      I think it’s not so much that it fits better, I actually think it takes away something that the dub does better. I can’t find any faults with the dub and the subs va’s never quite seemed right for some situations.

      You're missing all the subtlety from the subs when you listen to the dubs. The voices "fit" as much as a circle fits in a square hole. It fits but you won't get the edges or fill the entire hole.

    Out of all the reaction channels, this is the first one where I see the comment section supporting the dub. I will be the odd one out and say the dub is OK but the original voices are PERFECT. You really hit the nail when you said Frieren was sassy, which she is not in the original voice.

      @@kroanosm617 I would go as far as to say that the Frieren in English feels kind of like a different character, as it has some nuances in her voice that are very different than in Japanese, and you could say that since the dub is good, you kind of get two series in one, worth watching both versions in the end.

      In the sub Frieten is super old but sounds and acts childish because she is fairly young by elf standards. The dub portrays her more like she's older, wiser, and full of sass. It's not bad, but it loses all of the nuisance of the characterr. Frieren has been around so long but her development as a person stagnats because she spends so much of her life isolated, until Himmels death forces her to reexamine her life and start to mature as a person

  • @g.r.linden7713
    @g.r.linden7713 15 днів тому +183

    I don't usually chime in on the sub vs dub debate but in this case, I think it changes the show a bit. As you pointed out the English V.A. is a bit sassy whereas the Japanese V.A. is more deadpan. With the deadpan delivery you get the sense that Frieren is on the spectrum, or at least has enough trouble with social cues and norms to set her apart from those around her. For me that fits more into the theme of the show than a Frieren who understands and is comfortable with sass, sarcasm, and banter. But that's just my opinion, this is a show I'm sure you'll rewatch on your own time at some point so you could watch the sub then and decide if it affects the story or not for yourselves.

    Beyond the tone differences between the languages, when you watch the Subbed version first you realize how strange and wordy the English script translations are.
    When Heiter pats Frieren's head before the last adventure -
    Original Japanese: "Atama nadenna" (Casual way of saying 'Don't pat my head')
    Subbed Frieren: "Don't pat my head."
    Dubbed Frieren: "Thus, my head's still not for patting."

    Frieren is a beautiful show - in the art, the characters, the story. Love that you picked this up to watch.
    On sub v dub - Frieren (and Himmel to an extent) feels like different characters in both versions and I personally prefer the sub. It was what I imagined her to sound like and be as a character while reading the manga.
    The translation isn’t bad, the voice actors are also great for the dub but I feel like her voice in Japanese fits the tone of the show far better.
    Although, you guys go for what you prefer for yourselves and for this channel as reactors. You can watch episode 1 in sub in your own time and see which you would pref to continue with. Either way they’re both great versions.

    I'm surprised you guys are discovering this series only now, since it's right up your alley. It's been out for over a year. It came out just a few weeks prior to Delicious in Dungeon, and their screentime overlapped for quite a long time, so it was one of my absolute winter pleasure to watch an episode of Delicious for the quirkiness back to back with Frieren for the feels and the artistry.
    2024 winter was such a blessing for fantasy anime lovers.
    Dub is nice, but sub makes the show truly legendary, as the voices truly match each and any characters.
    If you don't believe me, try rewatching this episode in sub. And make your own idea what fits you best.

    Having watched both dub and sub, they're both a distinct experience, because the voice direction and the translation choices make Frieren's personality slightly different between the dub and sub. Lots of people already talked about what they love about the subs, but I think the dubs give a different quality that worth watching with an open mind that it is going to be a slightly different vibe. It's localized rather than translated, which a lot of purists hate, but I find fascinating.
    I vote continuing with dub because there's so few dub reactions out there, and I'd lot to see more variety. Might even watch it twice, because it's one of those shows that you notice a lot more things the 2nd time around because of what you know by the end of the show. Lots of subtle details that at face value isn't very significant the first time you watch it until you have a better understanding of what it means.
    Also another benefit of the dub is you know how a bunch of names are pronounced (unless you speak German, in which case there's 1 character name that's a very mild spoiler if you know German, but otherwise the name are all German words and are aptly picked). Reactors who watch the subs generally mispronounce a lot of the names in the show.

    The first 4 episodes were originally aired as a single 2hr movie. As a result, some people find the start of the show to be too slow and take too long to get to the long term plot. I don't expect that to be the case for you two, but just getting out in front of the complaints if I'm wrong. Try to get to at least the end of episode 4 and then there's a slight shift
    As for Sub vs. Dub, I'm sure you'll get comments in favour of both. I originally watched the dub and enjoyed it. I think both are good and either will work for the reaction. If anything, I think the vast majority of reactors react to the sub, so potentially just for the sake of having a niche for the YT business side then the dub might be better. But ultimately just do whichever you'd prefer

    I haven’t seen a single reactor (out of dozens) use the dubbed version of Frieren yet, so I don’t know if that translates to you potentially getting more traffic from using the uncommon dub or less traffic because the dub is wildly unpopular and I just don’t know it.
    But I’m not a subtitle-only purist; if it’s a show that I really enjoy then I’m usually watching at least once for both sub AND dub. While the sub will have the benefit of the original voice direction the dub can sometimes have more accurate/appropriate translations since subtitles sometimes need to be paraphrased for screen time, so I get the most context out of watching both. Unless a show’s dub is pretty awful, but really dub quality has only improved over the years.
    IMO as dubs go this one’s pretty good, plus I imagine the overwhelming majority of your audience for this reaction series would have already seen the subtitled show anyway, if not both versions already. - I’d say react to the one you want since I’m here for YOUR take on the show and I’ve already seen both sub/dub multiple times.

    I watched the dub, and you are the first reaction I have seen to the dub, but I have watched many sub reactions. I have to split my attention between the reactors and the subtitles, which I didn't have to do here. So thanks.

    The dub here is pretty good. But personally, i love the sub. The Japanese voice cast did a truly incredible job. Follow your hearts/best watching experience for yourselves, but I'd recommend trying an episode subbed to see the comparison.

    Dub is okay for rewatching. But personally, if it's your first, I'd suggest, highly suggest to go for Sub as it captures the core of Frieren. You want that emotion to tickle your soul. ❤

    Not sure but Japanese are obsessed with German words in their fantasy anime. The sword hero is called "Himmel" (heaven), the Priest "Heiter" (being jolly), the dwarf "Eisen" (iron) and she is caller "Frieren" (to freeze), kinda interesting

    I haven't seen the dub so I don't have any real opinion yet, but old Himmel completely took me out of it this episode lol. They couldn't get an actual senior to do the voice? It's the same 20-something year old dude doing his best old person impression. It does not sound good lol, very immersion breaking. Frieren's VA is great though

    • @alcor4670

      Those are genuinely odd -- but interesting -- observations regarding your take on English Himmel and Frieren. Nobuhiko Okamoto (JP Himmel VA) also voiced Elder Himmel but it felt that _his_ performance playing an older guy seemed less convincing than that of the EN VA.
      Regarding EN Frieren's VA... idk man, she makes Frieren sound more... well-adjusted? More empathetic? Relates better to others than JP Frieren? Basically, EN Frieren sounds a lot less aloof than JP Frieren. Still an above average performance for an EN dub, but very different from Atsumi Tanezaki's.

    • @Ryuu44
      @Ryuu44 15 днів тому +4

      @@alcor4670JP VAs just have more range. The same person can believably voice a child, a young adult, and someone older. The same VA can voice a "wimp" and a "Chad".

    • @alcor4670
      @alcor4670 15 днів тому

      @@Ryuu44 Generally, yes. But I found it odd that Nobuhiko Okamoto -- the same guy who voiced Bakugo -- gave Elder Himmel a thinner veneer of old-man voice compared to the EN VA's.
      In any case, I think Himmel's EN VA did well whilst Frieren's EN VA gave her too much emotion. I'd _still_ prefer the sub over the dub, but that's a personal preference.

    • @Ryuu44
      @Ryuu44 15 днів тому

      @@alcor4670 it's of course preference but to me EN old Himmel sounds kinda hurt, his voice is trembling a bit. JP Himmel at all ages sound serene. For me it's like what I'd expect from an enlightened being, like if I talked to a Buddha... Or someone who just smoked a joint and is very relaxed, in harmony with the universe and shit like that.

    The dub is generally fine, but frieren herself just doesn't feel the same.
    Her voice actor just sounds too intentionally badass, when the og is just idk nonchalant.
    It doesn't sound like much, but in this show every little detail has a huge impact.

  • @nicoalbert1450

    I personally think the sub is more fitting, but i like both. Frieren in the sub feels more emotionless or not knowing how the right emotional reaction would be a bit playful and the english dub she seems more sarcastic.
    Here a little fact for your start into the Series. Every name in the series is a german word and is kind of a explanation about the characters, like:
    Frieren - feeling cold, a play on her cold emotionless reactions
    Himmel - Heaven, because a hero is supposed to be in Heaven
    Eisen - Iron
    Heiter - beeing in a good mood, the word is also used in Germany if somebody is slightly drunk

    Eh I prefer the sub but I'm not opposed to a dub journey, the English actors seem pretty amazing too, it's a different take on Frieren herself though. If you really enjoy Frieren's performance, then dub is probably your best bet since the sub is completely different. Although there is a reason the original is directed differently too so you know... Depends what you value most. I'll follow either way, and honestly I'm curious to hear more dub if you choose that, I've heard a bit of it out of curiosity, but I didn't go very far after checking it out.

  • @luzviminda795

    Yes, the story is about what happens after the heroes' journey ends, following their victory over the Demon King. It explores life beyond the adventure, what lies ahead after the epic quest is complete. Hence the title, Beyond Journey's End.
    Frieren is the only anime in a long time that has gotten me excited each week, eagerly waiting for the next episode. Before this, I had been pretty much burned out on anime for many years because I had watched so many of them - probably over 1,000 (I've been watching anime continuously for almost 20 years). This burnout was especially due to most anime following the same repetitive tropes.
    Even now, with popular anime like My Hero Academia, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, Solo Leveling, and Demon Slayer, etc. which many people get hyped about, I can't bring myself to finish them because of how many generic tropes they include. It makes sense, though; why change the formula if it still works and makes money? But for me, I usually can't even get past two or three episodes before I get bored and stop watching.
    That’s why I’m so happy that Frieren somehow reignited my joy for watching anime.

    I'm so glad you guys are watching this show. I love it so much! The characters, the music!!! The best way I can describe this show is to imagine if LOTR was about Legolas reconnecting with humanity after learning the rest of the Fellowship has died. Something you should know is that all the names are real German words that give insight into the characters. Frieren means freezing; Himmel means sky or heaven; Heiter means joy; Eisen means iron; Fern means distance.

    This and Delicious in Dungeon were easily the best 2 anime of 2024.

    Sub or Dub is a choice you pick as we all have our own personal taste.
    Sometimes I pick Dub cause some VA like Chris Sabat as All-Might or Ian Sinclair as the Narrator in Kaguya-sama make the dub so awesome... you gotta see the dub and their version.
