    29:35 It actually IS possible to get above 12 workers with Omen of Housing, which seems like an auto-pick for this strat.

      @@aldenpotamus Ehehe. We had an "Omen of Housing" VS the "Omen of the Lone Scavenger" discussion in your Omen tier video. I claimed Omen of Housing is better but I guess my arguments were not good enough :).
      So yea... how have you not use Omen of Housing? Glad your eyes are finally opened ^^. it is understandable though there is so many Omens and sometimes it is hard to see them for what they are between all the noise and combinations and opportunity costs...
      So yea Omen of Housing. Little bit slower on start, you do need to buy that first house to get it on the same level as Omen of the Lone Scavenger but after that.. it just keeps on giving! 2 extra workers rock wherever you get them.
      I guess in this strategy it is even stronger.
      Thnx for the video btw :D it is very insightful.
      Cheers!

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому

      So I think it is good, the omission was mostly a brain fart... but the one strike against Omen of Housing is that most maps max at 4-5 corpse mountains, which doesn't require 14 workers, so the ROI on housing is lower just because you're doing piles or gold mine/ scav camps with the surplus workers.
      It's a great point though and I'll be testing with it today on stream!

    I remember when I discovered corpses and found someone mention that they were based on how many units died on a tile I changed up my whole strategy to maximize them. The issue was I had not seen that they needed to be in the haven to get the best chances. So I ended up doing whole runs with the worst of both worlds: I would keep all walls fully intact and wait for the monsters to get into melee with them before I killed them. This caused me to have to spend so many mats on walls and even with that awful version of this strategy the rewards were astounding.

    It's frustrating how anti-fantasy this best strat is, and makes you play. Destroying your own walls and waiting for the horde to get close, largely ignoring the city-building aspect of the game because the corpses are too good, making the town "panic" the whole time... idk, it just doesn't feel great.

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому +8

      @goatmeal5241 I hear you, and I'll say that I think we all need to find the way to play the game that fits us best. The game is very beatable with or without this strategy... it's just as achievable to win the game with a bustling metropolis as it is with a baren DMZ full of corpses, the choice is yours. I'll continue to play all the different way, but when I see a new powerful strat I'm gonna keep spreading the gospel :)

    • @vexiIIe
      @vexiIIe 11 місяців тому +4

      I agree, it's ultra cringe and should not be in the game. But it's fixable, with "Better Corpses" mod you can ignore this "best strat" and stop being frustrated.

      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому +2

      Took a look at the mod, I think it's cool that you made a mod to change this dynamic, though I'm not sure that the way you went about changing it is the way I'd like to see it addressed. For context the mod just makes it so you always get the max number of corpses.
      I understand that right now modding the last spell is pretty painful, so any mod is an accomplishment, but I think that the idea of there being some strategy to corpses is a nice thing and I think that this solution would honestly just make the game rather easy.

    Great video as always. One thing i think i can add to is : Catapults are kinda good for this strategy too, since they're cheaper and much better than ballistas at softening enemies (they hit more enemies, bring them down to the kill range, and we can fully control where and when to hit) during the first few nights. After that, with how much resources we get from piles, we can replace them with ballista if needed to without any real consequences.

  • @earlkoh216

    I have a similar strat that you can try.
    1) tear down all walls.
    2) rebuild wooden walls 1 tile closer to the last spell. (Aka build the wall 1 space away from the original wall surrounding the town)
    3) only kill enemies attacking your wall.
    4) for later rounds, build a double wall.
    Why this works- imagine your haven is 20 by 20 grid. That is 400 squares. The outer grid where enemies tend to die tends to be the outer 200 squares. If you wall in, enemies mostly die in the perimeter of the wall which is 20x4= 80 squares.
    This strategy increases the number of deaths occuring per tile, which increases your total corpse piles.
    Its also relatively safe as you heroes can take cover behind the walls

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  7 місяців тому +2

      Hi Earl, I know a few folks that run a strat similar to this, and I definitely see the value... I've tried some variations on this theme in the past as well. I still find that the walls cause so much panic that I prefer to go without... but honestly that's one thing I love about TLS there's so many ways to play and so many viable strategies! Perhaps I'll revisit this one sometime soon and give it another look!

    I've had lower quality university lectures ffs :p this was so well done, big thanks.
    Would have liked to see your thoughts on some of the implications of this strat on other areas of the game.
    For instance, I had thought crit omen was as good as accuracy because its a way rarer roll until I started doing this strat, but your "softening up" easily turns into wasted resources with it. And in the later game, when most weapons oneshot, how do you even soften things up? Only thing i could think of was the one you mentioned - hand xbow. Already imo the best weapon in the game, now totally mandatory for most characters? And if so, it's weird because it worked so well with crit, but now crits turn into wasted resources... In general I feel like anything with rng is to be avoided now - human ballistae, (not really rng, but often takes me by surprise - poisonous), propagation (though aoe is better with the condensed enemies)
    I have also been thinking about if/how this changes the importance of movement stat - before I used to think it was one of the most important things in the game, but if you only have to move around inside the haven, or just outside, it seems to be worth quite a bit less.
    I can't really seem to decide, but it does make me wonder if the viability of tankier & melee heroes has increased, they can be really good bait to make enemies stand on particular squares to attack you from but also things just feel a lot more close quarters and less opportunities to run and hide sometimes, or u wanna keep softening the guys at the back, but to do so have to tank a little at the end of turns.
    I keep forgetting to try it, but have you tried putting some single stone walls dotted around inside the haven to act as enemy magnets - both to keep them away from ballistae, but also to get them to stand on the same squares more often?
    And omens; the extra house seems like a no brainer, but has this bumped up any others do you think? Or any you see as pretty OP when doing this?

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому

      @botchedmandala5197 thank you for the compliment it was a fun video to make, and I'm glad it was appreciated.
      Crit remains very strong... I generally think that the softening up transitions to obliterating everything somewhere around night 4 anyways... so I don't worry too much about Crit generally.
      Movement is perhaps less critical because there is less ground to cover, but there's also something to be said for being able to zip around your entire town as needed with a hero :)
      I think the problem with Tankier options is that the place this strat struggles is the corners of the base, and you can't really control the movement of enemies around the corners very well, aka you can't lure them into the center because there's other enemies already there.
      Single walls is interesting, I'd only be worried about the LoS issues with your heroes.
      Omen of extra house was definitely an omission, it's a great one to add. The only caveat being that the corpse piles limit means that you're not getting an extra mountain or elite carrion from taking it.

    • @botchedmandala5197
      @botchedmandala5197 11 місяців тому +1

      Glad it was fun to make :)
      So after night 4ish, do you just let them into the base without softening, or?
      Ah why the corners? It was a small consideration realy anyway, i think as you say, since u maybe do less dpa you need to compensate for that later, and a tank isnt what u want for that… although i guess one could prevent 3-4 enemies hitting your buildings, damage probably is still king.
      Ah thats a good point i guess wooden walls would be the one to try it with then, maybe stun traps around it too if youre flush on materials to help it survive longer
      Oh of course, i hadnt thought of that… maybe the rarity/level one then? And what do you think of the scavengey omens? Some really are so good i find it almost impossible to pass up and experiment with others so ill see what u think first lol :p
      Also, my interpretation from the diagram is that, maybe once ballistae are up, a wall 2 squres in seems pretty good, do you just keep building ballistae, or what do you do with matierals later on?
      Thanks for the reply btw :)

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому +2

      Generally after the 4th night or so there's enough Ballista that most things are melting and the rest are easily dispatched... at some point you just hit a breaking point where everything within range of the ballista is already dead (including Bulkies).
      The Ballista's range lines up really well with the edges of the square, but since they target a diamond you have weaker coverage on the corners, and your heroes spend most of their time cleaning up that portion of the map.
      Rarity could actually be really strong now that I think about it, good call. hmm.
      I generally build ballista till I cap out and then I build damage traps in all the haven tiles.
      Of course, always happy to hear from you!

      Good feedback for sure, I was a little worried about painting too narrow a picture of this. I don't think even the ballista are a requirement to action this strat so I didn't want to go too hard on the fortress master spam approach.
      I think a lot of folks in the community actually consider ballista spam kinda cheese so I want to be careful with how hard I advocate for it. It does make the game far less exciting after all 😊

  • @Banestalk
    @Banestalk 11 місяців тому +1

    I wonder, is it maybe worthwhile to build walls inside the haven, about half way to the magic circle? The idea being that they will "concentrate" the enemies on the tiles in front of the wall, maximizing corpse generation further. You'd probably incur a lot of panic that way, but do the resources you loose out on that way really matter?

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому

      The panic doesn't really matter... I'll often lost S/A rank and not care because the corpse piles are so worth it. That being said there is too much of a good thing regarding concentration. Once a tile is saturated killing more there is actually a waste. I suspect that Walls would probably lessen the number of concentrated tiles. In some runs I've built them and they're ok, but usually I build them much closer to the circle.

    29:30 "you will never have more than 12 workers"
    I dunno, maybe this was for an older version of the game? the version i'm playing has an omen of housing, which allows you to build an additional house and have a total of 15 workers maximum.
    obviously, you need to have that omen filling up an omen slot.

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  2 місяці тому

      Same version... I was a little overly categorical in trying to make my point. You are correct that with Omen of Housing you can exceed 12 workers, and in some cases that can be a very strong omen towards the end of games.

      @@aldenpotamus I had to spreadsheet and track my omens for the Visionary achievement (and I didn't use any of the more x weapons omens). I did multiple runs on Lakeburg, Glenwald and some Elderlicht on Normal to get the achievement. I'm surprised you haven't unlock "Finish Him" Use Fatality to Execute an Elite, with all your punch builds (I did this one in Glenwald, but has to try hard not to kill the elite them with other weapons first) I'm also surprised there was no Achievement for unlocking all the favors from the Twins. I did have to specific runs to unlock some achievements also e.g. War Factory (Produce 40 items in a run), It Never Holds (60 Reinforce Stone Walls in a run) and Stun Fest (Stun 50 Enemies in one night). It's funny that the Architect (build every building once) achievement is only achieved by 1.1% of players... I guess most people forget the "Store" is already built in most runs. I did demolish and recreate (before Elderlicht) to unlock. To unlock all achievements from 0 to 100% I completed the following runs: Glindenberg (10 runs APOC 6), Lakeburg (17 runs APOC 4), Glenwald (6 runs APOC 3), Elderlict (15 runs APOC3), Glintfein (16 runs APOC3). I was STUCK on Elderlict APOC 2 until I watched this video... and since this video I have NOT built another production building. I did abandon about 4-5 runs in Glintfein, as I was unhappy with the generated crew and weapons and I did jump from Normal, to APOC3, and skipped APOC1 and APOC2, but for all the others, I did all the previous APOCS. Thank you so much for your video, I wouldn't have completed this game without this video shifting my thinking on how to play the game to break the last two seals. In regard to your question, re: new games, like you, I have a deep wish list. Top of my wish list is "Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew" , King Arthur: Legend Rise, Hostile Takeover, The Lamplighter League. Also, games I played and didn't expect to be little treasures were, "Pathway" (60+ hours) and "Roguebook" (200+ hours.. it's a grind to 100% though.. which I haven't done yet, 3 achievements remain) and I want to finish Mutant Year Zero. Thank you again for you fantastic advice on The Last Spell (I'm sure I'll have a sneaky game or two waiting for the DLC to arrive, and try to get through the other APOC levels I've not completed. Although.. I'm not going to reattempt Elderlict or Glintfein.. I'm parking those two. 🤣Have a good one!

    Would this strategy work on Elderlicht? On one hand, we want to stay close to the center, but on the other hand, we need to fly and extinguish the flames. Would completely ignoring indestructible enemies pass the exam?

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому +2

      I think you're the second or third person to ask this... So today on stream we're gonna try it out.
      But my general this is that:
      - not pushing back the fog means a lot less potential places for the flames to spawn... So knock those out quickly and get to work.
      - need to find a place for the shop as energy potions and warp crystals are so important
      I think fully ignoring the ghosts is a mistake though.

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  3 місяці тому +1

      So it depends quite a bit... if you're running ballista ball of death strats then generally I get to 32 ballista (cap) and then start getting gear. If I'm running a self imposed no ballista run then I'll switch to gear relatively earlier, because I think the break even for gold is much earlier, and it's the materials that is the most irreplaceable product of going resources on corpse piles. If you don't need the materials it's likely that gear is the better take.

    Okay. Update. I just finished Elderlicht Apoc 2 using this strategy, and found it much easier than my other runs. I did have to restart my run a three times to understand the best start in the initial first few turns. The first couple of runs I waited for the monsters to come to me, but without Ballista's to defend, I burnt through Mana and was not able to recover in later nights. So, now, for the first three nights, I started like any other run. Advancing toward the monsters to take out the majority. Therefore I don't use as much mana and protect my base scavenger camp. Once I have a obtained two more houses and started to build some defence I then stated to wait for the monster to advance. I didn't use the seer at all to push back the mist. I did upgrade see to see what enemies were coming in the wave to prepare the correct equipment and potions (especially with Bulkies). On the last night, I managed to get four hero's around the boss on the first night he appeared and took him out with the first hero. Now, onto Apoc 3 (and the next achievement).

      @@aldenpotamus - as the base is able to defend itself a bit better, I can teleport out and take care of the wells and come back into the base. A couple of hidey holes in the base to retreat into (behind a iron gate) is also helpful. On night 12 in APOC3 and still holding, I did lose the Seer and Healing Building on night 9, which I later rebuilt night 10. I also try and have one large multi-hitter (7+ hits) to hold a corner. My biggest issue is taking down the Mist Orbs. But I'm nearly there. I must say, I would not have got this far without using this new strategy.

      @aldenpotamus  11 місяців тому

      Sorry to hear it Graymer, I've run this strategy through Glintfein and you're right that a mistake on orbs can be catastrophic, but those are 100% avoidable. Also there's a minor advantage to this strat on that map as you fill all the voids between your buildings which bombs sneaky bombs hiding behind your buildings.
      Unfortunately I think the need to be very careful about not detonating bombs is a cross cutting requirement of the final map... accidental detonations are always going to cause havoc and need to be a top priority to avoid.
