I believe we’re watching a ‘60 Dodge Polara back out of the driveway. In front is a ‘56 Studebaker.
I was born and raised in Riverside, lived out off North Main near the Columbia Avenue golf course. My folks had a ‘49 Ford Custom they had purchased from LJ Snow Ford in Colton. In the fall of ‘55 they traded in the’49 on a new ‘56 Ford Fairlane two door hardtop.
I don’t recall any tolls on our local highways- I-5 wasn’t completed until 1958 and wasn’t a toll road. Some of what we’re seeing is probably Blue Jay/Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead.
Some of what we’re seeing- with the people on horseback- might be the foothills out beyond March Airforce Base. Back then it was called Pigeon Pass.
The flat track motorcycle racing might’ve been filmed out by what we called West Riverside- those who lived there would get huffy and say , “It’s Rubidoux not West Riverside.”
Those folks sure liked driving their Studebaker.
It used to be a good place to live. Rather quiet, fairly safe, almost no violence, neighbors who actually stood outside in the yard and visited with you because they really were good neighbors and cared about one another.
I’ve returned over the years and while some of what I remember is still in place, most is long gone and I know that happens over time (I’m pushing 70).
I do have good memories of Christmas shopping at Rouses and Montgomery Ward and J C Penney or Imperial Hardware. It was not far from Evensen’s Camera and Mode O’ Day dress shop.
I could go on but I think I’m beginning to bore people with an old man’s miscellaneous ramblings.

Wonderful moments from a simpler time. That appears to to be the Wigwam (Teepee Lodge) Motel in Holbrook AZ on Route 66 after they enter Arizona. Definitely looks like Cajon Pass when the I-15 was starting out. Old 66 is far left of the RR tracks in a couple shots. Dang, all those beautiful cars. Thanks for sharing the film.
Yes, where are those toll roads?

Lived in Riverside for a few years in the early 1980's. Near the end of the film, that may be an airshow at March Field, with the Box Springs Hills in the background. I DO KNOW the sequence from 13:40 to 15:30 was shot in Cajon Pass. 13:39-14:05 would be on the hillside up above Blue Cut roughly where I-15 is today. 14:05 to 15:30 was from Applewhite Forest Road looking down on Keenebrook. I'm guessing the horseback rides where also on that road. Interesting to see the train and amount of traffic on the old highway. It also appears there are fresh dirt road cuts in the hill above Kennebrook, that could be the first access roads being put in to start levelling the hilltops for I-15 to be built.

This is nostalgic, At that time I was about the same age as this 3- or 4-y/o boy 7:18 living in Buena Park where my dad was Mayor; following year we'd move to Long Beach, where I'd live for the next 12 years. Literally going back in time to my earliest memories of L.A. and environs. A much more innocent time, I must say.

Great stuff. Reminds me of my early days in Riverside County in 1977 and onward. I lived in Riverside county from 1981 to 2000 when Riverside County wasn't a cool place to live. Of course living behind the Orange Curtain was.

I know Helen Winder lived at 3142 Lemon St. Riverside in the mid to late 50s but that isn't her house in the footage. She would have been in her sixties at that time and she live until the late 60s.
