  • An architect's review of the Frank Gehry Masterclass: what to expect, what you’ll get, who I think it’s for, my favorite lessons, and whether I think it’s worth taking.
    ***Enroll here: thirtybyforty.com/gehry-master...
Gehry is a polarizing figure in the architecture world. You’ll either love or hate his work, rarely is there an in-between. This was actually one of the reasons I enrolled in the MasterClass, because I have a hard time with Gehry's work; it defies sensibility to me. So, I wanted a deeper understanding of his motivations. And of course there's the fact that this kind of personalized access to the mind and design process of a world-renowned architect is still a novel thing. Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to learn from this level of architect, a true master? I also wanted to cultivate the artist's mindset in my own work.
Watch the video to see whether I think the course delivers on all that it promises.

30X40 Design Workshop Why is this masterclass chargeable anyways.. There are people who can't afford.. And they deserve to be educated.. I'm sure Gehry has earned a lot by now.. Why not pass on his knowledge.. They want to make money out of everything.. Greedy

Great review! Your review was informative, honest and positive! So impressed. Long before I purchased and watched the video, Sketches of Frank Gehry by Sydney Pollack, I have always admired Mr. Gehry's stoic determination to stay focused and true to his visions of architecture. I keep a growing file of articles regarding Mr. Gehry's creations. My favorite is the article regarding the design and creation of his yacht. Mr. Gehry will always live as my hero.

Wow, I cant believe I saw a review of this course on you part. It is brave of you to have done it, knowing that there were many critics around the world around this course, although, seeing your review, I think many unfounded and even exaggerated. Now I can say that this course is not for me, at least for now, but I'm glad to have seen your review, now I understand much better what it actually offers. thanks!

    • @30by40

      you're welcome +Mauro Cerino.
if one comes to the course looking for specifics on how to be an architect, or how to be Frank Gehry, it would be easy to criticize. however, if one see this as professional mentorship, an opportunity to listen to the stories and anecdotes of a very successful architect, then (I think) it's hard to criticize. thanks for watching...

    • @maurocerino5600
      @maurocerino5600 6 років тому

totally agree. The theme is that it spread even in specialized media such as Plataforma Arquitectura and Architizer. With questions of order "Is it possible to learn to be an architect learning in an online course?" And without a way to know exactly the specific objective of the same any (myself included) could easily dismiss this course. I'm on the other side now. regards.

    LOVED the expression "cross pollination"!!!
very well put, thats exactly what we seek by taking tangets to other fields of knowledge for creativity boosts (and what I imagine, in turn, what professionals from other fields must look for when interested in ours). I'm from Brazil, so I didn't know that expression in particular yet, but will surely use it in an opportune moment (should it arise). hahaha

I am really glad that you made this video. I would also like to know how Gehry goes from a rough sketch to a master piece, in step by step, explaining his thinking however; I am glad he doesn't. He allows the student to learn from their own outlooks. I looked at the course outline before, now I will enrol.

I am a huge fan of Gehry's work. I think he is part genius architect / part mad scientist. I love that his designs are so free form and outside the box. My original major was architecture, but I ended up in graphic design. While I was great at design, board work (this was the dinosaur days pre CAD), and perspective drawings, my 3d model making skills sucked. My classmates agreed that I had a "glue curse." Basically NO glue I used would hold. (My Le Cobusier chair project literally melted during the presentation. LOL) I often wonder if in this age of the 3d printer if I would have thrived. So, while I didn't end up in my original field, I LOVED my classes at Drexel University, and I LOVE architecture. I am presently teaching an Intro to Architecture class to middle and high school students. I find your videos fascinating and inspiring. Thank you. I wondered about Frank Gehry's Masterclass, and I'm hoping to take the course. Thank you for the review.

I enjoyed your presentation, Eric, as I always do. In early 2016, I was fortunate enough to tour a Gehry designed house in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. It was quite a treat to see, but I have my own reservations about his work. I also, by happenstance, met Thom Mayne earlier this year and he provided a personal tour of his own recently completed residence in Los Angeles. Both of those houses are complex amalgamations of esoteric study. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but, here is my question for everyone. Licensed architects design very few of the houses that are built in the United States, so are we, as a profession, pushing too far with intellectualization of architecture to be accessible to most people? I have my own answer to this, but I want to hear what others think. Cheers, SCR

How long and how much time you have invested in the course on a daily/weekly basis? Also, I am interested to know what other Masterclasses you have taken so far? :)

Hi +Loaei Haifa, glad you found this one helpful.
The videos are between 5 and 16 mins each so they're easy to fit in to almost any schedule I would say. And, you can return to them anytime, so it's self-paced. For you, they might be a welcome break from the rigor of the ARE studying. I've also taken DeadMau5 and Werner Herzog's MCs and I'll be enrolling in Annie Leibovitz (photography) next, then Aaron Sorkin's class.
Good luck on the AREs, not very many make it as far as you've come...!

Thank you for this! I was very excited and a bit skeptical when I saw Gehry doing a Masterclass. The whole Masterclass series seems like such a cool concept that could very easily fail to live up to lofty expectations. I've been waffling on it for awhile, but I think you just convinced me to give it a shot later this year.

    • @30by40
      @30by40  6 років тому

You're welcome my friend. I think the trick is to manage your expectations. Know that you're not going to come away with a raft of actionable information, rather it's time spent with a true master of our craft. That kind of access is precious and rare and whatever form it comes in, I'll take it. I think it's a great investment in your professional development. Cheers...

You're a really sharp guy, inciteful, and articulate. I've watched several of your videos so far, and intend to watch more. Gehry, and architects like him, those who sell extravagant designs, are in a small minority in the industry. That's not because there isn't a load of architects who are just as creative, it's because there is a very limited number of clients who have the desire and the money for that sort of thing. That client wants a flamboyant building that will get his company, or just his name, the public notice he yearns for. Those clients don't just want a crazy building, they need one designed by a famous architect, not an unknown. This is about fame, boasting, pride, but it's also an investment. There undoubtedly are Gehry clients who actually earn back the building's extra high cost due to the publicity brought by its oddness, and famous designer. I'm pretty sure that Bilboa has brought in more than enough visitors to have repaid it's extremely high. In short, this is a pretty small niche in the architectural design world. Many students produce designs that are as imaginative as any of Gehry's, but clients to pay for their construction are very rare. Architectures main goals are getting the clients stuff protected from weather and thieves, and meeting the legal requirements. The spaces are what the client needs, he gets the outside as an unavoidable side effect. The budget to make that exterior look good is often rather tight. I'd be interested in seeing a video where you address this subject, even if you completely disagree with my position.

I've taken this masterclass a week ago. while I expected something else from it but in general, it's not that bad. Sure it doesn't teach you to be like Frank or to design stuff like he does. Instead, it's more like a source of inspiration or a few general things for designers and architects to consider.

Maybe Im not looking hard enough, but it feels like in this age of mass comunication several professions and hobbies have a very rich online database of thinkers, enthusiasts, commentators, guide makers, opinion leaders and taste makers. But the field of architecture doest feel to me like it has that rich online presence and of the content that is most easily available its usually locked behind a paywall or only the (usually enriching) voices of starchitects are really heard. Even the modt populous sites like Archdaily have little comentary or live discussion. Is it the introverted/reserved nature of architects or their very busy lives doing this or am I simply looking in the wrong places?

Absolutely +William Mcmeekin...the Pre-Enrollment is just an on-boarding process, when you sign-up they'll give you access within a very short time (this has happened to me with at least a couple of MasterClasses). Some of the videos were re-recorded at Gehry's request which originally pushed back the release date, but they're all up now...I think you'll enjoy it. Cheers...

First time I heard of Master Class was when I saw a youtube ad of Hans Zimmer's Master Class (I'm a huge fan of his work).
Then I came across Frank Gehry's, which is another icon that I admire and respect. I decided to enroll in his class but needed to know how it is formatted, and I thank you for letting us know. The reason to why I want to enroll is because I'm an architecture student, in my third year. For me, architecture was never an option but was forced to take it. (initially I was pressed to study medicine but did not go down that path)
And I guess, all this time I was, and still, searching for something that would make me love and enjoy architecture more than I do (this is important to me if I want to make architecture the career of my life). Taking History of Architecture helped a lot, though. So now I'm looking out of the scope of university material to help me even more with that.
Anyways that was long, I just want to thank your for this honest video, now I have the courage to take the class. :)

As tutor suggested, I have tried to comibine some thoughts into car styling also design process. If possible please demenstrate some very little process in terms of thinking and ideas for a project. certainly...like any masterclass parts of it will focus on the general concepts and routines while other parts will be understood by professionals with years of experience. this class has a good balance.

      30X40 Design Workshop
      Thanks Mr. Eric,
I'm a great follower of your channel and your website,
your advice, sketches are always an inspiration.
I'm very passionate about architecture, 32 yrs old and currently working in Dubai as an architectural draftsman since March 2008
i'd appreciate if you could help me or advise "how to become an licensed architect"
to be frank, my educational qualification is Very bad (only till 10th grade) i went to learn draftsman civil after my school days instead of colleges,
but i have a great experience in the architectural field, also i'm very good in softwares such as AutoCAD, 3ds max and vray
I know it's a hard to become an architecture
but there's always a WAY to reach every goal,
Your valuable reply is highly appreciated..

I had friends who worked for Frank Gehry, first off he has a hard time remembering your name. He would hand you a crumpled piece of paper and ask you how fast you can put it on the computer. Gehry project often resemble a vinyl record that's been left out in the sun too long. Which are major headaches for structural engineers and nightmare for mechanical engineers to heat and cool.

No doubt, no more "Gehrys" are needed in the world. New paths are needed, new directions based on other ideas. I welcome this new delivery, colleague. A cordial greeting

Great review Eric. Frank Gehry's work is truly inspiring. However, in his interview with La Phil on the Walt Disney Concert Hall [ ua-cam.com/video/ur1qbB5tOkA/v-deo.html ], Frank Gehry says that he always designs from the 'inside out' yet on the documentary on sketches of Frank Gehry we clearly see him using a physical model to navigate through his art particularly that part where he 'corrugates' a facade which is basically designing from the 'outside in'. Give your thoughts on this please.

I felt exactly the same way +Tim Barber, which is one of the reasons I wanted to take the course, to better understand his motivations. He really cultivates the artist's mindset and I found that particularly fascinating...it's hard to do in a world where the commercial pressures on our work so often dominate the discussion. Always good to challenge our own deeply held beliefs about things, this did that for me. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts...

The problem with Gehry is that he doesn't focus on beauty, he focuses on randomness, his designs are scribble in the the form of a building. Older architecture is beautiful because of it's symbolic forms and use of natural materials, it doesn't try to impose and doesn't have an imaginary sign telling you to "suck it up". Architects should not impose, they should create designs that are objectively beautiful and functional. We need to draw the line somewhere.
