Very nice video! I worked on the film, so it was fun to see all those locations again. Peter's apartment was built as a set, the production designer used the basic look of the apartments in the complex as a jumping off point, and it was located in the back of the office complex where we shot the Initech scenes. The rear of the office set was the conference room where the two Bobs hold their interviews; on the other side of the wall there was a big open space, the drop ceiling cleared out for maximum height and the apartment set was built there, which included a little recreation of the stairway landing and railing glimpsed outside the door when Peter enters.
It’s such an honor to have you here to have your input thank you so much. That is so fascinating. I just recently watched the movie and I was thinking… Man, maybe I was active real apartment location, but you have confirmed it. That’s so cool.
I saw that quick glimpse of the stairwell, and I was like… Maybe I was at the real location, but you just confirmed it there. Great job at re-creating the practical location.!!
@@TampaJay We indeed shot the exteriors at the same spot you were at, including the scene with Peter and Lawrence talking outside the apartments. I never went inside the actual apartment so it was interesting to see in your video how similar it was to the set!
I was in the movie in the scene inside Chotskis (a/k/a Old Alligator Grill). You can see me in the background in the scene. Got to meet and talk to Jen and Mike Judge. Sat and watched scenes on the prompter after we filmed. So fun!
@@bunberrierI’m the girl in the background in the burgundy outfit with bangs. They actually cut bangs for the scene. While I was mortified, I knew my hair would grow back. Haha!
Originally the chase Bank/Chotski's was the alligator grill. They closed back in the early 2000's. They had pictures of the cast, signed and hung on the walls.
The scene where they walk through the drainage ditch right there near the building was preceded by a scene with a building in the background that is nowhere around there. So, apparently there were two different cuts of the same scene with the same dialogue and they stitched them together. If you watch the movie it's when Tom is running toward them. The building right behind him is a large building. They start talking with the building in the background. Yet, when they get to the drainage ditch, they conversation continues as if uninterrupted, but that was two different locations. The drainage ditch was right there, but the tall building was somewhere else, either in Austin or Dallas. It makes me wonder if they originally cut the whole scene at the other location but later decided they wanted to do the drainage ditch scene and reshot part of it there.
I worked in that office building for a few years starting in 2000 as an exec assistant. I saw 9/11 go down from a conference room in that building. The movie had just been filmed there apparently and the staff that was there at the time was thrilled. Many had a copy of the movie at their desks. I, for some reason, didn't really watch the movie until I left working there. I regret that now! It's one of my favorites. It's so funny to see them walking around the office and recognizing areas.
At the time the movie was filmed, the Chotchkie's restaurant was The Alligator Grill on South Lamar. It was a fun place, way cooler than the one in the movie. This brings back memories of growing up in Austin in the 90s.
I miss the restaurant on South Lamar where they filmed all of the Friday Night Lights diner scenes. Can’t remember the name but they made great burgers and pizza.
I'm so glad they didn't make a sequel, because the film stands on its own and is a perfect time capsule of the tech bubble from the mid-90s thru the early 2000s. Those were the days.
wtf. For 25 years I had convinced myself this was filmed in Dallas/Ft. Worth. I guess it was the Las Colinas reference in the movie. Now I am slightly disappointed that I spread such widespread misinformation about that movie's filming location. LOL cool video, thanks
I thought the same thing. I'm pretty sure I was fooled by a highway sign that says "Dallas" during the opening traffic jam. It must be a sign for a highway going to Dallas from Austin but I thought it meant they were on the outskirts of Dallas. I didn't know Texas well enough to know where Las Colinas was. But Lawrence does complain that he has to get up at 4:00am and "drive my ass up to Las Colinas every day this week". Google maps says it's about 3 hrs. So with that bad traffic he's probably on site by 7:30 or 8 which seems reasonable for a commercial drywall guy.
The opening traffic scene with the street signs was filmed in Dallas. You can see the Hilton at the intersection of 635 and the tollway. Everything else, including the traffic jam scene, was filmed in Austin.
My first apartment in Austin was just a few blocks from Inatech. It was so weird when I found out, because I had been driving past it routinely and never knew.
That building used to be Crystal Semi Conductor. They were my client in the 90's so I visited them often. There is a hallway that runs the length of the front window they called the "Archery Range".
Imagine living in one of the apartments and during a natural conversation office space came up but you never seen it, so you go home and decide to watch it and realize your apartment is in the movie, or heck even working at any of the buildings featured or in the background
I was a designer for Swingline in Chicago when they were contacted by the producers of this movie for permission to use the stapler. I didn't design the 646, that stapler was designed in the 1960s, but I don't know who did it. My manager was one of the people who signed off on it. A year after it hit the theaters I was working in Houston for a computer company and living in a generic apartment like Peter's. A year later got laid off and I took a temp job working at an office that looked like the Initech office. Houston and Austin look remarkably similar.
Fun fact, completely unrelated to the movie: if a manmade depression meant to hold water does NOT normally have water in it, and is usually empty except after storms, it's a DEtention pond. A REtention pond normally has water whether or not it rained recently, and is rarely empty.
Hi there Jay, this is another fun and amazing video my friend!!! I love that movie, it made me laugh like crazy. I just watched it the other night!!! One clarification, the very beginning of the driving to work sequence was actually an aerial shot of IH635 in Dallas. The camera is located west of the Galleria / Dallas North Tollroad, looking east over the westbound lanes.
The very first shot of the opening (just after the "Twentieth Century Fox" card) is in Dallas. LBJ (635) to the west of Dallas North Tollway looking east. It shifts cropping in time with the music, but the Galleria is to the north (left). The silvery office to the right has changed owners and tenants many times since the movie, but the Galleria is still the Galleria. After this the opening moves to Austin.

You werent too far off from some of the film locations for Idiocracy. I was an extra in idiocracy for the 2 scenes filmed in San Marcos at the Starplex theater and downtown Court house. The opening credits traffic jam scene was filmed on Braker. I've driven that road hundreds of times, and I've never seen it THAT backed up. Probably just filmed them waiting at the red light on Burnet Rd. I've DEFINITELY played that Scarface song while driving through that area. 😂 Also the Initech office building is in South Austin, so it would've been a horrible commute for Peter. And he was driving the wrong direction going westbound on Braker instead of heading east toward I-35, which would be close to a two-hour commute in rush hour traffic even by 1998 standards. If you're going to willingly live anywhere along Metric (not a nice area at all) then your work should be within walking distance.

I’ll never forget when the movie came out seeing the trailer, I thought to myself What a stupid movie. Who would watch that crap. Man was I wrong. One of my favorites. Always quoting lines with friends. Pure gold.
The opening scene with the highway traffic is roughly 13000 Welch Road and 635 in Dallas and I actually had an office cubicle job at that intersection a few years before the movie came out. If you look at the street view on Google Maps (go to the middle of the Welch Road bridge and look East) you can see the large buildings on the horizon. The road looks slightly different because a toll road was installed down the middle. If memory serves me correctly, the movie was going to be filmed in Dallas but it didn’t work out and it ended up being in Austin instead. I remember seeing that movie with a bunch of other fellow cubicle buddies and we giggled our asses off the whole movie because it was so true. Especially the part where Lumberg is explaining job codes. Well that and the ^*%#^% printer that never wanted to work. 🤔🤣 🖨🏏
This movie was almost an exact portrayal of my life at the time. In 1999 I lived in Las Colinas and worked as a programmer a few blocks away. The grassy canals were there and tgi-fridays nearby. My apartment had thin walls and I worked with other young men like Bolton and Samir. I also strangely began questioning life and one day left the job and never went back not giving notice.
lol my dad lived in Irving nearby Las Colinas and was also a programmer, though in the early 90's, like 92 or 93 I think. I really thought this movie was shot in Las Colinas because of how similar everything looked to that region of DFW, so I was actually surprised to learn today that it was filmed in Austin.
I feel ya, man. I related to plenty of things in it. My office digs were nicer than what you see in the movie (not many cubicles), but I could relate to the dreariness. I was a programmer at a small IT firm. For me, it was because of a dysfunctional work environment. Stuff would happen that didn't make sense, and we were just putting up with it. I reached a point where I quit, and it felt so liberating. I felt like Peter, where he just didn't care. The way Peter felt about Lundberg reminded me of how I felt about my boss, though he was not as casual and low-key. Peter's apartment living felt a little familiar. The comedy with that was funny as hell. The part I couldn't relate to at all was the angst, wanting to beat up office equipment, steal money, burn the place down. I just had to move on. The movie came out the year I quit. So, it was timed perfectly.
@@drewp1974I live in Austin (and even saw them filming Office Space on the way to school way back when, on Metric Blvd). $2000 sounds right, unfortunately
I must have watched Office Space at least a dozen times, but only on my last viewing (for the first time on blu-ray, every time previous it was on DVD), I finally noticed the "Morningwood Apartments" prop sign and got the joke. It's one of those Easter eggs you have to happen to notice, otherwise you miss it. I guess the HD finally helped, too, since I never saw it in the theater.
Okay I legit watched this on my desktop while filling orders for my business and I thought it was Adam the Woo the ENTIRE time! I did a quick CTL F and typed in "Adam" to see if anyone else agreed. This comment came up. Here we are fam!
Office Space is one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it as a teenager, and liked it. So cool seeing the filming locations as they exist today.
There is an actual Morning Woods subdivision outside of Memphis. Someone always removes the S in Woods on their sign and they have to continually replace it.
I'm from Austin and was working in a cube farm for a high tech company here when this movie was filmed and the released. I immediately related to everything about it and it became one of my favorite films. Great video, Tampa Jay!

Yesss! I love this. Hands down, one of the most entertaining movies ever made. Very cool that that couple let you into their apartment. I too have had a printer moment. Incredibly gratifying.
It was so much fun tracking down this iconic film glad you enjoyed it Bridget. That couple was so cool they didn’t know that it was filmed there, I broke the news.
Dude you totally reset the bar with this one. Excellent job destroying the printer. Glad you're enjoying austin, some of my old stopping grounds being a Texas boy myself. Now I got to go watch office space again. Thanks Jay and keep up the good work 👍✌️🤙🤘👏
I attended a meeting in this office complex and thought it might have been from Office Space. I mentioned it to the people I was meeting, and they showed me a wall of photos of the movie production. I was surprised I recognized it, lol. Great movie!
"I don't really like talking about my flair". Smart writing. Don't just give the audience one boss to hate, throw in another little Napoleonic weasel. Great movie and one of the best examples that there is some truth in all humor. In this movie, a lot of truth.

I was one of the guys who laid data cable for the set, so some of the computers could have an internet connection. Ironic, because although I worked for several companies installing data and fiber optic cabling in Austin at the time, I moved to L.A. soon afterwards and worked on a ton of films and TV shows as an actor. I later ran into Gary Cole at a Ralph’s - and couldn’t remember the name of the film. I told him that the film… where he would speak with the coffee cup in his hand… he was a great in. He said “Um, Office Space?”. I also later worked with Ron Livingston, but I can’t recall what the heck that project was.

Which is why I can't understand how this movie wasn't a big hit in 1999. It is sooo funny and so relatable.
lol my dad lived in Irving nearby Las Colinas and was also a programmer, though in the early 90's, like 92 or 93 I think. I really thought this movie was shot in Las Colinas because of how similar everything looked to that region of DFW, so I was actually surprised to learn today that it was filmed in Austin.
@@ebinrockI was the only person in the theatre opening night…I’ve never laughed harder in my life
I feel ya, man.
Wasnt lawrence waking his ass up early to head up to las colinas
went to this in theaters back in 99... first date!.
girl is gone, but movie remains
That’s how I feel about the fast and furious and now there’s 9 of them smh
Never go to the movies on a first date.
Did you guys break up because she slept with Lumberg? LOL!!
Also fun fact: Peter's apartment in 2008 was $580/mo. Today, it's $2,000 LOL
No. Not in TX.
San Diego, where I live. Yeah.
2200-2800 a month.
@@drewp1974I live in Austin (and even saw them filming Office Space on the way to school way back when, on Metric Blvd). $2000 sounds right, unfortunately
Since everyones moving to texas, that makes sense. But probably even more so in dallas or houston.
@@drewp1974 You must never been to Austin LOL. Im from orange county and its getting the same
Watched the opening scene being filmed where the traffic is stopped and the old dude was walking. I was at Austin’s IBM building #45 watching the fun.
I never realized the apartment complex is named “morning wood apartments”. That is totally brilliant.
@@ebinrock Kind of like "Bushwood Country Club" from Caddyshack.
I thought I was watching an Adam the Woo video when I first heard your voice and sentence structuring.
Exactly! Me too
Yea. Almost too close
Okay I legit watched this on my desktop while filling orders for my business and I thought it was Adam the Woo the ENTIRE time! I did a quick CTL F and typed in "Adam" to see if anyone else agreed. This comment came up. Here we are fam!
A small film, from twenty and more years ago... and here I am, in 2024, watching a tour of the locations. Amazing testament to "movie magic".
Office Space is one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it as a teenager, and liked it. But when I grew older and got hired at my very own office job...I developed an entirely new love for the movie and in many ways, the filmed saved my life. I hated that job lol Loved this video! So cool seeing the filming locations as they exist today.
There is an actual Morning Woods subdivision outside of Memphis. Someone always removes the S in Woods on their sign and they have to continually replace it.
I like how mundane the buildings are. Really adds to the look of the film
“Oh! Well this not a mundane detail Michael!!!”
@@MartyMcFly88u are a genius! Great reference!😂
So mundane I worked across from Initech for 20 years and just found out.
@@ztimboyeah lol same! I live 2 minutes from there and have walked many times passed it 😂
I'm from Austin and was working in a cube farm for a high tech company here when this movie was filmed and the released. I immediately related to everything about it and it became one of my favorite films. Great video, Tampa Jay!
I never realized the apartment complex name was morning wood. That is hilarious. Those guys are brilliant
Morning Wood Apartments HAHA I never knew - - Comedy genius!!
I worked for Accenture when they had offices in there, it was a trip to walk in there.
We I used to go to old alligator grill also where the restaurant scenes where filmed lol.
I'm not usually a fan of filming location vids but this one was truly awesome. Maybe because I love this movie too. Very, very cool that couple let you into their apartment to look around. Genuine Texans too from the sound of their accents. Great vid, Jay.
Thank you! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it. They were a really sweet and awesome couple
Thank you !
Thank you so much for this! Office Space has been such a influential movie in my life, came out at a amazing time in my life and the movie made everything even better, it always will! This has just made the movie even better :)
This is the best Office Space locations video I've ever seen. Thank you Brother!
10:00 "Morning Wood" sounds like a Beavis and Butthead joke for sure😂
It actually is though
Thank you for doing this. This was one of my favorite movies growing up.
Mike Judge is an Texan legend and loves him some Austin 🤘🏻
I was in my car next to the car and trailer where Jennifer and Rob were having a conversation in their car. Up north near ACC campus. I feel like this was 97 or 98, but can't recall.
BRUH. They let you into their apartment! Hahahahahaha. And they knew Office Space!
I wonder if they knew it was the location before he showed up.
@@TampaJay lol, that’s awesome!
Dude you totally reset the bar with this one. Excellent job destroying the printer. Glad you're enjoying austin, some of my old stopping grounds being a Texas boy myself. Now I got to go watch office space again. Thanks Jay and keep up the good work 👍✌️🤙🤘👏
One of my favorite comedies of all time I am going to show you my “OH” face!!
You have any idea who played that character? Lol
@@barrybb5409 I knew exactly who it was the moment she first appeared on screen. Hard NOT to know it was Jennifer Aniston playing Joanna. This movie was right in the middle of the years of the run of the sitcom "Friends."
@@trainliker100 meant the other boss, lol. Look up who played the flair boss.
@@barrybb5409 Now THAT I did not know. The writer director. Apparently, he based the character on an actual TGI Fridays boss he observed mistreating employees.
Meeting with the Bobs
Yep haha thank Kevin
@@TampaJay keep up the good work
I was one of the guys who laid data cable for the set, so some of the computers could have an internet connection.
When I was watching office space over and over in my teens,I honestly wanted Peter's life. An office job with a nice apartment. I never understood why he was so unhappy lol
