Acrylic paint on canvas. Using monoprinting techniques.
Stretched canvas 20" x 16" primed with 4 coats of primer to achieve a highly smooth surface.
    Method :
Begin with the lightest colour (Cadmium Yellow). Use torn paper to protect the canvas from paint, at this stage you can draw out a rough composition or improvise as the work begins to evolve. I prefer to work in this way, although I always plan the colours that I will use and leave the composition to develop as I work.
Apply a thin layer of paint onto the plastic transfer sheet and then carefully begin to lay the paint onto the canvas. Use various degrees of pressure with your fingers or soft rag, use a blunt pencil or cotton bud to achieve lines. While the paint is still wet take a damp sponge and work over the paint (not too much) When you are satisfied with this first layer leave it to dry before moving on to the next colour. Repeat the process with each of the colours and remember to always mask off sections of the composition with paper, you don't want to fill the canvas with colour at this stage, allow each layer to be visible. This takes practice but can help to prevent an artwork becoming dull and lifeless. For the dark colour I have used a mixture of Prussian Blue and Burnt Umber, you need much more control for this layer so work with a thicker plastic and apply a little at a time, if you make a mistake just let the paint dry and go over this with one of the lighter colours.
When finished apply a couple of coats of acrylic matt varnish.
    Materials :
Stretched canvas 20" x 16" primed with 4 coats of acrylic gesso.
    Acrylic Paint :
Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic paint range
Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Permanent Magenta, Cadmium Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Prussian Blue, Burnt Umber, Pale Olive, Titanium White.
Rags, sponge, cotton buds, bamboo skewers.
The monoprinting technique works best on a smooth surface so the canvas panel has had at least 4 coats of gesso. There are many videos on UA-cam that demonstrate this surface treatment and depending on the type of primer used it can be brushed on or spread with a pallet knife to achieve the desired surface, use a damp sponge to remove the weave of the canvas and allow each coat to dry. You are looking to achieve a working surface that is similar to a smooth cartridge paper.
Details and material list to follow.

Wow...totally new techniques! It's very impressive how from a plain canvas and paper cuttings you brought canvas to life with an amazing mind-blowing abstract creation.
Thank you for sharing this amazing tutorial ❤. Will definitely try this technique.

Dan, I'm an artist myself and I like your work. I intend to cherry pick some of your moves. But I personally enjoy good or bad remarks, in case I learn something.
Not that I do learn very much, because I know everything already. Only joking.
But remember the old saying "If you can't stand the heat etc.)
But seriously I do like your work. I will try it and I intend to use gold leaf to give it that extra something. Kind regards and keep up the good work

Crazy!! At almost every application of color, I'd think, ok dont add anymore or you'll ruin it. Then you'd add more...and more... Simply stunning piece, my eyes can't find a resting place, there's too much to see, and yet it feels peaceful. In love!

First I saw a yellow marsh grasses with red flowers vignette… then I was on my back looking up at the sky through fall leaves on treetops…. then it turned into an abstract of a cat on a windowsill looking out at a colorful garden. I could get really lost in this painting and see something different every time I looked at it! I’m definitely going to try some of this technique!!!
PS I still see the cat in the bottom right. 🙃

But, I enjoyed just watching you create this painting.

    Dear Dan,
Your video is very soothing and meditative. I am always intrigued by your intuitive process of painting/printing. The music complemented your creating this canvas. At times, I was reminded of Klee, then Chagall. Really enjoyed the stills capturing the different stages of your painting.
This is a great technique for people with any physical challenges. I broke my wrist on 1-21-20 and really miss drawing and writing. For people with arthritis or seniors, this would be a great art therapy technique. I may just have to try this!
    Have a wonderful week!
May you have good health, prosperity, and Joy!
    Best wishes,
    Dianna (Maryland, US)

Hi there Dan I’m a newbie to painting and mixed media, and I love how different this looks, I’m always wanting to learn to create unusual backgrounds with different techniques, going to give this a try, Thanks for the inspiration 💕

Do you ever work in watercolor? I’d appreciate & benefit from anything on watercolor you would post. I could use your help. I will bring new freedom to my art thanks to you. I believe I’m going to love not only the process but the result. You are a gem, Dan. Be well. 4/5/23

I don't work with watercolour paint usually but I want to film a new series of videos that would explore this. I need to practice first!

Mesmerizing to watch. Thanks so much Dan; I’ve learned quite a bit. I intend to apply this to my acrylic work, and have already applied it to my digital work (Procreate).

I'm late to the party on this one and most of the superlatives have been tossed out there already -- but I will say this is an excellent and inspiring demonstration. Your creativity and process really shines and you inspire others. Thank you so very much.
