      I was at the Barksdale AFB 8th Air Force museum one time, saw a BUFF coming in for a landing, heard pilot lay back on the throttle, guess he was coming in too fast cuz next thing I hear is him pouring all the fuel into the engines and I guess going to try again. Ugly yet beautiful aircraft.

      Oh don't get me wrong, I'm extremely biased to this aircraft, my dad was a radar nav on'em for quite a while, and yeah Ryan they could be quite loud, we weren't at the end of the runway though so they didn't quite deafen us. Any other time, yes it was ear-piercingly loud.

    I found this channel by luck.1954 May turned 18. was accepted into an AF program called aviation cadet training program.3 months @Lackland AFB doing basic cadet training, learning how to become a "gentleman", then 11 months in training to become a navigator.Summer 1955 got my gold wings as a 2nd LT and assigned to B52 Squadron in Maine. Will never forget my first "for real" flight in one of these monsters. The sight of these monsters leaving as shown still gives me."shivers in me timbers".And we did carry nukes on training missions. During the Cuban missile crisis we carried a full load of nukes and were aloft for 92 hours circled over the North Atlantic and refueled.WE trained to get 12 52s off the field in 15 minutes or less, and that started when the claxon sounded in our alert shacks. At that time there would be ground crews in the cockpits with orders that when the claxons sounded they were to start the engines.The AC, capt, and 1st officer were first on board raced to the cockpit and took over from the ground crew and worked in tandem to get all eight engines going. There were times when the planes were moving before all engines were turning. I've always been proud that I flew on these magnificent machines, and the crews I served with were the best on this earth

      I was stationed at Carswell AFB, FT Worth, when the cold war was officially ended. The alert crews were told to go home. They thought it was an exercise "trick" and refused to leave the alert facilities. The Wing Commander was notified and he went and told them in person to go home, they were off duty. They reluctantly left. LoL

    • @basimpsn
      @basimpsn 6 років тому +3

      Those big flaps generate so much lift...it doesn't need any AOA on those wings to leave the ground.

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 5 років тому +5

      It's because they can't rotate because of their landing gear arrangement. They just have a high angle of incidence, which allows them to climb in a nose-down attitude, or while level.

    Reminds me of a takeoff show at Oxnard AFB before it was closed, We were sitting about half way down the field and all the planes were lifting off nearly in front of us and we could see the tops of their wings as they flew out of the pattern, all except for the F-104. We never did get to see the top of his wings till he came back down. He went out of the top of the pattern instead of the end. Damn that was cool.
    How I wish I could go back in time and record the airshows I saw in the 50's and 60's with a modern video camera.
    That KC-135 is so quiet with those new turbo fan engines. I have pictures of them taking off at Kadena AB, I was told with 165,000 lbs of fuel on each one, about 100 a day, for almost a year in 1972 and 73, rotating at about 9500 feet down an 11,500 foot runway. Those water burners were the loudest thing in creation this side of a bomb. 800 gallons into the exhausts to keep from melting the tailpipes.
    I watched some B-52s take off after a typhoon evac of Guam, at Kadena and a couple of them were very light and took off and climbed much quicker than this one. We could see the top of the plane as he climbed out.

    I was fortunate to have lived near McGuire, Lackland and Travis AFB's while growing up. From the time I was 8 until my early 20's my 2nd hobby was planespotting, I even bought my first SLR camera in 1972 to make the hobby better and learned to develop my own film when I was 15 (1975) to make it more affordable. I live near KFAT now, before 9/11 we used to be able to park near the 29R/L runways ends and watch outgoing F-105's, F4's, and F-16's (then). The 144th TFW has F-15's now, and we can only watch from the west end of the airport but occasionally I'll go take pictures of the transient aircraft on the north side of the airport.

    Back in the 90's my husband was station at Robins AFB Warner Robins GA. While out shopping I noticed a big B-52 kept circling over the town. I asked if anyone knew what was going on. I was told the plane was missing one of the right front tires and the pilot was circling to burn off fuel.The plane was full of Air Force families. I went on base and was able to park in a lot close to the runway. I got out of the car and stood with others as we watched the pilot bring it down as if there was nothing wrong. The only thing that gave it away was the Wingtip outrigger wheel. Because of the missing tire the wing slightly dip causing the wingtip outrigger wheel to come off. Surprisingly the struts held keeping the wing from touching down but it did cause a long gouge on the runway along with smoke and sparks. As soon as it stoped they unrolled the emergency inflatable slide and I watched as the frighten but happy women and children slide down it. Watching that pilot bring that big plane in so beautifully was enough to tighten my chest and bring tears to my eyes.
