  • A five minute video illustrating how to precisely adjust an EIZO ColorEdge monitor’s appearance with EIZO's ColorNavigator 6 software in order to achieve a more accurate visual match between the appearance of the image on screen and as a print. If you are working with ColorNavigator 7 please see our companion video Advanced Soft Proofing Monitor Addendum covering the same procedures with ColorNavigator 7's new interface. Last updated 04 April 2017.

Wow man! great. How I wish that monitor! But 2000 euros for the 1440p, although it's worth every penny, it is really a lot! Gorgeous! Thank you.

Where would a test paper like that be available for different kinds of paper?

I deliver photographs to magazines who print on coated paper. I would like to be able to predict and optimize how these turn out. I would love to know more about how to obtain this level of control. Do you know any resources to read/watch?

Hi Les when you photographed your 24 patch test card in order to compare the image with the actual card, did you photograpgh the card under the d50light ? Regards. Walter Moore. Sydney

Nothing was photographed - there is no need to because I am not comparing an actual ColorChecker Classic target, but my print of a synthetic image based on averaged M0 measurements. And that is the whole point of advanced soft proofing a particular print path (i.e. media/ink/printer/RIP). Follow the link in the accompanying notes to download a synthetic ColorChecker 24 step target, encoded in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, if needed. All the best.

Interesting. But what about the light in the room? How do you set it? What kind of light is used? Does it have the same influence in the monitor and the paper?

I have added a link in this video's 'more' section to our Support/Notes/Printing webpage where you can find our Lighting theory paper that hopefully it answers all of your questions.

Dear Dr. Walkling, thank you very much for your videos. I really appreciate all of them!
I have a question about this one: how did you print the colour chart? i mean did you print it applying the colour profile of the paper you used? Thank you very much!

Hi Nicola, you are most welcome - please see the Show More section where I provide a direct link to our website and the test target file that you then print through your profiled print workflow.

@@leswalkling Thank you very much! So, if I understood correctly, I open the color target file (that i downloaded from your website) in photoshop and print it with the colour profile of the paper I am printing on (i have a calibrated eizo cg2700s following all the step you mentioned in your tutorials). Thank you again!

@@nicoladellaquila4834 Hi Nicola, that is correct. And as you are viewing the image on a wide gamut EIZO ColorEdge screen use the ColorChecker 24 step AdobeRGB Target. This process therefore takes into account your working and viewing conditions, your adaptation to them, the characterisation of your print path, and the software you are printing from. Therefore the closer your working conditions are to our ISO 3664:2009 recommendations and the more accurately and eloquently your print path (ink, media, profile, printer, software) is characterised the easier it will be to achieve improved print to screen matching, when that is your aim. My Lighting Theory paper, if you have not already found it, may also be helpful in this regard, and can be found on our Theory of Practice website: www.leswalkling.com/printing/

I was surprised that you did not mention the light source for viewing your printer paper. I may be a little dated, but I've been using an Ott-Light for viewing to compare to my soft proofing. Are the Ott lights passé now?

Please scroll down in the show more section for the link to our Lighting Theory paper. Standardised lighting has undergone significant changes in recent years which is best addressed in notes that can be quickly updated rather than remaking the same video over and over again. I'm sorry but we have not tested the Ott-Light so have no basis for evaluating its suitability in a proofing environment.
