So this week we experience first hand exactly what it is like when vanlife goes wrong!
If you're new around here this is not the type of video we would normally make, but for those that have been around for a while you will know we like to show the good and the bad, and this week it is most definitely bad!
This vlog certainly wasn't enjoyable to film or edit but its basically just an account of whats happened as it happened. What it is like to live in a van and something to consider before you decide if you can live in a van or indeed, travel across europe in one!
Breaking down in spain, europe has not been fun but hopefully we can soon get back to making some travel vlogs based around vanlife, we guess only time will tell how long we will be stuck in this limbo...

My Citroen dispatch broke down 3 days into a months solo trip down to Portugal,just me and the dog.Didn't know my dog wasn't covered with me on the recovery breakdown.After 3 days in 33c heat parked in a recovery yard, I managed to convince them my 2006 :-) van was worth 2000 as a camper, instead of the 800 they said and it arrived back in the UK 5 weeks later.I had to drive a left hand car back up through France (it was my first time driving abroad)pay for a taxi from England to pick me and the dog up and bring us back through the tunnel.Thought me a lot !.It ended up having a new recon engine put in,something had snapped inside it.Hope yours is not an expensive repair and you can get back on track with your travels.
Hi Sharon, wow, that sounds like quite the adventure you had there, nightmare! Luckily the aa have been great about the dog 😁 we do hope it's not too costly and we can get travelling again soon, thank you 😁👍
I put like this video not because I like your predicament but because you've shown so much resilience and (on camera at least) good humour. That's what I really appreciate about your videos, that you're grateful and thankful, even in situations that you weren't expecting to be in.

Egr cooler definitely, if it doesn't overheat or create extra pressure in the pipes it's not a head gasket, the egr cooler can be bypassed also or replaced not a big job done hundreds... Nice videos, best of luck!

So sorry to hear about the van, what a bummer, at least it wasn’t involved in an a accident! And although it might cost a few quid it can be repaired. Let’s hope they sort the repair quickly for you both and so glad your being looked after too ❤️ keep your chins up and carry on camping !!! Well air bee n beein xx

Bit late commenting but here goes, firstly a great channel, followed the build and was enjoying the trip, you guys have jumped to the top of my watch list and the quality of your vids just gets better each week with some great editing and music, being in Europe I am sure the Van will be repairable, If you were down here in Australia it would be different, chin up , merry Christmas.

Blimey what misfortune. We are setting off Sunday. Was booking AA breakdown as our first euro trip so will defo book and saw you Vlog before you left when Lou Booked the for your trip. Our Van has only done 4000 from new so still good to have that piece of mind. Stay strong and hunker down. John Gadget Gloating. 😁

Hi Emily & Louise . Really sorry to hear about your problems with the van. Pray its just the head gasket and not a cracked engine block or head. If the cylinder head has distorted (because of overheating) it will need to be skimmed on a milling machine, so it fits tightly onto the block when refitted. Garages do not have this machinery as a rule and need to send the head to an engineering works for this to be done. thats why it takes some time to sort out and complicated by Covid and Xmas. Still you are both so resilient and optimistic. I hope it will not be too expensive to sort out and you are soon back in the van to continue your odyssey in Spain. Very best wishes to you both.

Gotta be said though the cover you took out seems to be brilliant atm, can’t imagine how it would be for that to happen and have to deal with it all yourselves in a foreign country!

Sorry to hear abut the van - at least you're still in good spirits and you'll be back on the road, eventually...... Relieved to know you're also getting a hire car to transport the 'essential' snacks back to the hotel / apartment 😊

The EGR valve went on our Sprinter whilst in Sweden & hats off to the AA they were really helpful, kept following up with us to make sure we were OK etc. We got our hotel covered which made it way less painful!
Yeah they have been great, can't fault them so far with our van either. 😀🙂

The first thing I have to say is well done for being so positive and getting on with sorting it all out . We've broken down in France with the caravan on the back , they took the car away and bought it back five days later . We also had a landcruiser that blew the radiater top off on the Spanish border , but we managed to nurse it back to Dover . I'm sure you will both manage and the nightmare it all is at the moment will become a distant memory that you will look back on . We are normally in Spain at this time of year and would quite happily have tried to help , however I've every confidence you will manage the situation . We hope everything works out ok . Exactly the same thing happened to mine, same engine, loss of coolant and white smoke, thought it was head gasket, turned out to be the EGR cooler
If you loosen the 2 bolts between EGR valve and cooler and water drips out that's the problem. Hope it's not too expensive, good luck.

I feel your frustration, we lost our hire van in new Zealand due to an accident. Remember standing at the side of the road with bags watching the low loader take it away.
We felt pretty helpless, the hire company sorted everything they were spot on , we ended up in a small chalet on a campsite and a new van turnd up days later. I know its different for you as it's you own pride and joy. But looking back it's like a small adventure within a bigger one. Keep smiling you be back on the road in no time'

Fingers crossed it will be easy for the garage to obtain any parts needed and they are able to fix it quickly for you. Started watching and heard you say about the van and had to fast forward to find out what had happened, then I could watch from the beginning!

Greetings from the land of excellent weather, if you like cold, fog, rain and overcast cloudiness, formally the UK! Sorry to hear about your van. I'm really going off French vans! I know a Dutch couple who had a Peugeot van that blew a head gasket in Spain earlier this year! Don't know what it is about modern vehicles. Back in the 1980's vehicles became very reliable, especially those made in Japan. The thought then of a head gasket blowing was remote and was something that regularly happened to vehicles made in the 1970's, especially ones made by the then British Leyland! Was recently talking to a person that works in a car parts shop. He was saying that within the last twenty years or so, vehicle problems that were resolved in the 1980 have returned! I've got a 1989 Toyota Carina (now a classic car), immaculate condition; it goes and goes, rarely if ever giving me trouble. Can't say the same about my Smart Car that has low mileage, only 20,000 miles on the clock and was built in 2002! I maintain my own cars and only take them to a garage for their annual MOT. Nowadays I really think vehicles are like the 1970's whereby their parts have a limited life expectancy built into them and are always expensive to replace! I think car manufacturers probably make more money out of their parts and repairs than the sale of the vehicle in the first place!
I'm looking around for a van to convert into a camper van and am put off by computerized management systems! Once upon a time vehicles were relatively straightforward and most practical people could fix them, not anymore! Nowadays a mechanic needs a degree in computer technology to know what's going on! I sincerely hope you are back on the road soon; I feel for you as it must be very frustrating, especially this time of the year! Couldn't have been a worse time with Christmas just around the corner. Am glad there's someone else that also doesn't like Christmas, neither do I! I've detested it for years as when I was young, the family would gather around the Christmas Tree for a traditional family argument! lol
Let's face it, any of them can break down. We've had nearly every big make of car and theyre all with their own faults, especially these days with all the electrics! Oh, and hello to a fellow scrooge 😁 thanks for watching 😁👍

. Keeping upbeat. Yes it is a pain but it's part of the van life. Last year our gearbox went. It was just before we got into Spain. The garage we got taken to was excellent as it was a sunday we broke down Monday they confirmed it was gearbox and said leave it with us we sort it we explained that we lived in it and as there was an aire up the road that is where we stayed until the Thursday when the gearbox arrived from italy. It was put in to van and they started at 8.30am and by 17.30pm we had our home back. So sometimes it's not that bad. Hope it sorted this side of Christmas. It was lovely for John and mandy to turn up to keep you busy to hugs and kisses to aj xxx
Hi Shelley, yeah these things can and do happen, not alot we can do apart from enjoy the time in our air bnb 🙂 oh I do hope ours is as quick as you're one although they have had it since Thursday and have said they are not even able to look at it till at least Wednesday this week but after that here's hoping its fixed before Xmas😀😃 oh yeah its always good to get a visit from those guys 🙂😁

Yeah, there isn't anything we can do, we just have to sit and wait it out. We have a place to stay and we are going to enjoy the next week, chilling out and making different kinds of videos 😀
Hi you two, Not nice when your van plays up not fun when a car plays up but its your home...We are also getting ready to start out on the long journey through France down to Spain in our motorhome and this will be our 8th winter in Spain. You never know our paths might cross as the other week on John & Mandys video about being parked up on a Spanish reservoir we had in fact parked up on more or less the same exact spot within a meter or so LOL fab place . Good luck getting the van sorted and back on the road hope its quick and not tooooooo much cost.

Found a post from 2012... is this what sounds like?
The HDi carries head gaskets (and age) very well indeed and it's not always the case that the first signs of HG failure rapidly escalate. depending on how it's going they can go on for ages and ages. And old trick is to leave the expansion tank cap loose so the system does not pressurise.
How much are you topping up in 1500 miles? A full header tankful or just a little bit?
If it's just a drop one in every 1500 miles then I'd not worry about it overly. Just keep and eye on it..
Are you sure it's caused by pressurisation and not a small leak elseware in the system? A pinhole that only spills hot coolant as steam can be almost invisible...
It's a full tank, hopefully the garage will let us know by mid week. I just know from experience if I risk it and keep driving then I could make the situation much worse!
I broke down 3 times this summer in Portugal, alone with my dog 🤦🏼♀️ but in 40 degree heat 🥵, absolute nightmare! Thought my dog was gonna collapse! I’ll only travel winter now for that reason. Good luck girls..hope you’re back on the road soon and maybe bump into you one day, currently in the algarve : )
Wow, 3 times! That's a lot! Yeh travelling with a dog can make everything 10 times harder sometimes. We were so lucky that the aa have really looked after us, and been very considerate of the fact we have a dog, in fact they've considered him as much as they have us!

that's a real bummer girls, same happened to us several years ago in France, took them 18 days to fix the camper, but like you we had cover, RAC, thankfully, they were brilliant, fixed us up with hotel, wouldn't have been easy for me as we had two dogs at the time, and we had a hire car so we were able to continue our holiday in the Pyrenees, we actually had a great time in the end, got to see lots of places we wouldn't have taken our 28' motorhome. enjoy the adventure and it'll all turn out OK.
That's the bonus, I'm already looking where I can get the car where I would never have got the van 🤣😂 hopefully won't be 18 days but I fear with Xmas in the mix it's gonna be a long wait!

So sorry to hear about your breakdown. Glad to see that the AA are looking after you. We always take a few IKEA bags with us just in case something happens. Stay safe and try to keep your chin up. Ultimately its only money and nobody has been hurt.

Goodness - I am torn between feeling for your van troubles - or being amazed at the artistry of the intro. It seems that, like a real artist, the more you suffer, the better the output! :D Things sound a little serious mechanically with the van - fingers crossed that you manage to get it sorted with as little expense and stress as possible!
Oh - and the old quarter in Granada - the Albayzin, on the hill facing the Alhambra palace is really beautiful. I'm glad you made it there - although the weather didn't seem quite ideal for walking about.
There is a long tradition in the region of living in dwellings partially or fully dug into the ground / hillside. With temperatures inland / away from the coast reaching towards 50 Celsius during the summer, in the past when there was no air conditioning it was the only way to maintain some sort of bearable climate indoors. Even in Granada there are a number of traditional bars with gypsy/flamenco dancing dug into the hill. It also helps in the opposite direction in the winter with the hill acting as insulation - as Emily pointed out :-)

I know you’re in a predicament being over there, & but depending on your van’s mileage (ie, if it’s high) & while waiting for news I’d get some UK quotes for a another engine, just to compare when you’re quoted the repair bill (being it’s a Citroen dealer!) That is if you can get it back home. Fingers crossed they can fix it without too much fannying around 🙈🤞
Yeah definitely, bit of a pain but with us trying to smaller garages first and them not wanting to touch it, we thought we would go with what the roadside call out advised, here's hoping they can fix it 🙂🙂
I have binge watched all your vids - really enjoyed the van build series and just caught up to date with your travels - so sorry for your van breakdown, but sounds like you’ve now got things under control. Glad the AA came good. Can I ask where you get your mood music and sound effects (apart from the wife) for your vids? Do you subscribe somewhere or do you find freebies?

Now though I am using epidemic sound for all my music and the sound effects, except for the ones the wife provides 😂🤣 it's a subscription service but has thousands if tracks, hope that helps. Being a garage owner I have seen so much shit happen to modern vehicles, so much so that I tour Europe with a 1995 van that I rebuilt. Simple straightforward mechanical systems that are pretty foolproof, done multiple trips without issues, modern vehicles are so so troublesome. Our ‘good’ car is a Merc, 2 year old and has had 3 warranty jobs...... crap.
Stay positive all will come good and you’ll be motoring soon once more. Keep vlogging....
Thank you, we will keep vlogging I'm sure. When I first started driving I used to try and do all my own repairs, now with all the electronics involved I don't even attempt them, it's such a shame really.

Identify the garage where it is at ... and chase chase chase....I had an alternator failure near Valencia and after 3 days they had done diddly squat...I chase and half a day later - fixed.

I had exactly the same breakdown in the middle of nowhere in the Outer Hebrides a couple of years ago. We ended up sleeping in an industrial estate (no toilet!) until it was fixed. It’s a pain in the arse when it’s also you’re house. Hope it get fixed soon.

Maybe in each youtube vids have links to all your equipments / softwares etc. - not sure how it works but i think you get something per clicks you get on the links you provid. (Just a thought)

Ugh I feel for you so much and love your attitude. I had engine troublems at over 2000m at the top of the Simplon Pass between Switzerland and Italy back in August, but I didn't have European breakdown cover sadly (out of my budget). I had to make the very hard decision to see if I could get the van back to the UK, which miraculously I did, but it was majorly stressful, as it could have broken down fully at any time.
Watching your experience has definitely convinced me to take out European breakdown cover next time, and I will also ensure I have a decent pot of savings put aside to deal with these kinds of things next time around, that I didn't have this time.
Hence why I start a new job in Cumbria on Tuesday (for a motorhome company ironically), instead of still being on my Euro travel adventure. 😭 So this is all about saving up for next time!!
I am so very glad you haven't had to cut your own trip short, even if Christmas in a Spanish apartment might not have been your dream when you set out. I know you'll make the best of it wherever you are.
I hope your van home is fixed ASAP and isn't too budget-busting!

Oh yeah we are so glad we got the breakdown cover and it has paid for itself 3 times over already without this weeks hotel and hire car costs, well worth the money for sure. Yeah we have a little pot put aside for such things, which massively help 🙂👍

It's bad luck indeed but there are positives to take from the situation.
You are staying in a reasonable place with your own transport and will have more time to reflect on what you've been doing so far and what you want to do, post repair.
It will be nice to go on short local trips rather than feeling the need to press on to the next place.
Also you have blue skies and sun and as you probably know Kent has six of the top ten highest CV19 areas in the UK presently, so anywhere else is preferable.

Hi si, yeh shouldn't be too bad, as long as it doesn't take too long, we will have to start paying for hotel soon enough and then on top of the repair cost it could get expensive quickly. That is real bad luck. Had the tread come off a rear tyre on a Dutch motorway. Fixed in a couple of hours so not nearly as stressful but really feel for you.

@@campervibe Still not replaced it was eventually getting new car I am not sure if its same engine or van size but my mate had one from his works place and in 18.000 odd miles i think he said required a new engine
You would think French are good at building cars if you watch "HUBNUT" He has a 2cv with 200.000 odd miles on its clock and possibly a different engine or possible rebuilt one and that 1986 car so your 65 plate shocks me how long it lasts.
I own a 2.2 transit van my van broke down it was a pulley system in middle front of engine its like rubberised item literally sheared off lost water and power steering £195 to fix that..
Does your van have a 6 year warranty..?
Only pay labour charges if your lucky Really hope you are because you seem to drive your van very sensible and with lots of care and attention.
