This is probably the heaviest straight drama scene that StarKid’s ever done.
That Becky monologue? OMG. Kim went to Juilliard and it shows in this scene.
    So powerful.
But I agree that while both voices individually are beautiful, they don’t seem to quite mesh together for some reason.

At first Santa Claus Goes to High School seems like a bit of a throwaway gag but upon rewatches I really like how they have a movie that portrays an idealized, sunshine and rainbows version of the high school experience transition to a scene of two people looking back to and romanticizing their own high school days in a bittersweet way. How easy it is to laugh off something like High School Musical because it is idealized and unrealistic in such an obviously goofy way vs. how legitimately devastating it can be to be in a depressed headspace where you look back to your teen years and only see the hope and potential you had back then and feel like you've lost that forever. It's like two different sides of the same coin.
Also Kim's "I'll never let you go" drives me wild in the best way.

I think the vocal anomalies you're picking up is because pretty much all the cast were sick. Their voices sound amazing considering how bad the sickness/virus was, but some notes were much harder to sing.

They also clip the UA-cam videos together from several different shows so there is gonna be subtle differences if they cut together various parts of the performance.

I would love if you did a video after you watch the whole thing where you compare this performance with the cast recording. They were definitely less focused on being in character and more focused on the vocal quality on the recording, and were not struggling with illness like most of the cast was here. Can't wait to see you react to the rest of the show, there are a lot of bangers left!

I love how you break this all down. Just know, if you haven't been told yet, most of the cast was sick during the filming of this show, so there are some vocal things that may not be normal for them. Considering that they were not at their physically best health-wise, they still sound amazing. Team StarKid always strives to give you their best, even when they are feeling their worst. Anyway, just a thought (and a reason I hope you do much more StarKid in the future).

Some fun facts about this song! There’s a version of the performance with commentary where Jeff mentioned that he struggled writing a song between a true soprano and a baritone vs. Between an alto and a baritone (I’m assuming he meant songs for Lex and Ethan?) so that’s maybe where some of the weirdness came from? Kim also mentioned that Dylan sang the song a whole step up because she had trouble singing it any lower than that 😮

WAIT! I must find this video!!! I mean, ultimately, the song and moment is pulled off for an audience! I’m just trained to hear moments that need growth and polishing. I can not wait to delve deeper into this song.

It is paid content but I highly recommend it if you want to learn more about the stage direction, songs and their composition, editing, BTS moments, or even more about how the lore fits together! The crew comments over the entire show and includes Nick Lang (writer of all the Starkid shows along with his brother), Paul Gabriel (Stage Manager), and Jeff Blim (composer) as well as a bunch of the cast: Angela Giarratana (plays Lex), Lauren Lopez (plays Linda), Jon Matteson (plays the lawyer character and voices Wiggly), Curt Mega (The president), Kim Whalen (Becky), Joey Richter (Uncle Wiley), and James Tolbert (plays multiple characters + choreographed the show)

I wonder how much of Dylan's "overpowering" bit at @20:14 was due to mixing via the sound system - like his mic was turned up too loud or something. I feel like they blended better on the album version (but that's just what I recall from the last time I listened to it)

I know that you're primarily looking at vocals in your review, but I feel like Starkid as a whole is really good at jumping throughout their range, not just in the music! This snippet had me crying for their backgrounds and then crying because I snort laughed so hard at Santa and Noelle on my first viewing. Incredible how they can do all that in a short scene.

honestly i can't even blame you for being so into the scene you forget to add commentary, because i 100% would be too :D
anyway it's really interesting watching these videos because i know honestly next to nothing about music and singing and you're just pointing out things i'd never in a thousand years notice at all. Some, honestly, I can't hear even when you point them out, but I guess it's kind of the same as I can't really hear the difference between for example the Russian ш and щ, or sometimes even the English /s/ and /z/ sounds if I'm not listening for the difference, like it's just one of those things my ears and brain were never trained to pick up on because it was never important if i could. But, either way, I kinda love seeing experts pick stuff apart, even when it's something I don't understand much at all
i have to admit, sometimes i wonder if i could've learned to act like they do on the video, pull emotion out of people like that, if i'd stuck to it (i did a little bit of theatre stuff in high school, helped write and played a side role in this Peter Pan -but-in-modern-setting-with-street-gangs play we did in my second year, but that was it), but eh, probably not, and in any case that train has long since gone for me now

But it's become one of my favorites from the entire soundtrack. You should check out Starship, there's a song called "The Way I Do" and Dylan is also in this show.
It's not a duet, there are total four characters singing this song as a whole but each verse started out as a duet (does that make sense?)
So Dylan is singing a duet with Meredith Stepien who I believe you don't know her, yet.
I personally think Dylan's voice blends well with her voice you should check it out after you're done with Hatchetfield triology
Also you get to hear Joey Richter's vocal improvents since it's a pretty old show.
