  • In today’s video I reveal the choice I made on whether to raise my height of cut or perform a reset cut on my bermuda Tifway 419 lawn. In last week’s video I showed y’all that my lawn was starting to scalp after my regular cuts, so a decision was made. I scalped my bermuda down to .35” and followed up the scalp with a core aeration. I decided that I had enough time left in the season to do a mini renovation on the lawn, because last year I did a similar project on Labor Day weekend. We scalp bermuda to remove the top growth and allow the new grass to poke through sooner. It also allows better penetration to the soil layer and more direct sunlight as well. I also decided to aerate. Core aerating pulls out plugs from your lawn and the holes left in their place allow easier access for water and other nutrients to reach the root zone. If your lawn is experiencing a lot of stress, it’s not a good idea to scalp. I’ll be tracking the recover over the next few weeks in my future videos.

      Sometimes. Usually it’s just me, or my brother though.

    So i just core areated my lawn today, but unlike your lawn, my plugs are soil/clay. I should let it absorb back into the ground by itself? When should i mow again?

    Amazon won’t deliver Celsius to my area. Anyone else have this issue? Going to try and order from another source.

      I’m not sure! I’ve seen the excluded states at the bottom of a few of those products. Luckily, Texas isn’t usually one of them!

    Hi Rhett,
    I put in Latitude 36 Bermuda 3 weeks ago. I want to do some leveling and wondered how lomg I should wait. I'm in Austin and just found your channel. Thanks for your help!

      Hey Bart! At this point in the season, and with newer sod, I would wait until next spring to level. Anytime after April 1st is a good rule of thumb. You’ll beat a little of the heat that way.

    Well you giving me a little confidence. I scalped 2 areas on my lawn. My real trouble areas. I scalped it down as low as I could without cutting into the dirt (first spring project will be to do my 1st leveling). I’ve been very uneducated and having my Bermuda 3” tall. The area where I resodded last spring, I couldn’t bring myself to scalp, but I did lower it to 2” and I’ll work over the next few weeks to bring it down to 1”.
    My backyard I mowed down to 1” because not to worried about stressing out the back. I also put down some weed and feed and humic acid. We’ll see how it does. Wish I could share pictures.

      The best thing about Bermuda is that you can afford to experiment a little bit. Especially in the heat! It’s going to grow back. It definitely likes to be cut low. I appreciate you watching and commenting!

    I just put in a tifway lawn this spring, and your content has been very informational. I have similar weather to you, when would be a good time to attempt a leveling project. I was thinking next spring after the lawn has been actively growing for a month or two. Can't wait to see the final results from the scalp. Keep up the great work!

      I would suggest to try and do your leveling project in April, because the grass is working it’s way up to high gear, but it’s not miserably hot just yet. Glad you’re enjoying the content! I really appreciate you commenting.

    Hey Man. Great video. I’m in Houston Tx. But do you think that it would be beneficial to fertilize before to help? Or is it not worth it? Thanks. Keep up the good work

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  3 роки тому

      If you fertilize before I would try to do it at least 5-7 days out. You don’t want to scoop up all your fertilizer when you’re scalping. Aside from that, it definitely will help!

    I'm scared to do a hard scalp. Worried that its gonna suddenly go cold and then I'd be screwed. I also wonder what the uneducated masses think when they see that you "destroyed" your yard....

      They already think I’m crazy, I’m sure lol so who knows. I’ve definitely gotten some strange looks. If the weather shifts and the grass doesn’t get back to 100% I’ll be sure and document on here for everyone to see!

    If you had more daylight would you pick up the cores?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  3 роки тому +1

      If I had solid plugs I would try to pick them up. Mine are literally just sand though. So they breakdown as soon as you put any pressure on them.

    Love the channel. How do you make sure that everything you put on the Lawn is safe for your dog? We got a new puppy and I'm nervous to spray anything with him around. Thanks!

      @@LawnInsider hey thanks for the response! Some things I look at don't say anything about pets/kids, which I assume to mean unsafe for them. Is there a way to figure out how long after until it will be safe. For example, if I partition my yard and keep my pup on the unfertilized side, how long until I can switch and do the other side?
