Meet Your VCR (1982) - ua-cam.com/video/57epZF0ubJQ/v-deo.html
The ABC’s Of Your VCR (1990) - ua-cam.com/video/SyVO1zgccpA/v-deo.html
Are you unfamiliar with pinning comments?
It’s been pinned twice already. YT is doing something funky. Re-pinned.
A VCR that can support a compact car is still a good investment, I say.
I was going to say, the first VCR we ever owned, if you tried to kick it like a football, you'd break your foot.
My cat was sitting on my leg and watching your video with me. When the video segment was over it switched to you behind the box, my cat thought you were playing with him and he started to look around the box when he realized that he can’t enter the CRT television I watch Roku on.
A vhs tape that teaches you how to use a vcr is like those old DVDs where Inspector Gadget teaches you how to use the dvd remote after you already used the dvd remote to select him
The notion of a video tape of how to use a VCR gives off "You Can't Do That on Television" vibes when an actor was given the microfilm copy of instructions on how to use a microfilm viewer. Lol
Unfortunately it's the hapless viewer who's left saying they don't know, then next thing they know they're covered in green slime...
😉
Joan's got that early 80s fem-mullet that Christine on Night Court trained us all to go wild for.
Markie Post… I had such a crush on her as a boy. RIP.
Both videos highlight the difference between the 80s and 90s: the 1982 video is straight-faced, the 1990 video is ironic.
The diagram at 3:13 is WORSE than imagined. The want you to attach your VCR to a POWER POLE! 🤔
...and after I come home from testing a load of VCRs in my volunteer job, I get to see this. 😆
The riff on the second tape was MST3K class!
Dot Warner, pre-Animaniacs...musta been lean times for her to do a straight video with Joan Lunden...
Dot: "Eh, it was a job."
😉
The riff game was really strong with this VHS vault! I had some literal laugh out loud moments watching this - considering that I enjoyed “This History of VHS” sub series, I knew I’d enjoy this! Well done!
"Yes Billy, there will come a day when you want the commercials" had me dying.
I hardly ever catch your videos this early being in the land of oz! 🇦🇺
Usually don’t comment much but I think I’ve been here for at least 7-8 years! Just wanted to leave a note showing my appreciation for what you do Ben 🙌🏼 Your channel is like a little nostalgia bubble to escape too every now and then! 😊🦘
Meet your VCR looks like something the Red Letter Media guys would cover
Wait..why did that woman collapse on the floor at 5:23?
Extremely low-imapct aerobics, I guess...
Tales from the QuaDead Zone ref? Nice one Benny Boy.
I was the one who had to figure out the VCR at my house. My uncle always confused settings on the remotes between the VCR, cable box and the TV.
Her cartoon sidekick Emanuel looks like a depressing rendition of Ralph Wiggum and Dot is like a dollar store brand Tinker Bell.
Manuel looks like he was animated on an Amiga with Deluxe Paint methinks :D
For what it's worth, it was done on a Dubner CBG (kind of a competitor to the Quantel Paintbox).
@@OddityArchive Considering that the First Video is from '82, I would imagine that Dubner and Osborne for that matter would have be both Vic 20 and IBM Competitors. Amiga didn't launch until '85.
How to hook up your VCR (On the VCR you're watching this tape on)
Proceeds to spend 20 seconds showing an overview with poor drawings. Couldn't even be bothered to show the back of a typical VCR, the different potential connection types (VHF/UHF screws, F connectors, RCA connectors, etc) or how to identify inputs and outputs, find Channel 3, 4, or 91...
4:48 There's my childhood kitchen TV again! Still got that model, grill is course as hell.
5:24 my parents had that exact blender!
16:56 😂 the boy mouths “ WHAT AN ASSHOLE” haHA!!
Lmfao, "hooray" for low-key, lazy almost-but-not-quite-racism, circa-1990. Though I do remember when I was in Japan for the first time in 1996 and my host family's VCR broke, we had to summit Mt Fuji and brave the fires within to get a new one. Just kidding. We went to the local version of a superstore and picked up a new VCR, Sprite and Frosted Flakes, then rented Babe, Jumanji and Godzilla '95.
Reminds me of a video from a while back, "Billy's dad is a fudge packer" .
"Make the clock flash 12:00 like a true professional" LOL😊
If you want to read something really funny my brother got a fisher price tape player for kids in 1982 and the instructions for how to use it were on a tape that came with it so basically you had to put the tape in the player to listen to the instructions for how to use it thus make them useless. LOL
The tape's line about "adding your own soundtrack," after your riff about inappropriate stock music, could not have happened at a better time.
As someone who has had at least four VCRs in his life (the latest being an antique shop Panasonic which I think is from the late-90s/early-2000s era), this is kind of unhelpful for somebody who has only watched VHS tapes (I have two Betamax tapes, but no VCR for them)
Hot dog, Joan was a POA back in her day
Yeah, I was too young to realize she was smoking hot. Looks like a young Taylor Swift, but hotter.
20:02 Fun fact: *West* Germany no longer existed in 1990!
20:02 Gold Ben, that joke was effin GOLD! I laughed for a whole minute! I had to go back and watch that minute again
Joan's real last name was Blunden. Look it up.
another great one benny boy
Day 1 of asking Ben to do a 3rd emergency broadcast salute
I’m proud to say I have BOTH these tapes. Was really excited to find the ABCs of Your VCR as I expected a straight depiction of the time it was made but the whole 50s thing made it a dud in my book.
I have most of the tapes that came with Zenith VCRs in the mid-80s that show you how to use them. I imagine those just further confused those who didn’t understand this stuff.
That second tape is the worst example of 1980's detached ironic Baby Boomer humor I've ever seen. Abusively so, and done with absolutely no talent. It feels like one of those old Nickelodeon adverts for one of those Nick at Nite shows they aired during the day. Just one that went on far too long after the gag died.
Nickelodeon was pretty keen on this sort of thing from 2003-2004.
I guess since I'm a boomer I do find the 2nd tape somewhat amusing
@@tamaraclawI knew I was somehow a boomer at 21 lmao
Is the "documentary" having some random clueless kid named Billy a reference to something? The simpsons made basically the same exact joke.
It was typical of educational films in the 50s.
The second tape - is THIS all the "sex on tv" adults were complaining about when i was a mere slip of a girl?!
Videos on how to use a VCR? Sounds like something produced by the Department of Redundancy Department.
"If I can use the CDi, I know anyone can. I can't even set my own VCR".
Nooooo, how dare you talk over these nostalgic gems with legally protected and on-the-mark commentary. How else will I learn to make the front display of my VCR stop flashing 12 o'clock?
Edit: I should also feel bad about unironically laughing at "tape-a screwuppa", but it's so Looney Tunes.
11:36 She looks like Sulley from Monsters Inc
Manny look like he's from a computer program.
Wait, is that a rusty trombone? 😁
15:59
Is that Corey Burton as the narrator?
Yeah, it Sounds like him. I think it Really might be him.
@@Tornado1994
On a second listen… yeah that’s him. It’s simply surreal to hear him on something not Disney.
Did Joan Lunden admit to watching bootlegs?
Too bad the good doctor didn't teach everyone to keep the commercials intact on all off-air recordings, the world would have been a lot better for it!
I wish my family had done that, but then we lost all our tapes anyway
And not buy mono VCRs in 1985 or later!
@@TheMediaHoarder And also "Why VCRs shouldn't have come with Pause buttons!" RIP Crazy Eddie 1977 ad!!!
@@DanZero77 "His Prices are Insane!".
I mean, it goes without saying, but the "Japanese" being spoken in that one segment is uhh NOT actual Japanese (and I'm just a white lady who is teaching myself the language lol). The yikes jumped out
10:09 Provably and irrefutably untrue with other videos on this channel alone.
My immediate thought is why does she have a trombone stuck to her wall? Aren't you supposed to have a special case to keep such valuable instruments in? And then there's the other long horn placed across the mantelpiece that seems somewhat superfluous, to say the least. Still, we all know it's not a real living room. It's only a set made to look like one. A bit like this video made to look like it's instructional when in reality the only purpose it has is to state the bleeding obvious. I assume this is one of a series on, 'how to', do things. Like the paperback that instructs how to read books; a single vinyl that explains how to play records, and a radio show on how to tune in a radio to a specific station. All rather redundant, to say the least. At least the video is short..
The second video is about a decade too late, but at least _looks_ a little more professional. The attempts at humour doesn't really work, though. In fact the entire video doesn't work. It doesn't explain anything as such other than to not abuse the machine and keep your tapes clean/tidy. Something most would do anyway, having spent enough of their money having bought the thing.
19:54 Having those letters consecutively in my name, I take personal offense to that terrible abbreviation and this terrible script. 😒
Lol wow :)
The second video is A level cringe.
you have to do better with you graphics you should use a better back round than the back of a cardboard box
50s nostalgia ripoff, horrible 'ironic' humor, casual racism... that second tape had it all!
The second hand shame I felt from that video was almost too much.
