Minor correction: Dothraki do take slaves, mostly from other Dothraki tribes to be used as servants. In fact, Irri and Jiqui (two of Dany’s handmaidens) are slaves taken after Drogo killed their father and his Khalasar.
And The Mongols had a blatant disregard for slavery in their homeland, and they valued artisans, intellectuals, scholars and other religions because it was culture which could be traded.
In Romanian "khal" ( that is the pronunciaton, it is actually written "cal" that's why they are kind of similar) translates literally in "horse", i just noticed that and i couldn't keep quiet😂
same here. greyjoy's semi-mythical forefather grey king killed craken called " naga" which is kind of snake nd mythical creatures lives in sea just like crakens.
As usual, Take videos dropping knowledge bombs left and right. I love that observation that the Dothraki are up front in their ways, without the pretense or facades that characterize everyone else on the show. And I love that Robert Baratheon was the only one who knew what was up: Don't F with the Dothraki. And Viserys was a great sniveling little villan in those early episodes. Kinda miss him.
I wish I could say "Thank You" in Dothtraki, but there's no such word in this language. So l'll just say in Common Tongue. Thank You, for this incredible content, The Take. Also, I have the feeling the Free Folk might be the next analysis subject. Can't wait for those guys to meet the Dothraki. Can you imagine?
I feel like the Free Folk would bond much more easily with the Dothrakis than the rest of the Westeros does. They share a lot of similarities with their honesty, bravery and spontaneity.
Now I'm sad there wasn't a Dothraki that spoke the common tounge in the room during e2 for Tormund's story. I think whoever the Dothraki was, they would have made a friend for life.
If only they had a small thing called Hydrogen Peroxide, Khal Drogo would be alive right now. Like Stewie once said in a Family Guy 'Little House on the Prairie' cold open, "A small cut is a death sentence in these times".
This is probably my favourite video on Game of Thrones I've ever watched. The magical strength of Daenerys and the physical strength of Drogo. Powerful stuff.
Actually a horse herd is not led by a stallion. It is led by a mare, which makes Dany’s leadership even more righteous. (Wikipedia: Contrary to popular belief, the herd stallion is not the "ruler" of a harem of females, though he usually engages in herding and protective behavior. Rather, the horse that tends to lead a wild or feral herd is most commonly a dominant mare. The mare "guides the herd to food and water, controls the daily routine and movement of the herd, and ensures the general wellbeing of the herd.")
Before watching this video, I had the typical Westorosi opinion of the Dothraki -- uncivilized savages who are good at fighting. This is coming from a long time fan of the series, aa well. But thanks to this video, I realize that I've never paid attention to how deep and interesting the Dothraki truly are; and also how much they bring to the table in terms of helping shape the amazing story that is of a Song Ice and Fire. Thank you.
This just made me remember how Jorah was with Daenerys ever since the beginning, guiding her and comforting her. He really was such a good man who deserved more.
Arguably Jorah Mormont's coolest fighting achievement was besting that Dothraki near the end of season 1, using his armor effectively against his opponent.
Ricardo Conde 15-20 thousand dothraki hopelessly outnumbered against a hundred thousand wights. Charging against an enemy they have little knowledge of, that too in complete darkness. Not even sure if they were given dragonglass to begin with.
Even being outnumbered, I think the force of Dothraki should have lasted a few minutes more, and taken down a chunk of the Walkers before being overcome. Not snuffed out in the first instant of contact. And, with Dany having SEEN that horde beyond the wall, I'm certain she told them exactly what they were facing. That said, they probably didn't believe her...
I have always preferred the groups in game of thrones who are honest about what they are and what they think this includes Stark, Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, Martell, and of course the Dothraki! what do you think?
The Tully are the least honest people with exception to the Black Fish. The Martell's are duplicitous to Borgia levels, in the BOOKS ONLY. The Arryn and Dothraki live more off reputation than tangible prowess. The Tyrell's are a curious case as most of their power comes from Randyll Tarly being the best general in Westeros. The Manderly's also obfuscate weaknesses yet clearly are anything but. Strong Belwas is probably the best example of a character who is honest to a fault.
Have you noticed the similarities between the Houses and Peoples from Game of Thrones and the astrological signs? For instance, the Dothraki and the Targaryans share many similarities with Sagittarians, both metaphorically and in personality. Other examples are: House Tully with Piscies, House Arryn and Baelish with Lybra, House Lannister with Leo, House Martell with Aries, House Tyrell with Taurus and Cancer, House Frey and the Brotherhood Without Banners with Gemini, The Free Folk and House Hightower with Aquarius House Stark with Capricorn, The Night's Watch with Virgo, House Greyjoy and the Iron man with Scorpio
Doran's actor Alexander Sidig is a scorpio while Oberyn's actor Pedro Pascal is an Aries. Perhaps it's a mix of the two. But I see the Greyjoys as more water-like/maleSociety scorpios while the Martells as hot-headed but faire Aries capable of resisting Targaryens. The Greyjoys/scorpios don´t care about faireness.
8:45 How interesting that Aegon I used Westerosi heraldry to show he’s one of them, leading to further acceptance of his conquest, while Viserys neglects to learn that little piece of history when marrying his sister to a Khal.
I dont know what is it about this Channel, but it always brings out strong emotions for me. I feel like the music, the tone, and just general appreciation of the subject is why i keep coming back. I get excited to view and experience different perspectives of things that i already enjoy with a better philosophical understanding. Thank you The take, your hard work is appreciated.
After watching the final season of Game of Thrones, you can also include the Dothraki's ability to respawn after apparently being annihilated by the Army of the Dead.
I hope you can do a take on Mance Rayder. I’m absolutely fascinated with this character who managed to unite all the free folk and make them all work together.
Horse fact check, horse herds are actually lead by the lead mare(s) not the stallion. When traveling the lead mare(s) is in the front leading the herd while the stallion is protecting from predators at the back.
A horse herd is often lead by a stallion - anyone who actually works with horses... no a heard is lead by a Lead Mare the stallion just helps defend the herd and keeps other stallions away.
The Dothraki will not survive the long Winter. Perhaps many of their numbers will live through the fight, but their culture cannot survive Westeros. Or the invention of pikes.
@ EXACTLY! They would no longer be Dothraki. well, some would say they were, some would not. An ideological battle within the Dothraki would probably be the best hope for Westeros. that and Pikemen.

You rather conviniently skipped the parts that does not support "noble savage" idea. 1. Their livestyle is purely destructive, they do not grow anything, build anything and live out of what they steal from people who do. Mirri Maz Duur was painted as a villain but she was right and that was leason for Daenerys. Ends does not justify the means and while you may romanticise what they do, people on the bussiness end of the Dotheraki horde do not. 2. Their society isn't productive in any other way. They have some basic arts and craft but there is no intelectual growth among them and they don't care about outside knowledge. Despite general believe there is no natural wisdom we distanced ourselves from but less advanced cultures understand. Yes, they know a lot about riding a horse and killing villagers and people with no armor but what else but superstition do you expect out of people who thing digging in the ground hurts it? There is no purpose, no evolution of ideas, they just live from day to day like animals. 3. Daenerys learned from them, they didn't learn anything. She has their loyalty because she knows what they respect but they are still the same as they were when we first met them. There is no peaceful coexistence in the Westeros waiting for them after the war is over. They can either go home or completely abandon that culture you like so much. Well, unless writers pull out another "Wildlings" out their asses and pretend the giant mass people, all belonging to different tribes that hate each other and who joined only out of need turn into drunken bros the moment they cross the border. 4. Realisticaly speaking, they are too primitive to be such a force they are portrayed as. Only kind of army they have is light cavalry, only tactic they know is to charge. They don't have anything to penetrate armor so heavy infantry or cavarly would be extremely effective against them. They don't have any technology, so they can't siege anything with a palisade or better around it. They see themselves as superior to anybody so they don't negotiate, make alliances or have any other political influence. Yeah it's fun to dream about different and exotic cultures, riding the horses into sunset but reality is cruel and you wouldn't want to live there for 5 minutes, especially as the unlucky girl being ganggraped in the mud surrounded by corpses of your family.
I agree completely, except the fact that you would only love to be there if you were as strong as achilles or hercules, after all no place on planetos is made for a good life unless you are strong enough to be respected, depending on what kind of strength is needed.
Khal Drogo *DID* show gratitude very clearly, when he offered Jorah a horse for saving his Khaleesi's life. Not like they don't have a concept for these things, they just express themselves with actions rather than words.
*"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east," said Mirri Maz Duur, "When the seas go dry and the mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before."* The thing that killed me the most with the final season of GoT is that this prophecy that promised the reunion of Daenerys and Khal Droggo was actually meant to take place in the afterlife and not irl like we all foolishly thought it be since freaking SEASON 1 fml :-(
10:18--Yeah I always felt there was something really wrong about Danny not realizing what she was inviting when she encouraged Khal Drago to be her Champion. He literally says that he will rape and pillage for her. --& she gets turned on by this...
I always find myself connecting to the "savage" races in media- the Trikru of The 100 and the Dothraki being one of my favorites. This video made me appreciate them more than I did before. you were right when you said we respect their openness. Every one of the nations is savage, but only one culture refuses to hide that aspect behind pretty lies.
But at least the Westerosi and the Free Cities *try* (and fail) to maintain peace. The Dothraki, on the other hand, wage war continuously since they consider war to be a goal in itself.
I never realized how perfectly the Dothraki symbolized the greater message of the show and avoiding "othering" - awesome analysis as always!! Here's hoping they get a big role in the final season. Also - you guys should definitely do an analysis of Stephen King's "Pet Sematary" next! Especially since the new one comes out this weekend, and I'd love to see more stephen king movie analyses.
Aaron Landry So I see. Only the writers said "what we see here is, essentially, the end of the Dothraki", when speaking about that episode. So it was all very confusing.
Tom Dp I guess he meant in terms of importance to the story. They were there for King’s Landing, but didn’t really do much in terms of story, because Dragon’s Fire is more destructive
To be fair it looked more like one "regiment" of riders instead of the entire army. But it was still moronic battle tactics to just ride straight on. In fact the whole battle was moronic.
Ned wasn't wrong. The Dothraki were no threat so long as they remained Essos on the other side of the Narrow Sea and thanks to their well known fear of water their horses wouldn't drink, he had no reason to believe that they'd be crossing that sea anytime soon.
I like the fact that dothrokis are shown as openly brutal and war-like. People of westeros are in no shape or form better when it comes to ethics and they have no moral high ground as far as I'm concerned. But they're able to hide their savagery behind facade of good manners and customs. I also loved Khal Drogo as a character, and i believe he truly loved Danny. He treated her like a queen (when he didn't have to).
Indeed. Rather than divvying up the credit, I think we all can agree on one thing: Among the living, nothing in that world could stand up to the Dothraki AND a dragon. Nothing.
SEASON 8 SPOILER She says : the Dothraki could make a big difference against ( for an example ) the white Walkers . The battle aganst the white Walkers : the Dothraki get killed in minute 1 😅😭😂😭😭
As a tv only fan, the Dothraki have had a special place in my heart since season 1 buuuuuut I dunno if the army of wights has anything to fear. The Dothraki hate the cold and can have a bit of hubris at times so the chances of a victory are 50/50 imho
To be fair, the Lannisters had to fight a fully grown dragon as well as a horde of Dothraki. Dothraki can only win if they can break an enemy through a mass charge and arrows. If they had to face an enemy that is well organized and disciplined enough to withstand their repeated attacks, then I think the Dothraki would eventually give up and run, like how the Unsullied defeated the Dothraki long ago.
The Grey Area is what made Game of Thrones the masterpiece it is. In fact, Martin created a world which had spectrums of black and white, and no one fell in either of the extreme ends. That's why I prefer the books to the TV series - that level of subtlety and immersion is only possible inside books, no matter how grand the CGI is.
Did she mention the reason they call the ocean, the “poison water” is because if a horse drinks the water it dies from the salt, just as we would. So they say it’s poison. I love it! 🐉🐺🐉🐺🐉🐺🐉🐺🐉🐺
Thanks to your videos my respect and admiration for GoT and specially George RR Martin has risen more than you may think when you create these breakdowns!
Come on the Dothraki had a dragon at their back and caught the Lannister Army off guard and had the high ground. Lets not mention they were heavly out numbered going against cavalry, just food for thought.
That's the whole point of being a horde, numerical superiority. This wasn't a jousting competition nor a duel, it was war. Prepared or not, the ferocity of the Dothrakoi, their versatility in melee and ranged combat on horseback, lies @ the heart of their success.
The wild energy, beauty, and ferocity of the Dothraki women was something I really thought was what made them incredibly unique to other female characters (despite them being minor). I just wished this had been expressed more and letting the Dothraki having been perhaps a matriarchy (as some Native American tribes were in the past and still are, if I've read/heard some stories right).

Whenever I look at the dothraki, they remind me of the mongols under Genghis Khan. He united and led the mongol to expand their empire.
A Random Brotherhood of Steel Paladin khal=khan? Both groups value strength and promote on the basis of merit.
Other than the mongals has armor, good weapons and tactics.
Which the dothraki lack
And The Mongols had a blatant disregard for slavery in their homeland, and they valued artisans, intellectuals, scholars and other religions because it was culture which could be traded.

In Romanian "khal" ( that is the pronunciaton, it is actually written "cal" that's why they are kind of similar) translates literally in "horse", i just noticed that and i couldn't keep quiet😂
Interesting!! Thanks for the info! Here's your horse 🐴
@Terria Hexxor Thank you.
In German "kahl" means bald which would be the biggest nightmare of the dothraki. 👨🏽🦲
In my country khal means penis 🤭
same here.
greyjoy's semi-mythical forefather grey king killed craken called " naga" which is kind of snake nd mythical creatures lives in sea just like crakens.
Yes Viserys deserved better ✊😔💯
Viserys is like the Loki of GoT to me. A misunderstood character that would've been good if it wasn't for his sad life.
I wasn't expecting this one.
Half of us weren't.
I was.
I even suggested it in their House Arryn video.
A suprise, to be sure, but a welcome one
Now I wish they had made room for a scene there. Sad, really.
If only they had a small thing called Hydrogen Peroxide, Khal Drogo would be alive right now. Like Stewie once said in a Family Guy 'Little House on the Prairie' cold open, "A small cut is a death sentence in these times".
They do have alcohol at least, also I'm pretty sure Mirri Maz Duur intentionally infected his wound.
@@saljpal3 that and in the books he got cut deep enough to lose a nipple

This is amazing.
That's extaclly what khal drogo did for dany. He opened his mind for her even tho she is also "other"
Arguably Jorah Mormont's coolest fighting achievement was besting that Dothraki near the end of season 1, using his armor effectively against his opponent.
Todd Bollinger was the
I don't find this impressive. Any knight in armour could have done that.

15-20 thousand dothraki hopelessly outnumbered against a hundred thousand wights. Charging against an enemy they have little knowledge of, that too in complete darkness. Not even sure if they were given dragonglass to begin with.
@@Amityt0791 F
Even being outnumbered, I think the force of Dothraki should have lasted a few minutes more, and taken down a chunk of the Walkers before being overcome. Not snuffed out in the first instant of contact. And, with Dany having SEEN that horde beyond the wall, I'm certain she told them exactly what they were facing.
That said, they probably didn't believe her...
They respawned in the end
I have always preferred the groups in game of thrones who are honest about what they are and what they think this includes Stark, Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, Martell, and of course the Dothraki! what do you think?
the lannisters are very honest about the fact that they are all about gold and power
@Christopher Yu the boltons pretend to be a house filled with northern honor, but we know that untrue
@Christopher Yu the boltons are very deceptive if they weren't Roose Bolton would have never gone along with the red wedding!
@RheyaRu!z besides cersi who's not honest with themselves. and that characteristic of cersi make her at odds with the rest of her family
Have you noticed the similarities between the Houses and Peoples from Game of Thrones and the astrological signs?
For instance, the Dothraki and the Targaryans share many similarities with Sagittarians, both metaphorically and in personality.
Other examples are:
House Tully with Piscies,
House Arryn and Baelish with Lybra,
House Lannister with Leo,
House Martell with Aries,
House Tyrell with Taurus and Cancer,
House Frey and the Brotherhood Without Banners with Gemini,
The Free Folk and House Hightower with Aquarius
House Stark with Capricorn,
The Night's Watch with Virgo,
House Greyjoy and the Iron man with Scorpio
Ooooh I love this but the Martells are Scorpios for sure👏🏻👌🏼
Doran's actor Alexander Sidig is a scorpio while Oberyn's actor Pedro Pascal is an Aries. Perhaps it's a mix of the two.
But I see the Greyjoys as more water-like/maleSociety scorpios while the Martells as hot-headed but faire Aries capable of resisting Targaryens.
The Greyjoys/scorpios don´t care about faireness.

How interesting that Aegon I used Westerosi heraldry to show he’s one of them, leading to further acceptance of his conquest, while Viserys neglects to learn that little piece of history when marrying his sister to a Khal.

Do Avatar the Last Airbender! Love the videos!

The Dothraki will not survive the long Winter. Perhaps many of their numbers will live through the fight, but their culture cannot survive Westeros.
Or the invention of pikes.
They don't need to stay in Westeros after helping Dany

Great Video!! You should do the Free Folk (Wildlings) next
Yes the Dothraki are very brutal in war, but not more so than Westerosi at war.
Then he will return, and not before."*
The thing that killed me the most with the final season of GoT is that this prophecy that promised the reunion of Daenerys and Khal Droggo was actually meant to take place in the afterlife and not irl like we all foolishly thought it be since freaking SEASON 1 fml :-(
Rip the dothraki :'(
marvel096 Why? The Dothraki are horrible, evil, cruel and savage.
“Your people can’t fight.”
Gotta love those guys. Pure backbone!!
"The dothraki will pose a problem for the White Walkers."
Well, that didn't prediction didn't age well!
This was a great idea for an episode. The cultures in ASOIAF are as rich and fascinating as the characters themselves. Great stuff as always.

Only to see them brought back 2 episodes later
Tom Dp Not all of them died at Winterfell
Aaron Landry So I see. Only the writers said "what we see here is, essentially, the end of the Dothraki", when speaking about that episode. So it was all very confusing.
Tom Dp I guess he meant in terms of importance to the story. They were there for King’s Landing, but didn’t really do much in terms of story, because Dragon’s Fire is more destructive
To be fair it looked more like one "regiment" of riders instead of the entire army. But it was still moronic battle tactics to just ride straight on. In fact the whole battle was moronic.
😻😻 I don’t 100% agree with every thing you people say in these videos but I sure find 100% of it interesting and love 100% of it!
This might actually be my favorite video about GOT on youtube. Your vieeos are constantly getting better and better. Keep it up. 😊
Ned wasn't wrong. The Dothraki were no threat so long as they remained Essos on the other side of the Narrow Sea and thanks to their well known fear of water their horses wouldn't drink, he had no reason to believe that they'd be crossing that sea anytime soon.
Wow I remember requesting this! Thanks guys 🙌🏽
Dothraki Symbolism = SUPER HOT
I like the fact that dothrokis are shown as openly brutal and war-like.
People of westeros are in no shape or form better when it comes to ethics and they have no moral high ground as far as I'm concerned.
But they're able to hide their savagery behind facade of good manners and customs.
I also loved Khal Drogo as a character, and i believe he truly loved Danny.
He treated her like a queen (when he didn't have to).
I'm a simple man, I see an Office reference, I hit like.
I loved the Dothraki they was one my favorite characters on game of thrones
No love for the Lannisters, but that dragon had a shit-ton to do with their defeat against the Dothraki.
Indeed. Rather than divvying up the credit, I think we all can agree on one thing: Among the living, nothing in that world could stand up to the Dothraki AND a dragon. Nothing.
The real life comparison to the Dothraki would be the Mongols or the Huns.
They have no word for thank you because in their culture you gotta show your thanks not just weakly say it like we do

As a tv only fan, the Dothraki have had a special place in my heart since season 1 buuuuuut I dunno if the army of wights has anything to fear. The Dothraki hate the cold and can have a bit of hubris at times so the chances of a victory are 50/50 imho

update danny has just lost her dothraki to the night king. it was like a light snack for him and his horde of undead zombies.
The Lannister army was holding their own against the Dothraki. It was the dragons that kept the momentum going.
i'd like to think the words for the Dothraki would be, maybe, "Strength Leads the Herd".
They do not pose a threat to the white walkers.........
They were wiped out , even with their weapons flaming.
They also apparently reproduce via mitosis because there is no way mor than like 5 survived the battle of Winterfell
The Dothraki and the unsullied are by far the best and most badass and fearsome warriors in the world of game of thrones.
I always wonder if you can revolutionize the Dorthak like the Mongols
Did she mention the reason they call the ocean, the “poison water” is because if a horse drinks the water it dies from the salt, just as we would. So they say it’s poison. I love it! 🐉🐺🐉🐺🐉🐺🐉🐺🐉🐺

That was simply beautiful. I love that theme--appreciating the different. Thank you!
I waited for this particular one for a very long time. I'm extremely pleased to be able to finally see it.
I don't think the Dothraki would be able to fight that well up North.
Don’t even need to watch it fully.
Amazing video!
