2,4,8,16... and when you count host it start with 2,4,8,16...?

    I work on school project where I have 150 consultants that need to be able to connect to server headquaters. Does that mean that they need to have IP that is within same subnet as those servers or is it enough that they are within same network?

    Thank you! It really helps me lot, but i have a question. I'm a bit confusing. for example Network ID of 195.187.86.0 and the Subnets Required is 44. What is the Subnet mask, 1st available host address of SN1 and max # of host/subnet. Can you please make a simple solution for this. Thank you very much!

      If I understand it correctly: subnet mask is /30 (255.255.255.252) - first available host in subnet 1 is 195.187.86.1 - and the max number of usable hosts per subnet is 2.

    Hi thanks for helping me learn subnetting. I have question: You want to design a subnet mask for 172.29.00 for example. you want 30 subnets with up to 1900 host. what subnet do you use? following what you have said. i can use 255.255.252.0 which gives me 64 subnets and 2048 hosts or 255.255.248.0 which give me 32 sub and 4096 host. firstly am i correct and secondly and if yes which one do you use? are the subnets more important that the host in this questions? looking at the question do we count the host first and what ever the host are or the other way around.
    Again thank you so much for making this easy!!!! and yes your biceps do get in the way lol

    Hi man following you around going up the ladder in subnetting, however if anyone can help me with the increments for instance 10.10.0.0 when we say increments just as an example 0-254 does it mean 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 until 254 or am missing something if anyone could point me to video or something (incrementing more than one octet i.e. class B) to refer to this video by the networking doctors "how to increment the "whats in-between" i understand everything else fine. all suggestions are welcome. thanks again.

    2 to the power of n bits minus 2 is for the hosts, not the network. so, why would you subtract 2 from the 8 networks in the first example??

    What I wanna know is simple.
    192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.255 on 255.255.0.0 that have 65534 available IP and -1 because of default ip of router 192.168.0.1.
    Gets my question sir?

    Someone should explain to this gentleman the logic behind the undo function, so he doesn't have to erase lines manually when he screws up :) Otherwise thanks for the lecture.
