The general idea is it is better to experience a strong base line with stock parts before switching things up. It can skew your perception of performance gains and/or fine adjustments as they pertain to RC racing.
I just bought my first rc car and haven't received it yet. Rustler 4x4. I don't know shit about cars in general, let alone rc cars. I've been going through UA-cam and emailing rc stores trying to get info on maintenance and this video is by far the best one I've seen. So much detail and exact directions. I've been terrified about having to do any maintenance, but this video made me feel 100% better! Thank you so much.
The more I see these multi diff/transmission/drivetrain videos, the more I realize that I know virtually nothing about them! My truck isn’t here but I’m sure I could find the right video. This was great though, I was able to learn things you should know regardless of your car. Thanks!
One of the best diff oil change instructions I've seen yet and I'm glad traxxas made their diffs maintenance friendly with all the groves and notches inside so it's easier for a casual hobbyist to put everything back in the right place. Not all RC brand does that.
This is an exemplary video. You have the gift of teaching, as demonstrated by the unusually thorough and clear instructions. There are so many long-winded how-to videos out there that it was refreshing how respectful you were of our TIME. Even though the video was more than twice as long as other videos on the same topic, it SEEMED shorter. You didn't waste our time by trying to be entertaining, sharing irrelevant anecdotes, or showing unnecessary steps (e.g. removing screws) like many other UA-camrs. I've been nervous about taking apart the front diff on my Slash 4x4, but now I'm not, thanks to you.
Thanks for the reply on the greases.. Your video's are excellent and informative. You're definitely an asset to the RC world ! Traxxas, if your'e reading this, you should sort this man out a free car here and there, without his clear and precise video's i for starters wouldn't have delved into this hobby as much ! (Buying my fourth traxxas car and only got into this at Christmas lol)
Julian UK I totally agree. I just bought a Traxxas UDR and also have a TRX4...but I’m relatively new to the hobby. I am a believer in maintenance and want to do a good job, but the Traxxas manuals, although good in most respects, are kinda lacking in the maintenance area in regards to beginners. In general terms it says to do this and do that, but nowhere are there detailed “how-to” steps or videos. I have been watching hundreds of UA-cam videos trying to figure out how to change Diff fluid....and this video is the first to walk me through it. The only comment I would make is that perhaps you should point out that Diff fluid is generally very thick...almost like honey. I had no idea....
total excellence… Best tutorial on UA-cam… An absolute masterpiece and I thank you so much for being out here. Take care I will follow your instructions. Thank you so much
Great video. My 9 y/o son and I are just entering the world of RC and we started with the Stampede 4x4 vxl a couple months ago. Your videos have been incredibly helpful as I learn the ins and outs of the truck and help him maintain, repair and upgrade it along the way.
AWESOME TUTORIAL!!! I've watched tons of UA-cam videos but I've never left a comment......Yet I feel obligated to write a comment about your tutorials. Simply to give you the credit you deserve! BEST TUTORIAL I'VE EVER SEEN!!!!!! Very professional, clearly spoken, detailed information & instructions, great video editing of non-essential information! I'm definitely a new subscriber and fan! Thanks for doing a GREAT JOB! keep it up! AWESOME. ..................
just want to thank you for the how to video. you've helped me with the 2wd slash a couple of years ago. And now watching this one because I got myself a slash 4x4 ultimate. so I will be watching this on the side doing maintenance. thanks m8
Very clear and precise instructions. I just got back into the hobby. I only ran nitro as a kid. I have several RC cars now. This video helps much. Not a noob, but not experienced with electric as much.
So many UA-cam video's have people yapping away wasting time. I don't mind a funny aside but I'm not looking for a lot of unrelated comments. Your stuff is perfect. Terrific job.
@@darkeclipticheartdumb question since I'm doing this 9 years later. Why the heavier diff fluid in the front diff over the rear? I'm looking for an even transfer of power on a stock setup if possible
This is a very helpful video. I'm new to RC and have been looking for maintenance how-to videos and this is the most helpful that I've seen for differential maintenance.
So watching your video I take it someone had it apart before and had the washer behind the wrong seal on the front. At about 7:40 you pull the gear out of the diff housing and I never notice you switching gears, but that one did not have the washer. Great video, I plan on doing mine this weekend, and just want to make sure I done mess it up. Seems pretty straight forward.
Thank you so much for this video. Very well done! I appreciated the links to skip ahead. I decided to do this job because of grease leaking out of the rear diff (Stampede). With your help, this was much easier than I expected. Now you have inspired my to get into the front end as well. Again, Thanks!!!
Thank you so much for this video. Took me 2 hours to clean and change the diff fluid in my used 4x4 slash vxl (I cleaned every plastic piece as well while I was busy). It works perfectly 👍.
Just followed your video while working on my Stampede 4x4 VXL. Diffs were exactly the same, no oil in the front and yucky looking stuff in the rear. Thanks for your really informative and clear videos!
Great video. I just bought my first rc (Traxxas Stampede) and was wondering about basic maintenance when I found this video. I've only had mine for two weeks so it will Ben a while before I need to perform this maintenance but this video will definitely be my guide!
For my stampede, i use marine grease in the case, but in the rear differential, i recently put 20 million weight fluid in. Its like putty. Basically turned my rear into a pretty tight limited slip. Its starting to loosen up just a bit, but its still pretty tight. Its great in the dirt, And will do a full on wheelie on one wheel.
The xo-1 differentials have an I-brace and they have metal retainers that slide on the cup. I put those with aluminum cups in my slash when I rebuilt the diffs recently.
I’ve ran black grease for my slash 4x4 for the last 7 yrs!! No problems in the rear diff what’s so ever! AND I BASH THE SHT OUT IF MY TRUCK! Racing? Who cares? But good instruction on the vid.
Although I’m fairly new to RC, the same principle should apply... I’ve done my fair share of auto mechanics in my day and one thing I have learned and definitely want to pass on, STOP using WD-40 as a parts cleaner! Though it’s effective, it’s a penetrating oil. This means it has properties that will destroy rubber, plastic and nylon seals over time.. it’s also not very good for the metal parts either... my suggestion is to switch to an automotive parts cleaner which come in liquid and aerosol form. This will greatly improve parts longevity... Everything else, instructionally, is absolutely awesome information!
Thank you a TON!!! Amazing instructions on this how to. I'm going to be doing this on my Slash 4x4 as I have NEVER changed my diff fluid and lost all of it in the front diff. Thumbs up!
I’ve been out of the hobby for a long time. Just getting back into it and picked up a used slash 4x4 for $150 and now I’m here. I use to watch your rc videos back when I was younger funny all these years later here I am again and here you are even after all this time you’ve got the best video for rebuilding these I can find😂 Are you still doing stuff with the RC’s or not so much anymore?
At 14:18 you said you remove the bearings, spray with WD-40, and then wipe them down. My question is: What do you wipe them down with? Standard wash rag (will it leave any "fuzz" residue?), paper towel, or does it really matter? Sorry for such a dumb question, but I am a n00b.
Thank you for the videos it help me a lot I just bought a telluride tracks and the gears where sounding ruff thanks for this video I hope a hobby store is open on sunday .
Watch that you don't spray wd40 in your bearings. It will remove lube or grease that's in the bearings, it will make wear out. Just wipe off and add bearing oil. Most can just be wiped off with the coffee filter. Cheers! Nice video!
Hi Dark. I'm asking you this question because you clearly have the best, most explicit and to-the-point video on this subject, so here goes: I race a 4x4 Slash, using Proline Blockades. The track has a heavy clay content. I use very heavy driveline diff fluid. I was hoping you could recommend a diff fluid value for my rear diff, as it tends to spin out too easily. Currently it contains 1M cst silicone fluid while the front has 6k. (Odd combination I know but it was all I had at the time.) Thanks in advance. AL
Lol, yes to me they are interesting and ironic because he just sits there and explains how to paint the scene and he just flicks his brush around like a toy but the end result is such a magnificent picture. He had such talent, too bad he died at 53, such a shame. Anyways sorry for the little rant. Its good to see some people are admiring the past.
What kind of springs do you use? What is the spring rate? What weight shock oil do you use? and What do you set the front and rear rebounds at with the ultra shocks ?
Quick question regarding the grease, on your video " RC "How To" Maintain/Clean/Change Transmission For 2WD RUSTLER SLASH STAMPEDE BANDIT " You're using the White lithium grease, for the outside gears, and the dark moly lithium grease, on the internal differential... However on this video, you're using the 30k proper differential grease inside the sealed differentials, and the moly lithium grease for the outside gears. I have both Stampede's XL5 and the VXL. I was just wondering why you'd use the different greases, for the diff's on each Stampede. Did you simply change your stance on which grease due to experience? or is it the white litihum for the 2WD's and the dark moly lithium for the 4WD's ? (not internal sealed diffs) just the outside coatings, I'm talking about.
6 years later and you're still helping out thousands of RC folks.

No, diff oil inside. Grease on outside, either kind, doesn't matter
