  • Board repair today, and the most text-book example of an Apple Board Repair job I've seen in a long time. Spoilers down below...
    Short-circuit on PPBUS_G3H, used voltage injection to discover a shorted cap on input to DDR3-core supply. Replaced cap.

    Congrats on the new shop Graham. I do hope we get a Captain Cook at some stage. I was stunned at how small your previous one was because the opening shot of the video made it look a way site bigger than it actually was. I assume that was due to camera lens distortion. I wish you all the best and that everything turns up roses. 👍

    Tantalum capacitors are prone to short circuit faults caused by age and driving them with too much ripple too close to their voltage spec. I would suggest fitting new ones every time. The heat of fitting the 2nd hand replacement just pushes it closer to the end of it's life as well.
    Nice repair though......

    • @MattP79
      @MattP79 3 роки тому +1

      Typical Apple though. Non-standard size, capacity and voltage. Can easily get 68uF 16v poly-tantalum from RS - but of course they're a larger package size and won't fit. New ones can only be purchased from less-trustworthy suppliers on AliExpress and eBay.

      not if you're running a shop and trying to make money........time is money.......no one can spend 2 hours on a board that a customer is only paying for 1 hour worth of work.

      @@Pulsebass Often, no. If the chip has a datasheet it may provide guidance on the values to use. That's why "donor boards" became popular. No need to worry about the value - just replace with the identical part.

    That's a nice troubleshooting step by step procedure you conducted out loud there. It's very clear and helpful. I would have used the spray method to find overheating component in the absence of IR cam though. Denature alcohol dry fast and clean but dries super fast in the slight presence of heat.

    I am working on a a1466 where the macbook air will turn on once I unplug and re-plug the battery cable on the logic board. The charger works correctly going from orange to green. When I had the macbook air powered up, I could restart it several times without a problem. However, if I shut it down then it would not turn back on. It definitely had a minor spill (chocolate milk) that has been thoroughly cleaned out and the logic board looks prefect. The main power board (where the charger plugs into) had some rainbowing on sveral terminals which I scraped to clean it up a bit. I am almost done putting it back together and was hoping for any advice or guidance? Do you know what could be wrong? Cheers.

    A high reading on a capacitor read from a DMM can also mean leakage. Remember DMM's measure capacitance using charge timing. You can increase charge timing by adding leakage.

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 роки тому

      Yea fair point. In this case we were like, 1 or 2uF out, I'm sure it's fine. But that deffo sounds like something to look out for. I'll have to do some comparisons with my component tester to see if there's an easy way to test for this without an expensive LCR meter.

    I have a similar type of problem with a Acer e1572 which started up before, even with a blinking Amber LED lite and after replacement of Memory RAM and new ac charger.
    I couldn't reset to factory settings from the main screen. So I decided to disassemble it to reset the CMOS battery. Unfortunately this model doesn't have a CMOS battery.
    After reassembling it, it will not start up. Thinking it was the Battery Pack, I bought a new one.
    The LED is blue indicating fully charged, no fan sound nothing.
    Still it will not turn on?
    HELP!

    You are not wrong that if a capacitor is measuring a tad over, it's no big deal. I believe it is important to stress the point, that it's ok if it's over as long as it is inside of the given tolerance. This is important because a leaking capacitor will show "over" capacity, which is to say, it's going to fail soon. Best to replace with a new one IMO. Take this for what it is worth, or with a grain of salt.

    my macbook pro 13" late 2013 took a big gulp of hot tea and shut itself off instantly, i opened it up and dried off the logic board as much as possible, but it took a week to get a screwdriver set to get the logic board out and flipped around. i opened it last night to see two small spots of corrosion, cleaned them up with 99% alcohol and still nothing works. power supply shows a light to indicate the batteries still take power. i thought maybe the keyboard was dead or the ribbon cable got damaged, so i tried jumping it with the direct power supply/disconnected battery, as well as with the power pins on the board, nothing works. the guy near me wants me to pay nearly the same amount as a brand new macbook pro to look at it and MAYBE fix it, PLUS whatever parts it needs. this made me realize there's a lot more to working with logic boards than just the base parts, could be literally anything or everything that needs fixing.

The LCD Screen does not light up but there is an angle where I can seem to see the log in password window but very faint.. but plugging to an external display and there is no issue it will work. . Would it be a lcd replacement? if it is do you suggest buying the whole replacement assembly or just the screen?

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 роки тому

      That's a backlight fault. At 4:00 I show basic checks on the backlight. See if the output diode is shorted to ground (_should not_ beep in continuity mode) and then check that the fuse hasn't blown ( _should_ beep in continuity mode). Also do an SMC reset and a PRAM reset, because sometimes it's a software issue and you get lucky.
      If the backlight is shorted, it's likely a damaged display connector, or the display itself needs to be replaced, or both.
      If there's no short, but the fuse has blown, just a replacement fuse should fix it.
