Cultural Heritage Video Production
The purpose of this video is to provide some initial guidance on how to apply the intent of ISO/TR 19263-1 to video production (Photography - Archiving systems - Part 1: Best practices for digital image capture of cultural heritage material). Though it only begins a discussion it nevertheless hopes to inspire attempts to achieve a similar degree of video imaging accuracy possible in the digitisation of two-dimensional works with digital still cameras and flat bed scanners. Test footage courtesy of The National Gallery of Australia.

Amongst all the social and political anomalies of our world, what doesn't seem to shift of waver is great art - though we might come to reconsider or reinterpret it as time goes by - what has managed to get 'under our skin’ keeps burrowing ever deeper.

      Nothing was photographed - there is no need to because I am not comparing an actual ColorChecker Classic target, but my print of a synthetic image based on averaged M0 measurements. And that is the whole point of advanced soft proofing a particular print path (i.e. media/ink/printer/RIP). Follow the link in the accompanying notes to download a synthetic ColorChecker 24 step target, encoded in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, if needed. All the best.

      Please scroll down in the show more section for the link to our Lighting Theory paper. Standardised lighting has undergone significant changes in recent years which is best addressed in notes that can be quickly updated rather than remaking the same video over and over again. I'm sorry but we have not tested the Ott-Light so have no basis for evaluating its suitability in a proofing environment.

      @@nicoladellaquila4834 Hi Nicola, that is correct. And as you are viewing the image on a wide gamut EIZO ColorEdge screen use the ColorChecker 24 step AdobeRGB Target. This process therefore takes into account your working and viewing conditions, your adaptation to them, the characterisation of your print path, and the software you are printing from. Therefore the closer your working conditions are to our ISO 3664:2009 recommendations and the more accurately and eloquently your print path (ink, media, profile, printer, software) is characterised the easier it will be to achieve improved print to screen matching, when that is your aim. My Lighting Theory paper, if you have not already found it, may also be helpful in this regard, and can be found on our Theory of Practice website: www.leswalkling.com/printing/

    I just started printing with a Canon Pro 2100, in a properly set up environment and with a profiled Eizo monitor. I'm still discovering the different kinds of (Canson) papers, and so far, I've made prints using the general profiles Canson provide. I've tried the Baryta Prestige, Platine Fiber Rag, Printmaking Rag and Rag Photographique and the colors match the screen pretty well. As I get more used to printing, I'm sure I'll move over to custom profiles once I settled on the papers I like best. As far as the Baryta Photographique II Matt goes: I thought the Rag Photographique was smooth, but the Baryta Photographique Matt is even smoother. I really like the results I'm getting (although I prefer the soft feel on the non-printable side of the rag paper), if not for the green cast I'm noticing compared to the other 4 papers I tried, obviously while using the same image. Are there known issues with the Canson profile that could explain the issue? I've watched one of your other videos on the paper classification (M1 measurements), and if I understand correctly, while the Rag Photographique paper is indeed more magenta than the matt Baryta (which I can see under D50 lighting), the difference in the a* channel between Rag Photographique en Baryta Prestige is even bigger. And between these, I don't see a color difference in print. So, at the moment, I'm a bit at a loss.

    • @OrelRussia

      How would you rate the Platine paper against other Canson papers you mentioned?

    • @dieterjehs9659
      @dieterjehs9659 2 роки тому

      @@OrelRussia In what way? There are so many characteristics to papers ... At the moment, I used the Rag Photographique and the Platine the most, almost exclusively for colour prints. In a sense, I guess I could limit myself to those 2: the Rag Photographique for more dreamy or abstract shots that don't require punch, and the Platine for a more traditional photographic rendering. I like them both for black and white too. The Printmaking Rag seems to be something for very specific projects ... I haven't used a lot of other papers yet, so in time, my preferences could/will change. I do prefer the sumptuous feel of a rag paper though.

    • @OrelRussia
      @OrelRussia 2 роки тому

      @@dieterjehs9659 thank you for such a detailed reply! I was always leaning to baryta type inkjet papers, thinking they resemble traditional photo papers more. As far as I understood the Baryta Prestige is the best byrata paper among the Canson papers. However, then I came across with the Canson Platine paper. So my question was mainly devoted to these two papers and maybe the ordinary Baryta Photographique

    • @dieterjehs9659
      @dieterjehs9659 2 роки тому

      @@OrelRussia I think 'best' in terms of printing paper is rather relative. Sure, some will be better than others technically (as in, their performance checks more quality boxes), but in the end, paper choice depends on how you want to match image with paper. As I understood it, the prestige has more contrast (deeper blacks and whiter whites), but Platine allows for better separation in the midtones/greys. I haven't been printing enough on the prestige to verify the midtones/greys claim, but the higher contrast of the prestige is correct. So in the end, and among the best papers, there will still be a trade-off.

    Hi Les. Thanks. There is little in term of learning material with concrete examples about 3D Lut Creator on the Internet apart from the official videos. Thanks god, there is a Howard Grill Photography who does put tutorials online. Otherwise we have to rely on our personal experience. That's fine, but it takes somewhat longer. It looks like a lot of people who start showing 3D Lut learning videos, stop doing so after two or three videos only, although they promise they would publish more stuff online. I wonder why. Is it because it's too difficult to learn even for them (it definitely has a steep learning curve), or is it because they want to keep the software a well guarded secret? ;)...
