The "Disguising your voice" thing is so true. Saying a voice actor is bad beacuse you can recognise their voice is like saying a live action Actor is bad beacuse you can recognise their face.
A voice actor is bad if they can only do the same voice. Having different variations of a voice is not bad, but it is intriguing if you couldn't tell its the same person doing the voices.
Keith David has the same voice for everything he does, and it just WORKS. I can just as easily accept him being a gargoyle as I can accept him being a Seargent in the us military.
I’m a translator and 5:00 happened to me with the Netflix series Daybreak. It was incredibly fun and fulfilling to adapt it from English to Spanish, and I had a blast watching it being recorded and helping the process where I could. No one watched it in any language, tho. And it got cancelled, lmao. But to this day it remains as probably my favorite project I had the chance to work on.
There are a ton of famous voice actors like this tbh. Look through a lot of animes, games, etc. You'll hear the same voice actor doing dozens of different roles, and they are all the exact same voice. Michelle Ruff is someone who immediately comes to mind. I have seen her in over a dozen roles and she sounds exactly the same in each one. Not that she doesn't do other voices, but she has a LOT of roles that are literally the exact same voice.
Will Arnet is 100% recognizable as BoJack. But his performances are still some of the favorites. It really is about the acting more than creating a voice most of the time
I literally always recognize Tom Kenny and Tara Strong but it’s enjoyable for me! Even if I didn’t know I’d go look it up anyway. It’s fun and it’s nice to hear them
Thanks for the Q&A~ You're very talented and versatile. Don't ever doubt that. I wish you great health so that we all can get many more opportunities to hear you voice act.
Pro I just wanted to say you do Amazing work. And I wanted to thank you and everyone else in the Lackadaisy Crew for inspiring me to try my hand at Voice Acting. I missed out on one piece when it was a manageable size in childhood, I'm in for an oversize banquet now that I actually have time energy and willpower to watch it. I should mark off how many days the binge takes. 1000+ episodes......
I love the answer to the first question. Voice acting is acting first and foremost. I think the gut reaction is to think we all need to be like Mel Blanc and have a slew of funny voices to pull from... but none of that matters if you can't act.
To kind of reinforce the one point about “doing multiple voices” look at the guy who voices Kronk from Emperor’s new groove/Joe Swanson on family guy. That guys super famous and he does 1 voice.
Your answer to dealing with comparisons is spot on, no matter the field of work. It's comforting to hear I'm (we're?) not alone in that struggle. Thank you for sharing all of this.
I feel like Takehito Koyasu is a good example of a VA who often does “the same” voice for different characters in things I’ve seen him in, but he’s still a great VA
Thanks for this Q&A, SungWon, it was very interesting, especially your comments on working with the engineers, directors and other actors. I've directed one or two minor voice localization projects when I still worked in games localization and it's always super interesting to hear about the experience of people who are waaaay deeper into that work than myself. Look forward to your future roles, mate! 😎
Keep up the amazing work on here and all the stuff you get to voice for!! Voice acting has been something I have been interested in since I was like 5 playing Jak and Daxter for the first time, and even if it isn't my main occupation in life, I really want to voice characters in media. The one thing I enjoy about myself is my voice, and I hope when I get the time, money, headspace and etc, I can dip my legs into the world of voice acting
I'm surprised my question ("What would you say are the biggest misconceptions about voice acting?") was worth asking, as I know little about voice acting. Thanks for the Q&A, SungWon!
My question for the hopeful next Q&A: how do you communicate with your directors especially if there's something you're insecure about when doing takes or the project in general? Especially not to sound rude

10:45 I do think there's a healthy balance. While you should certainly be content with what you have, you should also always strive for more and dream big. At least I think. Ambition is good. Just, while youre getting there, dont feel like a failure.
How much consistent work do you get as a voice actor? PT, FT? Do you feel well/fairly compensated? Considering this field, but could use some advice and information.
Also for any TTRPG folks who want to try voice work/acting, try playing Dungeons and Dragon (DND). If you play with a good group, they’ll encourage the voices and acting. I’m in four different campaigns where I’m a human soldier with a British accent (not good haha), I’m a tortle barbarian who speaks very slow, a Giff (humanoid hippo) paladin with a southern U.S. accent, and a young adult Wizard who’s a coward. And I’ve definitely gotten better at doing the voices through practice and experience. And I’m not even pursuing voice work. And none of my friends are dicks about our terrible acting and voice attempts haha.
Ah dang, I missed the Q&A opportunity. D: I've always wondered whether it's viable to do voice acting only as like a "part time" job. Basically I've always thought about maybe giving it a try, but I still have a regular day job I wouldn't want to give up necessarily. Is it possible to do both, sustainably, or does Voice Acting require full time commitment to stuff like practice and training in order to actually be worthwhile?
3:43 tip 100%! Some examples of this are the clones from TCW series. All same voices but completely different personalities you almost feel like theyre voiced by a different person sometimes lol or even South Park and Rick and Morty.
Has there been a role you’ve recorded and subsequently forgotten about, and then independently played or watched the finished product? If so, how did you feel your performance?
13:06 so I dont want to be a voice actor but a game developer... but that description sounds like how game development probably is, at least from my experience. Ive tried to find a paid job but with just an associates in game design ive been more or less out of luck in that area, only taking on volunteer roles here and there. Never made a cent off my work. But, hey I still got time, ill get a bachelors in computer science soon enough and that'll make sure I get *some kind* of programming job, and one day it'll be on a videogame. I think I have the discipline to do it, im kinda crazy about game development in that way youre talking about.
Another question for a hopeful Q&A: do you ever find yourself dealing with moments of anxiety and burn out? how do you cope with that what are some methods that you do to overcome them?
Recognizing a voice actor because they've only got one or two voices that they do is only a problem for people who watch/play a vast amount of things. It doesn't apply to most folks. I kind of find it breaks my immersion a little when it's a voice actor whose real life face and name I know, because then I end up thinking about them as the person instead of the character, but I also recognize that it is 100% a me-problem.
I came here so quick to ask. How do I get voice acting work, like even if it’s small works I wanna start something genuinely because I’ve been hyped up to voice act but I don’t even know where to start
The place I started is Casting Call Club. I’m still on there after a year but I get a few roles almost every few weeks or so. It’s almost all amateurs and newcomers as well, so you learn alongside people
Regarding getting a cold, is it common for VAs to use colds to deliberately alter their voice? I ask because I know this happened on TOME. One of the creator's VA friends got a cold, so the creator messaged them and got them to record some narration real quick before the cold went away.
"I can recognise the voice so it's a bad voice actor" is such a dumb take. I can recognise normal actors like Paul Rudd or Chris Hemsworth or Keanu Reeves from movie to movie, them being recognisable between movies doesn't make them inherently bad actors.
23:00 best example I could think of is the Xenoblade 2 english voice acting across the board. No emotions whatsoever. When the character screams the actor doesn't. It feels like they're just "reciting" their lines and not acting out the lines. This prompted me to just switch to the JP dub. XC3's eng voice acting improved though which was actually impressive.
Crazy that there's not a single question on AI. As a (visual) artist I hoped to get your view on the topic, since it's something that arguably affects every creative profession.
Asking for a friend amiright? :P Took some digging to find out, but it's Nami from One Piece and you can find the figure by searching "One Piece Flag Diamond Ship Stampede Flag Nami" or similar.

Regarding getting a cold, is it common for VAs to use colds to deliberately alter their voice?
I ask because I know this happened on TOME. One of the creator's VA friends got a cold, so the creator messaged them and got them to record some narration real quick before the cold went away.
I have a question, are you the guy who voices Eagle in advance wars reboot camp?
"I can recognise the voice so it's a bad voice actor" is such a dumb take.
I can recognise normal actors like Paul Rudd or Chris Hemsworth or Keanu Reeves from movie to movie, them being recognisable between movies doesn't make them inherently bad actors.
6:50 “Is it fun?”
_Yeah._
Please do another Q&A with Anne Marie!
Do you ever lose a character voice midsentence? Happens all the time to me. I don't know if I'm stupid or what.
A kid with the voice of a grown man crazy.
Screw learning how to voice act I want to know how to make friends
I do weird voices alone in my house does that make me a voice actor?
have u ever played maple story? :0
my first experience doing voice acting is when I do amateur stage plays.
0:16 no disrespect but Google Career Certificates made a show 💀
Crazy that there's not a single question on AI. As a (visual) artist I hoped to get your view on the topic, since it's something that arguably affects every creative profession.
what view is there? It's horrible for every creative profession to try and replace humans with AI wholesale. No room for argument.
@@dizzydaisy909 absolutely. I just wanted to know if he had any like... good way to handle it :( cause ive been struggling sometimes
Careful what you demand, eh?
Voice acting has always been a dream job for me but im afraid that the industry will become mostly ai voice acting in the next few years
My prediction is there is like 30 ones asking what characters his are
When i played gow ragnarock i kinda felt wierd when i heard the squirril. And i realized it was YOU. HOLY SHIT

Who's the red-headed character on the bottom-right shelf, just at the edge of screen? Thanks
Asking for a friend amiright? :P
Took some digging to find out, but it's Nami from One Piece and you can find the figure by searching "One Piece Flag Diamond Ship Stampede Flag Nami" or similar.
@@auxiliaryboxes You, my friend, are a god - just for maturely responding to my question. And I WAS thinking of adding, "asking for a friend", but didn't think I would get any responses. Cheers, from Canada.
Have you watched Viva La Dirt Leagues bad voice acting video?
Are you part of any union?
I saw your doppelgänger in London a few days ago wanted to say hello but if it was you wanted to respect your privacy if it wasn’t you then then they person would think I was crazy if I said “ hello are you on UA-cam and try diffent foods”
