In 1986, I worked on the B-1B assembly line for Rockwell international at the palmdale, ca. Factory installing energy transfer systems for the 4 ejection seats that were in each aircraft. At the time, this thing was complex beyond belief!
You may have worked with my father. Electrical engineer inside the wings. His best friend worked on the space shuttle there. I remember going. Amazing at that time. I still frequent the area. - Tim
I watched that from my tent in homebuilt camping after the storm and rain. Amazing to watch it light up the clouds and that "crackle"! Raw power. I can't even imaging how much fuel it is burning.
This is a Dyess AFB "DY" Bone from Abilene, TX. I was 10 when the first B-1B was delivered to the USAF at Dyess in 1985. In the almost four decades since, it's become a normal daily occurrence for the afterburners to shake the entire metro area. I'm sure our friends in Rapid City, SD, (Ellsworth AFB) can relate!
The record is really good. It crackles because of the supersonic engine. The big flame makes a lot of little sonic booms. And we hear this like crackle.
I was a tourist on Ellsworth visiting the Minuteman training silo there and one happened to take off. Was prohibited from taking a picture of it while on base but the sound volume was awesome. Mesmerizing. You could tell this thing meant business. Strange silhouette. Looked sorta like watching a pterodactyl taking off.
That's the sound of the camera's mic audio levels being blown out due to the sheer sound and power of these engines. Especially under afterburner, when they inject extra fuel into the jets to produce more power on top the already insane power of these jets output
What almost made me cry, was when about 10yrs ago the RAAF put on a once in 20yr airshow at our local (and only)airbase - RAAF Pearce - a B1 showed up, they left it sitting all locked up for the entire weekend 😭 Not one single display. Thing is, one of those machines will probably never visit Perth ever again. Unbelievable
Sometimes the enemy only took to caves when one of these buzzed them in the mountains. The earth itself shakes when one of these birds buzzed you. Mustve been a respite for the boys on the ground. And the ordnance was heavy if a second pass was needed. But the B1 is so powerful it rarely took a second pass. One and the message was received. The noise is one they learned quickly. Like several EF5 dropping on you. These birds don't play and they learned. But you can't hear them until they're overhead
Just got a flyby downtown Austin today. The loudest sound I've ever heard. 140 dB easily. Then the knife edge turn right returning to Dyess. Red White and Boner.
I'm not buying the top speed of this aircraft is only Mach 1.25. Engine intake design problems is such a lame excuse considering they have had how many decades to fix that problem? From the blended fuselage and swing-wing design to the four afterburning turbofan engines, to have a top speed barely above supersonic would be a huge waste of taxpayer dollars and I don't think that is the case here.
The original B-1 design went over Mach 2 at high altitudes. I think they limited the top speed at high altitude for the B-1B to get more speed at very low altitudes. We're lucky to even get to see this beast, the program was cancelled and then restarted under different requirements.
The GE F101 has a specific fuel consumption of 2.46 pounds per hour per pound-foot of thrust at full afterburner. At full afterburner, 30780 lbf of thrust is generated, meaning that with four F101s at full power, approximately 303,000 pounds of fuel will be used an hour, or equivalently, 84.1 lb/sec. As of June 1, 2024, the DLA price listed for JP-8 is $4.92/gallon. One gallon of JP-8 weighs about 6.8 pounds (varies depending on temperature) and the effective cost is $0.72/pound. The specific fuel cost is therefore roughly $60/second. This doesn't factor in other costs in terms of maintenance, materials, or labor.
I don't live near any air bases. I remember once an F18 flew low from the north and did a loop and took off to the west flying low with afterburners. Sounded like hell on earth. I was giddy as a schoolgirl!
I lived at Barksdale AFB from 1976-80 and listening to B-52’s and KC-135’s do ORI take offs, just about every plane on base,is a sight to behold. You could feel the rumble inside your quarters.
That's a great point. But if you live in Abilene, TX, or Rapid City, SD, a B-1B takeoff is as normal as mowing the grass! We're fortunate to have such an aircraft in our national inventory.
Wait, you mean a plane at full afterburner uses up lots of fuel? Thank you for that groundbreaking and shattering assessment. It's almost like they take off with a 25% fuel load and immediately hit the tanker for a reason or something. Earth shattering IQ you display here!
Some people don't get it. Full AB sucks down gas like a hurricane, average fighter can keep up for a little while... 3 or 5 minutes... but the B-1B can keep that speed up for a lot longer. Maybe an SR-71 can keep up, that's about it.
That has to be the most beautiful bomber ever built.
Tu 144
Vulcan.
Except... MAYBE... the XB-70 Valkyrie. The stuff dreams are made of.
I like it but UKs Vulcan

That has to be one of the most beautiful departure videos on the BONE I've ever seen!
A plane of that size, at that pitch, and accelerating, it's amazing.
A work of Art and science. Well done the the engineers that built this beautiful beast.
Absolutely beautiful thanks for the video

I’d love to see this thing come back to Oshkosh one day. Fingers crossed
Long time afterburner run. I saw a SR-71 night takeoff with clear sky's never turned the burners off until it eventually disappeared leaving Okinawa.
The sr 71 cruises with them on
The Bad One
Sunset is perfect timing for afterburners
Best B-1B departure I have ever seen
My favorite aircraft ....I've been inside too...
You can say what ever you want, but this is a very special sight! Very impressive as well!
Excellent camerawork!

Love those White Tips!!
If this was loaded to max weight,it's 216 tonns from standstill to airborne in 22-23 sec...that's allot of power😁👍
The Concorde had more power despite having a lower max weight.
Geezus.
"How wide should we make the wingspan?"
"Yes"
Holy fucking afterburner batman!
By far the loudest thing I have ever heard......but frikken amazing
Nice footage, great sound
Afterburner for sooo long ❤
Witnessed these birds light the candle at Air Show London....2021....'20?
I was there. Incredible display and likely one of the longest continuous afterburner passes on film.

Beautiful.
Fearful aircraft. Glad they are on our side.
Yes please!
This plane is like a monster on steroids when it roads in the air
How does the rear part of the fuselage not burn with 4 afterburners on? Beautiful bird!!
Awesome stuff! 👍✈️
Wow that raw powerful GE F102 turbofan Afterburners lit 💥💥💥💥
GE. Maker of lightbulbs, Diesel electric freight engines & supersonic terrain following bomber engines. Boeing too. Thank you Kelly.
Merci
I’ll bet he had to find a tanker to fuel up after that long after burner run.
It's pretty, it's so pretty!
Sounds like a rocket!
I know it's off subject but how many lights on that c130? Wow.
I thought pc12s and dc9s had a lot.
While deployed I watched those take off right next to them in sheer awe. Videos don’t do justice
I wonder how long that after burner can last for.
36 minutes at full fuel capacity (give or take a few mins, depending on each engine efficiency)
Cheers mate. 👍
A fire breathing dragon!
What a beauty
❤❤❤ GORGEOUS, YET LETHAL 💜💜💜
The juxtaposition between the B1to the Herc is amazing! One is everything the other isn't.
"Fully loaded with fuel, ready for take off". "Abort takeoff, we're out of fuel".
WAY RAD! INCREDIBLE!
I've never seen anything like this. Good God!
More fuel was burned during that t/o and climb out than most of the pilot's there do in a lifetime.
Awesome takeoff

Wow 😲 awesome👍
Was there a reason the nose wheel didn't retract along with the rear landing gear..? Just wondering...🤔
He brings it up 3:24 - 3:34
Maybe if there’s a failure the crew compartment is not thrown into the grown?
@@matthewgoodrum9269The B-1B has ejection seats, the B-1A had a escape module for the crew.
Awesome!
That's not the nose gear, that's the canards...
There is not a better way to turn a combustible liquid into absolute awesomeness!
Yes!
I’d say I agree, but the Artemis rocket launch was up there.
MY GOD....................................
I was there, and it was an incredible moment that I won’t forget. We thought there were four fighter jets taking off at once.... not far off
@Holy shit, it's a talking muffin Crazy isn't it.
Instablaster.
ever so often they do touch and go practice here in amarillo, Texas airport from wichata falls,Tx afb she's a big bird for sure.

I hope they get another 3 decades out of those babies.
They're adding something in for the Orange flame. but it's spectacular.
How many G's is pulling on those left handers? damn
The Americans go on about the dinosaur B52 they need to forget about it more of these beautiful beasts they need
We need both

It sounds like a raspy turboprop at 3:50, *weird.*
He's just watching the fuel gauge drop, those burners are thirsty 🍺
LOL especially @ today s prices!

Bad to the B-ONE

that's at sea level. it can be a lot faster at higher altitudes

@@brainandforce Great analysis, this is an accurate estimate.
You would be well pissed off with this flying over your house at 6am every morning. In person behind the engines is immense, the raw power.

That depends - was the base there before I chose to move there? If so, I'd have no room to complain.

theres only one thing bad about the B-1 when it takes off.It uses up a lot of gas.
