Ads have been tested and used in cell phone trash for over a decade now. They perfected microtransactions on those games too before they saturated consoles and PCs. The only surprise is that it took them this long to start trying to shovel in ads. My guess is that they wanted to lure people in with subscriptions first like Netflix did before eventually moving to ads but the subs just wasn't working out as well as they hoped.
