For anybody saying "this is a remake of Stardew Valley" or "This look like Animal Crossing" Actually Harvest Moon came out way before animal crossing and Stardew Valley got their idea based off the Harvest Moon Series

You know what happened? Those people that said that are probably just people that jumped on hype trains. I remember animal crossing being hyped up during the quarantine... Real gamers know that Story of Season is the true Harvest Moon and that Harvest Moon/Story of Season is the OG of farming games.
IKR. but animal crossing is not a farming simulator like story of seasons. Not saying harvest moon is just a farming simulator though cause It's more than that and I love this game even if I've been spoiled by animal crossing. This game is my childhood and would definitely come back to it. Animal crossing and harvest moon are their own unique genres.

6:37 the gameboy advance release was actually a remake of Harvest Moon: Back to Nature for the PS1 in 1999. That makes Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town a remake of a remake.

@@Ruby_Mochii boy and girl is back to nature but with the girl character cause back to nature never had the girl. Harvest Moon 64 was almost the same as Back To Nature just a few minor differences.
@@Kunzite1982 Yes, Back to Nature for Girl was never released outside of Japan the first time around. So Harvest Moon Boy and Girl was a port that contained both Back to Nature and Back to Nature for Girl. 64 was my first HM game. And yeah, Back To Nature recycled characters but improved on a lot of the ideas in 64.

The artstyle is very cutesy ofc, but for my personal taste, I wish they made the characters look more mature! I mean players that were fans of the original GBA version are adults now too~
I totally agree, plus there is something a little weird about the characters looking so child-like when part of the game involves marrying and having children 😂
I feel like the characters have gotten lazy. They lost their bulk like Gotts, Harris (he was much slimmer), Cliff, Duke Or Doug or both? and Zack is a bit different and rounded. The original kinda shows more of the village like life where people work hard and have some muscles at least. Maybe the character made everything too easy for them, that's why they're like that now Lol.
I am so glad I wasnt the only one that noticed this, and wanted it to be redone in a good art style not -well this lol. It's cute but it...it reminds me of those anime art from 2009 ..which are nice but it just doesn't fit this game, compared to the gorgeous graphics it feels oddly placed.

I totally get why the company felt the need to update the art style but I really do wish they'd go back to how it was on the older systems like ds. It was such a timeless look. I could return to harvest moon ds or ds cute in 10 years and it would still look good. Retro sure, but still incredibly bright and charming.
yes!! this is exactly how i feel, ive only ever played harvest moon tale of two towns but ive read a lot about the other games to learn about what the plot and characters and game play is like. Anyways i feel that ToTT has some of the best art of the harvest moon/SoS series that ive seen and i hope they move away from this overly polished chibi bobblehead style and move closer to the style of ToTT. I still love how beautiful the art is in that game every time i play
I personally cant stick with side scroller or 2d any more. And i cant understand why a company in 2021 would make a 2d game for a modern console. Thats not why people buy a switch. If you have a Gameboy or ds you can play all the side scroller or pixelated games you want. I personally would not have been able to play this game if they hadnt done this.
For those who aren't familiar with the game, it's actually one of the first farming/living simulation games when animal crossing or stardew valley didn't exist back then. Now which they made a much more modernized design with the character design and graphics, since this was originally called Harvest Moon: back to nature, it was actually one of the groundbreaking relaxing games back then psp and nintendo ds series.
Back to Nature was for the Playstation. This is a remake of the GBA game "Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town" Unless you mean "originally" as in the first entry, but that was also not back to nature. The original game was on the SNES and was just called "Harvest Moon". Also, Animal Crossing did indeed exist before the original of this particular game came out in 2003 on the GBA. Back in 2001 it was released in English speaking countries, while back in 94 the original Animal Crossing released on the N64 c: Additionally (and this is separate from my correction) if you want a current "Harvest Moon" game, make sure it's not labeled "Harvest Moon" if it came out after 2013, it should be "Story of Seasons" as the localizers in North America did an absolute dick move and kept the rights to the name "Harvest Moon" and made TERRIBLE knock offs of it.

I feel like most of the characters lost their charm. Like what did they do to Zack and Jeff??? And Gotz, and I used to think Carter was attractive, like????? i just don't care for the style at all. I probably would've bought this if not for the awful art.
Popuri is still nice. Didn't like what they did to Lillia, Ann (Ran?), Karen and the Doc. Overall I really like the quality of the artwork, but I miss that old japanese-style cartoons look that the characters had.
I remember as a young girl being forced to play as a boy farmer if I wanted to marry the girls when I would much rather play as who I was IRL. Then feeling meh playing a girl farmer bc I didn't dislike the guys, but I really wanted to just marry the girls. Now that it's just standard in this game, it really means so much to me.
Except they didn't even mention whether that's possible in this game in the review? Or mention how they actually marketed an entirely different version of this game with the girl option?
Does the conversation of heart event will be different too with girl×girl/ boyxboy scene? Or it only change the character the we play, and the bachelorettes will always see u as man?
My mom is on vacation Friday and I can see her stealing my switch for the week, BtN was her addiction, but she could never get into FoMT cause of the small screen!

Many of the reviews have been comparing this game to Stardew Valley and then giving it a bad score. I've played the original 2003 version and it was nostalgic and enjoyable in its own way. Just because it lacks certain features and elements that were exclusive to Stardew Valley doesn't mean it's a poor game.
Well stardew valley was heavily inspired by harvest moon, so the creator upgraded and added QoL elements to it. Does not make harvest moon any less enjoyable tho. The history is deep with this game.
I think part of the problem is there are people who don't usually play harvest moon reaching for this one. And they're not used to the franchise quirks and weirdness. Stardew Valley was something of a love-letter to the original harvest moon games, but it didn't have some of the funky stuff which can makes the games a little less broadly appealing.
Aside from rival marriage, it is perfect replica of the first one with lots of improvement. People who said it was a stardew clone or rip off probably an uncultured swine who never know where farming+dating simulation begin.
I’m still sad about the direction they went with when transitioning to 3d. The portraits became more and more childlike and I can’t get past it and the worse feeling controls of the 3d versions. But maybe that’s me
While it may not be the majority opinion, it's not "just you" despite what others may say. Sometimes transitions to 3D are awkward and for some, it's harder to adjust to than for other players. Nothing wrong with that.
I totally get, what you mean. I saw some other games that were released by Natsume under the name "Harvest Moon" and I didn't like it at all. The character in "The Lost Valley" (?) just look so ... strange. That is the only way I can describe it. Moreover, it gave of a Minecraft-like atmosphere - at least in the in-game footage and gameplay I've seen. But those are the games released by Natsume. The actual, original "Harvest Moon" series by Marvelous is now released under the name "Story of Seasons" as most of you surely know. Those games look a lot better than those creepy designs Natsume has used in some of their games. The remake (SoS: FoMT) looks really nice. Sure, there are some new character designs that I do not like, but they have improved some of the older ones as well.
So far, I'm absolutely loving this remake. One thing that makes me incredibly happy is that tools like the axe and sickle can be equipped independently of your bag, meaning they no longer take up precious inventory space. By far one of the biggest QoL improvements in this remake, and I genuinely hope the next SoS game keeps this feature.
I was worried this game would be a soulless port, and feel like a watered down mobile game. Instead, I've been blissfully soaking in the fact that I am playing a true Harvest Moon right now in 2020, and that Friends of Mineral Town got this love.
one of the things i find with the story of stardew moon factory genre (or farming sim genre) is that it breeds a very uncomfortable thought in my head that plagues a lot of gamers it goes "but I might need it later" because i don't always know how much of each material i'm gonna need to upgrade my stuff i find myself hoarding a big supply of random crap in my storage box (that milk that's been in my crate for 2 weeks must have surely gone off by now).
Well in the original FoMT games you didn’t have to hoard that much, at least early on, because building only requires money and lumber. On the other hand if this game is like the original you’ll want to avoid destroying small rocks because they make better fences than the real fences (they don’t rot).

It's definitely expensive as a remake, but considering it's one of my favorites in the series and I'm so thirsty for more SoS content, I still bought it.

Friends of Mineral Town was the very first HM game I've ever played on game boy and discovered my love for farming games. This is so nostalgic. I was just 14 then and now I'm married. I'm definitely getting this game to relive the feels.

Magical Melody was one of my first Harvest Moon games, so I’ve always loved the cutesy, chibi art style of it. I’m so glad they used the same style on this remake. I know it’s not for everyone, but I hope that doesn’t deter too many people from playing it. It would be awesome if this sells well and enables other older Harvest Moon games to be remade.
Idc what any of the ranking articles online say. Magical melody is definitely the best harvest moon game in the series including the story of seasons series which if y’all don’t know is apart of the harvest moon series
Ahhh, even if it's not much as other people say, I miss my Harvest Moon games. My first game was HM: Island of Happiness and I loved it. From there I played: Sunshine Islands, Grand Bazaar, Tale of Two Towns, DS Cute. I just loved farming and befriending everyone. Then I got introduced to the Rune Factory Series & I love love LOVE ALL of the Rune Factory. I really am thankful for this game because it made my childhood fun even if I was lonely (we moved to a neighborhood without that much children in the community)

This game looks so cute! I'm so glad that it lets you walk on crops in this version. The worst part of FOMT was not being able to reach the tomato in the middle of your crop square until the last day of summer. My one hesitation is that the art style makes all the characters look so young
That's what the little elves were for. In the original I had 3 for watering and 3 for harvesting. I would rotate daily who would help, and that way I could keep them happy all the time. At max stats they were more than enough to help me with a full farm.
It be my first time playing friends of mineral town and I can't wait to play my copy of the game. 😁 and my first harvest moon game was a wonderful life on GameCube.
That's because story of seasons IS HARVEST MOON. Another company(Publisher) has the rights to the English name "Harvest moon" so they had to change the name to Story of Seasons to keep bringing the games to the US. The old publisher is now using the Harvest moon name to sell shitty games ran on the fame of the name alone.

I am mentally preparing to be annoyed to the comparisons to Animal Crossing when Story of Seasons (or Harvest Moon) is a farming life simulator and does not play like Animal Crossing at all. I do wonder if Stardew Valley helped them decide to remake one fo the best games in the Harvest Moon franchise. My first game was Harvest Moon DS Cute (which I would link up with my husband's old copy of Friends of Mineral Town), so I am familiar with the Friends of Mineral town characters, but I haven't played it yet. We are both looking forward to playing this!

I don't even know why people compare these two in the first place. I'd understand the comparison with Stardew Valley (since it was heavily inspired by SoS and introduced some modern, well-thought out changes), but Animal Crossing was never a real framing sim to begin with... Unless you count "hunting for villagers" and planting a couple of fruit trees a farming sim experience 🤷♀️

Exactly, they're not similar games nor were they intended to be. It's irritating to see people put ACNH and Stardew Valley on the same level when AC has been around since 2001 and is a different type of game and Stardew was directly inspired by HM.
I'm not sure I fully agree with you "less complex features" statement. The mining in the older handheld titles was FAR superior and more complex than in some current Story of Seasons games where you don't actually have to descend a mine. You just hit things a few times a day. (Which is sad because I loved the mining from this version)
No plot? Sounds perfect, I love games that just toss me in and let me explore and build. Also OMG the crops have star levels, that means the seed maker is in this game.

People forget that Stardew started as a mod of Harvest moon. He took Harvest moon and modded it so much it became a different game. Stardew is different but wouldn't exist without Harvest moon. This game also seems like 5 steps back from the progress that Harvest moon/ Story of Seasons has progressed to... But it is a remake so I get it. I hope they remake Harvest moon: Another Wonderful life, the characters in that game... Oh man please remake that next.
It really feels quite ... "uneventful" now that I play the remake as an adult, but the game still has its value. For me, it is a way to de-stress from university and just enjoy the atmosphere. You said, that the other Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons games have made progress in a way, that this game has not. What exactly do you mean by that? In which way have they made progress? I'm really curious, because I've only ever played two titles in the "Harvest Moon" named franchise (HM: FoMT and HM DS). Up till now, I have also not actually played other titles in the Story of Seasons series, I've only seen some artwort. Could you maybe recommend some to me?

For graphics: tale of 2 towns (pretty game, prettiest game in the franchise/series in my opinion), a new beginning, trio of towns For story: tale of 2 towns, another wonderful life, a new beginning, save the homeland(on PS4/PS store) Romance: another wonderful life, island of happiness, trio of towns (lots of Candidates) Dialogue: another wonderful life, tale of towns, island of happiness, trio of towns Gameplay (most fun): tale of 2 towns, island of happiness/sunshine islands, trio of towns, a new beginning, Customization: a new beginning(everything is Customizable), tale of 2 towns, story of seasons, trio of towns, I reccomend these games: Another wonderful life (available on PS4 store). Tale of towns: on the DS (I reccomend the 3DS version), A new beginning (really fun, everything is movable, you can craft things and place them where ever, ITS AWESOME). Story of seasons the 1st one is fun! Island of happiness is/sunshine islands are fun. Its very challenging and its got great romance lots of choices. If you don't romance someone they find another person to romance. Trio of towns is very fun, its like tale of 2 towns with not as good of a story but still fun. I really love harvest moon/story of seasons and have almost all the games except for the wii and GameCube games. Sorry this is so long but here is my top 5 games: 1. Another wonderful life(and the other version/limited editions of the game)( the story is great, interactions with villagers actually matter in this game, sad and happy things happe. And the music is popping. Gustave is the man. The NPCs have great personalities. 2. Tale of 2 towns(its pretty, it got great mechanics, fun story, the animals look great. The game is challenging. The crop and animal farming is very rewarding. 3. A new beginning ( its a lot of fun. You make the town. You shape and move everything.) Great clothes, & good Candidate for romance. 4. Island of happiness/sunshine islands. Its challenging but rewarding. The romance mechanics are really great and unique. You rebuild the island to make people move there. The characters are really fun but not talking to them will really ruin their friendship. Mining is really fun. 5. Trio of towns: tale of 2 towns on steroids but not as good of a story. I think they will remake AWL too. I've been playing SoS FOMT for 2 days and Forget-Me-Not Valley is quite frequently mentioned when you befriend most of the townies. If anything that felt like an indication of AWL remake(?) or at least the devs just threw that in there for nostalgia.
@@andyrrgrstevie836 Ohhh you're right! I think I remember in the original, if you played FOMT on the same system you got new characters in AWL. Also in the original game AWL I think characters would journey to mineral town for the day.
AWL was interesting. It was a little more "mature" and more emotional. But it sadly lacked content. It had no real festivals, very few events, the days are too long and you don't have enough to do to fill those days, etc. AWL isn't a bad Harvest Moon, but it's certainly not my favorite, and it ended up disappointing me a little.
man, a fresh remake of wonderful life would be perfect. w all the modern add ins of updated art/models, selecting if you want boy or girl farmer, and equal marriage like this remake and boom, literally the best harvest moon game in existence. wonderful life will always be my favourite.
The indicators on the tools, the stamina bars being rather visible, the characters friendship meters on the options menu, this is all little bits that make the game overall such a charming game and easy to understand
As a longtime harvest moon/story of seasons fan, I really enjoy this game. My only few critiques are that time moves waaaay too fast in this game. I get time moves fast in games like these as they should but it’s too fast. I also don’t believe it is worth $50. I know it’s a remake of a game I loved as a kid so that is fine, but the game is too small and basic to be $50. It does have its charms and I love the updates.
Who else remembers bringing basket at the mine? Collecting all unwanted ores and putting it on the basket and then sell it? Also the Experience Spam at your house for your tools? Haha

You know you're old when you know exactly what are the events of each character. This is the game that made me love Nintendo more. First was the Pokemon series.
Actually, this concept originated from the PS1 game called harvest moon: back to nature. The gba game friends of mineral town was already a remake. Imagine for more than 20 years, it is still being played by players like me that loved that farming simulation. Good game indeed!
Its Story of Seasons, of course its worth it xD I still enjoy the SNES Story of Seasons of game to this day (kinda weird refering the SNES Harvest Moon game as Story of Seasons lol). Also idk how Animal Crossing is anything much like Story of Seasons. I'm fan of both series but c'mon, Animal Crossing is real time and way more slow paced.

I first started on the original Harvest Moon on SNES. It's amazing to see how the series has grown and inspired so many games like it. We don't talk about the games after A New Beginning though.
I kinda like how this game is more straight forward. You just focus on growing your farm without worrying about storyline objectives. I've played Story of Seaons Trio of Towns and beaten the game's "main story" more than once. It's one of my favorite games. But my problem is the game requires me to do or buy things that I'll never use just to progress the story. It just feels like a waste. Doesn't seem the case with this game.
I disagree. Ive been playing this game for a few days now and it's incredible boring compared to ToT. There are absolutely no objectives or story. The only thing you do is buy, sell, buy, sell without any incentives as to why you're doing it other than expanding your farm or buying more animals. I was so disappointed.
Harvest Moon was my favorite game growing up.. I’ve played Magical Melody, A Wonderful Life, and some of the Wii versions and I love each and every one. I think my favorite is Magical Melody because I played it the most. I tried getting into Stardew but I never enjoyed it as much (I’m a visual person and I don’t like the stardew graphics).
I used to play Harvest Moon MFoMT on my GBA SP. Almost everything is the same. Same tune, same stories and events and more! They added animals, characters and a few locations but it's still great. I thought I'd be disappointed because I kinda liked the 2D art style better, but this game is awesome too and definitely a trip down to memory lane. This may not be as great as animal crossing but I think it's still worth it! :D
Incredible game. I played Back to Nature on PSone growing up NONSTOP. When the remake on GBA Friends of Mineral Town came out, I thought it couldn’t be stopped. Now with this game, I’ve fallen in love all over again. 50 hours in and no plans to stop anytime soon! This is an amazing remake.
I absolutely adored the remake, but I’m sad they removed rival heart events! It made the town feel so much more alive, like the NOCs had their own lives, and it was fun having some romantic competition for your chosen marriage candidate.
Friends of Mineral Town was so ahead of its time. The original game was so full of story and lore plus a bunch of random things you'd discover as you play. I'm glad it got a remake for Switch
This is really quite nostalgic for me. Harvest Moon BtN was one of my favorite PS1 games of all time. A bit sad they changed Ann to Ran, altho it seems personality-wise they're the same. OG Karen art looks cuter. Elly was the easiest bachelorette to impress, afaicr since gifting her was the cheapest, flowers.
Zack now looks like Nigel Thornberry and I love it. I will hear Nigel's voice in my head every time he speaks to me and that makes the game worth it already

I’m very excited to pick up this remake eventually! My first HM game was Magical Melody. I haven’t played many of the other HM games so I’m not sure how Magical Melody holds up in quality to other games in the franchise, but it holds a special place in my heart!
This games is a remake of Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral town which is a remake of Harvest Moon Back to Nature which is also a remake of Harvest Moon 64 which is my personal favorite. Holy Crap that’s a lot of remakes!
I recall as a kid, going after Karen. I had a lot of data on an 8x PS1 memory card, which was a single unit, but had a little interface you could use to switch which mem cards you were on. The literal night before the wedding day, the memory card got corrupted. I'm not ashamed to admit that tears were shed in that moment. I came back though, even though Karen had amnesia, I won her heart all over again. And Placid Farms became famous town-wide.
i didn't care about farming games in the past, but when i brought that game i saw it was really relaxing and fun. You dont have main stories, fights against enemies or puzzles to think of. the simple yet polished 3d graphics worked really great with the simplicity of the game itself. When i want to play something calm and simple, story of seasons friends of mineral town gives a feeling of living in a tranquil farm.
Yall, I'm waiting for the (Another) Wonderful life remake. Imagine: modern models, more realistic textures, soothing music, maybe some more marriage candidates and costumes, add the same sex marriage in.....That would be the DREAM.
Are they doing a remake of Another Wonderful life for the Switch? If so, I'll be super happy. I miss the A Wonderful Life version for the Gamecube and would love that style for the Switch.

I am in love with Another Wonderful Life! Forget-me-not-valley was definitely my fav village (and my first). So much nostalgia! It was a simple game but the storylines were so good.
I bought the game for my mom! She played almost all of the harvest moon games and we were really excited when we heard of a remake of Friends of mineral town (literally my whole family played the original title). She already invested HOURS on this game ^^ I was also really surprised to see that same sex marriage is now possible in this game. For a Japanese game, it seems like a HUGE step in the right direction 🥰🌈
Idk, Back to Nature seems already pretty much like this. It’s already 3D with chibi sprite and I kinda prefer the diagonal camera. It’s not like the Pokemon or FF remake that goes from blocky sprite to full HD, there’s already plenty of reiteration of Mineral Town so I think I’d pass this one.
my first harvest moon game was back to nature back on the PS1 and i'm playing this remake now, it's so good and nostalgic, I really liked some of the redesigns like the Doctor 💕 really enjoying it so far
I’m considering buying this now as someone who’s only played Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing in this kinda genre (I’m aware HM/SoS came first). I know it won’t be entirely the same and I’m fine with that, but I just wanna know how many hours I can pour in and the volume of things I can do. How long is the game usually until you’ve kinda done everything?
This game is NOT simple. Sure the core gameplay loop is, but figure out for yourself that the cursed fishing rod is on the 29 floor of the lake mine after you've fully upgraded all your tools, without a guide open. Or figure out that you need to give gifts to the Harvest Goddess until a new character appears, who will then sell you pets on the 15th of each season. Or that you can throw a cucumber into the lake to summon a kappa who you can then marry if you meet an absurd amount of requirements. Most of these things were in the original, but I would never call this series simple. Its virtually impossible to reach any kind of endgame without a guide open all the time
As I watched this I saw the heart near one of the girls (missed the name) and started to think "so it's boy x girl/ girl x boy like the others". Then I heard "same sex relationships" and I lit up like a Christmas tree. Going to have to save up to get this (no Stardew Vally but worth a look).
Ok so...wow Marvelous actually stepping into the same sex marriage, this gives me so much hope for futures Story of Seasons game, personally I hope Trio of Towns gets a Switch port, that was my favorite 3ds game. This will be my first time playing Friends of Mineral town as I only got into the farming life genre a few years ago, but so eager for tomorrow
This game franchise dates back to the SNES, don't ever say it rips off Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley. Animal Crossing is an amazing game as is Stardew Valley, but in reality playing just Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley and thinking "I don't need to play Harvest Moon (now Story of Seasons) because it's the same" you are wrong. This franchise feels nothing like the others. I grew up with Harvest Moon, I played this for hours in my GBA and I played A Wonderful Life for days on end in my room. I still remember how upset I was when A Wonderful Life ended, I had to stay in my room cause I didn't know how to explain that a video game made me cry.

You know what happened? Those people that said that are probably just people that jumped on hype trains. I remember animal crossing being hyped up during the quarantine... Real gamers know that Story of Season is the true Harvest Moon and that Harvest Moon/Story of Season is the OG of farming games.

Not saying harvest moon is just a farming simulator though cause It's more than that and I love this game even if I've been spoiled by animal crossing. This game is my childhood and would definitely come back to it. Animal crossing and harvest moon are their own unique genres.

64 was my first HM game. And yeah, Back To Nature recycled characters but improved on a lot of the ideas in 64.

The artstyle is very cutesy ofc, but for my personal taste, I wish they made the characters look more mature! I mean players that were fans of the original GBA version are adults now too~

I feel like the characters have gotten lazy. They lost their bulk like Gotts, Harris (he was much slimmer), Cliff, Duke Or Doug or both? and Zack is a bit different and rounded.
The original kinda shows more of the village like life where people work hard and have some muscles at least.
Maybe the character made everything too easy for them, that's why they're like that now Lol.
I am so glad I wasnt the only one that noticed this, and wanted it to be redone in a good art style not -well this lol. It's cute but it...it reminds me of those anime art from 2009 ..which are nice but it just doesn't fit this game, compared to the gorgeous graphics it feels oddly placed.

I totally get why the company felt the need to update the art style but I really do wish they'd go back to how it was on the older systems like ds. It was such a timeless look. I could return to harvest moon ds or ds cute in 10 years and it would still look good. Retro sure, but still incredibly bright and charming.
yes!! this is exactly how i feel, ive only ever played harvest moon tale of two towns but ive read a lot about the other games to learn about what the plot and characters and game play is like. Anyways i feel that ToTT has some of the best art of the harvest moon/SoS series that ive seen and i hope they move away from this overly polished chibi bobblehead style and move closer to the style of ToTT. I still love how beautiful the art is in that game every time i play

I personally cant stick with side scroller or 2d any more. And i cant understand why a company in 2021 would make a 2d game for a modern console. Thats not why people buy a switch. If you have a Gameboy or ds you can play all the side scroller or pixelated games you want. I personally would not have been able to play this game if they hadnt done this.

For those who aren't familiar with the game, it's actually one of the first farming/living simulation games when animal crossing or stardew valley didn't exist back then. Now which they made a much more modernized design with the character design and graphics, since this was originally called Harvest Moon: back to nature, it was actually one of the groundbreaking relaxing games back then psp and nintendo ds series.
Back to Nature was for the Playstation. This is a remake of the GBA game "Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town"
Unless you mean "originally" as in the first entry, but that was also not back to nature. The original game was on the SNES and was just called "Harvest Moon". Also, Animal Crossing did indeed exist before the original of this particular game came out in 2003 on the GBA. Back in 2001 it was released in English speaking countries, while back in 94 the original Animal Crossing released on the N64 c:
Additionally (and this is separate from my correction) if you want a current "Harvest Moon" game, make sure it's not labeled "Harvest Moon" if it came out after 2013, it should be "Story of Seasons" as the localizers in North America did an absolute dick move and kept the rights to the name "Harvest Moon" and made TERRIBLE knock offs of it.

Overall I really like the quality of the artwork, but I miss that old japanese-style cartoons look that the characters had.

I remember as a young girl being forced to play as a boy farmer if I wanted to marry the girls when I would much rather play as who I was IRL. Then feeling meh playing a girl farmer bc I didn't dislike the guys, but I really wanted to just marry the girls. Now that it's just standard in this game, it really means so much to me.

Many of the reviews have been comparing this game to Stardew Valley and then giving it a bad score. I've played the original 2003 version and it was nostalgic and enjoyable in its own way. Just because it lacks certain features and elements that were exclusive to Stardew Valley doesn't mean it's a poor game.
Well stardew valley was heavily inspired by harvest moon, so the creator upgraded and added QoL elements to it. Does not make harvest moon any less enjoyable tho. The history is deep with this game.
I think part of the problem is there are people who don't usually play harvest moon reaching for this one. And they're not used to the franchise quirks and weirdness. Stardew Valley was something of a love-letter to the original harvest moon games, but it didn't have some of the funky stuff which can makes the games a little less broadly appealing.
Aside from rival marriage, it is perfect replica of the first one with lots of improvement.
People who said it was a stardew clone or rip off probably an uncultured swine who never know where farming+dating simulation begin.

I’m still sad about the direction they went with when transitioning to 3d. The portraits became more and more childlike and I can’t get past it and the worse feeling controls of the 3d versions. But maybe that’s me
While it may not be the majority opinion, it's not "just you" despite what others may say.
Sometimes transitions to 3D are awkward and for some, it's harder to adjust to than for other players. Nothing wrong with that.

I totally get, what you mean. I saw some other games that were released by Natsume under the name "Harvest Moon" and I didn't like it at all. The character in "The Lost Valley" (?) just look so ... strange. That is the only way I can describe it. Moreover, it gave of a Minecraft-like atmosphere - at least in the in-game footage and gameplay I've seen. But those are the games released by Natsume. The actual, original "Harvest Moon" series by Marvelous is now released under the name "Story of Seasons" as most of you surely know. Those games look a lot better than those creepy designs Natsume has used in some of their games.
The remake (SoS: FoMT) looks really nice. Sure, there are some new character designs that I do not like, but they have improved some of the older ones as well.
I personally prefer the pixel art ones. This one looks too childish and stylised
So far, I'm absolutely loving this remake. One thing that makes me incredibly happy is that tools like the axe and sickle can be equipped independently of your bag, meaning they no longer take up precious inventory space. By far one of the biggest QoL improvements in this remake, and I genuinely hope the next SoS game keeps this feature.

I was worried this game would be a soulless port, and feel like a watered down mobile game. Instead, I've been blissfully soaking in the fact that I am playing a true Harvest Moon right now in 2020, and that Friends of Mineral Town got this love.
one of the things i find with the story of stardew moon factory genre (or farming sim genre) is that it breeds a very uncomfortable thought in my head that plagues a lot of gamers it goes "but I might need it later" because i don't always know how much of each material i'm gonna need to upgrade my stuff i find myself hoarding a big supply of random crap in my storage box (that milk that's been in my crate for 2 weeks must have surely gone off by now).

Well in the original FoMT games you didn’t have to hoard that much, at least early on, because building only requires money and lumber. On the other hand if this game is like the original you’ll want to avoid destroying small rocks because they make better fences than the real fences (they don’t rot).

Friends of Mineral Town was the very first HM game I've ever played on game boy and discovered my love for farming games. This is so nostalgic. I was just 14 then and now I'm married. I'm definitely getting this game to relive the feels.
The only complain i have for this game is the characters looks lifeless compared to the OG FoMT

Magical Melody was one of my first Harvest Moon games, so I’ve always loved the cutesy, chibi art style of it. I’m so glad they used the same style on this remake. I know it’s not for everyone, but I hope that doesn’t deter too many people from playing it. It would be awesome if this sells well and enables other older Harvest Moon games to be remade.

Ahhh, even if it's not much as other people say, I miss my Harvest Moon games. My first game was HM: Island of Happiness and I loved it. From there I played: Sunshine Islands, Grand Bazaar, Tale of Two Towns, DS Cute. I just loved farming and befriending everyone. Then I got introduced to the Rune Factory Series & I love love LOVE ALL of the Rune Factory.
I really am thankful for this game because it made my childhood fun even if I was lonely (we moved to a neighborhood without that much children in the community)

That similarly happened to me with Rune Factory 4. Bought the game on 3DS, then the port is announced. 😭 I still bought the port gosh dang it.
This game looks so cute! I'm so glad that it lets you walk on crops in this version. The worst part of FOMT was not being able to reach the tomato in the middle of your crop square until the last day of summer. My one hesitation is that the art style makes all the characters look so young

That's what the little elves were for. In the original I had 3 for watering and 3 for harvesting. I would rotate daily who would help, and that way I could keep them happy all the time. At max stats they were more than enough to help me with a full farm.
It be my first time playing friends of mineral town and I can't wait to play my copy of the game. 😁 and my first harvest moon game was a wonderful life on GameCube.

That's because story of seasons IS HARVEST MOON. Another company(Publisher) has the rights to the English name "Harvest moon" so they had to change the name to Story of Seasons to keep bringing the games to the US. The old publisher is now using the Harvest moon name to sell shitty games ran on the fame of the name alone.

I do wonder if Stardew Valley helped them decide to remake one fo the best games in the Harvest Moon franchise. I don't even know why people compare these two in the first place. I'd understand the comparison with Stardew Valley (since it was heavily inspired by SoS and introduced some modern, well-thought out changes), but Animal Crossing was never a real framing sim to begin with... Unless you count "hunting for villagers" and planting a couple of fruit trees a farming sim experience 🤷♀️

Ikr. I love animal crossing and I've been playing since 2002. I really don't see how Animal crossing and this game/franchise are similar. Maybe it's because both are chill games that can easily make you escape reality (if that makes senses lol).
Exactly, they're not similar games nor were they intended to be. It's irritating to see people put ACNH and Stardew Valley on the same level when AC has been around since 2001 and is a different type of game and Stardew was directly inspired by HM.

I'm not sure I fully agree with you "less complex features" statement. The mining in the older handheld titles was FAR superior and more complex than in some current Story of Seasons games where you don't actually have to descend a mine. You just hit things a few times a day. (Which is sad because I loved the mining from this version)
but you descend in this new game. i played it yesterday, and mining is at least as fun as the OG FoMT
The only thing that dissapoints me about this game is the price its too expensive

I love it when these games keep things simple like the camera angle. No need for massive 3d experiences when it doesn't need it.
The simplicity is what makes it so much fun and relaxing.
People forget that Stardew started as a mod of Harvest moon. He took Harvest moon and modded it so much it became a different game. Stardew is different but wouldn't exist without Harvest moon.
This game also seems like 5 steps back from the progress that Harvest moon/ Story of Seasons has progressed to... But it is a remake so I get it. I hope they remake Harvest moon: Another Wonderful life, the characters in that game... Oh man please remake that next.
It really feels quite ... "uneventful" now that I play the remake as an adult, but the game still has its value. For me, it is a way to de-stress from university and just enjoy the atmosphere.

I'm really curious, because I've only ever played two titles in the "Harvest Moon" named franchise (HM: FoMT and HM DS). Up till now, I have also not actually played other titles in the Story of Seasons series, I've only seen some artwort. Could you maybe recommend some to me?

I reccomend these games: Another wonderful life (available on PS4 store). Tale of towns: on the DS (I reccomend the 3DS version), A new beginning (really fun, everything is movable, you can craft things and place them where ever, ITS AWESOME). Story of seasons the 1st one is fun! Island of happiness is/sunshine islands are fun. Its very challenging and its got great romance lots of choices. If you don't romance someone they find another person to romance. Trio of towns is very fun, its like tale of 2 towns with not as good of a story but still fun.
I really love harvest moon/story of seasons and have almost all the games except for the wii and GameCube games.
Sorry this is so long but here is my top 5 games: 1. Another wonderful life(and the other version/limited editions of the game)( the story is great, interactions with villagers actually matter in this game, sad and happy things happe. And the music is popping. Gustave is the man. The NPCs have great personalities. 2. Tale of 2 towns(its pretty, it got great mechanics, fun story, the animals look great. The game is challenging. The crop and animal farming is very rewarding. 3. A new beginning ( its a lot of fun. You make the town. You shape and move everything.) Great clothes, & good Candidate for romance.
4. Island of happiness/sunshine islands. Its challenging but rewarding. The romance mechanics are really great and unique. You rebuild the island to make people move there. The characters are really fun but not talking to them will really ruin their friendship. Mining is really fun.
5. Trio of towns: tale of 2 towns on steroids but not as good of a story.

I think they will remake AWL too. I've been playing SoS FOMT for 2 days and Forget-Me-Not Valley is quite frequently mentioned when you befriend most of the townies. If anything that felt like an indication of AWL remake(?) or at least the devs just threw that in there for nostalgia.
@@andyrrgrstevie836 Ohhh you're right! I think I remember in the original, if you played FOMT on the same system you got new characters in AWL. Also in the original game AWL I think characters would journey to mineral town for the day.

My first game was Magical Melody but A Wonderful Life is so peaceful to me 🥺
AWL was interesting. It was a little more "mature" and more emotional. But it sadly lacked content. It had no real festivals, very few events, the days are too long and you don't have enough to do to fill those days, etc.
AWL isn't a bad Harvest Moon, but it's certainly not my favorite, and it ended up disappointing me a little.
man, a fresh remake of wonderful life would be perfect. w all the modern add ins of updated art/models, selecting if you want boy or girl farmer, and equal marriage like this remake and boom, literally the best harvest moon game in existence. wonderful life will always be my favourite.

As a longtime harvest moon/story of seasons fan, I really enjoy this game. My only few critiques are that time moves waaaay too fast in this game. I get time moves fast in games like these as they should but it’s too fast. I also don’t believe it is worth $50. I know it’s a remake of a game I loved as a kid so that is fine, but the game is too small and basic to be $50. It does have its charms and I love the updates.

@@ArisaPD didnt natsume only own the "Harvest moon" title and not the whole character designs and concept? They were just a publisher of the original FoMT's NA and EU version, they only own the english names as far as i know

Actually, this concept originated from the PS1 game called harvest moon: back to nature. The gba game friends of mineral town was already a remake. Imagine for more than 20 years, it is still being played by players like me that loved that farming simulation. Good game indeed!
Its Story of Seasons, of course its worth it xD I still enjoy the SNES Story of Seasons of game to this day (kinda weird refering the SNES Harvest Moon game as Story of Seasons lol).
Also idk how Animal Crossing is anything much like Story of Seasons. I'm fan of both series but c'mon, Animal Crossing is real time and way more slow paced.
I hate that Animal Crossing doesn't have a visual grid to show where you're working, much like this game, Minecraft, DQ Builders, etc...

I am SOOOO excited for this, friends of mineral town on gba has been my all time favorite game for the last 10 years and is the best harvest moon (aka story of seasons ) game of all time
you described this perfectly. I know Stardew has a LOT more features from various frachises, but theres something about this games simplistity that stops it being so overwhelming. I feel theres TOO MUCH to do in Stardew Valley thoug hi think its a great game in its own right. Yet at the same time FOMT does have some complex hidden stuff
I first started on the original Harvest Moon on SNES. It's amazing to see how the series has grown and inspired so many games like it. We don't talk about the games after A New Beginning though.
I kinda like how this game is more straight forward. You just focus on growing your farm without worrying about storyline objectives. I've played Story of Seaons Trio of Towns and beaten the game's "main story" more than once. It's one of my favorite games. But my problem is the game requires me to do or buy things that I'll never use just to progress the story. It just feels like a waste. Doesn't seem the case with this game.
I disagree. Ive been playing this game for a few days now and it's incredible boring compared to ToT. There are absolutely no objectives or story. The only thing you do is buy, sell, buy, sell without any incentives as to why you're doing it other than expanding your farm or buying more animals. I was so disappointed.
Harvest Moon was my favorite game growing up.. I’ve played Magical Melody, A Wonderful Life, and some of the Wii versions and I love each and every one. I think my favorite is Magical Melody because I played it the most. I tried getting into Stardew but I never enjoyed it as much (I’m a visual person and I don’t like the stardew graphics).
I love Magical Melody, it has so much to do and the cast of characters is the biggest yet :)
I used to play Harvest Moon MFoMT on my GBA SP. Almost everything is the same. Same tune, same stories and events and more! They added animals, characters and a few locations but it's still great. I thought I'd be disappointed because I kinda liked the 2D art style better, but this game is awesome too and definitely a trip down to memory lane. This may not be as great as animal crossing but I think it's still worth it! :D
Incredible game. I played Back to Nature on PSone growing up NONSTOP. When the remake on GBA Friends of Mineral Town came out, I thought it couldn’t be stopped. Now with this game, I’ve fallen in love all over again. 50 hours in and no plans to stop anytime soon! This is an amazing remake.

I absolutely adored the remake, but I’m sad they removed rival heart events! It made the town feel so much more alive, like the NOCs had their own lives, and it was fun having some romantic competition for your chosen marriage candidate.
Let's STOP comparing this to Stardew Valley. This is it's own thing and doesn't try to be anything else

Friends of Mineral Town was so ahead of its time. The original game was so full of story and lore plus a bunch of random things you'd discover as you play. I'm glad it got a remake for Switch

This is really quite nostalgic for me. Harvest Moon BtN was one of my favorite PS1 games of all time. A bit sad they changed Ann to Ran, altho it seems personality-wise they're the same. OG Karen art looks cuter. Elly was the easiest bachelorette to impress, afaicr since gifting her was the cheapest, flowers.
No farming sim games is better than Harvest Moon: Another Wonder-ful life.

I’m very excited to pick up this remake eventually! My first HM game was Magical Melody. I haven’t played many of the other HM games so I’m not sure how Magical Melody holds up in quality to other games in the franchise, but it holds a special place in my heart!
This games is a remake of Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral town which is a remake of Harvest Moon Back to Nature which is also a remake of Harvest Moon 64 which is my personal favorite. Holy Crap that’s a lot of remakes!
I recall as a kid, going after Karen. I had a lot of data on an 8x PS1 memory card, which was a single unit, but had a little interface you could use to switch which mem cards you were on. The literal night before the wedding day, the memory card got corrupted. I'm not ashamed to admit that tears were shed in that moment. I came back though, even though Karen had amnesia, I won her heart all over again. And Placid Farms became famous town-wide.
i didn't care about farming games in the past, but when i brought that game i saw it was really relaxing and fun. You dont have main stories, fights against enemies or puzzles to think of. the simple yet polished 3d graphics worked really great with the simplicity of the game itself. When i want to play something calm and simple, story of seasons friends of mineral town gives a feeling of living in a tranquil farm.
Yall, I'm waiting for the (Another) Wonderful life remake. Imagine: modern models, more realistic textures, soothing music, maybe some more marriage candidates and costumes, add the same sex marriage in.....That would be the DREAM.
Are they doing a remake of Another Wonderful life for the Switch? If so, I'll be super happy. I miss the A Wonderful Life version for the Gamecube and would love that style for the Switch.

I am in love with Another Wonderful Life! Forget-me-not-valley was definitely my fav village (and my first). So much nostalgia! It was a simple game but the storylines were so good.

I bought the game for my mom! She played almost all of the harvest moon games and we were really excited when we heard of a remake of Friends of mineral town (literally my whole family played the original title). She already invested HOURS on this game ^^
I was also really surprised to see that same sex marriage is now possible in this game. For a Japanese game, it seems like a HUGE step in the right direction 🥰🌈

Idk, Back to Nature seems already pretty much like this. It’s already 3D with chibi sprite and I kinda prefer the diagonal camera. It’s not like the Pokemon or FF remake that goes from blocky sprite to full HD, there’s already plenty of reiteration of Mineral Town so I think I’d pass this one.

my first harvest moon game was back to nature back on the PS1 and i'm playing this remake now, it's so good and nostalgic, I really liked some of the redesigns like the Doctor 💕 really enjoying it so far

I’m considering buying this now as someone who’s only played Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing in this kinda genre (I’m aware HM/SoS came first). I know it won’t be entirely the same and I’m fine with that, but I just wanna know how many hours I can pour in and the volume of things I can do. How long is the game usually until you’ve kinda done everything?
Should I buy this or Pioneers?
This game is NOT simple. Sure the core gameplay loop is, but figure out for yourself that the cursed fishing rod is on the 29 floor of the lake mine after you've fully upgraded all your tools, without a guide open.
Or figure out that you need to give gifts to the Harvest Goddess until a new character appears, who will then sell you pets on the 15th of each season.
Or that you can throw a cucumber into the lake to summon a kappa who you can then marry if you meet an absurd amount of requirements.
Most of these things were in the original, but I would never call this series simple. Its virtually impossible to reach any kind of endgame without a guide open all the time

As I watched this I saw the heart near one of the girls (missed the name) and started to think "so it's boy x girl/ girl x boy like the others". Then I heard "same sex relationships" and I lit up like a Christmas tree. Going to have to save up to get this (no Stardew Vally but worth a look).

This game franchise dates back to the SNES, don't ever say it rips off Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley. Animal Crossing is an amazing game as is Stardew Valley, but in reality playing just Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley and thinking "I don't need to play Harvest Moon (now Story of Seasons) because it's the same" you are wrong. This franchise feels nothing like the others. I grew up with Harvest Moon, I played this for hours in my GBA and I played A Wonderful Life for days on end in my room. I still remember how upset I was when A Wonderful Life ended, I had to stay in my room cause I didn't know how to explain that a video game made me cry.
