- Here is a full video showing how to diagnose engine noise on Chevy and GMC gas trucks. Most common is valve lifter failure. That's what we found on this truck. Shows complete procedure with torque specifications.
Did this myself in my garage like a month ago to my personal vehicle but I did the new cam and non dod lifters with the tune. Runs like a dream now 🙏🏼

@@danfoley6920 Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center. they have everything you need and everything is oem parts. Don’t forget to order a separate thread cleaner for the head bolt holes because your new threads have new thread lock.
Was it hard ?? How did you torque down everything with a digital torque wrench or them other ones ?
@@esau5.3 it’s definitely an intensive job for someone like me that doesn’t work in a shop. But just have a good amount of knowledge and MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED TOOLS AND ALL THE RIGHT PARTS BEFORE YOU START. And aslong as your motor never overheated in the past I doubt you’ll need to get the heads resurfaced.. I didn’t need to it’s still running strong ever since. I used click style torque wrenches I rented them from auto zone and then I got one of the compases for the bolts that need to be turned a certain amount of degrees for the heads. Make sure you clean all mating surfaces very well and use common sense. Move at a good pace that’s not too stressful. Have a couple drinks play music and definitely get a second pair of hands if you have the chance. That makes everything in the world easier when taking the heavy heads off and holding the exhaust manifolds in place to be bolted down when you’re getting ready to finish
@@danfoley6920 scoggin Dickey auto parts bro make sure you get everything you need. They have front cover gasket sets and make sure your kit comes with a brand new balancer bolt. Also make sure you get a thread chaser for the heads. The old ones leave thread locker in the block and you don’t wanna mess with that when you can get the chaser for like 40 bucks
It’s a lot of work. Had number 7 intake lifter fail. It was 1200 in parts and materials to fix it. I have built these motors, but much harder to do in the truck. I definitely wouldn’t recommend sand paper on the block or head. Scrape with razor blade then scrub with brake cleaner and a microfiber cloth.

Be aware that the 5.3s often will have destroyed cam lobes from inadequate hardening and/or defective lifter rollers.
Yes they will damage the cam lobes if the customer keeps driving it for awhile and doest get it fixed asap.

Heads up for anyone doing this to the drivers side. One headbolt is a 13mm allen socket, confused me for a second due to not having an angle on the bolts outside cylinder 2.
How many miles on this engine? It was super clean inside. Obviously, the lifter did not fail because of poor maintenance.

Easy to gauge aluminum heads with a metal blade if not careful. Use gasket cleaner and a plastic blade(they sell plastic razor blades) if you have not done this before and are comfortable using a razor nlade

I have a 2008 Silverado with 350k did pretty good with it. 5.3 with exactly the same issues. Why doesnt GM take care of this. Costs around 8gs to fix it. Changed my oil every 3gd or less moble 1. Im sure that helped the engine big time. But a very very poor design to say the lest just to save a few miles on gas. No need for it.
INSANE Government EPA mandates drove it, CAFE standards for light duty trucks average MPGs had been relatively unchanged since 1984 at around 20mpg. Then starting in around 2006 Demoxrats pished EPA to annually start jacking it up about 1 mpg per year. For TRUCKS... Manufacturers had NO choice or they would been fined thousands $ per vehicle produced or forced TO STOP building full size trucks all together. Thx DC swamp rats. Thus we have AFM setups and now a days these small turbo engines in trucks. It will get alot worse the next 10yrs. Get ready...
Not to mention most people who have disabled the arm have found they had the same if not a tiny bit better miles per gallon. Pretty sure when they tested it to gain government approval of their epa “enhancement” (or whatever it was for) they just drove it up the road 4 miles and back. That won’t give the overall mpg picture
It is supposed to be 1st torque to 20 lbs then 180 degrees then 170 degrees . So being it's a 15 model maybe it has changed
Hopefully you see this but I’m coming to see any videos make sure everything is good right but I went ahead and changed my head gaskets and resurfaced my heads. When it came down to torquing my head bolts I put a washer in the top bolts only and torqued it down to 59ft lbs then the 90’ but didn’t do the 60’ right after I didn’t know about that one. Opinion?
The lifter is not colaspe as if the spring had broke or even weakend. No the inner valve is stuck . Most likely the front half of the VLOM are lose
I wish my lifter was stuck, but alas, it was the lifter guide that failed 😣
I would've liked to have heard the engine run with no extra noise. My 6.2 suburban is in Chevy in yonkers now lifters and they told me that have to replace the whole engine. Luckily I saw videos like these and I heard the metallic tapping the first start up in the morning and I went to them to check it. First day in there they said they heard no noise at first start. I said that's weird I hear it and phone recorded it and its every morning. Then next day they heard it. It took them 2 1/2 weeks to get a gm inspector to verify the issue now they said I am getting a new engine. Luckily it was 4 months before powertrain warranty expires 5 years 60,000. It would have cost me 15 gs to do myself.

Thank you for your video. I recently bought a new GMC Sierra truck two weeks ago, and it made a noise that led to a repair for a lifter issue. It has only driven 1400 km since, but I'm concerned it might break down again soon. What do you think?
Don’t worry too much. I have 185000 miles on my 2016 Sierra with the 5.3 and I have never had a problem. Number one thing with these engines is keeping up on your oil changes. I do every 5000 miles religiously since new and I never had a problem. Only thing I had replaced under warranty was a passenger side front wheel bearing and the A/C condenser. Otherwise it’s been a solid truck.

How accurate does the tightening have to be? Is that entire process of 59.0 lbs, 90° and 60° necessary?

1. NEVER use sandpaper to clean ur head. Use a scraper a rag and brakleen.
2. Idc if you wasn't having issues before. Always have the head checked at a machine shop.
3. Did i just watch that man reuse the old head bolts 😬.
They are TTY bolts and not advisable to be reused, but if not stretched, they are fine to reuse. I've done it with no issues to date, always inspect the bolts and threads before reusing.
How can you tell if the cam has been damaged. I also pulled a bent rod.
Put all new lifters guides and lasted 300 miles came is out.

Not replacing cam, you're just wasting your time.
2 things: How was the camshaft? Bolts stretch. Does GM require that you replace all the head bolts to prevent breakage when reusing the same head bolts?
Always replace head bolts.
I've reused the OEM plenty of times with no issues, but reuse only once. ARP bolts don't get replaced.
Use a die grinder, grind a line perpendicular to the threads on old head bolts make a chase for free. No sandpaper please.

If we delete the afm, auto start/stop, VVT, brake vacuum pump, and convert the suspension to normal shocks, it’ll be solid!! Hahahaha the good 5.3s and 6.0s are either too old or too ugly. Get a nice new body at a reduced price because of the failure and do the mods and you should be set for 300k miles with proper maintenance!
My 2015 gmc yukon denali xl is having the same issue and the dealer its my valve lifter and probably camshaft that need to be replaced and quoted me a price of 15k.....i wish could bring my truck to you
Dealer is always expensive. A good mechanic can do that for way less depending the country its in.
I have a similar issue with my 2015 Suburban. And they asked for 12k too for me. That’s a rip off. If you can help me get this baby running new. How much would you charge me?
i just did it to mine, cyl 7 damaged lifter, i just payed 200 buks to remove head did everything else myself spent like 300 on parts 🤗
So I assume it is safe procedure to only do one side of the engine it that is all that is needed?
might as well do them both in pairs. why wanna tear all that work again if the other side fails a year later

Have repaired and rebuilt ALOT of engines over 35yrs. These GM engines are SO easy to work on, seriously. And they pretty forgiving in shade-tree workshops 😎👍.... UNLIKE these newer DI turbo charged 4- banger all aluminum engines I've rebuilt last 5 yrs.. totally temperamental piles of 💩
What sand paper did you use to clean the head
You shouldn't be using any. Unless you're getting the heads jot tanked and surface checked/decked afterwards.

I have a 2016 chevy suburban In the process of changing out the fuel injectors, I dropped the tip of an injector into the injector port.Any ideas of how to get it out without taking off the head
You might have to pull the head. My heart goes out to you. Everything on these trucks is difficult. Where you able to get it out? 🙏🙏

That is correct. But I've done it this way and works very good everything and no problems.
Experience is key here. You remove gasket residue, not head material, but it's easy to screw up if not experienced.

In the old days that would have meant that the camshaft was worn out but in today's crap. It's a technology failure. Just as big of a job as replacing the cam but the parts fit in a smaller box !!!

All depends which shop or dealership you take it. Anywhere fron 2 to 3000$
What’s process if I just need to do the push rods?
Pull the valve cover. Remove the rockers. Remove and replace push rods. Reinstall rocker arms to 22ft lbs. Reinstall valve cover, and reconnect plug wires and coil pack connectors.
Chances are you have bigger issues if you bent a rod. Replacing rods only with no other upgrades, is useless.
Plastic razor blades are made for this job
