Welcome to PROJECT SAND GECKOS (Stenodactylus sp.)! I hope you enjoy today's video, the first of the series! Sorry for the delayed upload; it's a long one! Let me know what you think, and please remember to answer today's question of the day! Thank you for watching!
I’ve kept both of these species on and off for the last 6 or 7 years and they are so fun and unique. I bred the steno stenos completely by accident,by having them in a natural setup babies just appeared. Also they the way they communicate with their tails is just one of the coolest things found in nature!
I've been watching your videos for quite a while and I have learned so much from you. I would just love to say thank you for all that you are doing for these animals and the hobby. You deserve so much more thanks than you get. Thank you for being such a kind and lovely human being and for informing everyone on the care of all of your amazing animals.
these are such pretty little geckos! i adore how inquisitive they are. and those eyes! looove. as for the QOTD, i'm on the same page as you. only for establishing captive bred populations and not for casual keepers with no intent to breed.
Gotta love seeing the underloved obscurities of the hobby get the attention they deserve! Qotd: I think that wild caught is acceptable for certain species and situations because there are some that just aren't available (one example is my dream lizard, gonocephalus chameleontanus, which is a bit difficult to breed, but if I get the opportunity I won't hesitate to buy a wild caught group to breed)
I had a small group of these lovely geckos 25 odd years ago and loved them they were always active and up to something and produced a load of baby's for me enjoy them
i'm glad you're working with and producing great content about species that are less popular but super awesome and deserve the attention! We are all learning lots from you, thanks so much
If you like stenodactylus, you should try coleonyx, specifically coleonyx brevis. They're a lot like stenos, but look and act like mini leopard geckos. I've had Squeak, my female, for a couple of years, and she's one of the best animals I've had the pleasure of working with. Also I agree 100% about wild caught animals, I only source captive bred animals to keep as pets.
I prefer Tropiocolotes steudneri for my tiny communal desert geckos, but these are a great option and it really is a shame that they aren't more popular. But I agree, wild caught is alright with the correct end goal in mind. I hope your breeding projects do well and i'll be looking forward to future the Sand Gecko updates.
They’re GORGEOUS!! Can’t wait to get to know them!!! QOTD: I don’t believe in, or will buy wild caught animals unless it’s for the reason you’re doing it, to help repopulate. If it helps the species survive then yes. If you’re just taking from the many in the wild, then no, it’s not fair to them. These lil guys are sooo fun to watch!! They’re not terrified either! (That they show) Dunno if I’ve ever seen more cute in one bin! Love the Egyptian style music while they eat, bet they felt right at home! Lol I love how they hunt and that tail wave! I’m smitten! ❤ even their poops are adorable
Thanks for watching, friend! They are so funny! Very interesting to observe. Thanks for sharing your answer! Very caring response! Thank you! I am trying my best to build a certain atmosphere with the videos and where the animals come from!
I love these critters as well as the dragons but after all the tail wagging these little buggers where doing who can’t say they are not cute as heck. Got to love them please give even more updates on them, as they say we may all need our daily dose of them tail wags. 😂Tfs these little cuties.
The wagging tails were so cute and funny! I kept pausing and going back a couple seconds to rewatch some of the awesome clips you got of the new ones drinking, the feedings, the curiosity about the tongs, and the digging. I hope that if they bury their eggs in fine sand, that they do it close enough to the side so you can see the egg through the glass.
I am getting back into the love of reptiles after keeping fish for the last 20 yrs. Currently planning and setting up a 50 gallon bio-active world for these little beautiful Stenos. Just hope I can find some next spring when it warms up enough to have them shipped or pray a local shop can find them for me. New to the reptile life so I have no connections to help...yet hahaha 😄
I actually love your mindset regarding wild caught animals, and completely agree. If there aren’t options to get CBB or even CB, the only option would be wild caught. Very excited to see how this project goes for you!
I'm currently saving up for a leopard gecko! I'm excited as this will be my first time owning a reptile! 😆 I already have a named planned for him. His name will be Toothless.
Nice, toothless was the name I was planning to give to a black night leopard gecko if I were to ever get one. Good luck finding a leopard gecko you like!
I have a communal of elegant geckos and they are thriving beautifully I actually found 2 eggs while cleaning their cage last week. So I hope yours does as well as mine have been doing
I’m with you regarding wild caught reptiles. It should only be done to further the captive breeding programme. Gorgeous additions to your collections😊 Congratulations
Ohhh GOODIE... A real video! Thank you!!! To answer your question... I agree with your assessment of wild-caught critters. Hopefully, you'll soon be providing all the Americas (is Canada an America?) with these stunning geckos! And...are the smaller group (Sand geckos?) also communal?... you just told us in the video! Sorry, I should watch the whole thing before posting questions. Thanks, Beverly
I second what folks are saying, i dont know why you dont have more subs! I always check out your channel regularly for the famous silkworm feedings, updates on Sabzi and Basil, the croc skinks, everything! I love the lil community here its great :) I also love jabba, leela, sapi, ET, Rexy ^^ I like that we get a more intimate view in the care taking and behaviors of your creatures. Makes it all feel more personal and keeps me invested on their updates!~ keep it up and i hope to sub to the patreon once the cash flow allows it :)
for the question of the day I agree with what you said about using wild caught animals to kickstart a captive breeding population, I would also add that I see no issue with occasionally bringing in more wild caught animals in the future for strict use in adding genetic diversity to the captive population(this would of course be a regulated process), many species we have lost from captivity due to lack of genetics in both the zoo and private sector of animal keeping
Oh no, these sand gecko's are so cute/beautiful looking gecko's (interesting to watch, love their tail action) that I think they just made it onto my "must own" list...lol!
I would not have the pythons I have without wild caught animals. But I 100% agree that wild caught animals need to be used for breeding. I too hope to breed so that wild collecting can be eased with certain species. Best of luck with the geckos!
QOTD: I have nothing to add to how you feel about it. I feel the exact same way! I hope you’ll be at AnimalCon again. If so, I can’t wait to see you there!🦎❤️🦎 They’re SO cute!!
Ever since you did the set up of the first sand geckos you got. I've fallen in love with them. I currently have an exoterra that I am going to make similar to yours. I'm definitely not going to get them anytime soon even if I have the enclosure set up soon. Since I'm currently working with new electric blue geckos for a breeding project of mine. But they are the next on the list when I am ready
These are beautiful! Maybe if you get any new animals you could start them off with a nice soak? That way they can get hydrated right away and quickly since they seemed super thirsty. They are all looking much better and some of their colors have gotten so much brighter. I'm guessing bc they're being cared for properly and not stressed from the shipping. So glad tour trying to get these more established in the hobby so these animals don't have to be taken from the wild as pets. I agree with you on wild-caught as well. Thanks for sharing these cuties with us. Have a great day!
I have a pair of Stenodactylus stenodactylus and pair of Stenodactylus petrii so excited to see someone finally showing them off. these geckos are amazing...the little S. Stenodactylus CHIRP
About the question of the day: My first reptile i've ever had was an wildcaught anole. I really didn't see it much, it always hided in the enclosure. This took the fun for me for a while, but now I am thinking about getting a crested gecko and giving it another try
Ive been keeping Stenodactylus Sthenodactylus for just over a year now 2.3 and have had a lot of success with breeding. I keep them on soft sand and find that they lay eggs a lot more readily where they bury them. Hope you have a lot of success with them and love your videos btw
Something I’ve seen some other keepers do is put a small rock in the water dish, which they can stand on and help them to get out. It wouldn’t be as slippy as the bottom of the plastic dish, and should help them be more comfortable with the dish.
Really cool video dude, beautiful little geckos. I agree with you about WC animals.. I don’t think they should be caught specifically for pets, but to be used to help the pet trade with CB babies.
Beautiful geckos. I definitely agree with you that wild caught animals should be going to people who have intentions to establish a solid captive bred population. The ONLY exceptions I can see are when the animal is an invasive species and taking it from the wild that way goes to help preserve a native population from being depopulated for the pet trade.
These geckos come from the area where I live. I know a researcher who studies them in their natural environment and I was also involved in research on them. These geckos are psammophilous creatures which means they live on sand dunes and need sand to live naturally. I recommend making a terrarium of sand for them and not of rocky desert soil, that way you can imitate their natural living environment and see how they live naturally.
Thank you so much for the information! Noted! Would you possibly be willing to send me the researchers info/name or contact? My business email is on my channel info page
2:46 that is a beautiful gecko. I was thinking of getting a pair of strophurus but this one's are looking nice. You and me like the exotic uncommon things than the common ones
They remind me of my rough knob tail gecko (u. milli) he is so cute and I love misting him and watching him lick the water droplets and eat mealworms. Last couple times I've tried to handle him he's thrashed and barked at me so I've been leaving him alone 😂
I agree with your stance on wild-caught 100%. I think wild caught often don’t make great pets and can contribute to population decline in the wild. Keeping demand for wild-caughts as low as possible deters irresponsible/illegal collection. As cute as these are, my casual search for them yielded only a few “field collected,” specimens. I have no plans to breed anything in the near future so if I ever get any Stenodactylus ssp, it’s going to be a while. Assuming they ever start being produced in captivity in the states.
QOTD: I agree with your opinion. It just makes more sense to have wild caught creatures to be only used as breeders. Cause unlike their parents the offspring won't have many wild tendencies like biting and such due to the nature of their upbringing.
Honestly I completely agree wholeheartedly that wild caught individuals should be used to establish that species in captivity, or to refresh genetics. Very few individuals should ever be sold as wild caught
QOTD: Only times I support wildcaught are: 1- to establish a captive population 2- to add new blood when the captive populations are still small 3- if the animal has a condition which would mean it would not survive in the wild I myself have 2 wildcaughts when it comes to reptiles, but all he others I have are captive bred
Awesome video!! I love small geckos :) I actually got a pair of the same geckos a few weeks ago! Unfortunately one of mine is very skinny and not eating well. I currently have it in a quarantine tank. I'm using paper towels for the quarantine area, should I use sand instead? Thanks for all the info!
I completely agree ref wild caught, I only agree with this in the instance a species is not established in the community and you are going to breed to help eliminate people buying wild caught by producing captive bred.
You should get a bearded dragon, I been binge-watching all your videos hoping I would come across you talking about bearded dragons, and I'm also trying to learn more about them so I'd know how to take care of them when I get one. Love your videos man
@@Reptiliatus Of course! I also have cats, so I'm used to be careful with lasers. They're indeed quite dangerous, I never let the animal "catch" it, in case the eyes are too close
Can you possibly do a care video on them? because I’m thinking about getting one(or three) and I can’t find much information on the care sadly🥲(love your videos by the way)✨
Wow, absolutely beautiful animals! Super excited to see future videos around this project. I’m just curious but, do you plan on selling offspring of these animals in the future?
question.....I know with more humid enclosures there is a variety of clean up crew that you can add to a habitat. But are there any cleanup crew for dryer enclosures like what you keep these sand geckos in ? Would be nice not to have to disturb a setup to scrounge around looking for poo.....
I agree on the wild caught take, however, my house gecko is “wild caught”. I say “wild caught” because I rescued him from my cat. He was rescued as a true baby and had been hand fed since then. I knew I couldn’t release him because he had become accustomed to being hand fed so he became my pet. I’m happy to report he is happy and healthy and living his best gecko life
I've kept a small S. Sthenodactylus colony reproducing for the past 5 years with zero problems. Maybe I just got lucky, but these have to be some of the most hardy gecko sp. out there. I'm sure some would disagree for various reasons, but from my personal experience, they will always thrive as long as they're kept hot enough and you provide a 2ish month cooling period in winter. 2 eggs every 3-4 weeks with no need to incubate unless you want to.
Well you brought up an interesting question in regards to bringing in animals from other countries to establish footholds in additional countries. I understand you're looking at this from a probably seller perspective. If you get something established where you are only a couple of other people are the sole proprietor in country X, then it works to your favor. But what if these critters get out how is that going to affect the ecology of environment X that is not the indigenous environment of these critters that are being imported. To me it's just a glorified puppy mill but with lizards. And what about genetics with such a limited pool all coming from the same genetic handful of sources are future generations going to have detrimental effects?
They're amazing!!! I can't wait for loads of stenodactylus content. I've seen em on Supreme Gecko a bit, maybe somewhere else, but you film them soo well, and so up close. Your channel is one of the best herp channels. Keep it up
If you have any qs, you should ask Wally Kerr. He's been keeping these for ages. Supreme Gecko is his channel. He streams stuff like that too, talking to other creators about gecko stuff
I agree with what you said wild caught being used for breeding only, cant wait to see more of this new project and watch them grow ❤ I'm rescuing a bearded dragon tomorrow its our first reptile ❤ any advice??
Thank you for expressing your thoughts! I appreciate your support and viewership! Congrats! I would suggest a vet visit for a wellness/fecal check to make sure everything is in order and your new friend is healthy!
I agree with bringing in wild caught but I only think it should be done once every 10 years or so to keep the gene pool (somewhat) at a low COI. Idk the question has lots of complex factors and that is my extremely simplified answer. Love your content by the way!❤
I agree 90% about wild caught animals... I leave that 10% for native species kept locally (to an extent). Many kids get into the hobby by starting off with a lizard, toad or something else found in their own yard. Also, with my kids, we love our outdoor enclosures where our turtles spend year round with far more room than a typical indoor set up and the locals deal with the weather the best. That leads into local laws--I would prefer captive bred native species but our home state of VA recently passed laws that do not even allow them... we have a few captive bred Eastern Box Turtles and a couple Eastern Painted Turtles and are grandfathered to keep them after they were registered. Unfortunately, if my Box Turtles end up being all males or even two males and one female, I have no recourse to replace a male with a female or whatever our preference is. Secondly, there are some native species that are in great numbers--here in VA, it wouldn't be acceptable for someone to keep a Wood Turtle due to low population numbers but there are no issues with someone in Florida keeping Green Anoles. But for the most part--yes, captive bread for hobbyist and only wild caught for breeding programs which will help the wild populations in the long run!

☺️🙏🏼
QOTD:
Only times I support wildcaught are:
1- to establish a captive population
2- to add new blood when the captive populations are still small
3- if the animal has a condition which would mean it would not survive in the wild
I myself have 2 wildcaughts when it comes to reptiles, but all he others I have are captive bred
Thanks for sharing some great points!
New sub, you deserve it :)
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼
These are magnificent!!
Thank you!
I’ve never seen those before, great video! How did the babies transition to your care? They were so emaciatwd when you got them 😬
Awesome geckos! They remind me of juvenile leopard geckos haha so cute
Haha
I completely agree ref wild caught, I only agree with this in the instance a species is not established in the community and you are going to breed to help eliminate people buying wild caught by producing captive bred.
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts!
You should get a bearded dragon, I been binge-watching all your videos hoping I would come across you talking about bearded dragons, and I'm also trying to learn more about them so I'd know how to take care of them when I get one. Love your videos man
When I had a leopard gecko, I was playing with her with a laser pointer. She was chasing it around trying to eat it. Good enrichement!
Be careful though! Dangerous for the eyes! Thanks for watching! ☺️
@@Reptiliatus Of course! I also have cats, so I'm used to be careful with lasers. They're indeed quite dangerous, I never let the animal "catch" it, in case the eyes are too close
Can you possibly do a care video on them? because I’m thinking about getting one(or three) and I can’t find much information on the care sadly🥲(love your videos by the way)✨
I hope to do one at some point! I don’t feel that I’ve had enough experience with them yet though! Thank you!
Wow, absolutely beautiful animals! Super excited to see future videos around this project. I’m just curious but, do you plan on selling offspring of these animals in the future?
Thank you very much! Absolutely! That’s all part of the plan!
@@Reptiliatus No problem! Glad to hear that, hopefully I’ll be able to purchase some in the future! 😄
I love how they articulate their tails and so curious about what is going on
Yes!
I agree. The establishment doesn't have to be for the pet trade, but to save endangered species as well.
Love these little guys!
Thank you, my friend! Me too!
question.....I know with more humid enclosures there is a variety of clean up crew that you can add to a habitat. But are there any cleanup crew for dryer enclosures like what you keep these sand geckos in ? Would be nice not to have to disturb a setup to scrounge around looking for poo.....
I agree with your perspective, iPrefer wild caught to just establish captive bred holdbacks and outcrossing a previously established domestic line
Thank you for sharing!
I 100% agree with your stance on wild caught animals.
Thanks!
They are so neat looking.
Thanks Chantal!
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing your experience and tips!
I’m surprised he doesn’t have more subscribers?
Slow and steady wins the race 🐢! Thank you for the compliment, though!
are these the geckos that can lift themselves up on their tiptoes to run on super hot sand? they are all sooooo cool!
Wow they r sooooo awesome!!!!! So how big as adults will both get? I want me some of those !!❤ great video I love it when u feed them
The digging gecko was sooo cute!
Those petri-eye are incredible. They both are. But the eyes of the petri-eye, yowza!
Couldn’t agree more! 👁️✨
And I'll add, I'm with you on the wc/import issue. It isn't black and white. You're doing it right.
I 100% agree with Reptiliatus
Thanks for the kind words! Appreciate you watching/commenting!
I like your jellyfish shirt, I enjoy jellyfish art!
Thank you! Cheers!
I love them! Let me know when you have babies available, I would love to have some in my reptile room.
But for the most part--yes, captive bread for hobbyist and only wild caught for breeding programs which will help the wild populations in the long run!
nice video as always
Thanks for watching and supporting! I appreciate the positive words!
I agree about the wild caught reptiles. Only for establishing.
Question? I guess you have to manually remove gecko fecal matter? No arid clean up crew…like desert version spring worm?
