Thank you. I have seen maybe a half dozen ways to do subnetting and the way you showed it actually clicked for me. Thank you!! Yours was the first that I could translate to the next question during my studies and figure it out correctly. I needed to know the why and most were using magic number charts, etc.. but didn't go into full detail of WHY. I have to know why to do the how.

Bless you Russell. I have been trying to master this for months and no other youtube video nor written tutorial nor my classwork/resources have made me understand it the way you have. The addresses where another octet other than the last one is used for subnetting is something most resources fail to explain. Many thanks from california.

I've watched dozens of subnet masking videos on the net, and this is the only one that ever made sense. Russelll is great. I realize that not all of us learn the same way, and comprehending an instructor is an individual kind of thing, but this video worked for me. I still need practice and to watch it a few more times. But I love how Russell articulates his visual diagrams and really takes things in steps and examples at each level. I love the fact that he doesn't assume.
I think it's best to download the video with something like youtube saver for Firefox and watch it on a laptop when you're out at a park relaxed, maybe having a cigar. This was a priceless video. I would actually like to get this video in HD.
Would love to take an actual class with this instructor. I live in CA, not sure where he teaches though.

well I knew i found the best video for subnetting when he wrote down the ranges for classes of networks and showed what that means in binary. Every other resource just gave a range of numbers. From there it was just 30 minutes of all these concepts clicking. Thanks for the great video. P.S i kind of want to send you a good eraser.

This is a good alternate explanation BUT the "magic number" method is even easier to understand from an explanation point of view. This method does provide a few extra points of information about the details of how the addressing is actually working such as address classes but if we are talking about a student learning how to calculate # of nets, # of hosts, net address, broadcast address, host range, and usable addresses, best to use the "magic number" method. Once they are comfortable using "magic number", then this explanation would be a good next step to provide additional detail.
