13 years later... Yes. I loved the 90's. My snare days are 20 years behind me, but those were the chops to which we aspired, back then; my drum instructor drilled them into me at the point of a hostile Thom Hannum stick. And it's still what looks and sounds best, to me. 😁👍👍
The look of it really is outstanding. I was in high school 89-93 and played quads. I totally looked up to the real drum corps guys. Even decades later, seeing their technique is breathtaking.
funny because scojo feels the exact opposite way, playing it clean while being able to groove is way more harder than playing the same thing standing still. and this show also had the monkey arms too, so i dont quite understand the hate for visual stuff in the battery on this video. Seems misguided and kinda dim. Watch dccs podcast with scojo, really interesting talking points from someone who's actually still in it and whos been through all stages, marcher, instructor, caption head and judge. Anyways dont have such a stiff attitude and youll enjoy more outta life :)
@@TheSynergy40 I had to look at when I originally posted the comment - 11 years ago. I have to say my thinking on the evolution of marching arts has changed. My previous comment definitely screams, “Get off my lawn!” ✌️
I'm pretty sure that somewhere, Float is still teaching drumlines (and playing trash cans at Disneyland). But, I know what you mean. I'm happy to say I got to play both the "old" and "new" BD warm-ups.
@SweetWilly013 This is the first year for Ditty. The one in the video was the third version that year. The first version had the ending from the 82' opener, but was hard on the hands if you were cold. The second was pretty cool but it was designed to be played faster, Kevin decided he didn't like it and put this ending in around May.
lol its surprising to see someone that good to notice the tenor quality. or maybe its just that the camcorder is over 14 YEARS OLD?!?! lol don't worry about the tenors! its about the snares
They started the trend, but BD took it to the next level, that said, I believe someone on the Star 93 snare line marched with BD in 1994. I think it’s that dude that passed away not long after.
.....stick heights were definitely not better back then........the snares just didn't use the full rebound then, u can tell especially on the opening of the ditty. (right after the single hand accent tap thing)
@cosmodrum1 haha. i was replying to someone else's comment about heights or something. I'm not saying anything bad about the line, just pointed something out. Everyone on the line was doing it, which is the point of a good line, uniformity. But I still stand behind my comment.
whats the deal with there not being any even minor upgrades to drum technology in 15 years? these yamahas are the exact same design as the corps get brand new this year. any other industry, companies get darwin-ed out of business for that kind of lack of innovation. whats going on?
we play this for our High School Drumline. Every other drumine in the valley hates us. Becuase we always get a Drum Caption for marching band... We all love it.
@theCultureShockband Honestly have no idea, lol. All know about Robby Bucks is the name of the exercise haha. 3/4 maybe? It's in some kind of 3 meter from what I can hear.
maybe because the design works. You wanna reinvent the drum? That's like reinventing the Steinway piano because it hasn't changed in 100 years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And there have been upgrades, check out the new tam a marching drums. Some really unique innovations.
the cpt was a dude his name is Roger Carter... he was the king back then for sure that was when i was HS, damn i am old now this sh** looks hella dated, love that flannel lol
I love this line. But I can never stand how the heights get progressively lower to the ends of the line. The accents from the dudes on the ends are nowhere near the accents of the dudes in the middle.
Rodger Carter is a fucking beast. 90 degree heights the whole time. A lot of the other dudes can't hang at that height.
The line has no place for that.
don't you love the 90's?
no arm, all wrist, extremely low taps? it's great.
And all the drums are adjusted to be level with each other.
@@mreynoldstrombone it looks so good but feels so bad

BD: Roger, you have to cut your hair
RC: I never cut it.
BD: well since u can play the sextuplets at vertical, we'll let it slide.
This was the year that BD revolutionized drumming and split parts for snares and the epitome of high sticking. Scott Johnson is a genius.
It's a shame he doesn't write for BD anymore, their books would probably be so much more tasteful.
@@mang058 man I haven’t been following the DCI circuit in a while ScoJo isn’t at BD anymore????!
@@snickertime100 Nope, he's obviously still there, just doesn't write the book anymore... I think he stopped around '16? Could be wrong tho
Learned this when I was 16 or 17. I'm 32 now. Still playing this one. ...#nerd.
I learned it as a 16 yo,
I’m still a 16 yo
#nerd
#stillcool
In fact, you can watch me play it on my channel lmao
this is the absolute BEST version of ditty out there.
waaay late reply.....check out 2004 line best "Ditty" ever
@@oldschooldrumcorps agreed
@@oldschooldrumcorps94 is better
They need to bring that accent tap intro back along with this exercise
They need to bring back Robbie Bucks at least
@@GeorgeCollinsThankfully Robbie Bucks made a return in BD's 2023 Warmup: "The Float"
So clean clear and crisp. I like this line playing ditty more than I do recent BD lines.
25 years later and I still hype on the downbeat of Robbie Bux....those were the days boys. Clean.Reefed.Beats.
The beginning accent tap went hard af
Dude...the sound quality on this makes it sound so powerful its unbelievable
woot! and i was born 11 days later!!! yay i was born after greatness!
Gotta love Kevin Murray wearing that flannel around the waist with pride, 😂😂😂
This is the best recorded video of Ditty out there
Loved it when dudes concentrated on playing clean rather than "grooving" with their feet spread and heads bobbing. This is the real deal.

lol, my drumline always talks of the time jesus was the center snare of the blue devils
Jesus wasn't white.

Hey Scott Johnson, you still out there?? Do you remember the Blue Devils?????
Everyone comments on heights.....BUT GODDAMNIT CENTER IS RAISING HIS GRACE NOTES ON THE COUNT OFF.....
thats why i put "but still awesome". Roger Carter is the man. haha. I think everyone wishes they could play singles like that.
=]
wow i love the sound of the tap off
God bless you and your future.
Hey look, it's Troy Hall. NT in the house.
wow bd drumline has changed! i like it better back then
God. You just gotta love those sweet ass tap heights.
The second to the centers left is my percussion instructor.
pretty cool! two of my directors marched for the bluecoats
0:51 cleanest para-diddles in history!!
ok roger carter's left hand is awesome, but why isnt everyone else doin it?
Roger Carter is a beast, thumbs up
If that guy at the end with the flannel shirt around his waist doesn't totally represent the 1990s, I don't know what does.
man look at those vertical heights!
dave glyde my former drum teacher.
Pearl is where bd is at now. I played on the new drums. Mixed with the Evans hybrids, the drums are money.

aside from me almost shitting myself at jesus's epic drum skills, i noticed something odd. is that guy wearing a kilt?
No, the tap off for Grievous is based of a drum lick from the song "Defy The Laws of Tradition". In fact, all of Grievous is based of that song...
It's Kevin "Murphy." And he's a former student of mine.
mholub the man with the flannel shirt around his waist is Kevin Murray.
mholub oh and he is the author of The Ditty
I was thinking the same.
I appreciate the comment but we actually did use stands most of the time. Just not warming up for shows but certainly rehearsals.
Where is Scott Johnson in this video
oh the times i waisted on this stuff......
What was that thing in the beginning. Sounded like it was from Pete's Groove
Scott Johnson is a genius, but I thought Star '93 epitomized high sticking :)
