    Nice video. You really researched this thoroughly before hand; especially like the stepped rebate on the frame. I know you really cleaned the mating surface where you attached the mastic tape in the roof valleys, but maybe an additional precaution would be to roughen up the surface with a light (say 120 grit) sandpaper/wet & dry to remove any surface film and paint gloss to ensure a really tight bond with the panel. But, hell what do i know, as you have done a great job with no leaks. always look forward to your videos, all the best to you both.

      Hi, glad your finding the videos useful. To be honest we have never had a fan before in any van, we don't miss it cos it's not there. We don't really suffer with condensation like others do, I think cos we are two small women. That being said, it's something I might look at changing in the future. Great work. Thanks for your explanation. Do you think it worth using the mastic on the underside of the ribs as well? Does the mastic degrade over time with exposure to weather? Do the edges need sealing?
    When you mentioned measuring what size to buy... That part I didn't follow...I'm looking for a skylight for a ford transit. Can you explain in more detail? You chose two skylights over a fan with a skylight. Why? Does this work well with cooking and day to day living? Thanks. :)

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  2 роки тому +3

      Hi jai, yes you could use sealant on the underside too, however we didn’t and have no leaks. I’m pretty sure that given a long period of time it will all degrade and will need re sealing. We are 2 years later now and have no problems yet. We chose two skylights for light, and so we could see the stars above our bed, I think a fan would be useful though and we may add one in the future. Thanks so much for watching 😀😀

  • @abogaard

    thanks for sharing :) for the finish on the top, the mastic/butyl tape is visible? I am debating whether or not to caulk around the outside of the rooflight including the roof grooves that we sealed with the butyl tape. Is it a good idea to seal in the butyl tape using the same adhesive/caulk we used to adhere the skylight to the van?
    I also think its worth noting that your install is the only one of three I've watched in which you've actually bonded it to the van! I watched a few others who just butyl-taped the entire rim, and then glued to the tape, but not the van.

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Andrew. Yeh the mastic tape is on show, although with the way are skylights are you can only see the back edge. The finish actually looks OK but I will say that lots of tiny debris will stick to the mastic tape!
      I think some people go for bonding to the van and some don't. If it's bonded to the van I feel you will get a better fixing and less chance of leaks, however, if you ever need to remove it then it will certainly be a faff! Most windows are bonded straight to the van, a skylight is the same I guess, just on the roof lol!
      Thank you so much for watching 😁👍

    Hi…great video, very informative. I’ve just followed your method to refit 2 existing roof lights in our Campervan, which is the same as yours. My question is regarding the mastic sealant strip - does it ‘go-off’? I fitted ours over the very hot weekend just gone and checking today, it’s still as tacky as was when I installed it. I expected the strip to harden. Also, did you use any Sikaflex on the outside in addition to the sealant strip or was the sealant strip on its own enough to seal it watertight? Thanks in anticipation, best Gwyn

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there, the strip never seems to set, ours is no longer tacky but still soft. We didn’t add extra sikaflex although I am expecting to have to at some point but so far, 3 years later we have no leaks. It’s worked for us so far, I’m no expert tho, but given the ridges in the roof, this was the best way I could find at the time. Good luck with you build 😀😀

    Hi, how did you secure the wood to the inside of the van?

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  4 роки тому +3

      Hi, if you wanted to you could use some sikaflex to stick in on but you don't have to. The two parts of the skylight, inside and outside part meet in the middle and screw together, sandwiching the wood and steel of the roof together. Because its stuck down to the outside of the roof it then can't move. Hope that makes sense.

    When you did the cladding on the ceiling did you remove the bottom part again ? I am wondering if you accounted for the cladding but it wasn't there but you still are able to screw to vent together ?

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Richy, I didnt fit the bottom face plate of the skylight until after I'd done the cladding. You can do it one of two ways, either account for your cladding before you make up your wooden frame, so figure out what your total ceiling thickness will be you start. Or, you can do what I eventually did, which is there's enough overlap around the edge of the final face plate that I just butted my cladding up to my wooden frame and then when I put the face plate on it hides the joins so to speak. Either way you need to measure and plan it out before you make your frame up and fit the skylight. You can remove the wooden frame at a later date to adapt it but I think this could disrupt the integrity of you seal of the external part of the skylight to your roof. Hope that all makes sense lol, it's hard to explain. If you watch our ceiling video it may make a little more sense.
