probably unwittingly as a filler word so he has more time to think about the stuff he actually wants to say. when some language is not your mother tongue it just doesn't roll right off the tongue as naturally and you just have to put a little more thought into it, especially when you are in an interview-situation.

for who wondering why he's speak close to native, he's from capital, Jakarta, it's really multiculture city (Indonesia have more than 300 language overall) and we need one language to communicate each other, that's why Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia) is invented without any accent in early era (around 1910-1920s), so it's easier to learn other language actually.

It was actually the opposite of what you're saying; because bahasa Indonesia is using alphabets just like English so learning it won't be too hard(true) but have a very different pronunciation in each alphabets; hence there will be that thick indonesian accent. I've lived in Au for 9 years and only found a couple out of hundreds who were able to lose their accent.

So the reason he sounds so naturally American is because before, he had never heard English, right? So the only English he heard was in an American accent, from all the videos. So naturally that is the accent he picked up.
May he had been taught English in school, he would've had an Indonesian accent.

Not to mention dude is straight up home-schooled, so the only accent he might have picked up was from those videos. It's called language assimilation. Some people are much better at it than others.
