  • "I am amazed every time that the clay can do this.”
Paul Briggs is one of three featured artists at the 37th Annual Penland Benefit Auction, a celebration of contemporary craft.
Paul’s unique pinching process is neither additive nor subtractive but expansive, growing the form from one chunk of clay.
At Penland, he has shared his innovative techniques in the clay studio.
We are honored to present this original short film created for the occasion by Darren Cole.

It is all about the marks that leave your hands in the clay. Many potters(especially the ones throwing on the wheel) try hard to remove all these marks, which in MOST cases(there are always exceptions from a rule) I do not understand. What are they afraid of?...Pinching is about leaving marks to what you`ve touched

Hi Paul. Your ceramics are fabulous. As I fellow muddy, I enjoy hand building as well. Greetings from down under New Zealand.
