Wow, that "Prince" stereo ad really shows off why Prince was never going to let Weird Al do a parody song of 1999. He was essentially doing the man a favor, so he wouldn't be embarrassed writing lyrics for "$19.99", LOL.

23:05 - This was apparently a NYC massage parlor, pretending to be a jewelry store to get around zoning laws set up to keep massage parlors from operating. From a 1978 NY Times article - "Investigators attached to the Midtown Project said that the proprietors at the Lucky Lady, at 121 West 45th Street, used display cases and cubicles labeled “fitting and viewing rooms” to justify their assertion that they were in the jewelry business."

19:32 "Allied Discount Tires". If you've not seen it before, there's a version of this called "Allied Discount Wine and Cheese". It's on youtube, filmed around the same time, possibly on cable access. Other than that, I have no idea where it came from or why. But it's earwormed me for the better part of two decades. Whenever someone mentions cheese, I automatically respond "Cheese ain't nothin' but dried-up old goat's milk".

I have loved this channel for a great while now, and I am more and more impressed that you keep finding strange, niche oddities to display and dissect. This series reminds me a lot of the classic era of Mystery Science Theater 3k, specifically with Joel, because it exudes that homegrown charm and comedy, examining and joking over old random out-of-production products and media. This series (like MST3K) is really timeless to me.
Every time I tune into an episode I get increasingly astonished that it isn't more popular. Obviously its not being done for popularity, but great content should be rewarded with it. I can't describe how much admiration I have for you and your work. Thank you for for years and years of entertainment.

4:31 Never knew Fat Tony was in the window business
5:06 Fun fact, the electronics chain Silo once ran a newspaper ad offering a stereo system for "299 bananas", "bananas" in this case being obscure slang for money. Allegedly, some people actually showed up to stores with bananas, and they were forced to trade merchandise for bananas, resulting in them losing $10,465 (though the news media probably exaggerated what happened to sell more papers).
7:39 Daily reminder that Stan Freberg got caught up in a lawsuit Prince filed against the makers of Prince spaghetti (a local brand from my home state!) over an ad
9:46 Nice to see Pee-wee Herman's forgotten brother Schwee-wee. The one even Jambi doesn't want to talk about.
14:41 Bob's, where LARPers, silent movie comedy actors, cosplayers, mimes and Cirque de Soleil performers eat free!
20:07 Man, the Beastie Boys were really lame in their early days. And did Ben just reference Gwar?

You gotta give credit to the Cheech Marin impersonator in that one commercial. At least he sounds and kinda sorta if you squint hard looks like him. Unlike that dreadful Pee Wee impersonation or the charisma free Linda Carter wannabe. And they're still better than Max Headroom. Even the signal intrusion guy was closer to matt Frewer in that.

The guy doing the Cheech impression I guess is pretty well-known in Canada (and does a ton of impressions). I'm throwing a flag on "Lucky Lady." No way did that go out over the air - not even in 1978 Manhattan. Maybe... MAYBE... on one of those cable channels from the days before corporations stepped in to bring order to the chaos.
On an unrelated note, did anyone else think the guy asking the boss where he got his suit was weirdly short and slim? Like a young teenager made up to look like a young adult, maybe? I'm a pretty small guy myself (only 5'4" and 130 lbs), but that still jumped out at me. Maybe the point was that his suit didn't fit him right...

Nice to see an old add for Super Sash window company. I guess they never made it in the US. They did a really nice job replacing a friend of mines windows on his home in Birmingham, England in the UK. Car City is still in business sorry, Ben. Their located in Wyoming, MI. They have the best collection of classic cars for sale. Hope you father is doing well Ben. My father is he has his good days and bad days.

After 3 years Benny boy got more local ads!
Yes the store is called Badcock but now it's "Badcock & More". Hopefully not what they were selling in the last ad.
I'm also glad Allied Discount Tires finally showed up! The pitchman was one Sam Behr who also owned his own shoe store in the Tampa Bay area. He made national attention for a short time in the late 80s when one of his ads was parodying televangelists of the time period. He died in 2013.
Plus you gotta love that Canadian Cheech/Ernest knockoff!
Hopefully we'll get Vol. 5 before OA does retire!

Was there some kind of obscure law where local commercials could just steal music? Like the Cheech commercial with "Lowrider" or the dance studio one with multiple songs in it. Did they just get away with it because the people who would care enough to sue just never saw them? I would think even local, small-scale video makers would know that was a potential legal hassle.
The same goes for just flat-out stealing the Samurai SNL thing. I guess, it's kind of a parody...sort of...not really...
