I'd say it's the daylight hours, a lack of vitamin D is a big cause of osteoporosis. (On top of obesity and lack of outdoor activity) It's a major reason why the US ,despite consuming 3 times the global recommended calcium, is very prone to Osteoporosis.
@@kevinroche835 The places with the highest dairy milk consumption have the highest rates of osteoporosis which may just mean correlation does not equal causation but it might be the milk itself paired with the horrible standard American diet of lots of meat, dairy, and eggs. The dairy industry is making a huge business mistake pushing back against alternative milk. They should be all in on this game. There is a massive potential market with 65% (4.5 Billion) of the world population being lactose intolerant and 5% (about the same as the population of the US) being allergic to milk. Unlike them, I'm buying up any and all alternative milk companies I can find. The dairy alternatives market is expected to be worth at least $40 billion by 2025. The market growth and profit margins are twice that of dairy. Take heed, alternative milk is the new cash cow.
As someone who makes plant based milks at home, as it's just cheaper, i've never successfully made oat/rice milk, despite trying different methods, unlike soy milk, it all just settles at the bottom with water on top. I suppose it's because of their starchy nature and i figured there is a specific process behind the production of one like ''Oatly''. Well, at least soy milk never fails and you can make a lot of nice things with the okara that's left over. I wonder if some nut milks can be made at home properly, i happen to have a lot of peanuts with nothing to use em for, besides my morning smoothies.

Fun fact: I got obsessed with their song for a while... wow wow no cow 🐮 they should pay me for this haha 🤣
I only use about 1/2 cup of plant milk on my morning oat porridge. I never drink plant milks by the glass the way I used to drink milk as a kid. I suppose children might drink plant milk by the glass.

Interesting report thanks! Learnt a few things. Lucky enough here in north west UK to be able to get pretty much homemade oat milk from Oato, a family startup who bottle it in milk bottles that you can get delivered by your local milkman. Let me tell you it tastes even better than Oatly, with none of the extra mystery oils, and also fortified. Zero waste footprint compared to the pretty damn awful tetrapaks that Oatly use. Hardly anywhere is set to recycle tetrapaks but even if you find somewhere that does, they’re not closed loop recyclables so it’s pretty much still landfill material eventually. Sure, I’m slightly slightly supporting the dairy industry because the guy who delivers my bottles of Oato gets a cut, but I’m not supporting actual dairy products.
I have a friend who contacted me last night and she is having health problems and said that she needed to drink plant milk for a while. I recommended oat milk. She is diabetic and this video came into my mind and I told her to the Planet Oat because Oatly low fat isn't sold here and she has had a seriously high-fat diet to the point of gall bladder issues and diabetes. Thank you for being so helpful. It might help the vegan milk cause even more if you could find a vegetarian prick and do the regular milk versus oat milk test on them.

Fascinating video and thanks for posting it! In the UK we have an organic version of Oatly where they don't add anything other than 10% Oats, water and a pinch of sea salt. I think EU rules mean that as a condition of being labelled organic there mustn't be anything else added. So my organic Soya milk is just soya and water. I stopped drinking the Oatly though about a year ago as it was making me feel hyperglycaemic, which I confirmed by testing my blood glucose. That's probably just personal to me though. Thanks again Mic!
nothing beats home made soy milk in terms of creamyness. in the supermarket you will get 1: 10 ratio of dry soybean mass: water. At home i make it with a ratio of 1:7 and the result is a rich soy milk with that creamy aftertaste described in that video. but i admit: it is more involved to make the soy milk at home than to buy it from the supermarket. But if you really want the best quality possible, than home made is hands down the best alternative. And the benefit is, when it is homemade you have 100% control of the ingredients. I hate it when they put sugar into the soymilk.
They are protease and probably cellulases, normal origin are fungi like asparagillus. Can be produced by other organisms depending on the company that supplied them.
I like Oatly, but I pretty much stopped buying it and similar products when I switched from eating cereal to oatmeal due to lots of added sugar in cereal. Coke (and other sodas) I gave up about 13 years ago. Then I had a coke like 3 years ago and it made me pretty sick.
Superb video, informative, honest, inclusion of indisputable facts (environmental impacts, animal rights) and highly entertaining. You are one of the best advocates for the cause!
The glycemic load of oat milk may change substantially when drank along with cereal, etc. People who are not diabetic and have a healthy lifestyle and weight should not worry about glycemic load.
Excellent video as always Mic. Incidentally I am part of a Population Study that monitors blood sugar for research purposes. The protocol involves fasting, drinking 25mcg of sugar water and then recording blood glucose levels. Two hours later and still in the fasting state, blood glucose is measured again. If results show that levels have returned to normal the participant is considered at low risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.
I’d be really interested to see the comparison vs the oatly that has added oil. Also, where I live we can get the cokes made for Mexico which have natural cane sugar, idk if they’re available everywhere, but it would be so interesting to compare the 2 cokes head to head to see the difference from real sugar to high fructose corn syrup. I guess I could do the experiment myself 😂

I live in Sweden and Oatly is like a must have, especially that if I remember correctly, Sweden is in top 3 with biggest amount of people with osteoporosis. I'm using everything from Oatly. From milk, yogurth, creme fraiche to iMat , the best cooking cream ever. Thanks Mic for this video!:)
Also I've been told by my doctor that most people in the United States don't get enough vitamin D whether they eat meat, dairy, eggs or not and everyone should take supplements at least sometimes. The same goes for B12.
@Candid_Vegan Actually, Mike himself made a video about this claim (called something like vegan myths) and it's not correct. The most recent science now suggests that the reason for less bone density could be impaired blood flow to the bones because of high cholesterol / atherosclerosis. :)

How could they possibly be sued for that!? It's insane. On what grounds would that be valid?

Check out the channel “Sauce Stache” if you haven’t yet - specifically his video “How to milk everything the easy way.” It might be of help to you. :)
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Ye i know the guy, though i still haven't been able to mike oat/rice milks, with raw oats it just settles at the bottom with water on top, just like rice and doesn't retain the milky consistency soy does.
The starch just doesn't mix well with water, it quickly separates, would need something to turn it into sugar like they do with the store bought one, like malting to create a milky consistency.
@Kristers Krūka
Hmm, than how did the Stache man achieve his successful results then? Did he use a more powerful machine than you used, possibly?
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Well i have a professional blender where you can dial it up to crazy speeds, but the thing is, he didn't make rice milk in that video and i've tried his method(boiling rice) for a few times it still turns out very slimy and vague with poor taste. As for his oat milk, he didn't show it after the milk has stood still for an hour or two, after that time the mushed oat mass just settles at the bottom and it loses the milky texture you see when its fresh.
@Kristers Krūka
I see. Well thanks for the heads up! Good luck in trying to find a solution! :)

"...I dont even know where the soda section is..." Thats understandable, your highness.
The serving size is determined by the manufacturer. You have to compare by volume not serving. You may still be correct. Example: Pepperidge Farms lowered the fat per serving by reducing the serving size.

Hate soy milk or anything soy for that matter. Almond is my go to and oat milk.
