    Today I learned you can cycle between the primary and secondary attribute on level up... that alone would have made the video worth it but it is overall really well explained and easy to digest, looking forward to checking other content concerning TLS.

    This is a really well put together guide, I especially like the description of the hero movement and the important emphasis on the classlessness of the heroes (it needs to be poited out to new players that the starting weapon assignment does not determine the hero class and often changing the damage type for the hero can lead to better performance). I have made a list of notes and more specific details regarding especially the topic of the attributes:
    - I am pretty sure there is some randomisation of a few attributes for each hero regardless of their traits/perks/gear - namely the HP, Mana, HP/Mana regen and I think MovePoints as well.
    - The starting hero gear with no unlocks consists of just a weapon, armor and pants.
    - There are traits that disable specific item slots (good example - Geralt is a nudist and has no armor slot). Heroes with these traits are best replaced ASAP as these traits are some of the worst disabilities for your heroes.
    - The base AP value without unlocks is 5 AP, early in the beta it used to be 4 AP and the game was very hard without AP increasing unlocks.
    - Resistance reduction has better lvlups than Dmg+, but cant lower the enemy resistance below 0, so it is good to take some (maybe even over Dmg+), but not too much (depends on the type of enemies you face, the basic clawers get to about 15% Res at the latest nights of later maps). There are abilities that can lower the Res of enemies to as low as -50%, res reduction will do you no good here. Also, Magic damage ignores half of enemy resistance, so Res reduction is bad on magic damage users.
    - Accuracy is important especially for Ranged damage users, since ranged damage increases enemy dodge the further the enemy is. Many high profile enemies have quite high dodge value (runners and crawlers especially). There are also some skills with the "inaccurate" tag, which increase the enemy dodge value as well, on the other hand there are skills with "no dodge" tag, where accuracy doesnt matter.
    - For defences - Block goes well together with Resistance (Resistance lowers the incoming damage which is then blocked) and Dodge goes well with Armor (Armor soaks up the occasional attacks that go through the Dodge - dodge is capped at 95% and on top of that, some enemies have high values of accuracy, especially in later nights. However, there are certain skills that can lower enemy accuracy, which goes well with dodge tanking, e.g. the Pillar of Light skill on the Power staff). Many experienced players will tell you defences are pointless waste of resources since you should not get hit in the first place. This is IMO wrong. Many strong builds take advantage of being surrounded by enemies and higher tier armors give you a lot of defenses, so you can often rely on them and dont have to take many defensive attribute lvlups (but they are far from useless, e.g. on tanky builds rare Block/Dodge lvlup is certainly very good).
    - Reliability is overall by itself quite a weak attribute, it is better on weapons with higher damage such as axes or longbows, but still not very good. I think the Exploit weakness perk synergy with Reliability was removed in the 1.0 patch making it even worse attribute.
    - Important note: Different damage multiplies (i.e. Dmg+, Phys/Magic/Ranged Damage, Opportunism, Isolation, Momentum and Critical Multiplier) are stacked multiplicatively. This means it is better to get more different sources of damage increase - e.g. it is better to have 10% Dmg+ and 110% Phys damage (121 Dmg with 100 base Dmg Phys attack) than just 20% Dmg+ (120 Dmg with 100 base Dmg attack). So it is good to e.g. combine investment in Critical chance/multiplier with Dmg+ and Opportunism or Isolation or Momentum (depending on the used weapon), or combine Momentum with some other damage multiplier on non-crit builds. This also makes Critical hits extremely potent (high multiplication numbers) and increases the value of high base damage (higher base gets increased more with multiplicative damage multipliers).
    - Healing Received attribute influences the amount of health restored by the Daily Health Regeneration as well.
    - Poison damage is not increased by any other damage multiplier, so for builds that want to rely on poison damage only the Poison Damage attribute is important together with attributes helping to deliver the poison (Accuracy, Propagation Bounces for Druidic Staff, Multi-Hits for Dagger), and possibly Stun Chance (poison goes well with stun thanks to the Septic Shock perk in the Poison tree, you want to have the Poison tree available if you plan to rely on poison damage).
    - Stun Chance used to be extremely weak attribute to take at lvlups, since the combined stun chance was capped at 100% and the common stun skills had base stun chance of about 50% it was extremely easy to hit the cap with the Stunning! perk in the debuff tree (+15% chance) and any stun chance increasing item. With the 1.0 patch the Stun Chance looks much more appealing for lvlups on specialized stun builds (with the Debuff tree) or on poison builds.
    - Propagation actually reaches 1 more enemy compared to what was demonstrated, e.g. Propagation x4 means the skill hits 5 enemies (it hits the target enemy and propagates 4 times). Each consecutive propagation bounce decreases in damage according to the Propagation Damage attribute. This makes the Propagation Damage attribute (capped at 100%!) extremely useful for builds that want to deliver damage using skills with propagation.
    - The Miscellaneous perk tree (choice of 3 perks from a pool of 5 in each perk level - 60% chance you get a specific perk) is actually less random than the Phys/Magic/Ranged perk trees (1 perk from pool of 2 - 50% chance you get a specific perk).
    - The items give attributes based both on their item category (e.g. Cloth pants give Dodge) and on their item type (e.g. Worn Pants give Mana). The item category attribute bonus can be easily missed and forgotten about since it is displayed separately from the other attribute bonuses on the brown background of the item pop-up window.
    That is probably all I wanted to add to this, sorry for the wall of text 😯

      Hey Rube, first off thanks for your in depth comment... for the record I had to get up off the couch and go into my office and get a split screen going to respond, but here we go.
      - 100% there is randomization of HP, Mana, Movement and a few others as well, but the variance is generally not enough for me to consider redirecting a character one way or another.
      - Good point, I often forget to talk about the full new player experience, so much changes in the game through unlocks that even though I started from scratch not that long ago it all blurs together.
      - So I generally agree with this, though rarely replace heroes even at the highest Apocs, the cost is rather high... and some of the gear disabling traits are actually kind nice (like Nudist coming with crit).
      - AP is what makes the magic happen, it's why I still value Vitality omen somewhat highly.
      - Res Reduction is a attribute that I have some mixed feelings about, specifically because it won't let you go below 0% and the level up amount aren't that much more than damage ups of the same tier. Overall, it's a stat that benefits you against certain enemies only which sometimes makes it a hard sell.
      - Even with weapons like crossbows I find that around 30 accuracy is the sweet spot, sometimes with gear I'll find myself going well beyond that, but mostly that seems like a good rule of thumb. Good tip though, using no dodge abilities on the right targets helps a lot.
      - I'm one of those players that generally thinks that a good offense is the best defense in this game... abilities like poisonous and spikey counter don't scale with number of targets well and generally adrenaline rush just hits the AP cap super quickly in my experience. What would you say is your #1 defensive build?
      - Didn't actually know that Daily Health was modified by healing received, that's cool!
      - Poison Tree is an absolute must for poison builds, but I'm always surprised by how much better Contagion is than Epidemic.
      - I'm really liking stun builds in 1.0, the changes to the cap really made stunning things much more viable. Also I think there's still something fishy with spreading stun with contaminate... it seems to land too often.
      - That's a good clarification for propagate, I'm going to have to pay closer attention to that, and that was a miss on propagate damage. Good call out.
      - Good point, I was actually sure if it was 3/5 or 3/6... but some of those misc perks are just so important to build. Looking at your volatile.
      - I hadn't noticed that exact behavior, but it explains a bit of the nuance of item generation. Interesting.
      Still so much to learn, but thank you for watching with such a critical eye!

      @@aldenpotamus Thanks for the reply! Its nice of you to take time to read such a lenthy comment and even come up with a structured reply.
      "What would you say is your #1 defensive build?" I have to admit I am more of a theory-crafter than actually experienced TLS player due to becoming father quite recently, but in my last Elderlicht run before 1.0 I used 2 tanky builds. One dodge tank with Power Staff and 1H Axe and one block tank with mainly 2H Axe and Magic orb as a bit of an afterthought.
      The dodge tank I think is easier to pull out thanks to the Nimbleness perk (and before 1.0 the Shorter weapons perk, these 2 were +25% dodge together) and the abundance of the dodge attribute on a lot of good gear. The obvious drawback is the low 95% cap on dodge, which forces you to use weapons with accuracy debuffing skills if you want to have really effective dodge tank. I used the Power Staff which has Accuracy debuff on the basic Pillar of Light skill. This synergizes extremely well with Opportunism since you get 9 debuffs for the Sadist perk for just 1AP with an attack on top of that. That makes Scorching Wave and the basic 1H Axe attack very strong. Alternatively you could couple the dodge tank with Rifle, which has Accuracy debuff on the Suppressive Fire skill, and use it in conjunction with the Proximity Shot perk for good damage on the Hip Shot/Power Shot/Heavy bolt/anything on the Pistol. This build benefits from the Opportunism stacking as well.
      The block tank I built on a hero with the Poison and Defense perk tree. I made the hero mostly a passive damage dealer with Human ballista, Spiky counter and Poisonous perks. It is funny to be still holding the line even if you are stunned by the warrior ghost. I also took both Toxic Leech and Vampire for health restoration. The Berserk perk is an obvious enabler of the build (if you have access to BOOM instead, you should build for it). It performed really well in about the first third of the Elderlicht run, then started to fade off and then picked up in the end again after I got to the Berserk perk. I didnt have Mana Shield available, but the 1.0 buffed version looks very strong for this kind of build. I picked the 2H Axe for the Super Spin, which really benefits from going into the horde. The Leap skill is also uselful for its mobility, enabling you to really get in. Magic orb I took to have some single target damage with Infect and the hero also had some Poison damage from traits, so the Putrid Ball benefited as well.

    This was all excellent information. I haven’t picked the game up yet, but I’ve watched a few game play videos. I’m always curious about why the weapon types were chosen over others and why you don’t use some skills very often.
    The explanation on the rarity was helpful. It seems the name informs the stat found on the gear. Are there tiers of the same item as well as rarity? I see some I-V ranking. Does that just scale the stat and base damage of the weapon?

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  Рік тому +1

      Hiya Carl! So yes each piece of gear can have a level 0-5 and a rarity Common to Epic. The level determines the base damage (which all skills use as a baseline) and stat quantity while the rarity determines the number of and quality of additional modifiers.
      There are also variants of each weapon Hammer vs Mithril Hammer vs Silver Hammer, and each of those comes with unique stats that are always the same.
      Hope this clarified it a bit! Cheers!

    Thanks for the in depth explanation. When you were talking about the block stat, you mentioned that it applied after resistance, but how does it interact with physical damage against armor? If you have 10 block and get hit by an attack with 50 physical damage, do you take 80 or 90 armor damage? I'd imagine that the 50 physical damage first gets reduced to 40 physical damage from block, which then gets doubled because it's applying the damage to armor, but I'm unsure.

    • @aldenpotamus

    When kitting out my hero, what's more important, the rarity of a weapon or the level of a weapon? Is a red crossbow 1 with +isolation, mana and action points better than a blue crossbow 5 with just +armor and dodge for example?

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  Рік тому

      Really depends... you can have a red crossbow with nothing but Block, Reliability and a side of Propagation damage vs a Blue Crossbow 3 levels higher with Damage and Accuracy that blows it out of the water.
      The biggest factor in choosing higher level items is the base damage goes up which can scale massively... often I'll have a few weapons that are low tier but I keep around for stats, but usually I should be swapping them out because the base damage is so valuable.

    Great guide! One question, which damage attribute is the most valuable between damage %, crit or physical/ranged/magic damage? Do you get more damage just focusing on one of these stats or is it better to combine them? To be more precise; Would it be more valuable to just take for example damage % on every level up or is it better to take other types of damage attributes and spread your damage scaling between crit, damage % and physical/ranged or magic?

    • @RubeLott
      @RubeLott Рік тому +1

      From purely mathematical sense it is better to combine the damage attributes since they stack multiplicatively. In practice, however, there are many other factors that come to play - the availability of the attribute on gear, the numerical value of the lvlup, the caps on the attributes. Generally I would say the best primary attribute for damage is Dmg+, but you will need some accuracy (quite a lot of it for ranged damage dealers), some Res reduction is good too (it has better lvlups than Dmg+, but cant lower res below 0, dont take Res reduction on Magic damage users since Magic damage ignores half of enemy res by itself) and Crit chance if you plan to pick crit synergistic perks (Crit chance lvlup is better than Dmg+, but the cap is quite low, you can easily reach it combined with perks and gear, you will need even less if you take Bully perk from the Debuff tree).
      The secondary attributes are much harder to pin than the primary ones since there are more of them and their choice at lvlup is more random. Phys/Magic/Ranged dmg has worse lvlups than Dmg+ and should be probably targeted only for builds which deal only the specified dmg type. Crit Multi has high cap and very good lvlups, so it is very good for Crit builds. Momentum, Isolation and Opportunity are all very good lvlups for the builds where they are applied appropriately. Poison stands out, because poison damage does not interact with much of the defenses or other dmg multipliers, so builds that plan to rely on the poison damage should heavily focus on the poison damage attribute.

      Great question Ajdin, and thank you Rube for the solid answer. To try to be brief, specific damage types (physical, ranged or magic) compete in a different pool than the other damage attributes and as such are hard to compare.
      I generally think of Crit as a bit of an all or nothing stat, either I'm building for it or I'm not... but damage (the generic one) is something I take on everyone, who doesn't want more damage.
      But more broadly it often depends on the build, opportunism with the right weapons scales far better than specific damage type as an example, and physical damage doesn't if you're a hybrid character with a pistol.
      Rule of thumb though, diversifying your damage sources is good, and be careful with specificity if it doesn't benefit all of your kit.

    Wait, so “opportunism” bonus is applied even on weapons that don’t have opportunism attacks?! Oh man, I thought it only added to the specific opportunism attacks. Same with isolation, I thought it only added to the longbow and magic ball thing lol thanks!

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  Рік тому

      Yup! When weapons have modifiers that's a multiplier on their opportunism or isolation... A great example from today's stream was a hero with a wand hitting isolated targets for 3x what they were hitting grouped mobs for.
      Omens for isolation and opportunism are quite solid for that reason!
      So glad the guide helped and you learned something new! Cheers!

      I don't blame anyone (old or new) for making the mistake; only having opportunism/isolation/momentum/etc. for specific attacks was how it used to work, and they never updated the UI or anything to explain it.

      Very true Zeyphr, it was mostly covered in patch notes when they made the changes. Notably momentum is still a modifier that only affects skills with the modifier. Cheers!

    Sometimes it feels like propagation against 2 or 3 dudes, doesn’t do the full 6+ bounces. Is that a bug or does it need a certain number of guys to work properly?

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  Рік тому +1

      So despite the way propagation appears it actually calculates the kills after each jump (this is so your lightning doesn't hit an already dead enemy)... but what this means is that if your propagate's damage kills one of the enemies in a pair it will end. Propagate abilities automatically stop if there's no valid move for them.
      Hope this helps!

    Does the perk "Blood Magic" interact with the perk "Critical Runes"? As in, does "Blood Magic" give me 40% crit since all mana is transformed?

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  Рік тому +1

      It does not, I tried it once and it gave nothing... That being said Blood Magic now transforms mana related abilities into health related ones, I don't know if Critical Runes is one, but I suspect it is and will function off missing health!

      So definitively, it does not give you 40% crit, but instead is changed to work based off health missing.

    Jack of all trades is a master a none, but better than a master of one ==. So tired of people misusing the quote/saying...

    • @aldenpotamus
      @aldenpotamus  8 місяців тому

      Hi @4ksandknives honestly I've never heard the quote in it's full form before, so thank you for sharing it.
      The second half is a really transformative addition and completely changes the meaning, which is really interesting to someone who'd been misusing it for years now. I can see why it gets so often misquoted though... especially in this line of work (video games) the quote changes from being a very succinct explanation of "the way most games work" into generally bad advice in most video games. Specialization is really important in most games and taking a "jack of all trades" approach is normally going to lead to suboptimal play.
      It's understandable, at least in the world that I frequent, for the quote to have been divided in this way as the first portion really speaks to a very real dynamic of games and character design in a very memorable and eloquent way.
      As a final note, just remember that most of us unfamiliar with the origin or totality of the quote aren't wielding it with any malice... and we don't have a mailing list where we plot to all use it in videos that you watch. Instead knowledge is something we all acquire over the course of our lives and those who have it have the option to share it in a way that invites people to enjoy it with them or persecutes them for not knowing something they were "supposed to". It's honestly a cool fact that clearly a lot of us have wrong, but the delivery can make a big difference in the way people see it.
