You make an important point. Thank you. When I thought of this myself I thought your only approach would be to inspect the frame - but those are not waterproof. Disconcerting to me was to find water on top of the battery when I pulled the TQ battery out of the Trek…! Glad it was removable.

On the bright side, after contacting a rep at Canyon, you can still ride your ebike after removing the battery without causing damage to the motor or drivetrain. Lastly, this will not void the warranty should any damage occur to the frame.

@@roadlesstraveledtruckee waterproofing a battery is almost mission impossible. talking from experience. Water gets in through the tiniest crack, but will never find its way out ever again. Evporating and condensating all the time corroding the cells...
some have potted the cell blocks, but that essentially makes the battery irrepairable and a pain to disassemble.
Personally I'be gone for stainless steel soldered shut with tin solder, letting the cables out through tight silicone grommets.

@ I see where Rad Power bikes is now encapsulating their batteries with resin. Others do this as well, I think I remember seeing a tear down of a Tesla by Munro where the battery was treated the same way. But as you point out, can’t repair it, and recycling is complicated.

a safe battery is made of high quality cells and has a smart bms that allows the user to access cell level information about the battery. Manufacturers tend to go for the highest energy density cell to have a sales point, but they overlook that these high capacity cells cannot sustainably handle higher discharge rates. they would be the right choice for larger batteries but not for a complete discharge in 40 minutes

Agree and a positive outcome of this. Anyone issue is I’m learning a lot more about batteries for these bad boys. Hardest thing is to know how well the manufacturer built the battery. I guess we need to figure out which manufacturer to trust and or see them put to a standardized rigorous test.

@roadlesstraveledtruckee I'm currently repairing a bunch of rickshaw batteries (1800-2400Wh) and they all have some issues which most likely arise from bad BMS. if a cell is bad or drifted away from the others it's always at the negative pole of the pack. on the older ones there were many poor spot welds, cells got detached from the parallel connection leading to major balancing issues. Latest generation smart BMS are super compact and totally awesome. that's what Ivm equipping these batteries now, after a long session of manual cell balancing

Sounds like a tough Job. Good you have these new BMS’s available. Thanks for sharing your experience, hard for most people to imagine all that goes into the battery system and the difficulty in making it all safe.

Another great video 👍 My YT battery does seem to be very durable, especially with the fact that it creates part of the frame construction. My previous Cube Hybrid TM 160 Bosch 625 battery was also built to last, being made from an aluminium casing, despite it being within the complete frame and a separate plastic cover for access to it.
Seems that Canyon may have concentrated more on weight saving with their battery casings and unknowingly neglected the safety aspect or certainly overlooked that issue that has come about in recent weeks??

Thanks. Yes, not sure what Canyon is thinking now but it’s clear any trade-offs they made were not good ones.

Watching this video made me think that bikes with difficult to remove batteries (which seem to be more common) are going to make keeping on top of these things harder. If the bike is made so the owner is never meant to take the battery out, how will the owner discover problems to raise with the maker of the bike?
