Hi Laura you are using lots of red flowers lately..Are you ok?! Lol 🙌🏼
I have the same bug. I NEVER used hot colors in the past. Last year I went with some huge red proven winners begonias. Now I'm hooked!
Hehe
That is exactly what I noticed, as well.
Change is fine.
Lol
I am loving it!!!
🤣
You’re killing me Smalls! 😂. It’s torture not seeing the second pot! It’s like Big Bang Theory and not finishing the third knock on the door. Hahahaha
I’m such a fern loving person and this one is beautiful! The contrast of foliage with pops of COLOR is perfect in this pot, makes me think of Aaron. 😊
Gorgeous fern. While it looks beautiful, was I seeing that it needed you could’ve split that fern and put part of it into another container?

Love, love, love the arrangement!
OMG that fern is beautiful!!! ❤
Love that you used a fern in planter and under planted it too. So colorful and eye catching
Love this shade combination. The fern is beautiful! I really need to get my shade containers done, so thank you for the inspiration! Hope y’all have a great weekend! 🙌💚🌿🌿
Beautiful, every one of your containers are my favourite til u do the next one 🇮🇪😆❤️
Beautiful pot, loved the plant choice combination, I’m marveling over how gorgeously green and lush the background is in this video with the swaying weeping willow and the deep thick carpet of grass in the image, so inviting and wonderful, you never cease to amaze me with how well done your videos are and how much information is packed into each episode, both with verbal content, links and pure happy sharing! Great job Laura and Aaron!
Gorgeous fern! the impatiens and ivy will do well with it. I think that coleus will become a bully and take away from the fern.
I love this! Living in WA State near Puget Sound, we just don't get much sunlight in our garden. I have so many naturally occurring ferns and could translate your container recipe to our landscape easily! I was looking at Impatiens because we are suffering through "May Winter" here...ugh. I look forward to your videos and thank you so much for all of your great ideas!
I sure noticed those ferns in the garden center tour & I saw that you loved them too. This container is outstanding. Hope the impatient,s hang in there. So pretty..Q-Can you explain the difference of using biotone & not PW slow release in this pot.thanks.
When you "winter over" that fern plant, what does that mean? Keep it inside over the winter? Could it be kept in a garage?
So beautiful .. a very unkind person told me a few days ago why do I waste my time on my projects they will eventually die off ..it really saddened me that it's not always about the aesthetics it's about the journey, the project , the closeness to the creator, the accomplishments the failures, the victories.. that's why I watch your channel you want to express YOU. .. it's our life and how we express it is ours alone .. and I so get that in you .. and THAT is why I love your channel, your accomplishments , your passion .. thank you again ..some folks just don't get it I guess ..🤔
Perfect timing. A friend just gave me those ferns and I have a shade porch so I am going to do your arrangement. Those urns look like concrete. Inspiring!
I think that color combination is FANTASTIC. The red tones work, in part, because the fern is so big and so much lighter.
The fern is beautiful! I like that the glacier ivy is a perennial and can be used in future seasonal arrangements. 👍🌿 Looking forward to different/gardening projects on the new property.
Such a beautiful container! I live in zone seven and I would like to try something similar. When you say “winter over” do you mean you bring the container into your cold frame or do you just leave it outside all winter? Thanks, Laura and Aaron. I love your channel!
Oh my goodness that’s beautiful. I have to say this is one of my favorite containers you’ve ever done.
I am so in love with this. Before I found your channel I used to be so upset that my property is all shade. Now you give me great ideas thank you .
I Absolutely Love the fern. Have you ever thought about doing a video on how you do your weekly fertilizing. I would find it very interesting. Thank you so much for sharing so much knowledge with us.
"That's not how we do things here" LOL Laura!!
My neighbor has this fern planted in his yard it grows very tall and it is beautiful but it multiplies fast.
🦋The fern is spectacular. The warm floral compliment and ivy is perfect. A violet flower accent with the ivy and fern would be pretty too. Whether it’s cool or warm, you created container perfection that can go from now to next season and even beyond. It’s all about the fern🌿. Smart planting! 🦋
This is a stunning combination! But question: are you not connecting your containers to the drip system this year? This is the 2nd container I’ve seen you plant this season where you didn’t install drip tubing before planting. As you dumped (and ate 😂) the soil into the container I said “Wait! What about the drip tubing?!?”. Was that intentional or did you just forget? Thanks for all the uplifting videos!!! 💚🌸
Ostrich ferns spread quickly for some people and more slowly for others. They’re super common around here in Minnesota and in northern Minnesota. I just planted some I got from a neighbor yesterday.
So glad to see a pro gardener goof up. Makes me realize I’m not so different than a pro. All it takes to garden is heart!
So, if you were leaving the fern and ivy to winter over and then next season just pop in a few annuals again, how do you treat the soil to prepare for the new season with plants already in the planter?
Sometimes you use proven winners slow release fertilizer and other times espoma biotone in your pots. How do you decide?
While I can’t quite answer for Laura, (I know for myself and having watched many of her videos) I know that Bio-Tone is for supreme root establishment. With that being said, (while that’s always a focus for anything being planted) I think for perennials, shrubs etc. that’s a MAJOR KEY in the success. They don’t need the fertilizer every week like annuals.
She has said recently that she uses the biotone for all perennial planting and the proven winners slow release for annuals. Since the ivy and the fern were perennial, that’s probably why she opted for biotone.
In short, there’s really not much of a difference, at the end of the day a fertilized plant is going to do better than one that isn’t, they’re General purpose so it’s not like one is going to have a drastically different effect on your plant compared to the other
Laura West, I was wondering the same thing, however, I use Bio-tone every time I plant any thing...in ground or container, perennial or annual. After hearing Laura say she uses the slow release fertilizer I've started doing that also in my containers.
Can you please explain why a certain plant might be zoned lower with a maximum of zone 7? I understand why plants might not make it in certain climates with too cold of winters to survive but I confused on why this plant wouldn't be ok in warmer places like zone 8 and up?
Very nice video😍😍😍
Just gorgeous! 🥰 I was planning a container for shade with either just a large fern or hosta but now I am going to need to try this! ❤️
I'm so much inspired with your gardening skills. Your garden is a wonder. 😊
Love these shade pots. And I like the very good choices
I love your video and i am is your subscriber ☺️
Beautiful ferns and the contrast is a great combo. Thanks!
Sometimes you use PW slow release and sometimes you use BioTone starter... did you use BioTone because you had a perennial in this one?
Oh my gosh..I have recently found your channel and it is a game changer for me...I want to redo everything I have done to date. You are so inspiring and am learning so much...you and your mom are a flipping riot ( I saw the two of you trying to back up the truck for the trailer) I laughed so hard, my husband came in to check on me. I look forward to all of your videos. Thank you for the inspiration and education....off to buy bug and slug " food" for my any issues.
I just bought a hosta from a local woman and an ostrich fern had roots inside of the hosta's rootball, so I ended up scoring big time! I planted mine in the landscape (zone 7b). This is my first year with a larger shaded garden, and your channel is a super inspiration. Thank you!
Could you please do an outdoor succulent arrangement?
Love this channel!
Oh I love this combination! It is just gorgeous! I have ostrich ferns in my back yard next to my house foundation and they drown everything else out. They are so aggressive. Maybe the European are not a problem like mine. By the way I took cuttings last year of a coleus and some impatiens and I am growing them as house plants. The impatiens have been blooming for a month now.
Love this video!
This is the combo I do every year here in western Washington! I have had my ferns year round for 10 years now! Impatient’s do very well here and I just change the color f them and the coleus each year!
Omg, the ostrich ferns are practically invasive in my zone 5 garden in Michigan.... would give you as many as you want! Lol
I am an enormous fan of Impatients, especially for containers on my shaded porches. I do not crowd them in a container as I do other annuals. Maybe that is the secret! I was thrilled when my local garden center had the Impatients from PW. I never thought of using them in the landscaping. I wish you the best of luck with these this season! 🌱❤
Can you explain how you would winter over the fern and the ivy? I have similar containers and am wondering what I will do when my zone 6 winter hits! ❄️ 🥶
Laura have you tried sunpatiens? They love the sun and shade. I’m growing them for the first time in Salem Oregon zone 8b in pots. There are three types. So far their doing amazing. There is compact, which I planted, trailing and vigorous. Proven Winners has them, also they are drought tolerant. Again always enjoy your videos. 🥰
Love the Ostrich ferns, always have loved them. BUT... here in the Southern Piedmont of NC they will run like crazy, popping up all over the garden, and they are not slow about it. Best to grow them in a container here.
I agree about what you said about this fern...and I am in zone 5 in central NY area...took over a entire shade bed... thanks for letting everyone know this.
🌿💙That arrangement will make the “shade” ...SHINE!😍Are there any glorious shade trees?💙🌿
Paint them white! They will look beautiful! 💕
We are lucky enough to have ferns all over our property here in Vermont. LOVE the fern in this pot, so going to go dig up some ferns from our forest and do the same thing. Thanks Laura!
My friend, you really inspire me. Thank you!
I love this shade container, so so pretty! I have lived in the Northeast, Southeast and high desert (Boise area). I have grown the most fabulous impatiens in both Eastern homes and they were fabulous. Boise? not so much. The prolonged heat there and in Eastern OR is just not what they love so they really can struggle there. This container will like your porch but still not sure it will love the heat! Good luck!
they don't like south Texas either. I've tried so manny times but they're done by june, geogous for spring tho.
I live in Spokane and can not grow impatiens either. They never make it long!
This was a great container idea. Just a question. I’ve got a deer and they love to target impatiens. Any suggestions for alternatives?
Begonias.
I love ferns. One of my all time favorites. We have lots of them at The Cobblestone Cottage.
This one looks so dramatic and fabulous!! 👍👍👍
Love how the container turned out but I was totally distracted by the kneeling pad! Is that two pads stacked on top of each other or one really cushy one? My old-lady knees need some thick padding these days.
This arrangement is absolutely gorgeous! I have never really liked ferns but WOW! I think my mind might’ve just changed.😍
Hi Laura that’s such a beautiful combination
I have a question: is the slow released plant food only for proven winners flowers or could u use them for any flowers?
Pretty, nice contrast! Good luck with that fern in the wind looks like it may topple that container over. Btw 2 kneeling pads? Knees ok?
Red is definitely a main colour theme this year and I'm here for it! 😁🌹
You are such an inspiration to me! I am always learning from you! You mentioned that you could winterize the container for next year. We are in Zone 6a to winterize does that mean you just leave the container outside? Do you bring it in to a protective area... can you please educate me more on what to do? Thank You
I love ferns and just recently had to remove my ostrich ferns due to them spreading all over my garden. I planted one and within one growing season I ended up with 21 new ones. If you don’t have an issue with ferns popping up everywhere you’ll love these. I live in zone 6b and they winterized great. If I were to plant these again I would only do in containers. They will get very big and beautiful.
Thanks for the video, we are moving from a city lot with barley any trees to an 11 acre fully wooded property and I’m completely lost on what to do there. This helps!
Gorgeous! But if that’s anything like the ferns I have (looks exactly the same) they will take over given enough time. And in the summer heat they start looking rough. But in spring they are glorious!
Laura, that’s beautiful! Love the colors combination.🧡💚
That is one of the prettiest arrangements I've seen! Man, if nurseries could make planters like this, they'd sell like hotcakes.
I’ve not had a lot of success with ferns. They tend to dry out easily. Do they need more water or more humidity. I don’t know what I am doing wrong. Love that fern. Need to find locally.
That fern is Gorgeous!!!! Hey Laura, how would those resin urns work up on your balcony for weight control?
I Love the Double Impatiens. I think they look like miniature roses. Beautiful container.
pretty combination and great you can pop that fern out if you choose and plant in the garden in the fall... that ostrich fern has some age on it , my it is big.. ❤
Beautiful arrangement! I wish I had a shady place for something like this. Just curious, why did you use starter fertilizer in this container rather than the slow release you typically use?
I officially have watched all your videos.... More then once. My favorite part of youtube is Laura
Awesome inspiration! Love how long you can use the fern. Colors look so nice together! 🍀
It's gorgeous--that FERN ♥♥♥ I'd like to see this arrangement without the coleus.
WOW...this his fantastic...Loooove it soo much!!! Thank You LAura ... I have a lot of shade!!
The contrast is amazing!! I LOVE this!
Really amazingly gorgeous! Will the annuals cause the fern to brown out on the bottom and/or have bare stems?
That fern is lovely and already could be split as there were new offshoots that could be pulled out. Great money saver when you find a plant like that. Thanks
That arrangement is super gorgeous..the fern green and the impatient colour pairs up perfectly..love it Laura
How do ferns do in your area generally? Do they need more water than a lot of your other plants?
Lol. I was just window shopping early this morning @nursery...I was looking to create SHADE potted whatever (not a green thumber..lol)...and here you are! T y! I needed this. Lol
That is a really beautiful container!
Quick question - my patio gets a couple hours of morning sun and then it’s in the shade for the rest of the day - I’m assuming shade loving plants would still be ok as this sunlight isn’t too harsh?
hi Laura. You are my go to site. Unfortunately, once I sit down and start viewing, I cant stop.... ( is that a bad thing?? NOT)
I have planted Ostrich ferns thinking they would be great under my red maple, intermixed with small evergreen azaleas. Holly molly, they were stunning in the spring. Light, bright green as they were coming up. Then leafing/branching out to almost 40" x 40". sadly, Loosing their bright green. BEWARE they are extremely invasive. they send runners everywhere! i have cut off the babies, and passed them off to anyone who wants them. I live in Vancouver, BC so ferns love it here. Fast forward two years....... I have pulled all of them out. Far too invasive.. I have kept a couple for pots.
A super nice ( ALTERNATIVE) evergreen fern is DADD's FERN Great shape, with a frill on the tip of each branch. Same size 36x36 I would plant many of these, Hands down!!!
Keep up the great work!!!
Absolutely Gorgeous. I had I believe, Lady finger ?, Cinnamon something and Christmas something. In my garden on the north side of my home in SLC. They grew 4 x4 on the second year. I had Shasta daises next and Susan O Day front and Baby Breath tucked here and there. It was stunning. We went on vacation for two weeks and upon returning all ferns had been STOLLEN. Broke my heart. Never planted them again. I worked so hard and babied them. I sometimes talk to my plants....Yup one crazy old lady. But...... there is something to that. Try it, they grow better if you care. Where I live now, I doubt I could grow any kind of fern. Zone 8 hot and dry. Any suggestions??????
Love your work and channel.
I have not found any Bio-tone (?) down here in St. George, Ut. So I have gotten Miracle Grow....hope it works. Love ya lots. (My strawberries just croaked....maybe I should have put the pot in the shade? Next year?
Thanks again. Smiling
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS CONTAINER!! it's another one I'd like to create. However I'm in zone 9 so it may not work, what is your advice Laura?
Oh wow...love that 💕 love that fern, so pretty. Love shade arrangements too ...got lots a shade in my tiny garden 😝
How would you winter over?
Wow that is a beautiful arrangement! I love Ostrich ferns and have several. They are very dramatic in their growth habit. If they love their home, they grow to 6' and do spread.
Beautiful! At first I thought oh no, just use the fern....but you knew best!😁
Yes, very beautiful!
Like your shows. Just started watching…..very informative.
This arrangement and fern are absolutely stunning! Great selection!
Oh my gosh that container is absolutely beautiful I love the combination of the flowers the colours is beautiful one of my favourites excellent
Hi Laura , I never knew what color looks good up against a Coleus but this color is beautiful the orange! Thank you for this information , So beautiful!!!! Cause I want to try Impatients with Coleus. 🙂 TY 💚the videos.
I used to grow BEAUTIFUL impatients, but over the past few years I have had terrible results growing them. I have tried new pots with all new soil, but nothing seems to work. They just rot away. Hope you have better luck than me. I wonder what I’ve done wrong.
Hi Laura,
This fern is a gorgeous one........but watch out it spreads by runners fast! Everywhere! But the good thing is they pull up super easy. I have many in my landscape. I live in Vancouver,BC (zone8)I have also passed several on to novice gardener family members and they are thriving. They can take afternoon sun, but lose the vibrant lime green, and become a little washed out. But one of the most beautiful aspects of this particular fern are the fiddleheads in the spring.. they are very upright, vase shaped and regal. I cut off some of the lower branches to keep the vase shape. Otherwise they are huge. A stunner!,
How about white Oliveri Impatiens, they get very tall and are hardy. Socal Garden Centers have more plants from Monrovia, compared to Proven Winners. Lowes-Home Depot have very few Proven Winners and private Ma/Pa nursery centers can not afford PW Stock, just toooooooooo $$. Would like to see some white glazing applied to the pot finish, to bring out the character of the pots finish
Add few white twinkle lights in to the dirt level of the pot, it will soften the plants at nite, ground lites are awesome in pots.. Variegated pothos would add charm to the cascading plants.
Hi Laura, I live in zone 3/4 area in a very windy part of the city. How would you recommend weighing down a container so that it doesn't topple over on a very windy day? I've contemplated just rocks/stones but just not sure if that's the best way to go about it. TIA!
That so pretty. Off topic...Laura do you know if Bonide Bug & Slug will hurt the birds? So many are feeding babies right now but I’m concerned about how safe it is. Thanks
Oh, I’m inspired now! Beautiful! Thank you👏👏🤗
