Very nice, clear, well-photographed and to the point video without annoying and loud music or chit-chat! This was very helpful towards installing the high speed pinion/spur gear in our Traxxas 2wd Rustler. Well done and thanks!
My Slash (Model: TRA58034-1-HWN) is built in a way that the black piece of plastic that is in between the motor and pinion gear cant spin, but there's no jiggle [7:14] so I can't tell whether Traxxas changed something in the past several years, or if I did something wrong. Either way, it's not the maker of this video's fault, because this video was made in 2016, and it still showed me how to install the spur and pinion gear. Thank you for this video!
Teacher, I copied ALL your notes that came across the screen & typed them up on the computer for future reference~! I NEVER changed the gears on any of my 15+ vehicles I own. Your comments really helped me out making decisions on to change the gears or not? THANK YOU VERY MUCH Sir.
Thank you for the end of the video because I was about to gear up on my traxxas 2wd slash and I don't really feel like burning up the motor cause I just got it thanks for explaining why I shouldn't
Really helpful video considering I'm getting a Traxxas bandit vxl and want to change the pinion gear as soon as I get it was looking for a good video that shows in detail Thank you :)
@@damage_daniel2526 he is probabbly using 76t 48p spur gear adn the 29t pion gear but do one at a time becuase it slow it down or you could over heat it rember use lock tight
Just posting my experience in case it helps anybody. I got my slash in July 2021 and it comes pre-installed with a plastic piece that keeps the motor positioned perfectly for the installed pinion gear. You will need to unscrew the motor and take that out if you are changing the pinion gear size. I think that piece is new so older videos won't mention it but if you have a current product that should help.
Great video. On my 2018 slash there is a plastic instert between the motor and the gear housing ... can rotate the motor back. Had to pull motor out to find out
Remove the plastic insert between the motor and the housing, it’s a black piece of plastic. They put it in there so that it is a perfect factory fit every time and won’t come loose and strip your gears.
Hmm usually I take advice from you but I think you're supposed to use a 1/16 inch hex to tighten your pinion. I used to use a 1.5mm but over time, the little grub screw got stripped but luckily, it wouldn't tighten all the way because the pinion kept falling off on the track. I went in to the hobby shop and asked the guy what was wrong and he told me that you only use a 1/16 inch hex driver for pinion grub screws and I bought a new pinion and a 1/16 inch hex and have not had any problems since!
This was a very simple, yet a very detailed video and super easy to follow along and understand, and for myself....This is by far the best kind and this was a 12 on a scale from 1 to 10! That's why I had to subscribe to your channel bud. Many thanks and I feel extra confident doing this on mine where otherwise I was very hesitant! Thanks a million brother!
Awesome video I was wondering if you are going to make a 4x4 video on the spur gear and pinion my cousin has a 4x4 and needs help I can't show him because he lives across the state
I have to watch this I've had mine for like 3 weeks already burned out spur gear going trough mud so my pinion is not catching and spinning the wheels and make a scratching noise
Look into something called a "ez out extractor set" next time you strip out the head on something. You might have to order the smaller sets online but their out there.
The basic kit for Rustler 2WD comes with a size up pinion and Spur gear however you’ll have to remove the motor gear spacer which sets the pinion and spur gear spacing. Then use the awesome tip in the video to adjust the new gearing properly or buy the appropriate motor gear spacer.
I tried to do this but all of the screws are way too tight I can't even move them! I was thinking it's because it's pretty new so I should drive it more first! Any solutions or should I just drive it more? Please help thank you!
Use a 1/16 inch Allen, the 1.5 is too small. There is tons of locktight on the grub screw but it will come lose. Also new models are pre-set for the 23 tooth pinion and you have to dremel out the plastic at the gear mount to use the supplied 28 tooth pinion. Just went through it. 23 tooth is good enough though, slash tends to sail at high speeds. 3s 90c constant lipo is insane! 45 mph wheelies!
Hey man. Merry Christmas. I want to ask something. I have an FTX comet monster truck and the pinion gear hasn't got a screw. What can I do in order to take it off??? PLEASE ANSWER
I have a traxxas rustler VXL and I’m running a 5000mah 11.1V Venom Lipo battery. What would you suggest I do to make the tires spin. I’m using it for drifting
heres my questions, i did something silly but fun and cool looking. 2.8s in rear and stock in front. rears are pretty wide. would it be a good idea to use the second spur with slower pinion? and how will that affect the car
there is one other trick not mentioned here to remove a stripped set screw, left hand drill bits, they are just like regular drill bits only go the opposite direction. if you spin a left hand drill bit slow once it takes hold it will usually spin the set screw out just like an easy-out/screw extractor would. left hand drill bits can be real life savors for removing all kinds of stripped screws and bolts.....
Im learning how to install gears on my own. Quick question.. Grub screw on my pinion gear does it tighten all the way till it doesnt make the pinion gear turn or how much does the grub screw go in? Its all set the correct way so idk what’s going on.
@Michael Frost Your lack of punctuation, and the lack of being able to correctly spell one of the easiest words in the english dictionary, that very word being "You." The fact that you are unable to spell something so incredibly simple is so utterly pathetic, that i want to vomit, as most learn how to say and spell that word at the very young age of 2. Most likely, and very luckily, you do know how to spell it, but due to you being so lazy that you can't even bear waiting 1 second to type just 3 letters, you decided to take a "shortcut" and simply type "U" which is indeed, the most repulsive form of impatience and laziness that has been seen by even god himself... Anyways, have an incredible day. As nobody on this earth deserves to be insulted that harshly. Please be safe during this pandemic and practice social distancing. Have a great day...
Just bought a rustler. Didn’t even get a whole battery’s worth of play and my dang spur gear ⚙️ is destroyed. 🤷🏻♂️ idk how this happened. Literally smelled like burning plastic. All kinds of shavings and nastiness in there. As a person who hasn’t owned an R/C car since the Cox Bandito back in the early 1990s I’m a little concerned that these new cars are so finicky.
Alex Solis Depends what you use it for. I have a brushless Skully that I use for grass and dirt, and I run 18t pinion and 90t spur. For more intense stuff though, maybe go 15/86 or 15/90
Telemetry is when your actually viewing your screen Such as an iPhone, iPad, A controller that has an LCD. Etc, Etc... For example your looking at Miles per hour and Rpms via an APP that you download to your phone or compatible tablet for traxxas cars and trucks. Most people buy a wireless gps. that shows you speed. I believe distance too. When your looking at the screen, thats showing you Telemetry. ( Any Screen )
allen wong I don't know. I've never tried them before. But I know if you use metal on metal with gears you might have heat issues from friction. For Xl5 it might be okay.
It's on-purpose. If something goes badly, and the spur gear strips, then it's 5 minutes and a couple of dollars to fix it. If the gears were all metal, the force that stripped the plastic gear would be transmitted somewhere else....like the motor. The motor is designed to make lots of torque, but it is not designed to have to push up against something that won't move (it's not a power-drill with crazy gear reduction). If something goes awry with your transmitter, and the model hits an immovable object and the throttle is sticking, you will either destroy your motor ($200), or your spur gear ($3-5). Which would you rather replace? P.S. the hypothetical situation of your transmitter malfunctioning is only one quick example, and it actually happened to me! I was a noob and tried to switch the throttle/brake bias from 50/50 to 70/30 on the transmitter while driving....little did I know, that makes the truck think I'm hitting 20% more throttle than I am, even when I let off completely....in hindsight, that is obvious, but at the time I did not think I had to reprogram my ESC to make the switch (but you do!)
I got a hex sized screw that got the 1,5mm hex head. and got it out using one that got bigger the harder u pushed it in. If its still stuck, try taking a really small flat head screw driver, make sure its a little bit wider than the hex hole, but not wider than the screw its self. brace the spur on something hard and use a hammer to tap the screw driver in the screw slightly, it should unscrew pretty easy. just gotta make sure you have a replacement screw lol

Thank you for helping me understand my RC truck your advice help me thank you
Great Video and thank you for going into details . I finally understand how to increase torque(acceleration) in my trx defender. I need to gear down .
Thanks very much. And by the way there some bits in the Navy we called them E-Z outs, that we use to remove striped out screws.
Great video. On my 2018 slash there is a plastic instert between the motor and the gear housing ... can rotate the motor back. Had to pull motor out to find out
Tony coffee I have the same, I want to put another pinion gear size on but it doesn’t rotate. Ideas?
Remove the plastic insert between the motor and the housing, it’s a black piece of plastic. They put it in there so that it is a perfect factory fit every time and won’t come loose and strip your gears.
Man your video's are Top notch!! please keep making informative Rc content. Thanks DEH you Rock!!!!!!!
Excellent video! Best help I have found for traxxas cars. Thorough clear and detailed. Noice
This helped me so much thank you for posting this video, it is the only one that actually makes sense to me
Hmm usually I take advice from you but I think you're supposed to use a 1/16 inch hex to tighten your pinion. Yeah, some companies use 1/16
Fantastic video! Thank you!
Great camera work. Very helpful.
THANK UUUU BROOOOOO
Excellent tutorial, I wish I had seen something like this years ago when I was getting into RC! The adjustment tips would have helped me a lot haha
thanks for that there is not very many great videos like this one
Nice info exactly what i was looking for
great informational vid Jason.
Excellent video ,,well done

,bro thank you for this video. It really helped since I am new to this stuff
Jason! I caught Jester watching MotorTrend! He should be on set filming the next movie! Just thought I'd let you know.
Awesome video I was wondering if you are going to make a 4x4 video on the spur gear and pinion my cousin has a 4x4 and needs help I can't show him because he lives across the state
My pinion wont come off...I have a Allen key....how do i take it off?
same
Michael Frost lmao
@Michael Frost I stripped it they probably did to I’m so mad
Everyone, I burned 3 motors in total as I the spur too close to pionion gear. Please remember to leave some space!!
The motor in my car isn't rotating to adjust space between the gears, what do I do?
Excellent garbles. Excellent. Now to squeeze out 70mph and overheat my motor.😉
Where did you get that Gear Case and spare gears ? Great video !
Very good video!!!!!
I have to watch this I've had mine for like 3 weeks already burned out spur gear going trough mud so my pinion is not catching and spinning the wheels and make a scratching noise
THANK TOU SO MUCH THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH
Awesome advice !
can you do more review rc products on the upgrades like strc and more rpm parts
and other upgrades you have done
Look into something called a "ez out extractor set" next time you strip out the head on something. You might have to order the smaller sets online but their out there.
Great work! Kudos 😉
Should we just leave the gears dry, or is it better to use some kind of lubricant, if so what kind? 🤔

Can I have a Shot Out !!! 1st to ask....cool vid as always !!!
.........
My grub screw seems to be rusted is there any way to get that out still
Where you get that awsome wheelie bar
I just got the BIGFOOT original one can I just change the pinion for full speed or do I have to do everything u did. Thanks
Just spent 2 hours on changing the optional pinion and spur
Im very new got my slash like 3 months ago
I'm going to install hot racing spur gear and it's steel and would it do anything to the pinion gear and have the same spur pitch.
Yo I can’t screw the screw that’s near the mesh it won’t go in been doing it for a hour and don’t know what to do
So uhh, what would happen if you took off the adjustment nut for the slipper clutch, and took that all apart, would it still work?

Hey In a brushed slash 2wd will a 19 tooth pinion gear make it go faster
Best way to get loctite to loosen up is with soldering iron . Just put it on the grub screw and let it heat up
Did all theses steps brand new pinion gear still revs on the floor goes no where in the air Tires spin and won’t start spinning for a while
Tighten your slipper clutch
aka the little screw on spur gear
I got a stampede 2 wd with a brushless what the best thing you recommend on my opinion and spur gear
Alex Solis
Depends what you use it for.
I have a brushless Skully that I use for grass and dirt, and I run 18t pinion and 90t spur.
For more intense stuff though, maybe go 15/86 or 15/90
Haha…how many times did he say “go ahead and”?
My 2023 Slash is different, the screws are on the opposite side
My pinion gear will not stay on, the grub screw is as tight as it can get, but after a couple minutes of runtime it slides off
What pinion gear do you have there
What pinion gear should I use a 76 tooth spur gear
Is it normal for my spur gear to not want to crew out
Is a "grub screw" a "set screw"?
Charles Haas yes
2:04 what is that wired sensor for?
Telemetry, like speed n all
Do you know what is the factory pinion/spur n° of teeth set up for a vxl 2wd?
86t 48p
Just use the Alan key it comes with for the grub screw
can someone help my stampede motor is making some sort of clicking sound do you know how to fix this? thanks
Amos Y is it VXL? You may have driven it too hot causing damage to the magnets does the car perform worse than before?
Sir where I can find spur gear and penon
What u reccomend gearing for asphalt or clay xl5 rustler. On 2s lipo low voltage. Thanks
I would say the included high speed gearing... I know it's been 2 years but still🤣🤣

Same
What abt a 4x4 rustler
I think you should change the title. There's a lot more information in this video thumbs up
i did this but now its not running right, just seems to spin ouy, anyone know what it could be, im new to hobby
I can't get the grub screw out I tryed everything including WD-40 😔
Yeah I know right
I change the gear but when I press to accelerate it will it go what is my problem
Pedro Lopez tighten your slipper clutch
is it a good idea to get a metal spur geatr

When we you going to post the rest if tv mini movie
Typo rc
allen wong not sure. I'd like to finish it soon though.
the pinion gear isn't coming off what am i doing wrong
Josh Roberts same
Josh Roberts same did you figure it out
50th comment and exactly 25000th viewer
My grub screw is too tight
I hate how they use plastic gears
They arent plastic lol
The spur is plastic the pinion is metal
Dylan Brookbank Yes.. they are, only the pinion is metal, and that is standard...
They aren’t plastic

Dremel took like 5min to get screw outta pinion gear.
FIRST
What am i gonna do if the gear is stripped? :|
Thats what happsned to me. The grub screw will not budge. Freaking rediculous Traxxas.
I got a hex sized screw that got the 1,5mm hex head. and got it out using one that got bigger the harder u pushed it in. (That's what she said) Got a picture here:

u dont take the spur gear off that way take the middle bolt off first
My grub screw got jacked up somehow and now I can’t do anything.. what do I do? Nothing is getting this thing off
If its still stuck, try taking a really small flat head screw driver, make sure its a little bit wider than the hex hole, but not wider than the screw its self. brace the spur on something hard and use a hammer to tap the screw driver in the screw slightly, it should unscrew pretty easy. just gotta make sure you have a replacement screw lol
