I got this amp a bit over a year ago and it's my favorite amp but not my "main" amp simply because of how loud it is. But man every once in a while I get it out, hook it up through a load box and my interface to tame the volume and I load up a speaker IR and think "wow this doesn't sound as good as I remember" (my cat has a habit of turning knobs on amps that she can reach so settings are never the same when I get it back out). So I pull up this video and re-learn how to dial it in and immediately remember why it's my favorite amp even if it isn't my main one hahaha. Thanks for the super easy to follow but detailed tone shaping lesson for this wonderful amp!
The Presence knob is the secret "boost" on most Marshalls that people often overlook. It feels like it brings out more gain, and "excitement" from the amp the higher it is. I would always recommend people (again, specific to Marshalls/clones) have the presence high, or maxed, and have the treble low or off, and work from there vs. the opposite of that. Presence high lets the amp breathe, low chokes it.
@@Poly6GrooveThe origin 20 is a fantastic "plexi" offering at a great price. The power scaling works great when you need a volume reduction but need to keep the plexi rock tone going. Volume roll off response and usable tone is impressive as well.
Thanks for the tone demo...One thing I think would add greatly to this tutorial is to roll the guitar volume knob down to 7/8 for lead and 3/4 for cleaner rhythm in your demo. This is the way it's done for recording and playing out live from my experience. Adding a fuzz face into the equation and turning it on and off for Rhythm and lead would emulate real life live stage use. I've been thinking of getting this amp after selling my Sovtek 100 watt amp because it weighed way too much and didn't have the tone I wanted...This Marshall amp seems to fit the bill pretty good...
I have one clean tone is amazing, with alittke help from some reverb! To get it, jump the channels, turn normal channels to about 10-11 o'clock, and have the high treble channel barely on. The tone stack is passive so more you turn to the right the more gain you will have unless you have them all on 10 you should be getting a clean tone if you've done the first step.
Your licks and riffs and feel makes many things Sound spectacular...would be nice If you could introduce some of it and your techniques so that " we" could testplay super cool gear with super cool tones👍
What are you doing to get that sound? Much of what is going on with the tones in this demo is not from the amp. My guess is it's a load box with IRs and reverbs and stuff added after the IRs. I ask because getting a tone like this using a load, DAW and IRs is not straight forward. I am fairly new to it and am still working out how to use IRs and whatever delay and reverb you have going on that is giving your tones all that extra juiciness etc. What's more, somebody with an amp and cab is not going to get these tones using the settings you suggest, due to all you have going on after the amp. I’ve found that plugging in to the normal high channel and jumpering to the high treble gives me more control over the trebles in this amp. I may be wrong, but I think that’s how Angus does it, too. Thoughts?
Sounds great, Paul! Hope you are well mate. I use the UAD Plexi plugin and found I really like telecaster tone going through top left input with volume around 7-8. I like to cut some of the mids and tweak bass, treble, and presence to taste. It's a beautiful sound, really starts compressing in a musical way and feels great to play. If you pick lightly you get a nice "clean" tone and likewise dig in for the dirt.
I own the 1987x and previously had the sv20h. I never really got the sounds I hear in the video: that 'juicy' midrange sound with the nice, soft top end. In my case it's rather a little bit harsh and tends to be fizzy. Are the speakers maybe that crucial? I play vintage 30. Or do you have any recommendations for me to get your glorious tone?
Hi Paul. Apart from the fact that the 20 watt amp hasn't got the low end of the old classics 50 and 100 plexi amps, is there any other difference in the quality of the tone? I really want to buy a good plexi amp (as all of my amps are modded versions of a Marshall) but wouldn't mind paying the extra £ and going for a 50 watt amp, if the new 20 watt amp doesn't really cut it tonally.
A marshall prefers to be adjusted to its liking much more than you adjusting it to yours. Make peace with the sound it wants to make and it will be glorious!
Hi Paul, Great Marshall Plexi tone with your guitars! I would like to ask, what pick ups are in your Strat? The comination sounds perfect with the amp.
@@TheStudioRats thanks for your reply. I received the amp yesterday and liked it the most when the guitar is directly connected and the fx loop is off. Will probably get a Fryette power station and use their fx loop
Fantastic video and playing! I just got the amp myself! Just have a question - what is the signal chain enabling you to add reverb? I used the efx loop, but since the overdrive from this amp comes a lot from the power section, time-based effects were undesirably 'overdriven' as well, Curious to know your personal way of getting the feed from the head and the signal chain for the reverb. Also, what cab were you using? Thank you!
When plugged in to the high treble #1 input my new marshall sv20H has a loud buzzing sound if I turn the high treble volume up at all, even at 1. Is this normal or does my amp need to go back? Thanks
sounds great =0 doesn't help the GAS for the amp , i realise that this is about dialing in the amp , but on single coil guitars, dialing back the tone pot on the guitar and even sometimes the volume a bit works absolute wonders in taming potential shrieking high frequencies
