Architecture Client Presentation

  • A behind-the-scenes look at a typical architecture client presentation for a residential project currently in design. I’ll show you the drawings, models, material samples and imagery I've developed for my clients to review at a recent meeting. Although I wasn’t able to sneak you in for the actual meeting (that’s been difficult to arrange with private clients) I’ve done the next best thing and that is to share with you the thinking and methodology that goes into every single client meeting.
Together we’ll review the agenda and how I structure it, all the documents, images, and materials I compile. I discuss the importance of building a coherent story and narrative, how to structure your relationship as a collaboration, why I don’t believe in final renderings, and the special importance sketching has in a meeting environment.
Every client meeting is an opportunity to listen more than you speak and I stress how important it is to compartmentalize the myriad decisions into sensible portions to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

I am 40 and am deciding to go back to school for Architectural design and drafting. That was my original goal when I was 12. That turned into kitchen and bath design when I was 25 and now I want to help out an architect or work in a design firm where ever it leads I went through lots of health problems in my late 20's and 30's but the passion is still alive. I tried freelancing art for my 20's and 30's and I am better at Cad, 2 point perspective drawing, drafting. I can visualize the space on paper and what it will look like in real life. Now that I finally have narrowed down. What my focus is. The process of learning is going to be fascinating and fun!! I never had a person take me by my hand and teach me what they know. I was always on my own. I will be going back to school to learn Architectural Design and Drafting. Plus, practicing every day drawing and research. Thanks 30x40 for helping along the way.

I'm 24 and I study business and law over 3 years now. I never knew what my passion was and now I deep down know that that direction is not something that I enjoy and thats the reason I'm stuck with my studies. But after so much time I'm truly too afraid too quit what I'm doing and follow a nother direction. The biggest Problem is I still don't know what my Passion is. But I always admierd people like you who are very passionate and good in what they do. Seeing you I wish I could do the same. But every year that passes by (and on top of that I'm a woman and wanna have kids and I just married and so on) the pressure to get something done rises, the more I loose my mind and shot down.

an amazing explanation, because all the input, opinions, and ways to convey ideas by explaining them through stories and approaches to image drawing are the easiest things for clients to understand. sometimes we forget that clients are ordinary people we invite discussion to understand the intentions we want to convey, moreover their efforts are very enthusiastic in making decisions. we as consultants, must be able to provide information as easily as possible. I agree with you.

I find it interesting that you don't see final renders at collaborative. We find we can get our idea across with no confusion, the client has a really good idea of what we are proposing. We have discussions of what they like or don't like about the design. We also find clients that have built before they never fully understood Elevations and Floorplans the architects have designed. We love to sketch as well, its great way to get quick ideas out and we like the artistry that's involved. So I think a combination of both works great for us.

    Very well produced video.
A very engaging speaker and the filming style made the presentation elegant. Kudos to the people or person behind the camera and in the editing bay.

As always..really awesome post. I am still surprised at how you juggle it all: client meetings, site visits, drafting for approval and construction, paperwork and especially revision drawings and detail drawings for Contractors.

    Great Video!
This collaborative style of architecture reminds of the Japanese firm 'Mikan' which is a firm of four principal architects who evolve their designs from extensive discussions between themselves and later the designs are shared with the stakeholders for further discussion and the design evolves further!

Your opinion on renders is almost exactly the same as my professor (I study graphic design) opinion about mockups.
It is nice to see that other people agree with that.

My mentor is almost 80 years old and still climbing up and down structures. He does all of the things in this video without explaining the whys. Now that I've seen this video, I have a better understanding on what he does during meetings.
