I actually tried running as many antiviruses as i could at once in a virtual machine, i think i got to like 4 at which point the system just became completely unusable as the antiviruses were basically screaming at eachother.
i might try again at some point though

I spend a lot of time helping my aging peers with their computers, and one of the first things I almost always do is shut off and uninstall the second-through-Xth AV product. They marvel at how much faster the system runs at reboot.

@Hy Ambitions My advice is to look through The PC Security Channel's videos or go to his web site and read what he's written. I personally use Comodo Internet Security Premium, and the free version of MalwareBytes which just sorta sits there until I call it up. Once a week I boot up the USB stick version of Bitdefender and run that. It boots up in Gentoo Linux (I think) and gives me the opportunity to remove malware that the other two don't see in Windows 10. I suppose that having a router/WiFi box with a hardware firewall helps too. If I'm going to browse really sketchy web sites I run a Linux environment from inside a virtual machine under VirtualBox. I doubt there's any 13yo hackers in China - their government doesn't allow competition. Keep your antivirus signatures up-to-date.

I ran more than one free AV when I moved to W10. Worked for a bit but ended up with a host of problems and blue screens that took weeks and a few W10 reinstallations to troubleshoot ... it was a disaster. I ditched all free VA and went to a single paid AV and that fixed everything.

what are your thoughts (or maybe testing against malware in future video) on: Comodo (Only HIPS + Containment/VS + FW), combined with Avira for signatures? considering cost/value/resource consumption.

  • @sebbes333

Not really multiple antivirus, but back in Windows XP I found a screensaver that could de-fragment the hard-drive, and also a I think Avast had a screensaver that searched your computer while the screensaver was running (which is genius, since you are not bothered by it), I think the Avast screensaver allowed you to launch another screensaver (the avast was just a boring text box, so you had the option to run something more "fun"), so I managed to run both those screensavers at once, it was quite nice, but I think a drawback was that the antivirus scan didn't remember where it scanned last time, so the first files got scanned a lot, while the last files barely got scanned ever.

From the comments here, it can be seen that people don't really have a problem with the conflict between two antiviruses... and in fact, that's easy to solve, you just need to turn off file protection from one antivirus and you have double protection for everything else. Double online protection cannot be the reason for the conflict.

Hey Leo, great content. I'm a novice PC builder. I recently built my first PC and i'm learning all of the ins and outs of cyber security and PC maintenance. One of the things that i didn't know was that Windows Device Security is not enabled by default(VBS, TPM, Secure Boot). These features have to be enabled in the BIOS and should be one of the first things done after a build. None of the PC Building gurus ever talk about this. In fact, there are more UA-cam videos on how to disable these features than enable them. Am i missing something? Are these features necessary or just more fluff in a already weak OS security system?

In the past running two anti malware scanners would bring the system down to a crawl.
I remember this when I had to install a anti malware program for a customer.
Done the uninstall of McAfee, it said Uninstall complete.
Installed the one they bought, rebooted, the system took ages to even boot in.
It seems mcafee didnt uninstall and had to quickly get a uninstall tool for it.
All of this happened right while the customer was waiting no less.
Once McAfee was purged, everything was fine.

In earlier days Norton didn’t play well with other AV programs. Now and for many years I have 1 AV, 1 VPN, and 2 hardwired hardened firewalls. And I also lock down my email servers to mitigate spam, which of course carries infectious links. You don’t have to be paranoid to be safe, just don’t browse and click where you shouldn’t. Oh yea and back up your stuff unless you like pain. Reading email headers would be a fun topic.... thanks!

Hi Leo, it's funny I've tested different AV products on slower older systems and newer systems and some AV products run better on older systems and some don't. the ones that run better on older systems I find are ESET, f-secure, webroot where on the older systems bitdefender and Kaspersky or a little bit of a drag on the system. It seems Comodo and avast are bit sluggish also Vipre take alot of bandwidth so they tend to slow things down.

Using Nod32 and MalwareBytes at the same time, no issues at all

Malwarebytes is an antimalware, a complement. So there should not be any problem but i dont recommend using the premium versión with other AV. Anyways if you feel secure, use them. ESET is a good choice! Greetings

Can you combine an Anti virus and application whitelisting (like carbon black) in one machine. And make them run in harmony. Is it even a good idea
In the office we have Maccafee ens 10.7+ carbon black bit9. The machines are for the most part are very slow despite the great pc spesifications. Noone seems to know how to fix the performance issues

    • @MaksKCS
      @MaksKCS 4 роки тому

It doesn't make sense to have an antivirus with application whitelisting. The whitelisting will just block everything that's not whitelisted. So either use only the one or the other.

@@MaksKCSI didnt get you I got confused at the end can you clarify. Which is the more recomemded option macafee or bit9.
Also do you have any article or best practice I can share with these insane security guys. They say that bit9 is complementing macafee. The performance of the machines is so bad even after working on configuring the two products for more than 6 or 7 years. And Noone seems to know why.

If you use Kaspersky internet security, then you won't need Malwarebytes. I have been using it for more than 3 years and I never had a virus issue. Everything I throw at it gets blocked right away.
